Abstract:Floss silk was treated by adopting different lye concentrations of 0.5%,1% and 2%.The changes of relative breaking extension ratio had significant differences and the average relative breaking extension ratio disposed with 1%concentration was 19.66%.The changes of tenacity per size had no significant differences when dealt with different concentrate of lye.The average tenacities per size were 1.95 cN/dtex,2.12 cN/dtex and 1.98cN/dtex.The average relative breaking extension ratios were 15.11% and 22.7% before and after drawn disposals.The relative breaking extension ratios were extremely signif icant difference.The average tenacities per size were 1.95 cN/dtex and 2.66 cN/dtex before and after drawn disposals.According to FT-IR,the change information of β-sheet in floss silk structure with physiochemical disposals is mostly amide I,amide II and amide III.
Influence of pre-tensioning high-performance yarns on the bending stiffness of textile composites

Abstract:Journal of Industrial Textiles, Volume 54, Issue , January-December 2024. This study explores the stiffness enhancement in textile composites using four different fiber types: carbon, Kevlar, Vectran, and high-tenacity polyester (HTP). Pretension levels of 0.2, 2, 5, and 10 N were applied. A setup was developed to measure fiber stiffness. Results indicate that carbon fiber consistently demonstrates the highest stiffness across all pretenstionlevels, attributable to its high tensile strength and modulus. Kevlar fiber, although initially less stiff than carbon, exhibits the most substantial increase in stiffness, particularly between 5 and 10 N of pretension, reaching a peak stiffness of 33.8 at 10 N. Vectran fiber shows a gradual increase in stiffness, surpassing HTP but slightly lagging behind carbon and Kevlar. The rates of yarn-specific bending stiffness increase were measured as 0.168 for HTP, 0.054 for carbon fiber, 0.173 for Kevlar fiber, and 0.191 for Vectran fiber. The study highlights the importance of understanding how yarn pretension affects the bending stiffness of yarn-polymer composites, which is crucial for advancements in textile engineering. It was found that variations in the bending stiffness of HTP and carbon fibers significantly impacted the composite bending stiffness more than Vectran and Kevlar fibers under pretension during composite formation. High-stiffness yarns were less influenced by increasing pretension during composite fabrication. The study suggests utilizing yarn pretension to control the stiffness of textile/polymer composites and proposes individually tensioning and pultruding fibers or yarns in the polymer matrix before composite formation. A specialized setup for achieving this during the protrusion process is recommended.

Abstract:Preparation of woven fabric using cotton‐polyester composite yarn and evaluation of physico‐mechanical and comfort. Cotton is the most widely used natural cellulosic polymer and polyester is a synthetic polymer. The use of polyester fiber is increasing gradually day by day due to its strength and longevity, while the use of cotton fiber is decreasing due to its unavailability. At present, the use of cotton‐polyester composites is ubiquitous. This research work aims to assess the physical, mechanical and comfort properties of the woven fabric using cotton‐polyester composite yarns in a weft direction and coarser yarn count because of the use of these fabrics in the future for the denim manufacturing process. Four different samples were fabricated by using 100% cotton (10 Ne) yarn in the warp direction and 100% cotton, cotton‐polyester composite, and 100% polyester yarn in the weft direction of the fabric. Similar fabric and machine parameters were maintained for manufacturing all the samples. The samples were then tested for areal density, tensile strength, thickness, abrasion resistance and pilling, drape, flexural rigidity, and air permeability to find the optimum capability of the fabric. Physico‐mechanical properties with the proportion of increasing polyester components in fabrics improves areal density (184 to 199 g/m2), strength (almost 19 times in weft direction), drape (0.655% to 0.789%), and flexural rigidity (almost double). On the other hand, increasing comfortability properties with the proportion of cotton components in fabrics improve air permeability (139.85 to 159.58 cc/s/cm2), abrasion (only 3.036% mass loss), and pilling resistance (grading 4 after 2000 cycles). Highlights Composite yarns made of cotton and polyester provide a method of improving fabric properties for better performance. Higher proportions of cotton make clothes more breathable and less likely to pill and wear out. Polyester parts make fabrics stronger, more durable, and less likely to wear out. Cotton‐polyester composites are ideal and have potential for various textile applications. Blending natural and synthetic fibers composite allows for customized fabrics that meet specific performance needs without compromising comfort.

Abstract:<p>The friction states between yarns affect the stress transferred in fabric and the fabric structure significantly affects the tribological properties of composites. In this aricle, the effects of fabric structure on yarn pull‐out property and tribological performance of composite were thoroughly studied. Four different fabrics with same tissue cycles number and thread count (2/2 double twills, 1/3 twill, 4‐shaft satin, and 4‐shaft reinforced satin) were used to evaluate the yarn pull‐out property in fabric and the tribological performance of corresponding composites. The results indicate that fabric structure has a significant effect on the yarn pull‐out property in fabric. In particular, the yarn pull‐out property of 4‐shaft reinforced satin was best in the four fabrics structure used in this article owing to the excellent integrity of the 4‐shaft reinforced satin fabric structure and the distribution characteristics of the fabric intersection points. The tribological performance of the 4‐shaft reinforced satin fabric enhanced composites were positively correlated with yarn pull‐out property because the yarn pull‐out property in fabric played an important role in energy dissipation and load carry capacity.</p>

Abstract:In order to produce high-quality raw silk of ultrafine size,various treatments were tested to dry,cook and reel raw cocoons of ultrafine filament whose single yarn size was about 1. 1 dtex. Based on the reeling data,appropriate major process condition for drying cocoons was: primary drying at 90 ℃ for 90 min and a range of long pile back for 12 h,second drying from 90 ℃ down to 75 ℃ evenly and maintaining at 75 ℃ for 120 min. That for cooking cocoons was: high temperature permeating stage at 95 ℃,low temperature permeating stage at 55 ℃,steaming stage at 95 ℃,finishing stage at 80 ～ 90 ℃,guarded exit stage at 50 ℃,and cooking time 7 min. That for reeling cocoons was: the collection device with magnetic eye aperture at 60 ～ 70 μm,croisure length about 14 cm,end-groping temperature at 90 ℃ ± 3 ℃,reeling water temperature at 36 ℃ ± 3 ℃,flow rate at 700 mL /min ± 100 mL /min,reeler speed about 80 ～ 100 r /min,and manual fixed-cocoon-number end feeding. The results indicated that drying cocoon with lower temperature and longer time and steaming cocoon with lower temperature and shorter time are favorable to improve the reelability of cocoons and cleanness and neatness of raw silk. Lower reeler speed,high end-groping temperature and higher reeling water temperature are favorable to increase reelability of cocoons. Turning the reeler's automatically sensed fixed-filament-size end feeding into manual fixed-cocoon-number end feeding,using small aperture magnetic eye collection device,and setting longer croisure length are favorable to enhance quality of the raw silk.

Abstract:Significant difference in microscopic structure of cocoon filaments from three silkworm varieties which shows extremely fine,coarse or normal size of silk were obseved in the present paper by scanning electron microscope.Results attained in this study showed that the hybrid Xinmiao×Mingri was not only much thicker in filament size but also better in tensile strength,which were confirmed by the physical properties of raw silk and fabric test.

Abstract:The graphene/Polyacrylonitrile (PAN) composites have drawn increased attention due to their significant improvements in mechanical and physical properties. A post treatment, enhancing the mechanical properties of the electrospun graphene/PAN fibrous yarns, was investigated in this study. The yarns obtained by this post treatment showed increased average strength and decreased elongation, which demonstrated that the as-reported method was an effective way to prepare higher performance electrospun graphene/PAN yarns. The method has potential application in preparation of micro ropes and self-assembled 3D electrospun fibrous yarns. Moreover, it is an innovation to apply dyeing during the investigation of the electrospun fibers under tension condition to analyze the tensile mechanism of yarns. The annular cracks were observed, which was recognized as the immediate cause for the yarns lengthening. Furthermore, according to its growth and fracture, the tensile mechanism of electrospun fibrous yarns was revealed.

Abstract:Pretension is regarded as an effective way to suppress the draping defects caused by the excessive shearing deformation of preforms during the manufacturing of woven composites. However, the research of shear-pretension coupling behavior on the 3D woven fabric uniform and variable thickness structures has not been carried out. In present study, the behavior of the two kinds of woven fabric structures is investigated. The picture frame shear tests for fabrics are conducted with applied pre-tension for the work. The relationship between shear stress and shear angle under different pre-tension levels of the two kinds of fabrics is analyzed. Furthermore, the detailed comparison of shear-pretension coupling behavior between the two kinds of woven fabric structures is also analyzed. Finally, the effect of variable thickness condition on the in-plane shear properties for woven fabric variable thickness structure is investigated. The research provides experimental data support for the forming design of preforms of heterogeneous 3D composite structures.

Abstract:The aim of this study is to develop and investigate mechanical properties of knitted unidirectional thermoplastic composite prepregs. Knitted prepregs were fabricated by using thermoplastic yarns (high density polyethylene and polypropylene) and high performance yarns (kevlar, basalt and carbon) in double jersey inlay structure. This is a new approach to combine the reinforcing fiber with resin forming thermoplastic fiber during the knitting operation. The structures were stacked further in three stacking sequences at different angles (0/0/0/0, 0/90/0/90, 0/90/90/0), and hot compression was used to convert them into composite prepregs by melting the thermoplastic component. Mechanical properties e.g. tensile strength and modulus, flexural strength, flexural modulus, impact energy absorbed etc. were investigated in detail. Full factorial experimental design was used in order to study the effect of main yarn, inlay yarn and direction of stacking/plying on mechanical properties of composites. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted by Minitab 17 software to estimate the significance of testing direction (T), type of inlay yarn (I), type of main yarn (M) and stacking sequence (S) on mechanical properties. Overall highest tensile and flexural strengths were observed for Carbon fiber based samples followed by Kevlar and Basalt respectively. Theoretical estimation of elastic modulus shows similar trend as the experimental results. The inter-laminar shear strength is maximum when the fiber orientation changes in each layer. Type of main yarn and inlay yarn have significant contribution on impact related properties. Depending upon type of material, these composites can be used in aerospace, automotive, civil and sports goods.

Abstract:The wicking ability of the fabric is one of the most important parameters that affect the comfort of clothing. Silk is a natural long-fiber material, and researching the water-absorption properties of natural silk yarn helps in developing textile products with specific performance characteristics, thereby enhancing the competitiveness of textiles in the market. This research aims to analyze the wicking behavior of silk yarn simulating their interlaced conditions when they were woven. To investigate the effect of yarn twist and yarn fineness, 13 different silk yarns were examined in individual and interlaced scenarios. Results showed that both yarn twist and fineness affect the wicking performance, and the permeability and capillary hydraulic diameter were calculated. A comparison of experimental results and best theoretical fits according to Fries and Dryer's proposed model. On the other hand, a good correlation was observed between the wicking length of single yarns and interlaced yarns. This suggests that the characteristics of single yarn can be potentially used for predicting the wicking behavior of woven textiles, where yarns form interlacements. This study can usher in innovations and enhancements that can benefit future virtual clothing design and real-world wear.

Abstract:The main structure of a fiber-reinforced composite is determined by a preform. The manufacturing of preforms is associated with the generation of fiber hairiness or even breakage due to friction, which can compromise the properties of the final composite component. This study simulated the frictional behavior of carbon fibers during flexible oriented three-dimensional weaving to determine the processing parameters that affect yarn damage. The normal load and rubbing angle affected the generation of hairiness, while tension was the main factor for yarn damage. However, sliding frequency had a minimal effect. Therefore, the normal load and tension must be controlled during weaving, while weaving speed can be increased while ensuring the stability of the weaving process. These findings provide an experimental and theoretical basis for reducing damage during preform weaving.

Abstract:In this study, eight types of materials including nanoparticles (Cu and CaCO3), metallic ions (Ca2+ and Cu2+), and amino acid substances (serine, tyrosine, sericin amino acid, and fibroin amino acid) were used as additives in silkworm diets to obtain in-situ modified silk fiber composites. The results indicate that tyrosine and fibroin amino acids significantly increase potassium content in silk fibers and induce the transformation of alpha-helices and random coils to beta-sheet structures, resulting in higher crystallinities and better mechanical properties. However, the other additives-modified silk fibers show a decrease in beta-sheet contents and a slight increase or even decrease in tensile strengths. This finding provides a green and effective approach to produce mechanically enhanced silk fibers with high crystallinity on a large scale. Moreover, the modification mechanisms of these additives were discussed in this study, which could offer new insights into the design and regulation of modified fibers or composites with desirable properties and functions.

Abstract:Worldwide yarn diversity in terms of structure and properties has increased in recent years. Especially composite yarns produced by multiple components have become very preferable in both weaving and knitting sectors. Among these yarns, core and dual core-spun yarn are more prominent in some areas due to their particular performance. In this study, the structure and properties of plain, elastane cored, and elastane + filament cored composite yarns, which were spun by using cotton as sheath fibers, are comparatively investigated. With a constant Ne 16/1 linear density, a carded yarn production line with modified ring-spinning system was used to produce the composite samples using 5.56% elastane ratio for both and 13.79% polybutylene terephthalate (PBT) ratio for dual core. It was observed that the strength of the composite yarns decreased, while the elongation values at the time of breaking tended to increase. There was some deterioration in transition from plain yarn to dual core composite yarn in terms of unevenness and yarn defects, while some improvement was observed in terms of yarn hairiness. In order to dwell on the causes of this situation, the surface and cross-sectional images of the yarns were also studied.

Abstract:This work presents an experimental investigation of the mechanical properties of composites reinforced with crocheted fabrics of miriti fibers (Mauritia flexuosa) in a polyester matrix. The fabrics were manufactured under different grammages, with and without alkaline fiber treatment. The composites were produced using two different viscosity conditions of the polyester matrix and part of these underwent post-cure treatment at 60 °C. In order to evaluate the effects of the input variables, the samples were produced by manual lamination with curing under vacuum, following a complete factorial experimental matrix type 2 4 , tested according to the ASTM D 3039. The results showed that the variables alkaline treatment of the fibers and viscosity of the matrix presented statistically significant effects on the responses limit of tensile strength and modulus of elasticity. The highest level of tensile strength (13.02 MPa) was obtained in composites with alkaline treatment of the fibers, fabric grammage 473.9 g/cm 2 , matrix with higher viscosity and post-cure application, while the modulus of elasticity obtained the best performance (1.59 GPa) in samples without alkaline treatment of the fibers, manufactured with the fabric of lower grammage, with a more viscous matrix and that underwent post-curing.

Abstract:To study the influence of warp knitting on the properties of vortex spinning polyester yarn (VSPY), three kinds of structures were knitted with VSPY compared with compact spinning cotton yarn (CSCY). The mechanical properties and appearance performance of the yarns before and after warp knitting and the yarn tension during warp knitting were tested. The results demonstrated that the yarn tension fluctuation and maximum tension of VSPY were smaller than that of CSCY, and with the increase of under lapping, the average yarn tension of yarns was reduced. After warp knitting, due to the wrapped fiber of VSPY being damaged, the mechanical properties of VSPY decreased. The breaking strength, elongation, and wear resistance of VSPY were 18.4%, 85.9%, and 30.4% higher than those of CSCY, respectively. With the increase of under lapping, the damage of breaking strength and elongation of VSPY decreased. The hairiness index (S3) of the original VSPY was 0.06/m, and the S3 of CSCY was about 62 times that of VSPY. After warp knitting, the S3 of VSPY was 0/m, and that of CSCY was 0.17/m. It is concluded that the VSPY is more suitable than the CSCY for warp knitting.

Abstract:Experiments and characterization of carbon fiber friction on braiding carriers. Reducing the wear of carbon fibers on braiding carriers is the key to manufacturing high‐performance carbon fiber composite prefabricated parts. In this study, a new analytical model is developed to describe the local friction behavior of yarns on braiding carriers. The degree of yarn wear is characterized by calculating the gray value of carbon fiber hairiness and observing the micro‐surface morphology of carbon fibers. The wear characteristics of carbon fiber yarns under the multi‐factor coupling influences of yarn tension, unwinding speed, and guiding element characteristics were considered. The results show that increases in unwinding angle and unwinding speed both increase the wear of carbon fiber yarns. Eliminating the effect of unwinding angle can reduce the yarn hairiness by more than 60%, alleviate the yarn tension fluctuation by more than 70%, and improve the yarn tension stability by more than 75%. Meanwhile, the relationship between the wrapping angle between the yarn and the yarn bobbin, the unwinding angle, and the yarn tension was established according to the Capstan Equation. A method is proposed to improve the characteristics and spatial position of the guiding elements to obtain more intact yarn and low‐damage yarn surfaces. Abstract:Force analysis of weaving yarns. Stress‐ strain curves and fractures sections of composites with different fabric structures under tensile load. Stress‐ strain curves and fracture mechanism of composites subjected to bending loads. The component yarns and fabrics effected the formability and stability of preforms, and finally determined the performance of corresponding composites. In this research, four typical fabric structures of carbon fiber resin composites (CFRC) were introduced to conduct the comparative investigation. The stability of component yarns in natural state and in fabrics have been discussed at mesoscopic scale, and the main methods to improve the structural stability of preforms were proposed. Composites with and without stable‐structural fibers and fabrics were manufactured by the modified curing process, and the yarn cross‐sections in specimens were analyzed. The tensile and bending performance of these composite specimens was comparatively conducted to discuss the influence of stable preforms on the elastic properties. The fracture mode and mechanism of specimens were illustrated in meso‐scale. The results depicted that yarns and fabrics with stable‐structural cross‐section could ensure a high fiber volume fraction, reducing the curvature of load‐bearing yarns, and effectively reduce the yarn curvature along bearing direction. The high interfacial bonding strength of composites with stable geometrical fabrics exhibited the excellent in‐plane mechanical properties, and presented the obvious brittle fracture characteristics when the fibers fully exert their load‐bearing capacity. Highlights Stable‐structural fibers result in the prominent performance of composites. Performance of composites with stable preforms show the low dispersion. Stable cross‐section of component yarns can enhance the stability of preforms. Low curvature yarns lead to brittle fracture characteristics of composites.

Abstract:The application of carbon fiber/epoxy composites places more requirements on the selection of fabrics to meet the needs of structural components. Due to the large design space for reinforced fabric patterns, the relationship between the reinforcements and properties is essential to further understand. Four typical fabrics were manufactured in this research, named non-interlaced bidirectional fabrics, plain weave laminated fabrics, angle-interlock fabrics and bidirectional angle-interlock fabrics. The structural features of fabrics were analyzed by using representative geometric unit, and the symmetry properties were discussed based on group theory. Vacuum assistant resin transfer molding was adopted to obtain the corresponding resin matrix composite specimens. Quasi-static tensile and bending tests were conducted on these specimens. The stress-strain curves of specimens were illustrated, and the failure characterizations were also analyzed in mesoscopic scale. The results showed that the high crimp of yarns reduced the stability of composites. Both the tensile and flexural properties were affected by the curvature of yarns. The research results provided a theoretical basis for the selection of fabric structure and the application of carbon fiber/epoxy composites.

Abstract:Process optimization is the key task of any engineering application to maximize the desirable output by optimizing the range of process parameters. In this research work, jute composites were fabricated by the hand lay-up method with the aim of optimizing the process parameter such as yarn linear density, fabric areal density and fabric laying angle on the mechanical properties of the textile composite structures using the Taguchi L9 orthogonal matrix. The plain-woven and twill-woven fabrics of Jute fabrics were produced through specialized handloom machine and used as preform for composite production. Epoxy resin was used as the matrix component. Signal-to-noise ratio ratio, analysis of variance and experimental verification of results were analysed. The results showed that fabric laying angle played major role to achieve high mechanical properties of composites and twill-woven structural reinforcement yields higher mechanical properties. Subsequent to this optimal process, parameters have been arrived for all the composites, and finally it was verified through the experimental results.
