Abstract:Introduced into China since 1980s, pragmatics has undergone a robust development in China, and has been a focus of attention for both foreign language and Chinese language circles. The foreign language researchers mainly work on what can be calledmicro-pragmatics, subsuming topics like speech acts, conversational implicature, relevance theory, deixis and presupposition. The Chinese language researchers are more interested in the perspective that pragmatics affords for the study of grammatical and semantic phenomena in Chinese. In addition to micro-pragmatics, they also work on topics as regards discourse analysis, functional grammar and cognitive grammar. Generally speaking, pragmatic research in China tends to follow the development abroad and therefore lacks originality in methodology.

Abstract:AbstractAs Chinese is quickly becoming the language for intercultural communication, rules and norms of interaction in Chinese – how to speak with the level of politeness and formality required in a situation, or to understand another person’s intention communicated indirectly – are critical aspects of learning Chinese. Despite this growing interest in Chinese teaching and research, most studies have focused on formal aspects of Chinese competence (e.g., grammar and character knowledge), and little research has addressed pragmatic aspects of Chinese learning (Taguchi, 2015). To fill this gap, this thematic review presents four empirical studies on pragmatics in Chinese as a second language. Four studies deal with a variety of pragmatic features in Chinese (e.g., sentence final particles, formulaic expressions, request-making forms, mitigation strategies, stance markers) to illustrate how those features can inform us about L2 Chinese learners’ pragmatic competence and development.

Abstract:The study of Chinese syntax began with the advent of Chinese grammar. Syntactic classifications have hitherto been carried out in the light of different grammatical theories and systems, giving birth to diverse and even mutually exclusive sentence patterns. It is suggested in this essay that, in the study of Chinese syntax, priority be given to the establishment of a whole system of scientifically defined, general, concise, and practical sentence patterns in consistency with Chinese grammatical rules.

Abstract:This chapter presents a critical review of current empirical research on pragmatics learning and teaching in L2 Chinese. Compared with other areas in Chinese SLA, investigation of L2 pragmatics has started rather late and received insufficient attention; only a small body of research has been conducted to explore the pragmatic ability of Chinese L2 learners. Though limited in number, prior research has addressed several core issues of L2 pragmatics, such as acquisitional path, role of learning contexts, and effects of instruction. This chapter reviews these studies in terms of their theoretical backgrounds, methodologies, key findings, and pedagogical implications. Built on these reviews, it also discusses and suggests areas for future exploration. This chapter presents a critical review of empirical research on pragmatics learning and teaching in second language (L2) Chinese. It reviews the studies in terms of their theoretical backgrounds, methodologies, key findings, and pedagogical implications. Interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) is an interdisciplinary field that studies how "nonnative speakers understand and carry out linguistic actions in the target language and how they acquire second language pragmatic knowledge". The chapter discusses the definition of pragmatics, and also reviews the historical development of the research in ILP as well as in Chinese L2 pragmatics. A review of the existing ILP literature shows a noticeable imbalance in its research targets. The chapter discusses three core issues: developmental, environmental, and instructional issues that have been examined in Chinese L2 pragmatics, reviews empirical studies that have explored Chinese L2 learners' pragmatic development, and summarizes their key findings.

Abstract:With the rapid development of Interlanguage Pragmatics, pragmatic competence has become one of the key research issues in Pragmatics, Second Language Acquisition, Language Testing, etc. The present article first reviews the major analytical frameworks of pragmatic competence put forward by Thomas (1983), Bachman (1990: 84-98), Jung (2002) and CHEN (2008; 2009: 204-205). Then, it proposes that CHEN’s framework is more comprehensive and systematic than the previous ones, and thus could serve as a much-better analytic framework for the studies in Interlanguage Pragmatics. Finally, the study points out some problems that need to be further tackled for CHEN’s framework on pragmatic competence.

Abstract:During the past decade, studies on translanguaging have made increasing exploration in terms of theoretical expansion, educational practice and social interaction, which are significant to trans-disciplinary linguistic research. This paper selects a total of 439 pieces of journal articles published between 2010 to September 2021（10 in Chinese, 429 in English）, which involve research on the theoretical development and empirical studies in different contexts. This paper focuses on the two categories of translanguaging, which are theoretical translanguaging and pedagogical translanguaging respectively, further makes a deep exploration in the paths of sociolinguistics and applied linguistics, and therefore provides reflections and prospects on translanguaging research and multilingual education in accordance with Chinese context.

Abstract:This article reviews a selected sample of 70 empirical studies in journal articles and doctoral dissertations on language assessment in China between 2011 and 2018. Following a brief introduction to the history and current state of language assessment in China, the article presents a critical review of language assessment research on six themes that have aroused the greatest interest from researchers in the country, including (1) test reliability and validity; (2) factors affecting test performance; (3) rating and rating scales; (4) technology and language testing; (5) test washback; and (6) classroom-based assessment. In addition to situating the commentary on the studies within the social, cultural and historical contexts of China, this article outlines the scholarly contributions of these studies to the wider international field of language learning, teaching and assessment. It concludes with recommendations on areas in need of further development over the coming decades.

Abstract:As one of the core research subjects in sociolinguistics,language variation is widely paid attention to in China.This paper makes a statistical analysis of the articles on language variation published in CSSCI over recent 20 years(1992-2011),suggesting that research on language variation in China has made considerable progress during this period.However,it is pointed out that there are still some problems with the research method,contents and depth.The paper reviews on the current research results,which is conducive to grasping the research development trend of language variation in China,thus providing reference for future research work.

Abstract:The idea of linguistic relativity has given rise to much controversy once it was proposed during 1930s and 1940s. There have been rare empirical studies in spite of the great concern and much comment on it, which can rarely lead to convincing conclusions. Since 1980s and 1990s interest in the hypothesis has been revived with the focus on empirical assessment and scientific methods, which has resulted in some distinguished progress. Till now, however, there has been rare serious research concerned in China and most of the reviews related are based on second-hand materials. The article is meant to provide some background knowledge for related research on Chinese by a survey of the empirical studies in the west in recent years.

Abstract:Applied Linguistics,as an important platform of showing language application and research in China,has witnessed 20 years of development.This paper conducts a panoramic review by analyzing more than 1000 articles published in Applied Linguistics.It is shown that Chinese language study is of extensive range with clear directions.Researchers give the priority to academic construction,with the highlight of collective research.The application of field study and corpus speeds up the development of empirical and quantitative research.From experience to the promotion of empirical study,the theoretical consciousness of researchers is running through with strengthened academic norms.Case studies,the orientation towards "problem solving" and the improvement of quality and quantity regarding academic review are supposed to be strengthened in the future.

Abstract:This paper reports the results of a review of research articles on the teaching of Chinese as a second or foreign language published in four leading mainland Chinese journals during the years 2005–2015. The review found that Chinese language researchers are exploring a wide array of issues including language policy and planning, language learning and use, language pedagogy, teacher development and language testing. These studies document the efforts that Chinese language researchers and teachers have made to meet the explosively growing demand for Chinese language learning in the world. Furthermore, it was noted that the leading Chinese journals have become more receptive to empirical studies although a large number of non-empirical articles are still being published. Overall, research in these journals is still beset with different challenges, and there is a need for more rigorous scholarship on the part of researchers. For this reason, the review concludes with suggestions for Chinese journals so that they can promote high-quality research to support the global development of Chinese language education.

Abstract:The paper provides a review of critical discourse analysis (CDA) studies in China from the 1990s. It starts with the origin, definition, and research scope of CDA in America and Europe. Although Chinese scholars began to show interest in CDA studies in 1995, about two decades later than their western counterparts, they have made considerable achievements in the field. On the review research level, quite a few independent studies indicate that CDA studies are attracting increasing attention from the field of linguistics, media studies, politics, and philosophy; theoretical and methodological research reveals that Chinese scholars are endeavoring to yield original research results on the basis of CDA studies abroad; practical research shows that CDA has been applied to the investigation of various discourses to disclose social reality, especially the inter-relationship between discourse, power and ideology.
