A review on empirical research of linguistic relativity in recent years

Abstract:The idea of linguistic relativity has given rise to much controversy once it was proposed during 1930s and 1940s. There have been rare empirical studies in spite of the great concern and much comment on it, which can rarely lead to convincing conclusions. Since 1980s and 1990s interest in the hypothesis has been revived with the focus on empirical assessment and scientific methods, which has resulted in some distinguished progress. Till now, however, there has been rare serious research concerned in China and most of the reviews related are based on second-hand materials. The article is meant to provide some background knowledge for related research on Chinese by a survey of the empirical studies in the west in recent years.
