Abstract:A (2+1)-dimensional fourth order Burgers–KdV equation with variable coefficients (vcBKdV) is studied here and interesting wave-type solutions with variable amplitudes and velocities are reported. The model has been not previously studied in the chosen form and it presents a twofold interest: as a model describing a rich variety of phenomena and as a higher-order equation solving difficulties generated by the presence of the variable coefficients. The novelty of our approach is related to the use of the functional expansion, a solving method based on an auxiliary equation that generalizes other approaches, such as, for example, the G′G proved here. We use a similarity reduction with a nonlinear wave variable that leads to a determining system that it is not usually algebraic, but an over-determined system of partial differential equations. It depends on 14 constant or functional parameters and can generate much richer classes of solutions. Three such classes of solutions, corresponding to the case when a specific form of the generalized reaction–diffusion equation is used as auxiliary equation, are considered. The influence on the dynamical behavior of two important factors, the choices of the auxiliary equation and the form of solution, are studied by providing graphical representations of specific solutions for various values of the parameters.

Abstract:The Element-Free Galerkin (EFG) method has got some applications in solid mechanics and materials mechanics. However, numerical solutions of EFG method for unsteady convection dominated problems are corrupted by spurious oscillations. Here, some stabilization methods are constructed for mitigating the spurious oscillation, which are Meshfree Streamline Upwind Petrov-Galerkin (MFSUPG), Meshfree Galerkin Least-Squares (MFGLS), Meshfree Sub-Grid Scale (MFSGS) and Meshfree Least-Squares (MFLS) method. Numerical results for solving Burgers' equation indicate that MFSUPG, MFSGS and MFLS can be used for solving Burgers' equation of 1D and MFLS is the best one in all constructed methods. Although shock disconnection appears along catercorner in Burgers' equation of 2D, there are not spurious oscillations in the neighborhood of catercorner when MFLS is applied. However, spurious oscillations in convection dominated Burgers' equation of 1D can't be eliminated by MFGLS. All in all, MFLS combined with EFG method is promising due to its high accuracy, good stability and convenient preprocess.

Abstract:Korteweg-de Vries equation and KdV-Burgers' equation are important nonlinear evolutionary equations widely used in engineering and mathematics. These equations have a nonlinear term which makes such problems very complex, thus, it is hard to obtain a high-precision numerical solution. This paper compares the space-time polynomial particular solutions method (ST-MPPS) with the Fourier spectral method to solve the KdV and KdV-Burgers' equation for different final time. Numerical experiments demonstrate that the space-time polynomial particular solutions method has high precision and robustness when solving dispersion and nonlinear scattering problems.

Abstract:A multi-domain reproducing kernel finite difference method is presented for Burgers equation.It is a domain decomposition method,which combines reproducing kernel finite difference method with penalty method.Firstly,we decompose the global computational domain into a number of subdomains,hence the equation can be solved in subdomains instead of the whole domain.Then,we apply reproducing kernel finite difference method for space discretion,a fourth order Runge-Kutta scheme for time discretion in each subdomain.Finally,we apply penalty method for dealing with the inner boundary condition,so that each subdomain with inner boundary condition can be solved as a whole while not considering it independently.Numerical examples are given to test the efficiency of the represented method.

Abstract:The generalized Riccati equation vational expansion method is extended in this paper. Several exact solutions for the generalized Burgers-Fisher equation with variable coefficients are obtained by this method, and some of which are derived for the first time. It is concluded from the results that this approach is simple and efficient even in solving partial differential equations with variable coefficients.

Abstract:For Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries(KdVB) equation defined on a finite spatial interval with unknown viscosity, a nonlinear boundary control law and an adaptation law are proposed. Based on Lyapunov direct method, the global asymptotic stability of the closed-loop system is proved. The stochastic case of Burgers-Korteweg-de Vries equation is also considered. The exponential stability of the delayed KdVB equation is also proved if the delay parameter is sufficiently small.

Abstract:Making use of a extended tanh method with symbolic computation, we find a new complex line soliton for the two-dimensional (2D) KdV–Burgers equation. Its real part is the sum of the shock wave solution of a 2D Burgers equation and the solitary wave solution of a 2D KdV (KP) equation, and its imaginary part is the product of the shock wave solution of a 2D Burgers equation and the solitary wave solution of a 2D MKdV (MKP) equation.

Abstract:Burgers' equation with fixed Dirichlet boundary conditions is considered on generic bounded intervals. By using the Hopf-Cole transformation and the exact operational solution recently established for linear reaction-diffusion equations with constant coefficients, an exact solution in the time domain is implicitly derived by means of inverse Laplace transforms. Analytic inverses, whenever they exist, can be obtained in closed form using Mellin transforms. However, highly efficient algorithms are available, and numerical inverses in the time domain are always possible, regardless of the complexity of the Laplace domain expressions. Two illustration tests show that the results coincide well with those of classical exact solutions. Compared to the solutions obtained with series expressions or by numerical methods, closed-form expressions, even in the Laplace domain, represent an innovative alternative and new perspectives can be envisaged. The exact solution via the inverse Laplace transform is shown to be more computationally efficient and thus provides a reference point for numerical and semi-analytical methods.

Numerical Methods for Partial Differential Equations

Abstract:A new fast numerical scheme is proposed for solving time-dependent coupled Burgers' equations. The idea of operator splitting is used to decompose the original problem into nonlinear pure convection subproblems and diffusion subproblems at each time step. Using Taylor's expansion, the nonlinearity in convection subproblems is explicitly treated by resolving a linear convection system with artificial inflow boundary conditions that can be independently solved. A multistep technique is proposed to rescue the possible instability caused by the explicit treatment of the convection system. Meanwhile, the diffusion subproblems are always self-adjoint and coercive at each time step, and they can be efficiently solved by some existing preconditioned iterative solvers like the preconditioned conjugate galerkin method, and so forth. With the help of finite element discretization, all the major stiffness matrices remain invariant during the time marching process, which makes the present approach extremely fast for the time-dependent nonlinear problems. Finally, several numerical examples are performed to verify the stability, convergence and performance of the new method. (c) 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:The Burgers equation can describe some phenomena such as turbulence, shock wave and traffic flow dynamics problems. Under consideration in this paper is a discrete Burgers equation, which can be viewed as the discrete counterpart of Burgers equation. Firstly, we correspond this discrete equation to the famous continuous Burgers equation under the continuous limit. Secondly, based on its 2 × 2 matrix linear spectral problem, we construct the discrete generalized (m,N−m)-fold Darboux transformation (DT) to derive various exact solutions covering kink soliton, rational solutions, semi-rational solutions as well as their mixed superposition solutions. Furthermore, we discuss kink multi-soliton resonant phenomena through the graphics analysis and use asymptotic analysis technique to investigate the limit states of various exact solutions. Finally, the dynamical evolutions of kink soliton solutions are studied through numerical simulations. The results obtained in this paper may be useful for exploring physical phenomena governed by Burgers equation.

It is shown that the exp-function method, with the help of symbolic computation, provides a straightforward and powerful mathematical tool to solve the nonlinear evolution equation with variable coefficients in mathematical physics.

Abstract:We provide a new analytical approach to operator splitting for equations of the type $u_t=Au+u u_x$ where $A$ is a linear differential operator such that the equation is well-posed. Particular examples include the viscous Burgers' equation, the Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) equation, the Benney-Lin equation, and the Kawahara equation. We show that the Strang splitting method converges with the expected rate if the initial data are sufficiently regular. In particular, for the KdV equation we obtain second-order convergence in $H^r$ for initial data in $H^{r+5}$ with arbitrary $r\ge 1$.
