All of the physical properties of solid and laser parameters could make contributions to the matrix effect. Abstract:A laser ionization orthogonal time-of-flight mass spectrometer with a low-pressure source and high laser irradiance was used to analyze 27 solid samples with 9 different matrices, including aluminium, soil, copper sulfide, zinc sulfide, iron, nickel, copper, zinc, and tungsten. The influence of laser energy on non-stoichiometric effects, such as matrix effects and elemental fractionation, has been investigated. The results indicate that matrix effects can be alleviated to a great extent at high laser irradiance. Additionally, with the irradiance of 1010–1011 W cm−2, most elements presented relatively stable relative sensitivity coefficients (RSC), while W, Pb, and Bi demonstrated unusual characteristics that their RSCs increased along with increasing laser energy.

Abstract:Mass spectrometry using a laser ionization source has played a significant role in elemental analysis. Three types of techniques are widely used: high irradiance laser ionization mass spectrometry is capable of rapid determination of elements in solids; single particle mass spectrometry is a powerful tool for single particle characterization; and resonance ionization mass spectrometry is applied for isotope ratio measurements with high sensitivity and selectivity. In this review, the main features of the laser ablation process and plasma characterization by mass spectrometry are summarized. Applications of these three techniques for elemental analysis are discussed.
Minimizing Matrix Effect by Femtosecond Laser Ablation and Ionization in Elemental Determination.

Abstract:Matrix effect is unavoidable in direct solid analysis, which usually is a leading cause of the non-stoichiometric effect in quantitative analysis. In this research, experiments were carried out to study the overall characteristics of atomization and ionization in laser-solid interaction. Both nanosecond (ns) and femtosecond (fs) lasers were applied in a buffer-gas-assisted ionization source coupled with an orthogonal time-of-flight mass spectrometer. Twenty-nine solid standards of ten different matrices, including six metals and four dielectrics, were analyzed. The results indicate that the fs-laser mode offers more stable relative sensitivity coefficients (RSCs) with irradiance higher than 7 x 10(13) W.cm(-2), which could be more reliable in the determination of element composition of solids. The matrix effect is reduced by half when the fs-laser is employed, owing to the fact that the fs-laser ablation and ionization (fs-LAI) incurs an almost heat-free ablation process and creates a dense plasma for the stable ionization.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.
Elemental Fractionation During Condensation of Plasma Plumes Generated by Laser Ablation: A Tof-Sims Study of Condensate Blankets

Abstract:Ion imaging of the condensate blanket around a laser ablation site provides a window to study elemental fractionation during condensation of a plasma plume. Here we used a Time-of-Flight Secondary Ion Mass Spectrometer (ToF-SIMS) to conduct depth profiling of the condensate blanket produced by excimer 193 nm laser ablation of NIST 610 glass. Compositional zonings (Ca normalized) revealed by ToF-SIMS are associated with texture gradients in the condensate blanket, as characterized by Secondary Electron Microprobe (SEM) images. Elements that are more volatile than Ca are relatively enriched in the inner zones (proximal to the ablation site) while more refractory elements are variable in their distributions. Volatility and ionization potential exert influence on elemental fractionation in plasma plume condensation processes as documented by the contrasting fractionation behaviors of alkaline and alkaline earth metals. Compositional zonings in the condensate blanket are due to physical and chemical zonings (e.g., temperature, pressure, electron density, speciation, etc.) within the condensing plume as it expands and cools. Zoned condensation may be a primary mechanism driving the elemental fractionation associated with laser ablation.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a powerful and versatile analytical tool for real-time, simultaneous, and all-element detection. However, its broader applications were constrained by matrix effects, large signal uncertainty, molecular information absence, and limited mapping analysis. LIBS-based spectral tandem technologies aim to address these limitations by combining LIBS with elemental analytical technologies (laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy, X-ray fluorescence, and laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy), molecular spectroscopy (Raman spectroscopy and near-infrared spectroscopy), and scanning technologies (hyperspectral imaging). Tandem technologies offer complementary advantages over individual LIBS, including comprehensive elemental determination, bridging the gap between elemental and molecular information, and high spatial-resolution elemental mapping. This review focuses on the progress in measurement schemes, data fusion methods, unique synergic results, and future prospects. This work aims to guide analysts to address complex analytical tasks and foster mutually beneficial advancements wherein LIBS and other analytical technologies grow synergistically.

Abstract:Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) analysis with solid target is greatly affected by the physical morphology and chemical properties of the sample surface. Therefore, the analysis of matrix effect is greatly significant for the study of LIBS online detection. In view of the fact that the current research objects of LIBS are mostly flat samples, in this work, LIBS was used for the quantitative analysis of iron filings with different granularity. The nine kinds of iron filings used in the experiment were loose powder, granules or strips. In order to avoid splashing during the laser ablation of iron filings, the samples were stuck to the double-sided tape for fixing before the experiment. The 1 064 nm laser with the energy of 35 mJ was used as the ablation source. And the delay and gate width of detector were 1 and 10 mu s. In order to evaluate the influence of the matrix effect caused by the different particle size of the samples on the LIBS spectrum, firstly, the series of samples were classified by principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the four samples in powder form were separated, that is, the matrix effect caused by the difference in particle size was the main reason for the difference in the spectral signals of the sample. Secondly, the elemental characteristic line of Fe I 330. 635 nm in the C5 sample before and after grinding was taken as the research object. It was found by comparing the intensity and relative standard deviation (RSD) that the smaller the particle size, the stronger the line intensity and the better the stability. In order to correct the interference of the matrix effect on LIBS spectrum, two methods of sample grinding pretreatment and spectral data pretreatment were used. For the sample grinding pretreatment, the slender strip samples of C3 and C5 were grinded in the experiment, and the intensity and stability of the lines were greatly improved after grinding. For the spectral data pretreatment, the intensity normalization, multiple scattering correction (MSC) and the combination of them were studied respectively. The three spectral pretreatments all significantly improved the stability of the line. The quantitative results of Cu element were evaluated and compared by support vector machine (SVM) method. It was found that the calibration results obtained by the grinding samples combined with intensity normalization and MSC pretreatment were the best. Finally, the predicted relative error (RE) of the Cu element in S1 and S2 samples was reduced to 1. 745% and 1. 857%, respectively, and the root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) was 0. 020. This study can provide a certain method basis and reference for LIBS detection of the samples with irregular surface.
Contrasting Matrix Induced Elemental Fractionation in NIST SRM and Rock Glasses During Laser Ablation ICP-MS Analysis at High Spatial Resolution

Abstract:The greatest strength of the LA-ICP-MS technique is its application to microsampling in which extremely small pits are obtained. The results of this study highlight some significant different laser-induced fractionations between widely used external reference materials NIST SRM 610–614 and natural silicate reference materials (e.g., USGS reference glasses (GSE-1G, GSD-1G), MPI-DING glasses, USGS basalt glasses and zircon reference material GJ-1) at high spatial resolution analysis. For the sample matrices and analytical conditions used in this study, the laser-induced elemental fractionations for 63 selected isotopes are negligible at the spot sizes of 160–44 µm. However, the laser-induced elemental fractionations of Li, Na, Si, K, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rb, Cs and U (with respect to Ca) increase significantly with decreasing spot sizes from 44 µm to 32 µm, 24 µm and 16 µm in these natural silicate reference materials. Unlike in these sample matrices, laser-induced elemental fractionations of these elements in NIST SRM 610–614 are unique in that they are almost not affected by the change of spot sizes from 44 to 32 to 24 µm, with only slight increase at the spot sizes of 16 µm. The much less significant laser-induced elemental fractionation in NIST SRM 61X in comparison with other natural silicate materials makes them not ideal as external reference materials at high spatial resolution analysis. Alternatively, this NIST SRM 61X-specific matrix effect for Li, Na, K, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Rb, Cs and U can be minimized by using Si for internal standardization. U and Pb in zircon GJ-1 are exceptions, which are zircon-specific.

Abstract:A multifunctional sampling chamber was developed for laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) for field elemental analysis. The apparatus consisted of a chamber, an optical module, and a spectrometer controlled by lab-constructed software to achieve full automation. A number of samples may be simultaneously and automatically measured since a servomotor rotated eight sample compartments in the chamber that may filled with inert gas to enhance the intensity of the signal. A heater in the sample compartments allowed variation of the temperature. The system was used for the rapid and direct measurement of solid, liquid, and powders after simple preprocessing. The apparatus was evaluated for the qualitative analysis of drilling fluid. Eleven elements, Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn, Si, Al, Cr, Ca, Mg, K, and Na, were detected. The results demonstrate successful application for the analysis of multiple elements by LIBS.
A Data Selection Method for Matrix Effects and Uncertainty Reduction for Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:Severe matrix effects and high signal uncertainty are two key bottlenecks for the quantitative performance and wide applications of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Based on the understanding that the superposition of both matrix effects and signal uncertainty directly affects plasma parameters and further influences spectral intensity and LIBS quantification performance, a data selection method based on plasma temperature matching (DSPTM) was proposed to reduce both matrix effects and signal uncertainty. By selecting spectra with smaller plasma temperature differences for all samples, the proposed method was able to build up the quantification model to rely more on spectra with smaller matrix effects and signal uncertainty, therefore improving final quantification performance. When applied to quantitative analysis of the zinc content in brass alloys, it was found that both accuracy and precision were improved using either a univariate model or multiple linear regression (MLR). More specifically, for the univariate model, the root-mean-square error of prediction (RMSEP), the determination coefficients (R 2) and relative standard derivation (RSD) were improved from 3.30%, 0.864 and 18.8% to 1.06%, 0.986 and 13.5%, respectively; while for MLR, RMSEP, R 2 and RSD were improved from 3.22%, 0.871 and 26.2% to 1.07%, 0.986 and 17.4%, respectively. These results prove that DSPTM can be used as an effective method to reduce matrix effects and improve repeatability by selecting reliable data.
Methods of Data Processing for Trace Elements Analysis Using Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:With the development of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), increasing numbers of researchers have begun to focus on problems of the application. We are not just satisfied with analyzing what kinds of elements are in the samples but are also eager to accomplish quantitative detection with LIBS. There are several means to improve the limit of detection and stability, which are important to quantitative detection, especially of trace elements, increasing the laser energy and the resolution of spectrometer, using dual pulse setup, vacuuming the ablation environment etc. All of these methods are about to update the hardware system, which is effective but expensive. So we establish the following spectrum data processing methods to improve the trace elements analysis in this paper: spectrum sifting, noise filtering, and peak fitting. There are small algorithms in these three method groups, which we will introduce in detail. Finally, we discuss how these methods affect the results of trace elements detection in an experiment to analyze the lead content in Chinese cabbage.
[Influence of laser power and incident angle as well as testing distance on laser inducted breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technology for spectroscopy diagnosis and multi-element analysis]

Abstract:Laser inducted breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technology has been used widely for the multi-element analysis of different samples and also an effective way to realize the spectroscopy diagnosis applied to calculating the electron temperature and vibration-rotation temperature etc of some certain elements. It is a highly effective measurement for its non-contact and nondestructive on-line analysis with the help of a high-speed response CCD camera. In the present paper, the authors tested an alley though LIBS technology to determine its elements in terms of species and quantities and also discussed some influences of the incident angle and the power changes of the laser beam as well as the measurement distance changes on the experimental results and and gave appropriate theoretical explanation.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) with advantages of rapid, in situ , and little sample pretreatment has been used in various fields. However, LIBS technology remains challenging in the detection of halogens, isotopes, and samples with similar elements. Therefore, molecular emission was proposed to improve the detection ability of LIBS. In this review, we introduced molecular emissions formed by organic elements, oxidizable elements, and halogens. Then, molecular emission in different experiment parameters, such as the acquisition window, laser characters (laser energy, laser wavelength, and pulse duration), and ambient atmospheres, were discussed. In the end, we highlight the application of molecular emissions on element content determination, material type classification, and combustion and explosion process monitoring.

Effect of Sampling Geometry on Elemental Emissions in Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy

Abstract:In laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), a focused laser pulse is used to ablate material from a surface and form a laser plasma that excites the vaporized material. Geometric factors, such as the distance between the sample and the focusing lens and the method of collecting the plasma light, can greatly influence the analytical results. To obtain the best quantitative results, one must consider this geometry. Here we report the results of an investigation of the effect of sampling geometry on LIBS measurements. Diagnostics include time-resolved spectroscopy and temporally and spectrally resolved imaging using an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). Parameters investigated include the type of lens (cylindrical or spherical) used to focus the laser pulse onto the sample, the focal length of the lens (75 or 150 mm), the lens-to-sample distance (LTSD), the angle-of-incidence of the laser pulse onto the sample, and the method used to collect the plasma light (lens or fiber-optic bundle). From these studies, it was found that atomic emission intensities, plasma temperature, and mass of ablated material depend strongly on the LTSD for both types of lenses. For laser pulse energies above the breakdown threshold for air, these quantities exhibit symmetric behavior about an LTSD approximately equal to the back focal length for cylindrical lenses and asymmetric behavior for spherical lenses. For pulse energies below the air breakdown threshold, results obtained for both lenses display symmetric behavior. Detection limits and measurement precision for the elements Be, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Sr, determined with the use of 14 certified reference soils and stream sediments, were found to be independent of the lens used. Time-resolved images of the laser plasma show that at times >5 μs after plasma formation a cloud of emitting atoms extends significantly beyond the centrally located, visibly white, intense plasma core present at early times (<0.3 μs). It was determined that, by collecting light from the edges of the emitting cloud, one can record spectra using an ungated detector (no time resolution) that resemble closely the spectra obtained from a gated detector providing time-resolved detection. This result has implications in the development of less expensive LIBS detection systems.

Abstract:The matrix effect is one of the main bottlenecks for the laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique. In this work, image-assisted, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (IA-LIBS) based on the Lomakin-Scherbe formula was put forward as a correction to the matrix effect. The brightness and area information in the plasma image was extracted to correct the spectral line intensities among which the brightness information characterizes the plasma temperature, and the area information characterizes the ablative mass. To verify the feasibility of this method, the experiment was conducted on metal samples and pressed samples. The method was applied for quantitative analysis of copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg) in metal samples and chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn) in pressed samples. For the metal samples, after correcting the matrix effect by IA-LIBS, the determination coefficient R squared (R2) of Cu I 510.55 nm and Mg I 518.36 nm calibration curves were increased from 0.726 to 0.942 to 0.992 and 0.988, respectively. The root-mean-square-error of cross-validation (RMSECV) and the average relative error (ARE) decreased by 75.10% and 77.18%, respectively. For the pressed samples, R2 of Cr I 520.84 nm and Mn I 403.07 nm calibration curves corrected by IA-LIBS increased from 0.364 to 0.098 to 0.975 and 0.980; and RMSECV and ARE decreased by 77.88% and 83.83%, respectively. The experimental results showed that IA-LIBS had an obvious improvement on elimination of the matrix effect for the different samples and the different elements. Therefore, IA-LIBS will become a promising technology and will greatly promote the development of LIBS in various fields.

Abstract:An innovative technology has been developed involving a simple and sensitive optical spectrometric method termed matrix-assisted plasma atomization emission spectrometry (MAPAES) for surface sampling elemental analysis using a piece of filter paper (FP) for sample introduction. MAPAES was carried out by direct interaction of the plasma tail plume with the matrix surface. The FP absorbs energy from the plasma source and releases combustion heating to the analytes originally present on its surface, thus to promote the atomization and excitation process. The matrix-assisted plasma atomization excitation phenomenon was observed for multiple elements. The FP matrix served as the partial energy producer and also the sample substrate to adsorb sample solution. Qualitative and quantitative determinations of metal ions were achieved by atomic emission measurements for elements Ba, Cu, Eu, In, Mn, Ni, Rh and Y. The detection limits were down to pg level with linear correlation coefficients better than 0.99. The proposed MAPAES provides a new way for atomic spectrometry which offers advantages of fast analysis speed, little sample consumption, less sample pretreatment, small size and cost-effective.

Abstract:Laser-induced plasma spectroscopy of metal materials including copper,magnalium and steel was investigated.The effects of delay time and ambient atmospheres on the emission characteristics of laser-induced plasma spectroscopy were studied.Experimental results show that proper delay time and ambient atmospheres of argon can notably enhance signal-to-noise ratio of spectra,thus the accuracy of elemental content analysis was improved.

Abstract:<p>Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is regarded as the future superstar for chemical analysis, but the relatively high measurement uncertainty and error remain the persistent challenges for its technological development as well as wide applications. In the present work, mechanisms of measurement uncertainty generation and basic principle of signal uncertainty and matrix effects impacting quantification performance were explained. Furthermore, methods for raw signal improvement including sample preparation, system optimization, and especially plasma modulation, which modulates the laser-induced plasma evolution process for higher signal repeatability and signal-to-noise ratio, were reviewed and discussed. Different LIBS mathematical quantification methods including calibration-free methods and calibration methods, which were classified into physical-principle based calibration model, data-driven based calibration model, and hybrid model, were discussed and compared. Overall, a framework of quantification improvement strategy including key steps and main way-out was summarized and recommended for LIBS future development.</p>
