Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique is widely used to analyze the composition and the concentration of elements in materials,which is based on the atomic excitation and emission spectrum.It has many advantages,such as rapid,multi-element simultaneous detection and without sample pretreatment.In this paper,research progress on the application of metal element detection in such fields as alloy,soil,water,and food is reviewed.It is considered that there are some problems in this technology at present,such as low detection accuracy,poor repeatability,unstable detection signal.It is also found that the research and development of LIBS based metal element detection instrument should be developed towards the direction of conventional,portable and high precision.

Abstract:Spectral interference and self-absorption seriously affect the accuracy of quantitative analysis in laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). In this work, we used LIBS assisted with laser-stimulated absorption (LSA-LIBS) to solve these problems. Taking nickel (Ni) in the alloy structural steel as an example, the results show that the spectral interference of Ni lines was eliminated, the self-absorption factor of the Ni I 341.47 nm line was reduced by 85%, and the average relative error for determination of Ni element was reduced by 83% using LSA-LIBS. The results indicate that spectral interference and self-absorption can be reduced simultaneously in LSA-LIBS.

It provides valuable information about the composition of the target material. LIBS has proved its potential application in the analysis of impurities, pollutants and toxic elements in various types of matrices of different samples (solid, liquid and gases), even those present under difficult and harsh environmental conditions. Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has emerged as a promising technique for both quantitative and qualitative analysis of elements in a wide variety of samples. However, conventional LIBS suffers from a high limit of detection (LoD) compared with other analytical techniques. This review briefly discusses several methods that demonstrate the applicability and prospects for trace element detection while lowering the LoD when coupled with LIBS. This review compares the enhancement mechanisms, advantages, and limitations of these techniques. Finally, the recent development and application of LIBS coupled techniques for trace element detection are also discussed for various samples such as metal alloys, biomaterials, rare earth elements, explosives, drinking water, and water bodies.

Abstract:With the development of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), increasing numbers of researchers have begun to focus on problems of the application. We are not just satisfied with analyzing what kinds of elements are in the samples but are also eager to accomplish quantitative detection with LIBS. There are several means to improve the limit of detection and stability, which are important to quantitative detection, especially of trace elements, increasing the laser energy and the resolution of spectrometer, using dual pulse setup, vacuuming the ablation environment etc. All of these methods are about to update the hardware system, which is effective but expensive. So we establish the following spectrum data processing methods to improve the trace elements analysis in this paper: spectrum sifting, noise filtering, and peak fitting. There are small algorithms in these three method groups, which we will introduce in detail. Finally, we discuss how these methods affect the results of trace elements detection in an experiment to analyze the lead content in Chinese cabbage.

Abstract:In the field of quantitative analysis utilizing laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), ensuring the stability and precision of the technique is a crucial consideration. This is particularly pertinent for certain engineering applications, where utilizing electric translation stages for sample scanning is not feasible. In this study, a compact optical scanning LIBS analysis system was developed using a deflection mirror design to replace the translation platform. The system achieved rapid scanning and precise analysis, with a total weight of less than 5 kg. Moreover, to quantitatively analyze Mn, Ni, Cr, Cu, and other elements in various alloy steels, a general method for selecting spectral analysis line combination was proposed. The calibration model was established utilizing 16 alloy steel samples, and its validity was assessed through a verification set of seven samples (with element content ranging from 0.021 to 2.0 wt%). The results indicate a high degree of accuracy. The calibration model determination coefficients ( ) for Mn, Ni, Cr, and Cu elements exceeded 0.99. The root-mean-square error of validation (RMSEV) was less than 0.05, and the relative standard deviation (RSD) was not more than 4%. Additionally, the relative prediction errors for Mn range from 2.98% to 67.44%, for Ni range from 0.57% to 15.93%, for Cr range from 3.91% to 55.56%, and for Cu range from 0.95% to 38.1%.

Abstract:Poor spectral signal stability has always been a key problem limiting the development of laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The spatiotemporal inhomogeneity of the plasma between pulses is one of the direct causes of the poor stability of the spectral signal. In this paper, a multi-directional plasma emission light collection method is proposed and its performance is tested. The main idea is to suppress the difference caused by the spatial fluctuation of the plasma by increasing the acquisition range and size. Plasma emission spectra of 11 kinds of mixed lithium ore standard samples are collected with 7 different collection schemes. The experimental results show that the intensity and stability of Ca, Al, and Mn spectral lines collected from multiple directions significantly improved compared to the single lateral and single coaxial collection methods. The mean characteristic spectral intensities are increased by a factor of 4.41 and 6.84, respectively. Meanwhile, the mean relative standard deviation of multiple-directional (1.95%) is much smaller than that of the single lateral (4.31%) or single coaxial (4.16%). The mean coefficient of determination of the univariate linear regression is also improved from RL2 ̄=0.8722 (single lateral) and RC2 ̄=0.8849 (single coaxial) to RC+4L2 ̄=0.9351 (multiple-directional). The innovative and developed system based on LIBS and the multi-directional plasma collection method can effectively improve the detection repeatability and accuracy and has application values in sample measurement.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been regarded as a future superstar for chemical analysis for years due to its unique features such as little or no sample preparation, remote sensing, and fast and multi-element analysis. Chinese LIBS community is one of the most dynamically developing communities in the World. The aim of the work is to inspect what have been done in China for LIBS development and, based on the understanding of the overall status, to identify the challenges and opportunities for the future development. In this paper, the scientific contributions from Chinese LIBS community are reviewed for the following four aspects: fundamentals, instrumentation, data processing and modeling, and applications; and the driving force of LIBS development in China is analyzed, the critical issues for successful LIBS application are discussed, and in our opinion, the potential direction to improve the technology and to realize large scale commercialization in China is proposed.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a promising multi-elemental analysis technique and has the advantages of rapidness and minimal sample preparation. In traditional LIBS measurement, sample spectra are generally collected based on a single set of fixed experimental parameters, such as laser energy and delay time. When samples have the same main components and similar component concentrations, the difference in their spectral intensities becomes less obvious. This can lower the sensitivity of LIBS measurement and pose a threat to the accuracy and robustness of LIBS qualitative analysis. In this work, we propose a new method to increase the spectral difference between similar samples, namely multiple-setting spectra. For each sample, it adopts different sets of experimental parameters and obtains a group of spectra to increase the fingerprint spectral information. The effectiveness of the proposed method is theoretically verified and then tested on 11 similar coal samples. Specifically, the sample spectra were collected with different laser energy and delay time, and processed by principal component analysis (PCA) and Davies-Bouldin index (DBI). The results show that the use of multiple-settings spectra can significantly improve the sample discrimination accuracy from 81.8% to 96.4%. In addition, the proposed method can maintain the efficiency and cost of LIBS measurement.

Abstract:For monitoring the lubricant quality and engine wear status, indirect ablation laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was introduced to determine the metal elements in lubricating oil. Due to the different transmittance of oil to the laser wavelength, the effect of the laser wavelength on the detection performance of indirect ablation LIBS was studied. Under optimal parameters, the calibration curves were established for 10 metal elements with laser wavelengths of 1064, 532, and 355 nm. The obtained results show the average limit of determination (LoD) and the average relative standard deviation (ARSD) of spectral intensity for 1064, 532, and 355 nm is 15.972, 56.804, and 25.077; 2.874%, 9.253%, and 12.649%, respectively. In addition, the average R2, the average relative error (ARE), and the root mean square error of cross validation (RMSECV) for laser wavelength of 1064 nm are 0.991, 9.045%, and 18.379 mg/L, which is better than those of 532 nm and 355 nm. Therefore, the laser wavelength affects the quantitative analysis performance of indirect ablation LIBS for the analysis of metal elements in lubricating oil and the optimal wavelength is 1064 nm

Abstract:Laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is a spectral analysis technique characterized by the merits including rapidity, simple sample preparation, and spontaneous multi-element analysis, etc. In LIBS detection, the ambient gas plays an important role in interacting with the fast-expanding laser induced plasma (LIP) and greatly affects the LIBS signal. Therefore, it is important to investigate the effects of the ambient gas, especially the gas properties such as molecular weight, ionization energy, and thermal capacity, etc. on LIBS signals to better understand the interactions between the surrounding gas and the LIP, and improve the signal quality of LIBS. However, it is very hard to change only one property of the ambient gas while keeping the others unchanged because of the unavailability of such gases, thus in this study, a series of gas mixtures composed of He, Ne and Ar were utilized to obtain diverse properties necessary for the investigation, while titanium alloy is used as a sample. Results revealed that for some gas mixtures (such as 40% He, 40% Ne, and 20% Ar gas mixture), signal intensities were enhanced and relative standard deviation (RSD) values were significantly decreased. The plasma temperature T, electron density ne, and total number density ns were also calculated to analyze the mechanism of gas effect on LIBS signals. Results showed that the change of the gas species mainly has influences on the total number density ns, and further leads to the change of signals intensities and RSDs. The relation between some gas properties and LIBS signal was then discussed and the mechanism of some leading properties, such as the molecular weight, ionization energy, thermal conductivity, and viscosity were analyzed to explain how these properties work on LIBS signals.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is gaining popularity as a technique for solid sample characterization. The emission from a laser-induced plasma of several Al(1) and Zn(1) spectral lines had been studied to investigate the influence of the delay time, pulse energy, concentration of elements and the thickness of the film on the line intensity. The plasma was generated using a Q-switched Nd: YAG laser emitting a 10ns pulse at a wavelength of 1064 nm to irradiate the surface of an AlZnO film in air at atmospheric pressure. The plasma emission spectroscopy was detected with linear charge-coupled device (CCD) array through a bundle of seven optical fibres, each with a diameter of around 600 mu m. After calculating the temperature of excited plasma we found that it could be divided into two regions depending upon the pulse energy. Also, the intensity of the emission lines could be divided into two regions depending on the pulse energy. Finally, we investigated the effect of element concentration and the thickness of film on signal intensity.

Abstract:This paper reviews the state of art technology of laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). Research on LIBS is gaining momentum in the field of instrumentation and data analysis technique due to its wide application in various field particularly in environmental monitoring and in industry. The main focus is on its miniaturization for field application and on increasing its sensitivity. The sensitivity of LIBS has been increased by confining the laser produced plasma using external magnetic field as well as using two successive laser pulse excitation of plasma. LIBS has capability for simultaneous multi element determination, localized microanalysis, surface analysis and has been used successfully for determination and identification of hazardous explosive and biological samples. Experimental findings of LIBS study in different applications have been discussed.

Abstract:Classic 3 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase (3 beta HSD) deficiency congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) results from a mutation in the type II 3 beta HSD gene encoding adrenal and gonadal 3 beta HSD. We investigated the type II and type I 3 beta HSD gene sequences in 15 infants and children with premature pubarche (PP; mean/range of age at PP, 4/0.08-9 yr) and elevated ACTH-stimulated delta 5 precursor steroid levels. Compared to Tanner I control subjects of similar age, ACTH-stimulated hormonal levels were at 2.3-10.7 SD for 17-hydroxypregnenolone (delta 5-17P) in all PP subjects, at 2.2-17 SD for dehydroepi-androsterone (DHEA) and 2.4-5.6 SD for the delta 5-17P/cortisol (F) ratio in all PP subjects except 1 infant, and at 2.3-10 SD for the DHEA/ androstenedione (delta 5-A) ratio in 8 PP subjects. Compared to Tanner II normal children, the hormonal levels were at 3-8 SD for delta 5-17P in all 13 PP children, at 2.3-4.7 SD for the delta 5-17P/F ratio in 6 PP children, and at 2.3-6.5 SD for DHEA and 3.5-9 SD for the DHEA/delta 4-A ratio in 7 PP children. Type II 3 beta HSD gene sequences, including regions of a putative promoter, all exons (I, II, III, and IV), and exon-intron boundaries, were normal in all subjects. Sequences of the type I 3 beta HSD gene encoding extraadrenal and extragonadal 3 beta HSD were normal in the 6 patients tested. The ACTH-stimulated delta 5-17P levels and delta 5-17P/F ratios in the PP children without type II 3 beta HSD gene mutation were exceedingly lower than the respective reported hormonal data for children with 3 beta HSD deficiency CAH with proven type II 3 beta HSD gene mutation. The ACTH-stimulated DHEA levels and DHEA/delta 4-A ratios were not exceedingly different between the children with and without type II 3 beta HSD gene mutation. These findings suggest that the degree of ACTH-stimulated delta 5 precursor steroid abnormality, such as delta 5-17P levels up to 10 SD above the normal mean level found in our PP patients, is not caused by a mild variant of 3 beta HSD deficiency CAH resulting from type II or type I 3 beta HSD gene mutation. The hormonal criterion for ACTH-stimulated delta 5-17P levels in patients with mild variant 3 beta HSD deficiency, therefore, is predicted to be higher than 10 SD above the normal mean value.

Abstract:Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) is regarded as the future superstar for chemical analysis, but the relatively high measurement uncertainty and error remain the persistent challenges for its technological development as well as wide applications. In the present work, mechanisms of measurement uncertainty generation and basic principle of signal uncertainty and matrix effects impacting quantification performance were explained. Furthermore, methods for raw signal improvement including sample preparation, system optimization, and especially plasma modulation, which modulates the laser-induced plasma evolution process for higher signal repeatability and signal-to-noise ratio, were reviewed and discussed. Different LIBS mathematical quantification methods including calibration-free methods and calibration methods, which were classified into physical-principle based calibration model, data-driven based calibration model, and hybrid model, were discussed and compared. Overall, a framework of quantification improvement strategy including key steps and main way-out was summarized and recommended for LIBS future development.

Abstract:The laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) technique, due to its lack of pretreatment of the material and the speed of analysis, has shown a great potential for a wide range of industrial applications. The current situation of application and study of LIBS are reviewed. Meanwhile, the laser used to explode the Cr and Co film had a pulse duration of 10 ns, the highest single pulse energy was 50 mJ at a repetition rate of 20 Hz, and a wavelength of 1064 nm. When the excitation energy was less than 10 mJ, there was little difference in spectral signal excited by different energy for Cr film. Otherwise, the signal showed obvious change when excitation energy was higher than 10 mJ. The principle, characters, history and recent trend of LIBS were introduced systematically. The factors influencing LIBS performances, including the characteristic of laser, delay time, experiment setting, the kind and the pressure of surrounding. Gas, single or dual pulse, and the analysis method were analyzed.
Study on the Data Processing Method Applied to Improve Spectral Stability of Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy in Soil Analysis

Abstract:This paper studied the data process methods of Laser-Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) and proposed a spectral intensity correction method utilizing laser energy monitoring and plasma morphology imaging, combined with neural network algorithm to improve the spectral stability. We set up a LIBS system, which had a laser beam sampling module to monitor laser output energy and a CMOS camera imaging module to capture plasma flame outlines. A back propagation neural network (BPNN) model was designed for standardizing the spectrum to a lower relative standard deviation (RSD) of emission line intensities, in which training spectrum, sample energy and image parameters were inputs, and the average of all the training spectrums were outputs. This method was applied in both aluminum and soil LIBS tests, and got effective results in reducing spectral intensity fluctuations. This data processing method not only provided a practical access to acquire stable spectrum information for both qualitative and quantitative LIBS analysis but also showed a bright future of combining LIBS data processing with machine learning methods.

Abstract:In laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), a focused laser pulse is used to ablate material from a surface and form a laser plasma that excites the vaporized material. Geometric factors, such as the distance between the sample and the focusing lens and the method of collecting the plasma light, can greatly influence the analytical results. To obtain the best quantitative results, one must consider this geometry. Here we report the results of an investigation of the effect of sampling geometry on LIBS measurements. Diagnostics include time-resolved spectroscopy and temporally and spectrally resolved imaging using an acousto-optic tunable filter (AOTF). Parameters investigated include the type of lens (cylindrical or spherical) used to focus the laser pulse onto the sample, the focal length of the lens (75 or 150 mm), the lens-to-sample distance (LTSD), the angle-of-incidence of the laser pulse onto the sample, and the method used to collect the plasma light (lens or fiber-optic bundle). From these studies, it was found that atomic emission intensities, plasma temperature, and mass of ablated material depend strongly on the LTSD for both types of lenses. For laser pulse energies above the breakdown threshold for air, these quantities exhibit symmetric behavior about an LTSD approximately equal to the back focal length for cylindrical lenses and asymmetric behavior for spherical lenses. For pulse energies below the air breakdown threshold, results obtained for both lenses display symmetric behavior. Detection limits and measurement precision for the elements Be, Cr, Cu, Mn, Pb, and Sr, determined with the use of 14 certified reference soils and stream sediments, were found to be independent of the lens used. Time-resolved images of the laser plasma show that at times >5 μs after plasma formation a cloud of emitting atoms extends significantly beyond the centrally located, visibly white, intense plasma core present at early times (<0.3 μs). It was determined that, by collecting light from the edges of the emitting cloud, one can record spectra using an ungated detector (no time resolution) that resemble closely the spectra obtained from a gated detector providing time-resolved detection. This result has implications in the development of less expensive LIBS detection systems.
