Abstract:Organic solar cells (OSCs) have attracted wide research interests in the past decades. In recent years, our group mainly focused on the new photovoltaic materials design and device engineering technologies for highly efficient OSCs. This account mainly summarizes our recent studies on the structural design of wide bandgap (WBG) polymers and their morphology control as well as applications in OSCs. In order to further promote PCE, an efficient way is to narrow down optical band gap of the polymers. This review focuses on low band gap polymers based on DonorAcceptor (DA) strategy and quinoid form structure. At first, we introduce the requirements for polymers, such as tuning of energy levels. Second, we introduce the importance of main chain, side chain and substituents, which affect the optical and electrical properties, intra/intermolecular interactions, and charge mobility. We survey the important donor and acceptor units and discuss the guidelines for developing highly efficient conjugated polymers. We classify the polymers into several categories in accordance with the structures of acceptor units: Benzodiathiazole (BT), Thienopyrrolodione (TPD) and Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), to which the copolymers with various donors have promissing efficiency. Low band gap polymers based on the quinoid structure, thienothiophene (TT), having promising efficiency are also included.

Abstract:Within this review, the recent advances on the application of wide band‐gap insulating materials in perovskite solar cells, their types and preparation methods, as well as the related working mechanisms and existing problems are reviewed, with the aim of promoting the commercialization of perovskite solar cells. In recent years, the development of perovskite solar cells (PSCs) is advancing rapidly with their recorded photoelectric conversion efficiency reaching 25.8%. However, for the commercialization of PSCs, it is also necessary to solve their stability issue. In order to improve the device performance, various additives and interface modification strategies have been proposed. While, in many cases, they can guarantee a significant increase in efficiency, but not ensure improved stability. Therefore, materials that improve the device efficiency and stability simultaneously are urgently needed. Some wide band‐gap insulating materials with stable physical and chemical properties are promising alternative materials. In this review, the application of wide band‐gap insulating materials in PSCs, including their preparation methods, working roles, and mechanisms are described, which will promote the commercial application of PSCs.

Molecular Engineering Enhances the Charge Carriers Transport in Wide Band-Gap Polymer Donors Based Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:The novel and appropriate molecular design for polymer donors are playing an important role in realizing high-efficiency and high stable polymer solar cells (PSCs). In this work, four conjugated polymers (PIDT-O, PIDTT-O, PIDT-S and PIDTT-S) with indacenodithiophene (IDT) and indacenodithieno [3,2-b]thiophene (IDTT) as the donor units, and alkoxy-substituted benzoxadiazole and benzothiadiazole derivatives as the acceptor units have been designed and synthesized. Taking advantages of the molecular engineering on polymer backbones, these four polymers showed differently photophysical and photovoltaic properties. They exhibited wide optical bandgaps of 1.88, 1.87, 1.89 and 1.91 eV and quite impressive hole mobilities of 6.01 × 10−4, 7.72 × 10−4, 1.83 × 10−3, and 1.29 × 10−3 cm2 V−1 s−1 for PIDT-O, PIDTT-O, PIDT-S and PIDTT-S, respectively. Through the photovoltaic test via using PIDT-O, PIDTT-O, PIDT-S and PIDTT-S as donor materials and [6,6]-phenyl-C-71-butyric acid methyl ester (PC71BM) as acceptor materials, all the PSCs presented the high open circuit voltages (Vocs) over 0.85 V, whereas the PIDT-S and PIDTT-S based devices showed higher power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 5.09% and 4.43%, respectively. Interestingly, the solvent vapor annealing (SVA) treatment on active layers could improve the fill factors (FFs) extensively for these four polymers. For PIDT-S and PIDTT-S, the SVA process improved the FFs exceeding 71%, and ultimately the PCEs were increased to 6.05%, and 6.12%, respectively. Therefore, this kind of wide band-gap polymers are potentially candidates as efficient electron-donating materials for constructing high-performance PSCs.

Abstract:A new weak electron‐deficient building block, bis(2‐ethylhexyl) 2,5‐bis(5‐bromothiophen‐2‐yl) thieno[3,2‐ b ]thiophene‐3,6‐dicarboxylate ( TT‐Th ), is incorporated to construct a wide‐bandgap (1.88 eV) polymer PBDT‐TT for nonfullerene polymer solar cells (NF‐PSCs). PBDT‐TT possesses suitable energy levels and complementary absorption when blended with both ITIC analogues ( ITIC and IT‐M ) and a near‐infrared (NIR) acceptor ( 6TIC ). Moreover, PBDT‐TT exhibits good conjugated planarity and preferable face‐on orientation in the blended thin film, which are beneficial for charge transfer and carrier transport. The PSCs based on PBDT‐TT : IT‐M and PBDT‐TT : 6TIC blend films yield high power conversion efficiencies of 11.38% and 11.03%, respectively. To the best of the authors' knowledge, the PCE of 11.03% for PBDT‐TT : 6TIC‐ based device is one of the highest values reported for NIR NF‐PSCs. This work demonstrates that TT‐Th is a useful new electron‐accepting building block for making p‐type wide bandgap polymers for efficient NIR NF‐PSCs.
Design and Synthesis of Wide-bandgap Conjugated Polymers Based on 3,4-Dicyanothiophene for Efficient Organic Solar Cells

Abstract:In this contribution, we report a set of wide bandgap conjugated polymers (PB3TCN-C32, PB3TCN-C36, PB3TCN-C36-R, PB3TCN-C40) based on 3,4-dicyanothiophene (DCT) for use as electron donors in organic solar cells (OSCs). The polymers exhibit wide optical bandgaps (> 1.8 eV) and deep highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) levels due to the high electron affinity of DCT unit. The optoelectronic properties, active layer morphology, and device performance of the polymers can be tuned by side chains. As a result, high-performance solar cells with a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 11.2% have been achieved by PB3TCN-C40 when using IT-4F as the electron acceptor. Noticeably, the polymers afforded a high open circuit voltage (V-oc) of up to 0.92 V and an energy loss (E-loss) as low as 0.6 eV even though there is not any additional withdrawing groups such as F, Cl, or S atom on the polymers, which is superior to the leading polymer donors in the field of OSCs. These results suggest that the DCT unit hold big room for further increasing V-oc and decreasing E-loss of OSCs via rational polymer design, which is desirable for application in tandem devices and in-door photovoltaics. Overall, this work demonstrated that DCT is a promising building block for constructing wide bandgap conjugated polymer with deep HOMO level for highly efficient OSCs.
A Narrow‐Bandgap n‐Type Polymer with an Acceptor–Acceptor Backbone Enabling Efficient All‐Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:Narrow‐bandgap polymer semiconductors are essential for advancing the development of organic solar cells. Here, a new narrow‐bandgap polymer acceptor L14, featuring an acceptor–acceptor (A–A) type backbone, is synthesized by copolymerizing a dibrominated fused‐ring electron acceptor (FREA) with distannylated bithiophene imide. Combining the advantages of both the FREA and the A–A polymer, L14 not only shows a narrow bandgap and high absorption coefficient, but also low‐lying frontier molecular orbital (FMO) levels. Such FMO levels yield improved electron transfer character, but unexpectedly, without sacrificing open‐circuit voltage (Voc), which is attributed to a small nonradiative recombination loss (Eloss,nr) of 0.22 eV. Benefiting from the improved photocurrent along with the high fill factor and Voc, an excellent efficiency of 14.3% is achieved, which is among the highest values for all‐polymer solar cells (all‐PSCs). The results demonstrate the superiority of narrow‐bandgap A–A type polymers for improving all‐PSC performance and pave a way toward developing high‐performance polymer acceptors for all‐PSCs.

Abstract:Perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells have garnered considerable interest due to their potential to surpass the Shockley-Queisser limit of single-junction Si solar cells. The rapidly advanced efficiencies of perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells benefit from the significant improvements in perovskite technology. Beginning with the evolution of wide bandgap perovskite cells towards two-terminal (2T) perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, this work concentrates on component engineering, additives, and interface modification of wide bandgap perovskite cells. Furthermore, the advancements in 2T perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells are presented, and the influence of the central interconnect layer and the Si cell on the progression of the tandem solar cells is emphasized. Finally, we discuss the challenges and obstacles associated with 2T perovskite/silicon tandem solar cells, conducting a thorough analysis and providing a prospect for their future.
Diketo-Pyrrolo-Pyrrole-Based Medium Band Gap Copolymers for Efficient Plastic Solar Cells: Morphology, Transport, and Composition-Dependent Photovoltaic Behavior

Abstract:Two diketo-pyrrolo-pyrrole-based donor-acceptor copolymers, PCPDT-PDPP and PDTP-PDPP, were synthesized and applied as p-type component for bulk heterojunction solar cells. Using a facile molecular engineering of the main chain linking bridge, we have successfully tuned the band gap of the materials from low to medium level, which results in an improved balance between the device open circuit voltage and short circuit current. The power conversion efficiencies of the polymer/PC70BM combinations achieve 2.03% (PCPDT-PDPP) and 1.32% (PDTP-PDPP) without any interface engineering or post-treatment. A totally different composition-dependent photovoltaic behavior was also discovered for each of the two materials, although they share similar donor acceptor (D-A) structure. Morphological and photophysical studies reveal a phase structure dominated, light harvesting subordinated mechanism, in Which some nonkernel molecular level factors, such as the branch chain density and the molecular weight, are found to play important roles.
Regulating Intramolecular Charge Transfer and Resonance Effects to Realize Ultrawide Bandgap Conjugated Polymer for High‐Performance All‐Polymer Solar Cells

Abstract:By rationally suppressing intermolecular charge transfer and quinoid resonance in donor–acceptor conjugated polymers, a novel polymer donor PBPD is successfully reported, featuring with strong absorptivity and ultrawide bandgap of 2.24 eV. The amplified utilization of high‐energy photons enables over 17% efficiency in PBPD‐contained all‐polymer solar cell (APSC), which is the first report of APSCs based on ultrawide bandgap polymers. All‐polymer solar cells (APSCs) have attracted increasing attention due to the superior stability and mechanical flexibility. However, power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of APSCs fall behind ascribed to limited efficient polymer donors (PDs). Particularly, there are rare reports of high‐performance PDs with ultrawide bandgaps, which are indispensable to maximally harvest high‐energy photons for better light utilization. Herein, the significance of intramolecular charge transfer and quinoid resonance effects in regulating bandgaps of donor‐acceptor conjugated materials is highlighted, and a novel polymer donor PBPD based on phenyl/pyridyl fused phenanthridine (PD) moiety is reported. Consequently, PBPD receives an ultrawide optical bandgap up to 2.24 eV and strong absorptivity at 487–523 nm, which exactly follows the strongest radiation of solar spectrum. The amplified light utilization of high‐energy photons endows PBPD:PY‐IT based APSCs with high power conversion efficiency of 15.29%, which ranks the best among APSCs with ultrawide bandgap PDs and challenges typical PDs with bandgaps of ≈1.80 eV. Thanks to the unique light responses and molecular orientations of PBPD, the PBPD‐contained ternary APSCs receive further optimized photon utilization and refined PCEs over 17%. This study sheds light on the design principles of ultrawide bandgap polymers and demonstrates the great promise of large bandgap PDs for efficient APSCs.

Abstract:The alternating diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-Quinoxaline (Qx) based conjugated polymers are synthesized and investigated as electron donors for polymer solar cells (PSCs). Through the substitution of phenyl in Qx unit at para (p) and meta (m) positions with methoxy group, the resultant DPP-pMQx and DPP-mMQx polymers possess narrow optical band gap (1.32 and 1.26 eV) with relatively low-lying highest occupied molecular orbitals. The obtained photovoltaic devices indicate that the combination of DPP with weak acceptor Qx is helpful to develop narrow bandgap polymers with near-infrared photo response and low energy loss (0.58 eV for DPP-mMQx) in PSC devices. Abstract:In the past few years, the power conversion efficiency (PCE) of organic solar cells (OSCs) has improved rapidly with the milestone value exceeding 18%, primarily owing to the development of novel non-fullerene acceptors (NFAs) as well as matching polymer donors. The molecular structure of a polymer donor fundamentally determines its molecular packing (crystal structure and morphology) and optoelectronic properties, which influence the photovoltaic processes and the ultimate PCE of the OSC device. The structure-property-cell performance relationships of polymer donors with respect to the specific acceptor are very complex, involving numerous parameters, but are extremely important towards the development of high-performance polymer donors to achieve high PCE. This review provides a timely analysis of the top-performing wide bandgap (WBG) polymer donors that have been developed to match the three most representative narrow bandgap NFAs, ITIC, IT-4F, and Y6, in terms of their structural design, fine-tuning of their optoelectronic properties, and control of the morphology and crystallinity of their blends with NFAs. We hope that this article provides deeper insight into the structure-property-cell performance relationships of polymer donors and a collection of useful guidelines and strategies for the design and processing of novel polymer donors for matching with NFAs for achieving ultrahigh performance OSCs.

Abstract:Along with the development of narrow bandgap A‐D‐A and ADA'D‐A type small molecule acceptors (SMAs), polymer solar cells (PSCs) have witnessed a striking progress, with an impressing power conversion efficiency (PCE) approaching 20% recently. Aiming to realize the future commercial application of organic photovoltaic (OPV) technology, developing more efficient organic conjugated materials is urgently needed. Benefiting from the specific advantages in precisely adjusting the optoelectronic materials, random copolymerization strategy has drawn great attention during the past several years, and has played a vital role in the development of PSCs. In this review, the functions of random copolymerization strategy in modulating the polymer properties are briefly discussed. Then we comprehensively review the recent research progress of random copolymerization strategy of polymer photovoltaic materials in PSCs. Abstract:Rational design and synthesis of low bandgap (LBG) polymers with judiciously tailored HOMO and LUMO levels have emerged as a viable route to high performance polymer solar cells with power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) exceeding 10%. In addition to engineering the energy-level of LBG polymers, the photovoltaic performance of LBG polymer-based solar cells also relies on the device architecture, in particular the fine morphology of the photoactive layer. The nanoscale interpenetrating networks composed of nanostructured donor and acceptor phases are the key to providing a large donor-acceptor interfacial area for maximizing the exciton dissociation and offering a continuous pathway for charge transport. In this Review Article, we summarize recent strategies for tuning the molecular organization and nanoscale morphology toward an enhanced photovoltaic performance of LBG polymer-based solar cells.

Abstract:Two wide bandgap conjugated polymers (PTCO8 and PTCO1) with different side chains, composed of alkylcarbonyl-substituted thiophene (TOC) as the electron-withdrawing unit and two-dimension benzodithiophene (BDT) as the electron-donating unit, are developed for non-fullerene polymer solar cells (PSCs). Relative to non-carbonyl-substituted control polymer PTC8, PTCO8 and PTCO1 exhibit a red-shifted absorption and deeper-lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level. When blended with ITIC, the as-cast PTCO1-based devices yield a power conversion efficiency of up to 9.33% with an open-circuit voltage of 0.95 V, a short-circuit current density of 16.91 mA cm-2, and a fill factor of 57.9%, outperforming those of PTC8-based devices (4.04%) and PTCO8-based devices (5.91%). This work demonstrates that the carbonyl group is a promising electron-deficient moiety to construct wide-bandgap polymers for non-fullerene PSCs. Adjusting the length of side chains is a feasible strategy to improve PSC performance further.
