Abstract:The difficulties in the construction of Pingtan strait hi-rail bridge come from its large scale, long life cycle, diverse ocean environment with deep water, strong wind, exposed granite and heavy sea water corrosion. In view of the different geological conditions and water depth, detailed classification of trestle bridge is employed and researches and analyses are conducted to define design parameters so as to provide references for the design of the substructure of such trestle bridges in similar water areas.

Abstract:Owing to the harsh natural conditions and complex geology at the site of the Pingtan Straits Rail‐cum‐Road Bridge ,the foundations of the bridge were decided to be constructed by the scheme of the construction platforms by the aid of the long trestle so that the construction of the foundations over the sea could be shifted onto the trestle and platforms .In regard of the design dif‐ficulties of the trestle ,the load combination and design principles for the trestle were formulated and the structure of the trestle was hence designed according to the different water depth and geo‐logical conditions .The trestle is totally 7 .49 km long and 8 .5 m wide .In the area of the water depth ≤35 m ,the foundations of the trestle are the steel pipe piles w hile in the area of the 35 m<water depth≤45 m ,the foundations are the structures of the "jackets+ support piles".For the trestle over the area of the water depth ≤18 m ,the span arrangement of the trestle is 9 m+15 m , the superstructure of the part of the trestle is the Bailey truss and the diameters of the steel pipe pipes are 1 .2 m .For the trestle over the area of the water depth >18 m ,the span arrangement of the trestle is 12 m+32 (28) m or 12 m+36 m .The superstructure of the part of the trestle is the T russ No .1 used for the permanent bridge and the diameters of the steel pipe pipes are 1 .5 ,2 and 2 .4 m .To provide solution to the durability of the trestle in the marine environment ,the corrosion protection of the combined sacrificial protection layers of the steel pipe pile walls and the exterior coating of the piles was designed .
Analysis and control of ground settlement of embankments in construction of cross-river shield tunnels

Abstract:Slurry shield has been widely used in construction of cross-river tunnels.One big challenge is how to traverse the embankment without impacting its regular service and safety.Based on the field settlement monitoring data in construction of Hangzhou Qingchun Road cross-river tunnel,ground settlements induced by shield tunneling under greenfield and the embankment are compared.The results show that the settlements of the embankment are larger,for which for the shielding disturbance to the surrounding soils,the complexity of the embankment structure,the vehicle travelling on the embankment and sustained rainfall are accounted.Peck equation's applicability to predict the ground settlements due to shield tunneling in Hangzhou is evaluated,and the values of the ground trough-width parameter and the volume loss in this project are suggested.By combining the successful experience of crossing the embankment in this tunnel,some practical and effective measures are suggested for slurry shield to traverse the embankment.These results will provide a scientific reference for the design and construction of similar shield tunnels in practice.

Abstract:Pingtan Strait combined highway and railway bridge is the first cross-sea hi/rail bridge in China.In the sea area where the bridge is located with strong wind,high waves,deep water,rip current and apparent tides.In addition,the rock surface inclination fluctuates greatly,exposed rock/hard rock spreads extensively,meteorological,hydrological and geological conditions are all very complicated,especially in the sea area where the bridge is located with huge wave-current force,and all these make the design and construction of the bridge substructure unexpectedly difficult.In order to solve the wind/wave action and ship impacting force action when navigation is proceeding,multi-innovative technologies are adopted during foundation design and construction of three large-span navigable cable-stayed bridges,and drilled piles of 4.5 m diameter are used for the first time.Type KTY 5000 power head drilling machine and relevant pile-driving equipment are studied and developed to solve the problems in drilled piles construction in complicated sea areas.Construction platforms supported by jackets frames are built in some deep water exposed rock areas to overcome the wave force action.In order to adapt to the unique environment in the bridge location,dumb-bell type high pile caps are used on the main tower pier caps of the three large-span cable-stayed bridges to allow the cap top above high tide level.During cap construction,the main body anti-collision structure is integrated with construction cofferdam and the permanent structure is combined with the temporary structure,which not only save materials,but also reduce construction safety risks.The large scale collision protection box cofferdam is manufactured completely in plant and handled wholly to fulfill modular and standardized construction.Innovative technology of concreting without bottom cover is applied in dumb-bell type cap beam construction.
Experimental study on the bored pile construction's influence on the safety of existing bridge

Abstract:Both the foundations of the under-construction Qianjiang New Rail-Bridge and the existing Qianjiang Second Bridge are bored pile foundation.As they are close to each other(about 10m),the foundation of the Qianjiang Second Bridge may be disturbed by the bored pile's construction of the new rail-bridge.Moreover,it may result in the horizontal and vertical movements of the existing bridge.The project team has monitoring on lateral movement,earth pressure,pore water pressure and layered settlement of the soil around the under-construction bored pile through laying the gradient tubes,inclinometers,earth pressure cells,pore water pressure gauges and telescoping tube settlement gauges.It is found that the soil lateral movements caused by the construction of the new bridge's bored pile are mainly within the limit of five times bored pile diameters and maximum settlements are merely 5mm,and the construction of the new bridge's bored pile has little effect on the earth pressure and pore water pressure of surrounding soils.Therefore,the construction of the new bridge's bored pile has little influence on the safety of the Qianjiang Second Bridge.
Behaviors of alluvial silt foundation pits along Qiantang River

Abstract:The hydrological and geological conditions of Qiantang River estuary are very complicated.The foundation pits along it are threatened by floods and strong tides.Based on the intensive investigations of projects,seawalls and typical geological cross sections of Hangzhou reach of Qiangtang River are selected to conduct numerical studies on the effects of high tidal level and design flood level of Qiangtang River,distance of pit from the river,reinforcement of the pit bottom,excavation depth and insertion depth of enclosure walls on the bebaviors of the alluvial silt foundation pits.The results reveal that(1) the silt pits along the river undergo large deformations under the effects of water levels,(2) the improvement by the reinforcement of pit bottoms is noticeable,(3) the seepage at the bottom of the enclosure structures for the silt pits is fast and the flows are concentrated,thus measures should be taken to lower the water head differences between the inside and the outside of the pits,and when cut-off walls leak,emergency countermeasures should be taken.The numerical results offer references for engineering design.

Abstract:The Qiantang River has high water level because of the tidewater.It is difficult question for foundation pit how to guarantee slope safety and construction convenience on the condition of high water level.The dewafering design and monitoring methods of building foundation pit nearby the Qiantang River are carried out according to the engineering case.The effects of foundation pit dewafering.The results show the foundation pit dewafering is effective by means of deep well for the soil layers of large permeability coefficient.When the water level of the Qiantang River is high,it is necessary to lower the high water lever by use of cut-off well.

Abstract:Based on the deep foundation pit project of the TOD (Transit-Oriented Development) complex of the Shaoxing North High-speed Railway Station, the influence of different construction stages on the deformation and inclination rate of the adjacent elevated bridge and its variation law are studied through field measurement and numerical simulation. The construction process is optimized by the method of reinforcement outside the pit and adjustment of preloaded axial force, and the influence of distance on elevated bridges is summarized. The results show that with the excavation of the foundation pit, the deformation of the bridge pier and bridge pile foundation gradually increases, and the deformation of the bridge piers is larger than that of the bridge pile foundations. As the depth of soil reinforcement outside the pit and the preloaded axial force increases, the maximum vertical displacement of the bridge pier and bridge pile foundations gradually decreases. The deeper the depth of soil reinforcement, the better the displacement control effect on the elevated bridge. In actual construction, it is recommended that the depth of reinforcement be taken as the excavation depth of the pit. It is obvious that the preloaded axial force is subject to the pit angle effect, and the appropriate value of the preloaded axial force should be selected according to the site conditions. The deformation of the bridge pier and bridge pile foundation generally shows a decreasing trend with the increase in the distance between the elevated bridge and the foundation pit. When the elevated bridge is close to the foundation pit, it will be affected by the pit angle effect, and the fluctuation will decrease. The conclusions drawn in the article can serve as the basis and reference for design and construction, and provide reference for similar projects.

Abstract:It is common to have a foundation pit accident, when failing to deal with the effect of confined water. In order to avoid such accidents, the Jiangnan launching shaft of Qingchun Road River-Crossing Tunnel in Hangzhou was investigated. According to the analysis of on-site monitoring data of wall deflection, settlement, and strut load, some conclusion can be drawn. Firstly, the wall deflection is closely related to the plane size of the foundation pit, and through strengthening the stiffness of the central support, the wall deflection can be greatly controlled. Secondly, the maximum settlement point is 0.5 times depth of the excavation away from retaining wall. Finally, load in the first level strut gradually decreased during the construction, and even can turn to be tensile force.

Abstract:The ancient Qiantang River seawall, built in Ming and Qing dynasties, is an important barrier in defending the estuary area of Qiantang River against floods and tides. To prevent strong hydrodynamic loads scouring the foundation and lowering the stability of the seawall, the apron structure is built at the front of the ancient seawall. The apron in the Haining region is mostly built by laying unbonded strip stones. To investigate the failure mechanism of such apron, wave and flow flume model tests are performed. It is shown that such apron is vulnerable to the impact by strong tidal bores where the covering stones are missing. The soil under the apron is vulnerable to the erosion by ebb tide seepage and longitudinal current, which leads to the sinking of the apron. As a cover layer, the apron has a good performance in protecting the soil, and can prevent the soil from instantaneous and residual liquefaction.

Abstract:The construction of sea-crossing channels has become an important part of the transportation infrastructure construction, and is developing in the direction of a larger span, deeper foundation and more complex system. Compared with traditional bridges, the sea-crossing bridges are facing the challenges of structural durability, wind resistance, complex environment and construction difficulties. In order to deal with the various challenges encountered in the design, construction and operation of the sea crossing channels, this paper puts forward the scheme combining immersed tunnel with submerged floating tunnel for crossing the Dongwuyang water area in Fujian Province, China after considering the topographic, geological and hydrological conditions. The cross section of SFT tube, arrangement of cables and the type of foundation were preliminary designed. The tube deformation, stress and cable force of the submerged floating tunnel under different load combinations were also analyzed by Midas/Civil. The global dynamic response analysis of the SFT structure under the wave and current load was carried out by ABAQUS. The static stress distribution of the SFT concrete tube was analyzed by the 3D finite element model. The results show that under the action of environment and service loads, the design indexes such as internal force, deformation and acceleration of the SFT tube meet the requirements of the design code, which indicates the SFT scheme is feasible, and it has good advantage for the deep-water construction environment.

Abstract:The pile foundation cutting and underpinning process during shield tunnelling significantly impacts the stability of bridge substructures. In this paper, the shield tunnel area from Hongguzhong Avenue Station to Yangming Park Station of Nanchang Metro Line 2 was taken as the research subject, which crosses the pile foundation underpinning project of the south approach section of Bayi Bridge. Through numerical simulation and on-site monitoring analysis, the influence of the active underpinning process of shield tunnelling pile foundation on the deformation of bridge substructure was studied. First, through analyzing on-site conditions and comparing technical solutions, an active gantry bridge pile foundation underpinning technology was proposed, and the specific construction steps were determined. On this basis, for the C15 pile foundation with the most complex working conditions, ABAQUS software was applied to simulate the jack-up, unloading and pile-cutting process during the pile foundation underpinning construction, and the displacement development of the bridge pier, underpinning beam and new pile during the whole construction process were analyzed. Finally, through on-site monitoring data analysis, the technology’s feasibility and safety were further verified. At the same time, according to the analysis of the monitoring results of the bridge piers, underpinning beams and new piles, the results from the finite element software were nearly the same as the trend shown by the monitoring results, and the displacement of the main structures of the lower part of the bridge was small and within the control range. The above research work verified the applicability of the active gantry type bridge pile foundation underpinning technology in the pile foundation underpinning condition of the single-column single-pile bridge in the narrow space curved bridge section, and is worthy of further promotion and application.

Abstract:An experimental study of the tidal bore impact on an innovatively-developed Sheet-Pile Groin (SPG) was conducted in a circulating flume. The water levels, tidal bore propagation velocity, temporal and spatial pressure distributions on a SPG were measured and analyzed. Then the pressure difference between the front and rear of the SPG piles was predicted and analyzed by FLOW 3D under various SPG perviousness ratio. The tidal bore height was a good index of the tidal bore strength and a good linear relationship was observed between the initial Froude number and the relative tidal bore height. The maximum rise of the water level at the SPG could reach 2.5 times the tidal bore height. The tidal bore pressure on the SPG can be reduced significantly by increasing the SPG perviousness ratio, especially when the tidal bore is high. The pressure difference between the front and rear of the pile distribute as an inverted trapezoid along the pile depth and can be significantly reduced with the increase of SPG perviousness ratio. These findings can provide guidelines for the design of the newly-developed SPG in tidal bore zone.
FIELD SURVEY OF COMPOSITE FOUNDATION WITH RIGID PILES UNDER EMBANKMENT

Abstract:When a highway is built on soft clay,vehicles will bounce when they run through a bridge approach because of large settlement difference between a bridge and embankment. Jialichen Bridge uses a composite foundation of rigid piles with different length along embankment to reduce the settlement difference. Embankment weight is a kind of flexible load and prototype observation analysis is reasonable way to study composite foundation under embankment. The prototype observation shows that because settlement of soil is larger than that of piles,an arch effect appears in the embankment so that its weight is gradually transferred from the soil to piles and pile-soil stress ratio increases. Due to the composite foundation,two-thirds of natural foundation settlement is removed. It is more significant that the road surface is basically smooth because of the piles with different length along the embankment. The observation of settlement in different depth shows that larger deformation is developed in the layers nearby the stabilized layer bottom.
Design and Analysis of Retaining System of Foundation Pit of Qingchun Road River-Crossing Tunnel in Hangzhou

Abstract:The Qingchun Road River-Crossing Tunnel in Hangzhou is the first tunnel that crosses beneath the famous Qiantang River.The pits at both the north and south sides are typically silt-based ones.The scale of the pits is very large and is the deepest pit in Hangzhou.In the pit at the north side,the retaining structures of SMW method plus steel support are mainly applied,among which the longest piles are up to 27 m.In the pit at the south side,the maximum excavation depth is 30 m,and the retaining structures of open cut plus underground diaphragm wall,open cut plus SMW method and steel support,open cut plus foundation reinforcement and open cut plus anchors-gunite-web shoring are used.It is the first time for the excavation to encounter the impact of high-pressure water in Hangzhou.The precipitation of tube wells supported by light wells and waterproof curtain walls successfully resolves the potential hazards posed by high-pressure water.According to the analysis of monitoring data of horizontal displacements,axial forces,surface settlements and water levels,some useful variations of the parameters are obtained,and they can be used as references for the design and construction of similar projects.
Study of Shallow Unloading Mechanism and Stability of Foundation Interface of Super High Arch Dam

Abstract:Along with the vigorous development of hydropower resources, many super high arch dams are constructing in Southwest region of China. The stability of these arch dams is a key and important problem in the process of design and construction. As for those arch dams constructed in high ground stress valley, foundation excavation may lead to geostress release and unloading of rock mass, and then causes shallow stability problem, which has few successful example for us to learn how to design and reinforce foundation for super high arch dam under these geo-condition. To this problem, unsuitable concept may bring about wrong calculation or numerical simulation, and then lead error to occur during design process. A detailed discussion is conducted focusing on the characters and mechanism of shallow unloading of excavated foundation surface of super high arch dam. Based on the Xiaowan Arch Dam, the calculation method of unbalance force of abutment and surface factor of safety of dam interface are proposed. By employing maximum-minimum principle, the stability of foundation interface of Xiaowan Arch Dam was analyzed and evaluated for supervising the design. The analysis results show that the proposed method is effective to supervise design for those super high arch dams similar to Xiaowan Arch Dam.

Abstract:Abstract In view of the navigation problem of Dongbei Waterway in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, the evolution of riverbed and the characteristics of the obstacles are analyzed. The engineering layout scheme is determined by various methods such as model test. In the design of engineering structure, the geological conditions of the project area are analyzed through geological exploration. The applicable engineering structure form is determining, the advanced and mature bank protection and beach protection structure is adopted in the regulation of the Yangtze River channel, and the optimized structural design is adopted to strengthen the stability of project and deal with problems such as geology and strong erosion. The environmental design material and the green structure type are adopted in the structural design to meet the ecological benefits of the project, which can provide reference for the engineering design of similar channel improvement project.

Abstract:In this paper, the typical deterioration of Northern Approach of Binzhou Yellow River Bridge is reviewed and the method of strengthening is proposed. Based on the theory of grillage method, T-beam grillage is modeled using finite element analysis software Midas civil to study the dynamic behavior of North approach’s superstructure after strengthening. Concerns about integrity of the carrying capacity and overall safety of the bridge are raised. Load simulation tests were performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the method and investigate its effect on structural behavior. And the results indicated that the bridge after strengthening could meet the demanding of intensity and rigidity.

Abstract:Xiluodu arch dam of Xiluodu hydro-junction standing on Jinshajiang River is one of international super-hydropower-projects. Furthermore, this super arch dam lies in peculiarly complicated geographical location where the most dangerous geologies of Southern-western China live. So, the dam foundation condition must meet rigorous requirements on geological stability, mechanical-physical characters and permeability etc. Thereby, the key scientific objects include attitude of foundation surfaces, geological defects of main strata, blasting-excavation-substitution systematic construction for soft geo-layers. Based on practical survey on strata’s lithologic characters and geological structural traits from bank slopes as well as valley bed, researched comprehensively were the dam foundation weathering and unloading condition, the distribution of intra- and inter-formational disturbed belts, compressive belts and parental fissures. Particularly, discussed attentively was their quality assessment. The analyses results showed that the globally initial quality of dam foundation was super one and the local geological defects can be reinforced reliably by substitutive excavation in addition to intense consolidation grouting so as to meet constructive requirements of Xiluodu arch dam. The conclusion is the sophisticated process for blasting construction and comprehensively constructive management system is applicable. The blasting excavation produced smooth and completely split surfaces. The exposed strata’s blasting damage was controlled effectively. The geo-strata’s treatment met generally constructive safety requirements.
Riverbed deformation and its response to human intervention on the lower reaches of the Yangtze River

Abstract:The operation of the world's largest hydropower dam, the Three Gorges Dam (TGD), has significantly influenced the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River (YR). However, research has not been conducted on the impact of local engineering projects on the evolution of the tidal channel of the YR. This study used historical water depth and level data to analyze the factors influencing riverbed deformation in the Nanjing reach of the tidal channel of the YR. Moreover, the effect of local engineering projects on riverbed deformation in the study area was quantitatively analyzed. Our results indicated that between 1998 and 2013, ~78.26 × 106 m3 of sediment accumulated in the study area. The goose‐head bifurcated section of this reach exhibited the most significant change in riverbed deformation during this period. Between 1998 and 2013, 46.97 × 106 m3 of sediment accumulated in this section, the riverbed elevation increased by 1.01 m, and the thalweg increased by 2.78 m. Quantitative analysis of the volume of sediment accumulated in the near‐bank area indicated that revetment engineering accounted for >40% of the accumulation. The results of this study provide a more accurate understanding of channel deformation in the lower reaches of the YR. Moreover, the results will improve the prediction accuracy of river channel evolution and assist in channel regulation and future local engineering construction projects.
