Abstract:Constructing and regulating the metal-supportinteraction by thesurface defects of support have emerged as a promising approach tooptimizing the catalytic performance on hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN)-supportedmetal catalysts. Here, we report highly dispersed and stable nickelnanoparticles derived from the strongly interacted surface nickelborate species with nitrogen-vacancy-rich h-BN (mBN) support for promotingCO methanation catalysis. Experimental and characterization resultsreveal that the strong interaction between mBN support and Ni speciesoriginates from the in situ generated amorphous surfacenickel borate species during the air calcination process. These surfacenickel borate species are reduced to highly dispersed Ni nanoparticleswith partial coverage of BO x species. After the in situ removal of BO x species at the surface of Ni nanoparticles during the inductionperiod, also evidenced by the in situ water vaporpretreatment of the Ni/mBN experiment, the CO conversion increasesfrom 37 to 96% and maintained stable for 100 h in the CO methanationover the as-prepared Ni/mBN catalyst. The strategy of in situ architecting surface metal borate intermediates on the supportscould provide an important toolkit in the design of dispersed andstable supported metal catalysts.
