Abstract:The papers in this special issue present a selection of high quality research papers on wearable and flexible integrated sensors for screening, diagnostics, and treatment. Emerging flexible and wearable physical sensing devices create huge potential for many vital healthcare and biomedical applications including artificial electronic skins, physiological monitoring and assessment systems, therapeutic and drug delivery platforms, etc. Monitoring of vital physiological parameters in hospital and/or home environments has been of tremendous interests to healthcare practitioners for a long time. Robust and reliable sensors with excellent flexibility and stretchability are essential in the development of pervasive health monitoring systems with the capability of continuously tracking physiological signals of human body without conspicuous discomfort and invasiveness.

Abstract:In modern society, technology associated with smart sensors made from flexible materials is rapidly evolving. As a core component in the field of wearable smart devices (or 'smart wearables'), flexible sensors have the advantages of excellent flexibility, ductility, free folding properties, and more. When choosing materials for the development of sensors, reduced weight, elasticity, and wearer's convenience are considered as advantages, and are suitable for electronic skin, monitoring of health-related issues, biomedicine, human–computer interactions, and other fields of biotechnology. The idea behind wearable sensory devices is to enable their easy integration into everyday life. This review discusses the concepts of sensory mechanism, detected object, and contact form of flexible sensors, and expounds the preparation materials and their applicability. This is with the purpose of providing a reference for the further development of flexible sensors suitable for wearable devices.

Abstract:Skin‐inspired wearable devices hold great potentials in the next generation of smart portable electronics owing to their intriguing applications in healthcare monitoring, soft robotics, artificial intelligence, and human–machine interfaces. Despite tremendous research efforts dedicated to judiciously tailoring wearable devices in terms of their thickness, portability, flexibility, bendability as well as stretchability, the emerging Internet of Things demand the skin‐interfaced flexible systems to be endowed with additional functionalities with the capability of mimicking skin‐like perception and beyond. This review covers and highlights the latest advances of burgeoning multifunctional wearable electronics, primarily including versatile multimodal sensor systems, self‐healing material‐based devices, and self‐powered flexible sensors. To render the penetration of human‐interactive devices into global markets and households, economical manufacturing techniques are crucial to achieve large‐scale flexible systems with high‐throughput capability. The booming innovations in this research field will push the scientific community forward and benefit human beings in the near future.

Abstract:Wearable sensors can fit human skin or integrate with textiles to monitor the physiological environment of human body with high sensitivity and integration. In recent years, wearable sensors have been widely used in monitoring sweat, breathing, heart rate and blood oxygen and other physiological parameters. However, wearable sensors should be attached to skin with well comfortability. Also, they should be avoided bringing negative results when people participate activities. Consequently, flexibility is an important parameter for evaluating and improving the performances of wearable sensors. In this review, the development of different flexible materials was summarized. Besides, the construction and application of wearable sensors based on different flexible materials were also discussed. Additionally, the current challenges, coping strategies and development direction of these flexible wearable sensors were discussed.

Abstract:Wearable electronics have received extensive attention in human–machine interactions, robotics, and health monitoring. The use of multifunctional sensors that are capable of measuring a variety of mechanical or environmental stimuli can provide new functionalities for wearable electronics. Advancements in material science and system integration technologies have contributed to the development of high-performance flexible multifunctional sensors. This review presents the main approaches, based on functional materials and device structures, to improve sensing parameters, including linearity, detection range, and sensitivity to various stimuli. The details of electrical, biocompatible, and mechanical properties of self-powered sensors and wearable wireless systems are systematically elaborated. Finally, the current challenges and future developmental directions are discussed to offer a guide to fabricate advanced multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:Wearable health monitoring systems have gained considerable interest in recent years owing to their tremendous promise for personal portable health watching and remote medical practices. The sensors with excellent flexibility and stretchability are crucial components that can provide health monitoring systems with the capability of continuously tracking physiological signals of human body without conspicuous uncomfortableness and invasiveness. The signals acquired by these sensors, such as body motion, heart rate, breath, skin temperature and metabolism parameter, are closely associated with personal health conditions. This review attempts to summarize the recent progress in flexible and stretchable sensors, concerning the detected health indicators, sensing mechanisms, functional materials, fabrication strategies, basic and desired features. The potential challenges and future perspectives of wearable health monitoring system are also briefly discussed.

Abstract:The popularity of health concepts and the wave of digitalization have driven the innovation of sensors in the medical field. Such continual development has made sensors progress in the direction of safety, flexibility, and intelligence for continuous monitoring of vital signs, which holds considerable promise for changing the way humans live and even treat diseases. To this end, flexible wearable devices with high performance, such as high sensitivity, high stability, and excellent biodegradability, have attracted strong interest from scientists. Herein, a review of flexible wearable sensors for temperature, heart rate, human motion, respiratory rate, glucose, and pH is highlighted. In addition, engineering issues are also presented, focusing on material selection, sensor fabrication, and power supply. Finally, potential challenges facing current technology and future directions of wearable sensors are also discussed.

Abstract:<p>Wearable electronics have revolutionized the way physiological parameters are sensed, detected, and monitored. In recent years, advances in flexible and stretchable hybrid electronics have created emergent properties that enhance the compliance of devices to our skin. With their unobtrusive attributes, skin conformable sensors enable applications toward real‐time disease diagnosis and continuous healthcare monitoring. Herein, critical perspectives of flexible hybrid electronics toward the future of digital health monitoring are provided, emphasizing its role in physiological sensing. In particular, the strategies within the sensor composition to render flexibility and stretchability while maintaining excellent sensing performance are considered. Next, novel approaches to the functionalization of the sensor for physical or biochemical stimuli are extensively covered. Subsequently, wearable sensors measuring physical parameters such as strain, pressure, temperature, as well as biological changes in metabolites and electrolytes are reported. Finally, their implications toward early disease detection and monitoring are discussed, concluding with a future perspective into the challenges and opportunities in emerging wearable sensor designs for the next few years.</p>

Abstract:Advances in flexible and stretchable electronics, functional nanomaterials, and micro/nano manufacturing have been made in recent years. These advances have accelerated the development of wearable sensors. Wearable sensors, with excellent flexibility, stretchability, durability, and sensitivity, have attractive application prospects in the next generation of personal devices for chronic disease care. Flexible and stretchable wearable sensors play an important role in endowing chronic disease care systems with the capability of long-term and real-time tracking of biomedical signals. These signals are closely associated with human body chronic conditions, such as heart rate, wrist/neck pulse, blood pressure, body temperature, and biofluids information. Monitoring these signals with wearable sensors provides a convenient and non-invasive way for chronic disease diagnoses and health monitoring. In this review, the applications of wearable sensors in chronic disease care are introduced. In addition, this review exploits a comprehensive investigation of requirements for flexibility and stretchability, and methods of nano-based enhancement. Furthermore, recent progress in wearable sensors-including pressure, strain, electrophysiological, electrochemical, temperature, and multifunctional sensors-is presented. Finally, opening research challenges and future directions of flexible and stretchable sensors are discussed.

Abstract:High-performance wearable sensors that detect complex, multidimensional signals are indispensable in practical applications. Most existing sensors can only detect axial deformations or single stimuli, dramatically limiting their application fields. In this study, anisotropic strain and deformation-insensitive pressure sensors were effectively constructed based on a rigid-flexible synergistic stretchable substrate. Furthermore, we developed a three-dimensional integrated sensor with highly directional selective sensing through reasonable design and assembly. This integrated sensor recognizes the amplitude and direction of strain in the plane with a maximum gauge factor of 635 and an unprecedented selectivity of 13.99. Additionally, this device can also monitor the pressure outside the plane with a sensitivity of 0.277 kPa−1. We further investigated the working mechanism of sensor anisotropy and confirmed the application of the sensor in detecting complex multifreedom human joint movements. This research discovery provides new ideas and methods for developing multidimensional sensors, which is essential for broadening the application field of wearable electronic products.

Abstract:There is an increasing demand of soft and flexible electronic devices, retractable, skin-mountable, and wearable sensors in particular, which could be applied in personalized health-monitoring, human motion detection, human-machine interfaces, soft robotics, and so forth. This article categorizes and compares new stretchable flexible strain sensors embedded in wearable devices or garments, including the support material, deployment position, and maximum accuracy of the flexible sensor. The feedback form of the existing wearable system is summarized, and the design requirements of the new wearable sensor are proposed. This survey reveals that flexible, skin-mountable, and wearable strain sensors have potential in diverse applications while accuracy, repeatability, and real-time performance of sensors have to be improved for the study of motion capture and rehabilitation applications.

Abstract:Flexible wearable devices have been widely used in biomedical applications, the Internet of Things, and other fields, attracting the attention of many researchers. The physiological and biochemical information on the human body reflects various health states, providing essential data for human health examination and personalized medical treatment. Meanwhile, physiological and biochemical information reveals the moving state and position of the human body, and it is the data basis for realizing human–computer interactions. Flexible wearable physiological and biochemical sensors provide real-time, human-friendly monitoring because of their light weight, wearability, and high flexibility. This paper reviews the latest advancements, strategies, and technologies of flexibly wearable physiological and biochemical sensors (pressure, strain, humidity, saliva, sweat, and tears). Next, we systematically summarize the integration principles of flexible physiological and biochemical sensors with the current research progress. Finally, important directions and challenges of physiological, biochemical, and multimodal sensors are proposed to realize their potential applications for human movement, health monitoring, and personalized medicine.

Abstract:Abstract With the increasing awareness of personal health management in recent decades, various types of flexible and wearable body sensors have been developed. Thanks to the superiority of advanced wearable technologies, including miniaturization, portability, stretchability, comfort, intelligent human-machine interface, etc, flexible and wearable body sensors hold great promise for next generation biomedicine and healthcare applications. Unfortunately, the data precision, response speed, sensitivity and selectivity, durability, compatibility with flexible substrates, and preparation techniques still need to be enhanced and refined to meet the requirements of clinical evaluations or even commercialization. According to working principles, flexible and wearable sensing platforms can be roughly divided into four categories: physical sensors, chemical sensors, biosensors, and the combination of different types of sensors. Here, a brief review focused on the recent developments of these flexible and wearable sensors applied especially to biomedicine and healthcare is presented. In addition, the existing challenges and potential opportunities ahead in flexible and wearable sensor technologies are discussed. Finally, an outlook of wearable sensing platforms in biomedicine and healthcare is proposed. We hope this review can provide guidance for superior flexible and wearable sensing technologies in the future and can provide an outlook for commercial wearable sensors.

Abstract:With the development of cross-fertilisation in various disciplines, flexible wearable sensing technologies have emerged, bringing together many disciplines, such as biomedicine, materials science, control science, and communication technology. Over the past few years, the development of multiple types of flexible wearable devices that are widely used for the detection of human physiological signals has proven that flexible wearable devices have strong biocompatibility and a great potential for further development. These include electronic skin patches, soft robots, bio-batteries, and personalised medical devices. In this review, we present an updated overview of emerging flexible wearable sensor devices for biomedical applications and a comprehensive summary of the research progress and potential of flexible sensors. First, we describe the selection and fabrication of flexible materials and their excellent electrochemical properties. We evaluate the mechanisms by which these sensor devices work, and then we categorise and compare the unique advantages of a variety of sensor devices from the perspective of in vitro and in vivo sensing, as well as some exciting applications in the human body. Finally, we summarise the opportunities and challenges in the field of flexible wearable devices.

Abstract:Human body with curved and soft interfaces requests advanced flexible materials and structures for the interaction with organs and signal collection from targets in applications such as bioengineering and diagnostic devices.Among them,it is highly demanded to achieve creative design in flexible materials and structures with great stretchable capability for required applications.To this end,both inorganic and organic materials could be adopted and designed with assembly and self-assembly methods for flexible electronics and electrodes.Soft or flexible materials and structures inspired by nature can lead to highly conformal contacts between devices and the human body.These approaches hold great potential for applications in flexible electronics,medical imaging technology and portable disease diagnostics.Novel strategy on related sensors/actuator and energy storage/generation devices could overcome certain limitations on flexible materials engineering and thus advance the field as well.All these methods would deliver a profound impact to our future intelligent society.
