Abstract:Lithium-sulfur（Li-S） batteries are expected to be one of the candidates for next-generation highenergy-density batteries because of their ultra-high theoretical energy density（2600 Wh·kg-1）. However, it suffers from low sulfur utilization, rapid capacity fading, and the “lost effect” of lithium polysulfides（LiPSs）. These problems make the reaction kinetics of Li-S batteries sluggish, severely limiting their practical applications.Methods such as physical confinement and chemical adsorption can accelerate the redox reaction between sulfur,LiPSs, and Li2S, reduce the loss of LiPSs, and accelerate the kinetic process, which enable the battery with high energy density and long-cycle stability. Based on the overall electrochemical reaction process, this article reviews how materials used in recent years can facilitate the kinetic process, prevent the loss of LiPSs, and evaluate the corresponding strategies. The purpose of this review is to help guide the rational design of improved battery kinetics and the practical application of Li-S batteries.
Controllable Long-term Lithium Replenishment for Enhancing Energy Density and Cycle Life of Lithium-ion Batteries

Abstract:A persistent challenge plaguing lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) is the consumption of active lithium with the formation of SEI. This leads to an irreversible lithium loss in the initial cycle and a gradual further exhaustion of active lithium in subsequent cycles. While prelithiation has been proven effective in compensating for this loss by introducing additional active lithium into batteries, prior studies have predominantly concentrated on offsetting the initial lithium loss, often overlooking the continuous lithium consumption that occurs throughout cycling. To address this challenge, we employed a sustained in situ lithium replenishment strategy that involves the systematic release of additional lithium inventory through precise capacity control during long-term cycling. Our method utilizes a lithium replenishment separator (LRS) coated with dilithium squarate-carbon nanotube (Li2C4O4-CNT) as the lithium compensation reagent. Placing Li2C4O4 on the separator rather than within the cathode significantly reduces disruptions in conduction pathways and inhibits catalytic reactions with LiFePO4, preventing the formation of carbon residues. When implemented in the LiFePO4||graphite battery system, our approach resulted in an impressive 12.9% capacity improvement in the initial cycle and a remarkable 97.2% capacity retention over 700 cycles, surpassing the comparison group, which exhibited 80% capacity retention after 426 cycles. A controllable and sustainable lithium replenishment strategy was developed to achieve high-energy-density and long-lifespan lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:To fulfil the potential of Li-S batteries (LSBs) with high energy density and low cost, multiple challenges need to be addressed simultaneously. Most research in LSBs has been focused on the sulfur cathode design, although the performance is also known to be sensitive to other parameters such as binder, current collector, separator, lithium anode, and electrolyte. Here, an integrated LSB system based on the understanding of the different roles of binder, current collector, and separator is developed. By using the cross-linked carboxymethyl cellulose-citric acid (CMC-CA) binder, Toray carbon paper current collector, and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) coated separator, LSBs achieve a high capacity of 960 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles (2.5 mg cm-2 ) and 930 mAh g-1 after 50 cycles (5 mg cm-2 ) at 0.1 C. Moreover, the failure mechanism at a high sulfur loading with characteristics of fast capacity decay and infinite charging is discussed. This work highlights the synergistic effect of different components and the challenges towards more reliable LSBs with high sulfur loading.

Abstract:Solid-solid sulfur conversion reaction caused by cathode electrolyte interphase (CEI) can effectively prevent the dissolution of lithium polysulfides and theoretically improve the cycle stability of lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. However, once the volume of reduction products (Li 2 S) exceeds the maximal volume of hosts, the as-formed CEI will be destroyed and significantly shorten the cycle life. In this study, we report a simple capacity control strategy to obtain a stable CEI which can greatly increase the total capacity contribution of Li–S batteries throughout the whole lifespan. By adjusting the discharging condition, Li–S cells achieve a prolonged cycle life over 950 cycles and a remarkable total capacity of 289 Ah g −1 based on sulfur during the whole lifetime. Meanwhile, it is also found that the cycle life depends to a great extent on lithium anodes. This discharging strategy and understanding on the solid phase sulfur conversion under CEI mechanism can advance progress for the development of Li–S batteries.

Abstract:The lithium-ion battery, with a relatively small energy density of similar to 250 W h kg(-1), has dominantly powered many devices requiring small energy demands. However, there remains a need for a cheaper and smaller type of battery with higher energy density for energy-intensive storage purposes in the automotive, aircraft, and household energy sectors. With its higher specific capacity (1675 mA h g(-1)) and lower costs, the lithium-sulfur (Li-S) battery represents the most promising next generation battery. The main focus of scientific inquiry surrounding Li-S batteries lies at the cathode, where sulfur chemically bonds to lithium. Current challenges pertaining to the high performance cathode such as the dissolution of sulfur into the electrolyte and electrode volume changes are highlighted. This review focuses on recent developments in the last three years of various sulfur integration methods at the cathode that result in improved electrochemical performance, increased energy density, cyclic stability, and a higher capacity over the mainstream lithium-ion battery. In particular, the most recent approaches were systematically examined and compared including the use of carbon and non-carbon composites to stabilize sulfur. Ideal material hosts for sulfur atoms in the cathode for outstanding Li-S batteries were outlined and thoroughly discussed. Critical understanding and relevant knowledge were summarized aiming to provide general guidance for rational design of high-performance cathodes for advanced Li-S batteries.
In situ Construction of Robust Biphasic Surface Layers on Lithium Metal for Lithium-Sulfide Batteries with Long Cycle Life

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries have potential in high energy density battery systems. However, intermediates of lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) can easily shuttle to the Li anode and react with Li metal to deplete the active materials and cause rapid failure of the battery. A facile solution pretreatment method for Li anodes involving a solution of metal fluorides/dimethylsulfoxide was developed to construct robust biphasic surface layers (BSLs) in situ. The BSLs consist of lithiophilic alloy (Lix M) and LiF phases on Li metal, which inhibit the shuttle effect and increase the cycle life of Li-S batteries. The BSLs allow Li+ transport and they inhibit dendrite growth and shield the Li anodes from corrosive reaction with LiPSs. Li-S batteries containing BSLs-Li anodes demonstrate excellent cycling over 1000 cycles at 1 C and simultaneously maintain a high coulombic efficiency of 98.2 %. Based on our experimental and theoretical results, we propose a strategy for inhibition of the shuttle effect that produces high stability Li-S batteries.

Abstract:By optimizing the main materials in lithium‐air batteries, namely sulfolane as electrolyte solvent, lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) as electrolyte salt, carbon paper as current collector, and Li 2 O 2 –C hybrids as positive electrode materials, a performance of 800 cycles with a specific capacity of 1000 mAh g −1 (based on the total mass of positive electrode materials) and an average energy efficiency of 74.72% has been achieved in this work and for the first time reported in the field of lithium‐air battery. Sulfolane‐based electrolyte and carbon paper current collector play the most critical role in building such a lithium‐air battery of high cycle life. The findings described here are expected to benefit the pursuit of green, sustainable, and high‐performance lithium‐air batteries.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, due to the high theoretical energy density, are regarded as one of the most promising candidates for breaking the limitations of energy‐storage system based on Li‐ion batteries. Tremendous efforts have been made to meet the challenge of high‐performance Li–S batteries, in which a sulfur loading of above 5 mg cm−2 delivers an areal capacity higher than 5 mAh cm−2 without compromising specific capacity and cycling stability for practical applications. However, serious problems have been exposed during the scaling up of the sulfur loading. In this review, based on mechanistic insights into structural configuration, catalytic conversion, and interfacial engineering, the problems and corresponding strategies in the development of high‐loading Li–S batteries are highlighted and discussed, aiming at bridging the gap between fundamental research and practical cell‐level designs. Stemming from the current achievements, future directions targeting the high‐energy‐density Li–S batteries for commercialization are proposed.

Abstract:Anode-free lithium metal batteries (AF-LMBs) are attracting growing attention due to the burgeoning pursuit of high energy density. However, the poor reversibility of lithium-ion plating/stripping on the Cu anode triggers multiple issues, including rapid capacity loss, active lithium loss, and short lifetime. Herein, a cathode pre-lithiation strategy combined with a fluorine-containing electrolyte is introduced to achieve long-lifetime AF-LMBs. Furthermore, contact pre-lithiation, a more advanced and convenient strategy, has been introduced to precisely control the lithiation degree by adjusting the contact time. It has been demonstrated that over-lithiated Li1.3Mn2O4 can deliver additional lithium ions during the charging process, thus exhibiting 94.4% capacity retention after 40 cycles.

Abstract:Typical application scenarios, such as vehicle to grid (V2G) and frequency regulation, have imposed significant long-life demands on lithium-ion batteries. Herein, we propose an advanced battery life-extension method employing bidirectional pulse charging (BPC) strategy. Unlike traditional constant current charging methods, BPC strategy not only achieves comparable charging speeds but also facilitates V2G frequency regulation simultaneously. It significantly enhances battery cycle ampere-hour throughput and demonstrates remarkable life extension capabilities. For this interesting conclusion, adopting model identification and postmortem characterization to reveal the life regulation mechanism of BPC: it mitigates battery capacity loss attributed to loss of lithium-ion inventory (LLI) in graphite anodes by intermittently regulating the overall battery voltage and anode potential using a negative charging current. Then, from the perspective of internal side reaction, the life extension mechanism is further revealed as inhibition of solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) and lithium dendrite growth by regulating voltage with a bidirectional pulse current, and a semi-empirical life degradation model combining SEI and lithium dendrite growth is developed for BPC scenarios health management, the model parameters are identified by genetic algorithm with the life simulation exhibiting an accuracy exceeding 99%. This finding indicates that under typical rate conditions, adaptable BPC strategies can extend the service life of LFP battery by approximately 123%. Consequently, the developed advanced BPC strategy offers innovative perspectives and insights for the development of long-life battery applications in the future.

Abstract:Lithium–sulphur batteries are one very appealing power source with high energy density. But their practical use is still hindered by several issues including short lifespan, low efficiency and safety concern from the lithium anode. Polysulphide dissolution and insulating nature of sulphur are generally considered responsible for the capacity degradation. However, the detachment of discharge products, that is, highly polar lithium sulphides, from nonpolar carbon matrix (for example, graphene) has been rarely studied as one critical factor. Here we report the strongly covalent stabilization of sulphur and its discharge products on amino-functionalized reduced graphene oxide that enables stable capacity retention of 80% for 350 cycles with high capacities and excellent high-rate response up to 4 C. The present study demonstrates a feasible and effective strategy to solve the long-term cycling difficulty for lithium–sulphur batteries and also helps to understand the capacity decay mechanism involved. Lithium–sulphur batteries are a promising candidate for next-generation electrochemical energy storage. Here, the authors report a facile strategy for covalent stabilization of sulphur and its discharge products on amino-functionalized reduced graphene oxide, which enhances the cycling stability.
Interfacial Plasticization Strategy Enabling a Long-Cycle-Life Solid-State Lithium Metal Battery

Abstract:The limited ionic conductivity and unstable interface due to poor solid-solid interface pose significant challenges to the stable cycling of solid-state batteries (SSBs). Herein, an interfacial plasticization strategy is proposed by introducing a succinonitrile (SN)-based plastic curing agent into the polyacrylonitrile (PAN)-based composite polymer electrolytes (CPE) interface. The SN at the interface strongly plasticizes the PAN in the CPE, which reduces the crystallinity of the PAN drastically and enables the CPE to obtain a low modulus surface, but it still maintains a high modulus internally. The reduced crystallinity of PAN provides more amorphous regions, which are favorable for Li+ transport. The gradient modulus structure not only ensures intimate interfacial contact but also favors the suppression of Li dendrites growth. Consequently, the interfacial plasticized CPE (SF-CPE) obtains a high ionic conductivity of 4.8 × 10-4 S cm-1 as well as a high Li+ transference number of 0.61. The Li-Li symmetric cell with SF-CPE can cycle for 1000 h at 0.1 mA cm-2, the LiFeO4 (LFP)-Li full-cell demonstrates a high capacity retention of 86.1% after 1000 cycles at 1 C, and the LiCoO2 (LCO)-Li system also exhibits an excellent cycling performance. This work provides a novel strategy for long-life solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have been of paramount interest due to their high specific energy, environmental benignity, and low-cost production as a promising candidate among the next generation of rechargeable batteries. Even they represent one of the most mature battery systems, the high discharging capacity and stable long cycling performance cannot be fully realized, especially under practical conditions, which hamper their entrance to the energy storage market in the near future. Solutions to unsolved issues that arise during the complex and multiphase conversion-type chemistry involved in LSBs are still being researched, including irreversible relocation of polysulfides, slow reaction kinetics, and low reliability of lithium anode. Achieving a scientific understanding of the current challenges toward the individual components in cells and the existing status of research strategies is vitally important to the development of LSBs. In this critical review, we attempt to summarize our current comprehension in this field, analyze and classify possible strategies to address the main concerns in the research on LSBs, and introduce design pathways for the further improvement of LSBs toward practical applications. Advanced methodology toward the synthesis of desirable host materials of the electrode with encapsulation effect via nanostructured design; the tailorable adsorption and catalysis property; chemical confinements function by covalent linking; modification of electronic structure, heteroatom doping, and defects are overviewed and highlighted. Methods for regulating salt anions, solvents, auxiliary additives in electrolytes, and the constructions of interlayers toward deployable separator and anode enabling interfacial protection; the establishment of novel electrode fabrication and functional batteries assembly systems technologies are discussed for the further development of viable LSBs. The strategies and perspectives outlined in this review will provide further research directions and help to achieve the aim of exploring high-performance LSBs technology with high energy density and long cycling stability.

Design of Non-Depleting Electrolyte Additive to Prolong the Cycle Life of Practical Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Battery technology is pivotal in addressing energy efficiency and environmental sustainability challenges. Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries feature promising high energy density and sustainability, but are hindered by a short cycle life under lean lithium and electrolyte conditions. A critical hurdle for Li-S batteries is the selection of an optimal electrolyte solution, crucial for controlling effective polysulfide electrochemical reactions. The conventional ether- based Li-S electrolyte, consisting of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (LiTFSI) and lithium nitrate (LiNO3), frequently suffers from LiNO3 depletion in high-energy-density applications. To address the capacity decay in Li-S batteries caused by LiNO3 depletion, this investigation introduces 2-nitrophenol lithium (NPL) as an alternative. By incorporating 25 1 mM NPL and 1 M LiTFSI in a 1,3-dioxolane/1,2-dimethoxyethane (DOL/DME) solvent, NPL mediates polysulfide oxidation during charging and prevents polysulfide corrosion, therefore improving Li retention and plating behavior. This results in Li-S batteries with NPL achieving 310 cycles, significantly surpassing the 75 cycles observed with traditional LiNO3-containing electrolytes using lean lithium anode. Pouch cells incorporating NPL exhibit stable cycling over 80 cycles, maintaining 75% of their capacity. The molecular structure of NPL prevents decomposition and facilitates interaction with polysulfides to minimize corrosion, positioning it as a strong substitute for LiNO3. This highlights NPL as a promising solution for extending the lifespan of Li-S batteries.

Abstract:An active crosstalk occurs between the cathode and lithium (Li) anode, revealing an important factor influencing cycling of rechargeable Li batteries . The rough cathode surface is copied by the soft Li anode, resulting in inhomogeneous current density and exaggerated localized Li plating/stripping, causing an internal short circuit. Manipulation of cathode topography is required to extend the Li‐cell cycle life. Lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries are one of the most promising next‐generation energy storage technologies due to their high theoretical energy and low cost. However, Li–S cells with practically high energy still suffer from a very limited cycle life with reasons which remain unclear. Here, through cell study under practical conditions, it is proved that an internal short circuit (ISC) is a root cause of early cell failure and is ascribed to the crosstalk between the S cathode and Li anode. The cathode topography affects S reactions through influencing the local resistance and electrolyte distribution, particularly under lean electrolyte conditions. The inhomogeneous reactions of S cathodes are easily mirrored by the Li anodes, resulting in exaggerated localized Li plating/stripping, Li filament formation, and eventually cell ISC. Manipulating cathode topography is proven effective to extend the cell cycle life under practical conditions. The findings of this work shed new light on the electrode design for extending cycle life of high‐energy Li–S cells, which are also applicable for other rechargeable Li or metal batteries.

Abstract:Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered as promising candidates for high-energy-density battery systems owing to the high theoretical capacity of sulfur (1675 mAh g(-1)) and low cost of raw materials. However, their practical application is hampered by low rate capability and rapid degradation of capacity, arising from the passivation of the cathode by lithium sulfides (Li2S2 /Li2S) deposited during discharge and low interfacial stability of the Li anode. Herein, we report on a comprehensive strategy to select co-solvent to the electrolyte to regulate the deposition of lithium sulfides during charge-discharge process. We show that addition of a co-solvent with high solubility, and strong interaction with Li2S to a conventional electrolyte effectively mitigates the formation of a passivating layer on the sulfur cathode and dramatically improves the interfacial stability of the Li anode. We demonstrate that Sulfolane (SL) has these properties and that a Li-S cell with an electrolyte containing 6 vol% SL exhibits outstanding cyclic performance (0.083% decay per cycle) and rate capability (capacity density of 765 mAh g(-1) at rate of 1.0C). Thus, we provide a facile strategy for the selection of co-solvent for improved performance of Li-S batteries, realizing their practical application for high-energy-density battery systems.

Abstract:LiFePO4/Graphite battery is considered to be the ideal Li‐ion batteries for grid energy storage which requires long cycle life. However, the formation of SEI in the first charge and discharge process and regeneration of SEI during cycling causes continuous loss of active lithium, which reduces the reversible capacity of the battery and shortens its cycle life. Pre‐lithiation of the negative electrode is an effective method to supplement the loss of active lithium, thereby improving the cycle life and energy density of the battery. This work uses stable lithium powder (SLMP), solid electrolyte (LLZTO) and PVDF to prepare a stable pre‐lithiation reagent which is coated on the surface of graphite electrode using a microgravure coating machine. The effects of the proposed pre‐lithiation method on initial Coulombic efficiency, cycle life and calendar life of batteries are investigated. It is found that this method can increase the cycle life of graphite/lithium iron phosphate pouch cells, with the initial Coulombic efficiency increased by 3.43%, and is readily applicable for industrial application. Insight into the Fading Mechanism of the Solid‐Conversion Sulfur Cathodes and Designing Long Cycle Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) formed on the surface of the sulfur cathode plays a vital role in determining whether lithium–sulfur batteries can function through a solid‐phase conversion reaction, which can effectively hinder the dissolution of polysulfides. However, there is still a lack of systematical research on the evolution and failure mechanism of the CEI for Li–S batteries. Here, it is found that the integrity of the as‐formed CEI is strongly related to the content of sulfur and the amount of electrolyte. When the volume of reduction product (Li2S/Li2S2) exceeds the maximal volume of the carbon host, the as‐formed CEI is unable to withstand the volume variation upon repeated lithiation/delithiation. The repeated fracture and repair of CEI unceasingly consumes electrolyte and active materials. Thus, to achieve prolonged cycle stability via solid‐phase conversion, the content of sulfur and the interior space of the host should be well matched. Based on the above understanding, the designed sulfur‐graphite full cell shows an excellent cyclability over 2000 cycles. This work reveals the failure mechanism of solid‐phase conversion reactions in Li–S batteries, and provides some inspiration for designing long‐life and high‐sulfur‐content cathode materials. The solid–solid sulfur reaction via the cathode electrolyte interface (CEI) strategy can theoretically reduce the electrolyte/sulfur ratio and obtain a high energy density battery. The stability of the CEI is strongly related to the content of sulfur and the amount of electrolyte. Only when the sulfur content matches the pore volume of the carbon host, a stable CEI and long lifespan can be obtained.
