Abstract:The beam dynamics in micro-pulse electron guns (MPG) is studied using simulation methods in this paper. Based on the working principle of MPGs and the characteristics of its beam dynamics, a multi-particle trace simulation about the three-dimensional movement of the electrons in a MPG cavity is given by a program SEEG (Secondary Electron Emission Gun) written in VC + +. The paper includes the principles of simulation and the stability tests of the program SEEG. A specific MPG is simulated using the program SEEG and the simulated beam dynamic results are given.

Abstract:To obtain high-resolution of the subsurface structure, we modeled multi-depth slanted airgun sources to attenuate the source ghost. By firing the guns in sequence according to their relative depths, such a source can build constructive primaries and destructive ghosts. To evaluate the attenuation of ghosts, the normalized squared error of the spectrum of the actual vs the expected signature is computed. We used a typical 680 cu.in airgun string and found via simulations that a depth interval of 1 or 1.5 m between airguns is optimum when considering deghosting performance and operational feasibility. When more subarrays are combined, preliminary simulations are necessary to determine the optimum depth combination. The frequency notches introduced by the excess use of subarrays may negatively affect the deghosting performance. Two or three slanted subarrays can be combined to remove the ghost effect. The sequence combination may partly affect deghosting but this can be eliminated by matched filtering. Directivity comparison shows that a multi-depth slanted source can significantly attenuate the notches and widen the energy transmission stability area.

Abstract:Design of an energy-modified electron gun is of significance to do some research on the properties of Diamond-amplified cathode. Based on the design method of the Pierce electron gun, the optimum parameters of the electron gun have been obtained using the Opera-3D program. And the beam waist’s position, the beam current, the beam size and the beam emittance related to the electron bean energy was investigated in this paper.

Abstract:Using the primary program 3DRun given by code VC++, multiplication effect of secondary emission microwave electron gun(SEMEG) is investigated. The relation between multiplication effect and length of cavity and electric field in the gun is studied with one-dimension simulation. The Longitudinal bunching and energy focusing of out electrons is calculated in detail at 10mm length of cavity and 5.4MV/m electric field in the gun. The beam dynamics with space charge effect is also investigated with 3DRun. The emittance of out beam is calculated. With simulation and analysis, it is proved that SEMEG can provide high-current, low-emittance electron pulse.

Abstract:The micro-pulse electron gun (MPG) is a new type of cold cathode microwave electron gun that can produce short duration, high current density electron beams The principle of MPG is multipactor (or multipacting). In this paper, our proof-of-principle experiment on a MPG is presented. One kind of Cu-Al-Mg alloy has been used as the cold cathode. A current with the density up to 100mA/cm(2) was observed. The results agree well with the analytical calculation and the computer simulation. The experiment verifies both the analytical theory and the computer code, and prepares the way for the higher current density approach.

Abstract:In this paper, we present the simulation results of a 1.6 cell X-band photocathode RF gun for ultra-low emittance electron beams. It will work at 9.3 GHz. The emittance, bunch length, electron energy and energy spread at the gun exit are optimized at bunch charge of 1pC using PARMELA. Electron bunches with emittance about 0.1 mm·mrad and bunch length less than 100 fs can be obtained from this gun. A PITZ type coupler is adopted in this gun and an initial simulation by MAFIA is also given in this paper.

Abstract:The Micro-Pulse Electron Gun (MPG) is a new type of microwave electron gun that is based on the multipactor discharge. In this paper, the MPG emission currents at different RF power levels are measured and discussed. The steady-state and transient dynamics of multipactor are used to explain the experiment waveforms. The dependence of the multipactor saturation current on the RF gap voltage is also given by the SEEG code. The experimental results agree with the theory qualitatively.

Abstract:This paper reports the simulation of an electron gun. The effects of some parameters on the beam quality were studied and optimal choices were identified. It gives numerical beam qualities in common electrostatic triode gun, and the dependences on design parameters such as electrode geometries and bias voltages to these electrodes are shown. An electron beam of diameter 5 mm with energy of five kilo electron volt was assumed for simulation process. Some design parameters were identified as variable parameters in the presence of space charge. These parameters are the inclination angle of emission electrode, the applied voltage to focusing electrode, the gap width between the emission electrode and the focusing electrode and the diameter of the focusing electrode. The triode extraction system is designed and optimized by using CST software (for Particle Beam Simulations). The physical design of the extraction system is given in this paper. From the simulation results, it is concluded that the inclination angle of the emission electrode is optimized at twenty two point five degrees, the applied voltage to the focusing electrode was optimized and found at minus sixteen volts, also, the separation distance (gap between emission electrode and focusing electrode) equals to four milli meter, and the diameter of the emission electrode is fourteen milli meter.

Abstract:Electron beam fluorescence technology is an advanced non-contact measurement in rarefied flow fields, the fluorescence signal intensity is positively correlated with the electron beam current. The ion bombardment secondary emission electron gun is suitable for the technology. To enhance the beam current, COMSOL simulations and analyses were con-ducted to examine plasma density distribution in the discharge chamber under the effects of various conditions and the electric field distribution between the cathode and the spacer gap. The anode shape and discharge pressure conditions were optimized to increase plasma density. Additionally, an improved spacer structure was designed with the dual purpose of enhancing the electric field distribution between the cathode-spacer gap and improving vacuum dif-ferential effects. This design modification aims to increase the pass rate of secondary elec-trons. Both simulation and experimental results demonstrated that the performance of the optimized electron gun was effectively enhanced. When the electrode voltage remains con-stant and the discharge gas pressure is adjusted to around 8 Pa, the maximum beam current was increased from 0.9mA to 1.6 mA.

Abstract:Micro-pulse electron gun (MPG) employs the basic concept of multipacting to produce high-current and short-pulse electron beams from a radio-frequency (RF) cavity. The concept of MPG has been proposed for more than two decades. However, the unstable operating state of MPG vastly obstructs its practical applications. This paper presents a study on the steady operating state of a micro-pulse electron gun with theory and experiments. The requirements for the steady operating state are proposed through the analysis of the interaction between the RF cavity and the beam load. Accordingly, a MPG cavity with the frequency of 2856 MHz has been designed, constructed, and tested. Some primary experiments have been finished. Both the unstable and stable operating states of the MPG have been observed. The stable output beam current has been detected at about 3.8 mA. Further experimental study is under way now.

Abstract:The beam dynamics in micro-pulse electron gun (MPG) is studied using SEEG (Secondary Electron Emission Gun) program. First, without the consideration of the space charge effect, the process of longitudinal direction beam bunching in MPG is given. Second, the formation of the saturation current affected by the space charge effect and bunching effect is studied. Then, the design and optimization of the micro-pulse gun cavity and the simulation results of the cavity by SEEG are given. At last, the scheme of a experimental micro-pulse gun designed by Tsinghua University is introduced.

Abstract:To study the interaction between low-energy electrons and molecules, a recoil-ion and electron momentum spectrometer (RIMS) has been developed at Shanghai EBIT laboratory. As the low-energy electron source, the ELG-2 electron gun (Kimball Physics) coupled with an ultrafast pulse generator has been tested. The energy of the electron beam ranges from a few eV to 2 keV, and the pulse width of the beam is about 1 ns.

Abstract:A compact Faraday cup reported in this paper is designed to investigate the current distributions of the electron beams of Traveling Wave Tube's guns. It consists of a 0.06 mm thick molybdenum aperture plate and a copper shield with a graphite collector inside. There are plates with different laser-cut aperture holes that were 100 mu m, 50 mu m, 20 mu m and 10 mu m in diameter for measuring electron beams with different sizes. The thermal analysis of the Faraday cup with pulse beam heating was performed and discussed in this paper. The pulse test shows that this device has fast response and small dissipation. A 0.58 beam perveance (mu P) electron gun with expected minimum beam radius 1.0 mm was measured with the Faraday cup and the three-dimensional current density distribution and beam envelope were presented. The experiment results show that the design is reasonable for measuring the electron beam with a high resolution. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:To design the coupler of one kind of thermionic cathode microwave electronic gun, we apply the "energy method", which calculates the coupler factor between the waveguide and cavities of the electronic gun. So we can design the geometry size of the coupling iris. MAFIA code is used. Comparing with the experiment results, the simulating results is in agreement with measurement about 10%-30% deviation. "Energy method" is an efficient and simply method to calculate the coupler factor between cavities and waveguide.

Abstract:We report recent progress on the design of a normal conducting CW electron gun, APEX-II (Advanced Photo-injector EXperiment-II) at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. APEX-II is an upgrade of the successful APEX gun and the LCLS-II (Linac Coherent Light Source-II) injector, aiming at applications for Free electron laser (FEL) such as LCLS-II High Energy upgrade, UED (Ultrafast Electron Diffraction) and UEM (Ultrafast Electron Microscopy). The APEX-II adopted a two-cell cavity design with resonant frequency of 162.5 MHz. The APEX-II gun is targeting to achieve exceeding 30 MV/m of launch gradient at the cathode and output energy above 1.5 MeV with transverse emittance of 0.1 um at 100 pC. Advanced MOGA optimization technique has been used for both the RF cavity design and extensive beam dynamics studies using APEX-like and LCLS-II like injector layout. Detailed RF designs, beam dynamics studies, preliminary engineering design and FEA analysis will be presented, with cavity features that were demonstrated to be crucial in the operation of the APEX gun.

Abstract:In the terahertz band, vacuum electronic devices (VEDs) encounter several challenges. One of the key issues is the formation and maintenance of fine pencil beam. This article proposes a numerical simulation code, called the 2-D finite element electron gun (2D_FE_EG), to simulate and analyze the fine pencil beam. The code utilizes the Galerkin method of finite element to solve the Poisson equation and generate an axisymmetric electrostatic field solver. To accurately track the trajectory of the fine pencil beam, the entire solution region is discretized using inhomogeneous triangular meshes, with locally refined meshes in specific areas, such as the emitting surface and electron beam tunnel. The beam trajectory is determined using the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method, and the space charge density of the mesh node is calculated by generating discretized flow tubes with a fraction of the beam current. Additionally, a self-consistent iterative process is implemented to account for the thermal initial velocity and the space-charge-limited emission. The electrostatic field and space charge density in the spherical diode region are iterated until the emission current is stabilized, followed by the convergence of the beam trajectory in the drift tube region. Experimental tests using the electron gun of a D-band traveling wave tube (TWT) are conducted to validate the simulation code.

Abstract:Triple-GEM detectors are a well known technology used in high energy physics experiments. A reliable Monte Carlo simulation has to be developed to reproduce the performance which have been measured experimentally, for example in beam tests, and be able to infer the future behavior in real conditions. In detail, the software has to simulate the response of the detector to the passage of particles, from the primary ionization, to the amplification and diffusion of the electrons and eventually to the induction of the charge on the anode strips. In the case of gas detectors, existing softwares such as GARFIELD++ already perform a very detailed simulation of the physical processes but are CPU time consuming. In this presentation a description of a faster simulation is presented. It models the results about the electron production (primary ionization and avalanche) and diffusion in a triple-GEM obtained from GARFIELD++ and then it reconstructs the signal induced on each anode strip according to the Shockley-Ramo theorem. The simulation has been tuned on the data collected in several beam tests and it can reproduce the real values of time and charge measured by the strip. When the reconstruction algorithms used in the field of Micro Pattern Gas Detectors, such as the Charge Centroid or the micro-Time Projection Chamber readout, are applied on the simulated data, the model shows performance comparable to the experimental one. This provides a validation of this model and allows to extend its usage in different conditions, i.e. geometries, presence of magnetic field, high voltage settings, different direction of the incident particles, to evaluate the expected outcome of the triple-GEM in those cases.

Abstract:A 1.3 GHz photocathode RF gun is under study in peking University. The photocathode RF gun, composed of gun cavity, photocathode and Laser system, is expected to deliver a electron beam with a normalized transverse rms emittance of 1π mm·mrad at a charge of 1nC. Its performance has been studied by the space-charge tracking code PARMELA. The influences of the initialized electron beam were also studied. The emittance compensation technique is employed. After optimization of the parameters was achieved, the normalized transverse emittance is 1.39 πmm·mrad at the gun exit.
Steady state multipacting in a micro-pluse electron gun

Abstract:Multipacting is a resonant electron discharge phenomenon via secondary electron emission, while micropulse electron gun (MPG) utilizes the multipacting current in a radio-frequency (RF) cavity to produce short pulse electron beams. The concept of MPG has been proposed for many years. However, the unstable operating state of MPG vastly obstructs its practical applications. This paper presents a study on the steady state mulitpacting in a MPG. The requirements for steady state multipacting are proposed through the analysis of the interaction between the RF cavity and the beam load. Accordingly, a MPG cavity with the frequency of 2856 MHz has been designed and constructed. Various kinds of grid-anodes are tested in our primary experiments. Both the unstable and stable multipacting current have been observed. Presently, the stable output beam current has been detected at about 12.2 mA. Further experimental study is under way now.
