Abstract:A coherent microwave and millimeter wave generation from fast-wave gyro-devices are attractive due to their high power handing capability. They have many applications such as plasma generation and heating, high gradient particle accelerators, and material processing. In the fast-wave gyro-devices, since the beam-wave interaction takes place between a transverse electric field of a guided wave and an electron transverse momentum, producing a high quality gyrating electron beam with a low velocity spread is a critical issue in the design of high performance gyro-devices. Different types of electron guns producing the gyrating electron beam with a large transverse momentum have been studied in many countries. The double-anode and single-anode magnetron-injection-guns (MIG) are commonly used. Due to the mechanical complexity of the double-anode MIG , however, the single-anode MIG which does not include the modulating anode seems attractive for use in practical devices. This paper describes studying on a single-anode MIG which produce a high quality gyrating electron beam. The design is based on analytic trade-off equations. And computer simulation uses the electron trajectory code-EGUN. The electron gun is used for a W-band, TE01 gyro-TWT amplifier which required to producing a small orbit electron beam. The electron gun parameters for the gyro-amplifier are listed in Table 1. The initial electron gun design starts with analytic trade-off equations developed by Baird and Lawson. The trade-off equations derived from adiabatic assumption and conservation of canonical angular momentum provide a useful guideline for setting up basic design parameters such as a cathode angle tilted with respect to a gun axis, a beam emitting surface radius, and an anode-cathode gap for a given beam voltage and solenoid magnetic fields at the cathode and the beam-wave interaction region. Fig. 1 shows a cathode magnetic field (Bc) and a magnetic field compression ratio as a function of a beam emitting radius (rc).It is well to known that the conservation law remains valid in a space charge dominated electron gun and in a non-adiabatic condition as well. Then we use the electron trajectory code-EGUN to obtain the final optimal parameters. Fig.2, 3, 4 shows the effect of the beam current, the anode-cathode gap and the anode voltage on the ratio of the transverse velocity to the axial velocity spread α and the axial velocity spread Δvz/vz respectively. © 2006 IEEE.
