Abstract:In this paper, a series of elasto-plastic large deflection analyses were performed by the finite element method to investigate the fundamental influences of strain hardening of the material on buckling/plastic collapse behaviour of plates under thrust. Two types of stress-strain relationships were assumed in the analyses: a bilinear relationship and an asymptotic relationship. It was found that: (1) Strain hardening has a little influence on ultimate strength of thin plates, but has a large influence on that of thick plate. (2) Strain hardening has a large influence on post-ultimate strength behaviour of both thin and thick plates. When the strain hardening rate is relatively high, the load carrying capacity after the ultimate strength does not drop down so much, and becomes higher than the ultimate strength with the increase in deformation. (3) The maximum load is attained only in a certain range of the slenderness ratio of the plate when the stress-strain relation-ship is represented by a asymptotic curve. (4) The post-buckling behaviour is quite different between a plate with an asymptotic stress-strain relationship and that with a bilinear stress-strain relationship, when the elastically evaluated buckling strength is nearly equal to the proportional limit. Based on the calculated results, strength criterion against buckling/plastic collapse was proposed for plates with a high strain hardening rate, assuming some critical magnitude of lateral deflection.
