Abstract:This brief presents a low phase noise class-C voltage-controlled oscillator with bond wire inductors. To improve the Q-factor of inductors, the voltage-controlled oscillator employs bond wires as the inductors of the resonators. A transient-analysis-compatible equivalent circuit is proposed to precisely estimate the influence of mutual inductance, parasitic components and silicon substrate. Possible phenomena of oscillation mode ambiguity and oscillation failure are analyzed to be relative with the magnetic coupling between bond wires. An equation is derived to set up the relation among oscillation mode, bond wire coupling and frequency ratio of adjacent oscillators. And a costless placement reorder method is proposed to prevent the oscillator cores from oscillating failure and mode ambiguity. The voltage-controlled oscillator is implemented in a 65-nm CMOS process. Ten groups of gold double bond wires with a 20 $\mu \text{m}$ diameter, 70 $\mu \text{m}$ height and 800 $\mu \text{m}$ horizontal length are adopted as the inductors. The total tuning range of the oscillator is from 2.22 GHz to 4.46 GHz. When oscillating at 4.46 GHz and the output frequency divide ratio is 2, the output signal provides phase noise performance of −137.3 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset from 2.23 GHz. The maximum power consumption is 38 mW and each oscillator core occupies a chip area of only 0.112 mm 2 .

Abstract:At the L/S band, the digital array radars with digital beam-forming characteristics require a compact RF module for a plane array. Such an RF module would require a small-sized local clock generation to synchronize with the central distributed clock signal. This paper proposes a 0.04 mm(2), broadband local clock generation for the RF module in digital array radar. In such a multi-band digital array radar, the linearity of the clock generator is a bottleneck. A linearity enhanced algorithm for switched-capacitor digitally-assisted oscillators is proposed in this paper. In this linearity enhancement technique, a calibration resistor array is used to improve frequency-tuning characteristics. The digitally-assisted oscillator has a highly linearized frequency tuning curve without demanding much more power and silicon area. A prototype is fabricated using a 55-nm CMOS process. From measurement, it has a frequency tuning range from 1.3 GHz to 2.5 GHz while occupying 225 x 180 mu m(2). The measured coarse bank tuning maximum DNL is 0.39 LSB, and the maximum INL is 4.64 LSB, which has been reduced to 43% of the other state-of-art work. The maximum power consumption is 15.8 mW from a 1.2 V supply voltage.

Abstract:A novel low power, low phase noise CMOS oscillator based on thin film bulk acoustic resonator (FBAR) is submitted in this paper, which aims at application in wireless sensor networks. This oscillator is designed as current-reuse configuration to reduce power dissipation. The simulation results show that the oscillator operating at 1.878 GHz consumes 1.8 mW with a low supply voltage of 900 mV. That is only a half of power consumption of the conventional topologies. Moreover, its phase noises are -107 dBc/Hz and -135 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz and 100 kHz offsets respectively, and its FOM is -238 dBc/Hz.

Abstract:Ring oscillator has been frequently utilized to extract circuits' AC parameters and analyze their variation properties nowadays. Addressable test chip has been introduced to integrate more test structures on one chip without losing the testing accuracy, yet layout work of test chip containing large numbers of test structures is time consuming and prone to manual errors, which becomes even worse for complex test structures such as ring oscillators consisting of amounts of basic cells. In this paper, an area-efficient ring oscillator based addressable test chip design is proposed along with a dedicated automatic layout generation procedure. Special attentions are paid to the schematic and layout design, and the experimental results of the implementations at both 16nm FinFET and 28nm technology nodes are obtained and analyzed to further confirm its feasibility and reliability.

Abstract:This paper reports on the design of a low-power high-accuracy oscillator intended to serve as a clock reference for passive RFID tag. For this purpose, we have proposed an RC oscillator scheme adopting the efficient and robust resistor calibration. This novel calibration technique allows to achieving a frequency variation of only ±2.5% in the worst case, according to our 405 corners (PVT variation) simulation. It also shows that the power consumption is only 800nW, and its overall figure-of-merit exceeds most of the state-of-art circuits.

Abstract:This paper presents a high-precision oscillator using a single comparator. A reference bias current is used to charge and discharge the capacitor array to generate a 100MHz square wave signal. Realized by Hlmc55ef process with 1.2V power supply, the proposed oscillator exhibits 59 ppm/°C average temperature coefficient and less than 1.88% frequency deviation at different process corners within the specified temperature range.

Abstract:It is hardly a revelation to note that wireless and mobile communications have grown tremendously during the last few years. This growth has placed stringent requi- ments on channel spacing and, by implication, on the phase noise of oscillators. C- pounding the challenge has been a recent drive toward implementations of transceivers in CMOS, whose inferior 1/f noise performance has usually been thought to disqualify it from use in all but the lowest-performance oscillators. Low noise oscillators are also highly desired in the digital world, of course. The c- tinued drive toward higher clock frequencies translates into a demand for ev- decreasing jitter. Clearly, there is a need for a deep understanding of the fundamental mechanisms g- erning the process by which device, substrate, and supply noise turn into jitter and phase noise. Existing models generally offer only qualitative insights, however, and it has not always been clear why they are not quantitatively correct.

Abstract:In order to reduce the area, power consumption and manufacturing cost of the DC power management chip, this letter presents a small area, low power consumption and low manufacturing cost oscillator scheme applied to the DC power management chip. The proposed oscillator scheme applies a new type of reference voltage scheme, which consists of four depletion NMOS transistors and a resistor to reduce manufacturing costs, circuit area, and power consumption. The proposed oscillator scheme has been implemented with 0.18µm process and layout area is 170µm×110µm. At the supply voltage of 1.8-5V, the total power consumption the proposed oscillator is 0.8-3µw and generate a 5.5 kHz square wave.

Abstract:This article proposes a circuit architecture and design strategy of a low-noise oscillator based on the distributed RC network. The distributed RC network receives a differential step input and propagates the true phase through the resistive path while the complementary phase through the capacitive path. It effectively suppresses the effect of noise by increasing the signal transition slope at the time of interest. It is achieved by embedding a bandpass characteristic with a phase delay of $\pi $ . A 358-kHz quadrature oscillator with a fourth-stage RC network is implemented using the 0.18-$\mu \text{m}$ CMOS process. It achieves an figure of merit (FoM) of −161.2 dBc/Hz at a 100-Hz offset with a stable 20-dB roll-off in the phase noise and an Allan deviation floor of less than 0.7 ppm.

Abstract:An on-chip sub-μW RC oscillator suitable for ultra-low power applications is presented. A technique that cancels both comparator delay and offset are proposed to improve the frequency stability against variations of temperature and supply voltage. This relaxation oscillator is designed and simulated in a 180-nm CMOS technology. The post layout simulation results show that the proposed circuit has a 1-cycle start-up time, and the frequency drift is less than ±0.6%. For the supply voltage changing from 0.9 to 1.2 V, the variation of frequency is -0.72% ~ +0.68% and the temperature coefficient is 75.5 ppm/°C over 0 to 90°C. The power consumption of the proposed oscillator is 255 nW at TT and 27°C.

Abstract:In order to meet the requirement of fast starting to work for wireless sensor network system in deep duty cycle running mode, a crystal oscillator with fast starting characteristics is expected. In this paper, the crystal oscillator theory is reviewed, and the key factor that limits starting speed of conventional crystal oscillator is revealed. A new way to overcome slowly starting is proposed, and 10 times faster performance is achieved in a practice chip design.

Abstract:This brief describes a pseudodigital oscillator design for low-voltage applications. To overcome the start-up problem of the digitally controlled ring oscillator with an ultralow supply voltage, a digitally controlled relaxation oscillator (DCRXO) that utilizes an inverter-based comparator is proposed. The pseudocomparator (PC), which is a variable threshold inverter, followed by an inverter, is introduced and a digital calibration circuit is used to automatically set the threshold of the PC for process-insensitive operation in the initial state. The DCRXO implemented in 65-nm CMOS consumes 17.8 μW from a 0.35-V supply at 26-MHz output and achieves a tuning range of 18.2-29.2 MHz with a sufficient overlap between tuning curves. The phase noise of -104 dBc/Hz at 1 MHz offset is measured at 26-MHz output frequency. When the supply voltage of 0.5 V is used, the DCRXO consumes 59 μW at 100-MHz output with the tuning range of 43.5-152 MHz. The core area of the DCRXO is 0.0362 mm2.

Abstract:This paper introduces an innovative two-stage distributed RC oscillator design, enhancing the noise performance and frequency stability for compact electronic devices. This work significantly reduces the comparator noise and improves system reliability by implementing a novel approach to increase the signal transition slope, coupled with optimized resistor and capacitor configurations. The study employs a quadrature oscillator topology and a precise reference voltage generation method, effectively addressing the challenges of mismatch and noise performance. A 469.2 kHz quadrature oscillator with two-stage distributed RC is implemented with a 0.18 μm CMOS process, achieving a FoM of −160 dBc/Hz at 100 Hz with a stable −20 dB roll-off in the phase noise and an Allan deviation floor of less than 0.7 ppm.

Abstract:An on-chip high accuracy fully integrated relaxation oscillator was designed based on average-voltage-feedback technology, which overcame the traditional relaxation oscillator’s sensitivity to comparator delay, device aging, and flicker noise. In addition, a one-time automatic frequency calibration circuit was designed, which could make the oscillator achieve high accuracy frequency with the help of an external reference clock. Based on UMC 40 nm CMOS process, a 50 MHz high accuracy fully integrated relaxation oscillator was implemented, and the layout and post simulation results of the oscillator were also provided. The core area of the oscillator was 181 μm×218 μm. The post-simulation results show that the presented oscillator can calibrate automatically the output frequency to 50 MHz under different process corners, and the output frequency error is only ±0.47% when the supply voltage changes from 2.2 V to 3.6 V and the temperature changes from-40 ℃ to 125 ℃. Under a typical corner, the power consumption of the oscillator is only 200 μW.

Abstract:This paper presents a dual-phase RC-based relaxation oscillator (RxO) with low temperature coefficient (TC) and high power efficiency achieved simultaneously for energyconstrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications with burstmode requirements. Its circuit-level event-driven architecture reduces the duty cycle of power-hungry blocks, saving power while posing little performance penalty. In addition, the charge reuse technique further reduces the power consumption for the always-on detecting circuit. Implemented in a 0.18- mu m CMOS process, the 180-kHz relaxation oscillator exhibits a frequency deviation of +/- 0.26% against temperature (-40 to 125 degrees C) from Monte-Carlo simulation (N=30), leading to a low temperature coefficient of 32 ppm/degrees C. The simulated power consumption is 163 nW, resulting in power efficiency of 0.9 nW/kHz.

Abstract:We describe an undergraduate project to build a Duffing oscillator. Although the ultimate goal was to demonstrate chaos, the overriding consideration was cost, as this was during COVID-19, and budgets were frozen. Previous designs used expensive parts that were out of the question in terms of cost. An inexpensive design whose centerpiece is a video tracking system is presented, along with some comments about aspects of the theory concerning the bi-stable case.

Abstract:A 9.4 MHz single-port RC oscillator is introduced using 0.18 μm CMOS technology, which can be applied in cryogenic medical instruments. By combining a comparator with negative resistors and optimizing temperature coefficients of composite resistors, we are able to reduce the sensitivity of frequency to temperature. The proposed oscillator improves the stability of the frequency without significant increase in area, occupying only 0.011 mm². The measured frequency variation is less than ±0.5% from -65°C to 25°C and ±0.35% from 3.8V to 4.2V.

Abstract:This work presents a low-power, low-temperature-coefficient (TC), digital-friendly RC relaxation oscillator (RxO) for energy-constrained Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications. Implemented in a 22nm CMOS technology that offers only PTAT resistors, the proposed swing-adaptive scheme compensates the first-order TC within the RC stage. Additionally, a clock-gated discrete-time comparator (DT-CMP) scheme is adopted to relax the trade-off between power efficiency and TC. The prototype RxO is measured to have a reference frequency of 700kHz with a TC of 12. $5\mathrm{p}\mathrm{p}\mathrm{m}/{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ (from -$40{}^{\circ}\mathrm{C}$ to 85°C), consuming 760nW with a power efficiency of 1.086nW/kHz.
