Based on the analysis of heat transfer process in AC contactor, a thermal model is proposed and the temperature field distribution is simulated with 3-D FEM of ANSYS.Comparison of simulation results with measurements shows that the proposed method is effective.

Abstract:Using the techniques of visual simulation of ANSYS,the thermal simulation of a typical AC contactor was achieved.This contactor has a single heat source(the electrical contact group),and the major modeling steps are: 3D model building,finite elements division,preprocess(including element types,material properties,contact conditions,etc),loading constraints(including tension,current,atmosphere convections,etc) and post-process data analysis.The simulation result shows that the highest temperature appears at the region of contact,the temperature results have a tiny difference between Ag and Ag composite Ag(SnO2)7(In2O3)3,and the rise of temperature rests in the safety operating temperature range.

Abstract:The electromagnetic-circuital-thermal co-simulation method is introduced for integrated circuits and microwave applications. The time domain numerical method is adopted for electromagnetic and thermal simulation. The equivalent circuit model, equivalent physical model and the behavior macromodel are utilized for circuit modeling. Coupling interfaces are constructed for electromagnetic-circuital-thermal co-simulation. Numerical examples are given to validate the proposed method.

Abstract:A simple and efficient model is proposed to detect and diagnose the internal short-circuit fault of a transformer.The winding's structure is preciously modeled for FEM.It is easy to be used for a transformer with internal turn-turn fault.Energy perturbation method is employed to calculate the equivalent circuit parameters of the transformer.With these parameters,state equations can be established to study the relationship among the terminal currents,flux and the fault locations.Through test of a transformer,it reveals that the method is reasonable and effective.

Abstract:The dynamical behavior of temperature is becoming a critical design consideration for the power electronics, because they are referred as "thermal cycling" which is the root cause of fatigues in the power electronics devices, and thus is closely related to the reliability of the converter. It is well understood that the loading of power devices are disturbed by many factors of the converter system like grid, control, environment, etc., which emerge at various time-constants. However, the corresponding thermal response to these disturbances is still unclear, especially the transient behaviors until achieving the steady-state. As a result, a systematic modelling approach is proposed in this paper, which includes the large signal models of the converter system with both electrical and thermal parts, and the corresponding transient models under frequency domain are also extracted. Based on the proposed models, the bandwidths of the loss or thermal response to major disturbances in the converter system can be analytically mapped, enabling more advanced tools to investigate the transient characteristics of loss and thermal dynamics in the power electronics devices.

Abstract:An electromagnetic-thermal co-simulation method is proposed for microstrip filter in this paper. The Maxwell equation is solved by discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method, while thermal simulation is carried out based on finite-element time-domain (FETD) method. Electromagnetic and thermal simulations are coupled by power loss and temperature-dependent conductivity. At last, the method is applied to analyze the microstrip low-pass filter.

Abstract:In this paper, a design method for the power source of a multiphase inductor to realize certain temperature distribution in electromagnetism induction heating is presented. Firstly, physical model is built. Then hybrid analytic and FE method is proposed to estimate the voltages applied on multiphase inductor. Magnetic-thermal coupled Finite Element analysis is used as the basic facility of temperature computation. Finally, optimization algorithm is utilized to adjust the source voltages and heating break time automatically to obtain the aimed temperature distribution in the heating billet.

Abstract:Present thermal models for analyzing the thermo or thermo-mechanical characteristics of machine tools either neglect the effect of thermal contact resistance (TCR) between rough solid surfaces or neglect the asperities' long transition process from elastic deformation to plastic one in calculating TCR, which cannot reflect real engineering practice. To improve the simulation accuracy of the thermo-mechanical characteristics of a high-speed actuating mechanism, a new TCR model is proposed considering the multiple deformation states of asperities including elastic, elastic-plastic and plastic deformations. The formulae for calculating the heat generation powers at bearings and the convective heat transfer coefficients are also proposed. The validity of the proposed thermal model is verified by a comparison analysis of the simulated and measured transient temperatures at a series of measurement points. Finally, both the transient and steady thermo-mechanical coupling characteristics of the high-speed actuating mechanism are analyzed by integrating the force loads and the thermal loads obtained by the proposed thermal model, which provide a theoretical basis for the further optimization of the mechanism's structural parameters and lubrication system.

Abstract:Because of the high prices and difficulties to conduct short-current tests of large power transformers, it is meaningful to analyze the dynamic electromagnetic force analysis of the transformer windings through finite element software. Research in this paper presents a model of the 50000MVA/110KV three phase transformer established by COMSOL. Different conditions of short-circuit current are applied to the model, testing the dynamic electromagnetic forces of the transformer windings. Results of the paper may be useful for investigating the winding deformation state prediction.

Abstract:Accurately understanding the temperature field distribution and hot-spot temperature of oil-immersed transformers is of great significance for ensuring the safe and stable operation of the transformer. A magnetic-thermal-flow coupling simulation model for oil-immersed transformer is established in this paper. In order to better simulate the heat dissipation process of the transformer, the winding uses a pie shaped structure with interval arrangement instead of the traditional cylindrical structure. The losses of iron core and winding are calculated through magnetic field simulation. Then, the losses are used as heat source for coupling simulation of thermal field and laminar flow to obtain the oil flow distribution, 3-D temperature field distribution, and temperature and location distribution of hot-spot. Finally, coupling simulations are conducted under different load currents to analyze the impact of load currents on the temperature and location of transformer hotspots. The simulation results show that as the current increases, the hot-spot temperature increases. When the load current changes, the hot-spot fluctuates within the range of 85% - 90% of the total height of the low-voltage winding, providing a methodological basis for the maintenance of transformers and monitoring of hot-spot temperatures.

Abstract:This paper first used CFD model to accurately estimate the thermal convection coefficient under different working conditions and fitted the losses of permanent magnet synchronous motors under different working conditions using formulas, and an equivalent thermal network model was established to analyze the temperature of the motor under different working conditions. Finally, an inner-mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor with 4-poles and 24-slots was used as the prototype, and the simulated temperature results were compared with real temperature datas. The results indicate that this method can accurately predict the temperature of the motor under different working conditions.

Abstract:As a core component of the power electronic transformer (PET) in DC network, the multi-level high-frequency power transformer has received great attention due to the insulation material fatigue problems resulting from the hot-spot temperature rises. To solve this problem, a three-winding high-frequency transformer for 10 kVA PET application is designed and made in the laboratory, and the loss and temperature rise distribution is calculated by means of the finite element (FE) electromagnetic-thermal coupling simulation. The influence of temperature on the hysteresis and loss properties of core material has been carefully considered and measured. The influence of skin effect and end effect on the winding loss is taken into account through the establishing three-dimensional FE model. Besides, the convective heat transfer coefficient is solved based on the principle of heat transfer instead of the empirical coefficient method. By compared with the experimental results, the calculated results are validated to be effective in predicting the loss and hot-spot temperature rises of the transformer.

Abstract:Thermal analysis is exceptionally important for operation safety of axial permanent magnet couplings (APMCs). Combining a finite element method (FEM) with a lumped-parameter thermal network (LPTN) is an effective yet simple thermal analysis strategy for an APMC that is developed in this paper. Also, some assumptions and key considerations are firstly given before analysis. The loss, as well as the magnetic field distribution of the conductor sheet (CS) can be accurately calculated through FEM. Then, the loss treated as source node loss is introduced into the LPTN model to obtain the temperature results of APMCs, where adjusting conductivity of the CS is a necessary and significant link to complete an iterative calculation process. Compared with experiment results, this thermal analysis strategy has good consistency. In addition, a limiting and safe slip speed can be determined based on the demagnetization temperature permanent magnet (PM).

Abstract:To improve the computational efficiency of the numerical methods for calculating ac loss in HTS motor, a new method called ‘Boundary field method’ is proposed in this article. This method combines the strength of ANSYS and COMSOL, which can reduce the complexity of modeling and computation time. In this article, three finite-element method based models, as case studies, were developed for a 100-kW superconducting induction motor. Model A models entire motor in COMSOL using A-H formulation, considering nonlinear E–J relationship of high temperature superconducting tapes, which can calculate ac loss of motor directly; Combining another two models: Model B (the same entire superconducting motor in ANSYS) and model C (only superconducting stator windings in COMSOL) can achieve new method for calculating ac loss. The AC loss calculation error between two methods for two-layer windings in one slot is 2.5% and 7%, respectively. These results conclude the effectiveness and accuracy of “boundary field method.” More importantly, the computation time reduces dramatically from 48 hours in Model A to only 2 hours for proposed approach. This accurate and computationally efficient new numerical modeling approach could be used to calculate ac loss in various types of superconducting applications in future.

Abstract:In order to better understand the temperature distribution of sealed electromechanical relay and its influence factors, a new modeling“space-filling-model”is introduced in this paper. The model can use one meshing model to simulate both close and open status through modifying the parameters of the filling material. Using software ANSYS, the paper simulates the transient temperature field of sealed electromechanical relay in the repeated short-term system. According to the calculation, the distribution of transient temperature field and its influence factors are summarized. Besides, the paper gives the relationship between the main heat source inside the relay and the current level. Finally, the paper puts forward an optimization method to decrease the temperature rise of the relay.

Abstract:Reliable calculation model of electromagnetic mechanism characteristics of DC contactor is of great significance to its structural optimization. In this paper, the excitation process of contactor magnet is summarized, and a new calculation model of hysteresis-finite element method is proposed. It can effectively calculate the remanence of the electromagnetic mechanism under different excitation conditions, and give the relationship curve between the remanence flux and the anti-remanence gap.

Abstract:Electrical contacts involve complicated electrical, thermal, and mechanical phenomena. Fretting wear as a surface damage mechanism significantly weakens the performance of electrical contact components. In this study, a numerical approach is developed to investigate the electrical-thermal-mechanical-wear coupling behavior of electrical contacts. An electrical contact conductance law is used with the current conservation model to evaluate the electrical behavior. A transient heat transfer model, including the Joule heating behavior and a thermal contact conductance law, is employed to calculate the temperature field. Both contact conductance laws are related to the contact pressure distribution obtained by the contact stress analysis. Based on the predicted contact stress and relative slip on contact surfaces, the energy wear model is used to study the evolution of fretting wear depth and contact surface geometry. The material properties in these models are temperature-dependent. The proposed numerical approach is implemented in a finite element modeling of electrical contacts, which is validated by comparing the predicted and experimental results of the wear scar profile. The effects of the fretting wear on the electric potential, current density, contact resistance, temperature, and contact pressure are numerically studied.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental validation of a numerical model of coupled processes within a three-phase medium-power dry-type electrical transformer. The analysis carried out employed a multi-disciplinary approach involving heat, fluid flow and electromagnetics. The thermal and fluid flow analysis was coupled with an electromagnetic model in order to examine the specific power losses within the coils and the core. The thermal boundary conditions, i.e. the local and temperature-dependent heat fluxes, were computed by considering a numerical model of the surrounding internal and external air. Moreover, separate numerical and analytical models were considered in order to obtain the anisotropic thermal conductivities for different types of coils and also for laminated cores. To validate the numerical model, experimental transformer temperature tests in the short-circuit, open-circuit, and under nominal parameters according to the current European Standards for dry-type transformers were performed. During the tests, temperatures were measured at selected points on elements of the transformer using thermocouples and thermometers, while on the external tank walls an infrared thermography was employed. The obtained numerical results showed that the prediction of the temperature distribution within the analyzed transformers and their surroundings was very accurate.
