Abstract:Various methods to overcome the difficulties in the fabrication of high-quality (Q) optical nanofiber microcoil resonators are investigated. Modifications of the resonator geometry by wrapping the nanofiber over nonuniform rods and/or by varying the pitch alter the resonator Q-factor significantly. These effects are quantified, and geometries, which allow for enhanced tolerance to fabrication uncertainties, are identified. These simulations apply equally to the fabrication of high-Q microcoil resonators with nanofibers suspended in air or embedded in low-refractive-index materials.

Abstract:Microresonators of ultrahigh quality (Q) factors represent a crucial type of photonic devices aiming at ultra-high spectral resolution, ultra-high sensitivity to the environmental perturbations, and efficient nonlinear wavelength conversions at low threshold pump powers. Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) microdisks of high Q factors are particularly attractive due to its large second-order nonlinear coefficient and strong electro-optic property. In this letter, we break through the long standing bottleneck in achieving the Q factors of LNOI microresonators beyond 108, which approaches the intrinsic material absorption limit of lithium niobate (LN). The ultra-high Q factors give rise to a rich family of nonlinear optical phenomena from optical parametric oscillation (OPO) to harmonics generation with unprecedented characteristics including ultra-low pump threshold, high wavelength conversion efficiency, and ultra-broad operation bandwidth. Specifically, the threshold of OPO is measured to be only 19.6 μW, and the absolute conversion efficiency observed in the second harmonic generation reaches 23%. The record-breaking performances of the on-chip ultra-high Q LNOI microresonators will have profound implication for both photonic research and industry.
A Simple Approach to Fiber-Based Tunable Microcavity with High Coupling Efficiency

Abstract:We report a simple technique for the realization of fiber-based Fabry-Pérot microcavities with large Q/V values as well as high cavity-to-fiber coupling efficiencies. The open microcavity we demonstrate consists of a flat mirror and a concave mirror on the tip of a single mode optical fiber. Combining hydrofluoric acid chemical wet etching with CO2 laser reflow, we obtain a fiber-tip atomically smooth concave surface with a diameter of 4.7 μm determined by the fiber core size. The concave surface with a spherical profile is automatically aligned with the fiber core, which enables high cavity-to-fiber power coupling efficiency (higher than 90%) with an optimal fiber-tip mirror's radius of curvature based on numerical simulation results. After distributed-Bragg-reflector coating, we have realized a wavelength-tunable open microcavity with a quality factor Q exceeding 1000 and a mode volume V of 13.6 μm3, and laser emission is demonstrated from this microcavity.

Abstract:The dependence of the Q-factor of the microfiber coil resonator on different input/output couplings is investigated and compared. A method of slowly varying input/output coupling is presented to considerably simplify the fabrication of high-Q resonators. The microfiber coil resonator (MCR) is a promising functional device for compact all-fiber circuits. I n particular, with the most recent developments in th e manufacturing technology of ultra-low loss microf ibers (1- 3), MCRs could potentially compete with the highest Q-factors currently achieved only in whispering ga llery resonators (4). An MCR can be created by wrapping an optical microfiber on a low-index dielectric rod and its geometry cannot be achieved by planar technology. However this type of resonator presents a grave issu e: the extremely high sensitivity of the Q-factor to the c oupling strength, which in turn has an exponential relation with the pitch. If ultra-high Q-factors can be achieved over a large range of coupling coefficients, the ma nufacture of high-Q MCRs is considerably simplified. In this pap er we present a simple method to achieve high-Q MCRs over a wide range of coupling coefficients by tunin g the coupling between the coil and the input and o utput pigtails. Our analysis of the MCR is based on the solution of coupled wave equations. Consider the propagation of light along an MCR, as illustrated in Fig.1. Along the fiber, we define the amplitude of the field at the mth turn as Am(θ), 0 < θ <2π. Ignoring coupling between turns that are not adja cent to each other, the propagation of light along the coil in a M-turn MCR is described by the coupled wave equations for slowly varying pitches (5,6): where K( ϕ) is the coupling coefficient (5) between neighboring turns along the coil and ϕ=θ +( m-1)·2 π. K assumes values between 0 (no coupling) and KM (maximum coupling for touching fibers). Field cont inuity between the turns implies that Am+1 (0)=A m(2 π)exp(i2R πβ), m=1,2…M-1, where β is the propagation constant and R is the coil radius. The amplitude transmission coe fficient is defined as T=A M(2 π)/A 1(0)exp(i2R πβ) and the Q- factor as Q= λ0/∆λ, where ∆λ is the full width at half maximum (FWHM) of resonances in T. Fig. 2 shows the dependence of the FWHM on constant K(ϕ)=K near λ0≈1.55 μm for a MCR with M= 4. The microfiber is assumed to have 800nm radius, 0.02dB/mm loss and R=125/2 �m. The FWHM fluctuates widely. Therefore, high Q-factors cannot be obtained simply by targeting the highest K, i.e. by making two adjacent turns touching. In principle, the highest Q-factor can be achieved by selecting a K for which the FWHM is minimized, but in practice this is difficult to rea lize because K is very sensitive to the distance between adjacent turns. For the ease of fabrication it is therefore desirable that the FWHM is at its minimum and changes slowly with K. Abstract:Optical resonators with high-quality factors (Q-factor) constitute the main building block for many photonic devices capitalizing on light-matter interactions, ranging from light emitters to biochemical sensors. While a high Q-factor enhances light-matter interactions, it also limits the device operation bandwidth. Here we propose and numerically analyze a generic coupling scheme to overcome the apparent trade-off. By using an orthogonal grating, broadband optical coupling into high-Q cavities of diverse geometric configurations can be achieved. As an example, the approach is applied to demonstrate over a 28-fold optical absorption enhancement across a 150 nm band around 900 nm wavelength in single-layer graphene embedded inside a Fabry-Perot cavity.

Abstract:Based on low-loss fusion splicing of microfibers using a CO laser, we demonstrate free-standing microfiber closed-loop resonators. Loaded Q-factors of 110 500 with a finesse of 15.3 are obtained around 1.5-mu m wavelength in a 2.4-mm-diameter closed-loop resonator suspended in air. The possibility of tuning resonant responses by changing the coupling efficiency is also demonstrated.

Abstract:The manufacture of tapers from optical fibers provides the possibility to get long, uniform, and robust micrometer- or nanometer-size wires. Optical microfibers are fabricated by adiabatically stretching conventional optical fibers and thus preserve the original optical fiber dimensions at their input/output pigtails, allowing ready splicing to standard fibers. Since microfibers have a size comparable to the wavelength of the light propagating in it, a considerable fraction of power can be located in the evanescent field, outside the microfiber physical boundary. When a microfiber is coiled, the mode propagating in it interferes with itself to give a resonator. In this chapter the latest results on the manufacture of optical microfiber resonators are presented. Optical microfibers can be used to fabricate single-loop and multiple-loop (coil) resonators with extremely high Q factors. High Q resonators can be used for refractometric biosensors and because of their design they provide an exceptionally high sensitivity.

Abstract:The dispersion characteristics of an optical nanowire microcoil resonator (ONMR) are investigated, which show remarkable influence on their performances at a high bitrate. In addition to the waveguide dispersion it was found that the adjacent ring coupling also has notable contribution to the total dispersion. If the nanowire diameter's range is from 1.5 to 5 mu m, the waveguide dispersion and coupling dispersion could almost be canceled with each other so that the total dispersion is well suppressed, which is desired in high-speed (10 Gb/s and beyond) optical systems. On the other hand, both positive and negative dispersion could be obtained by adjusting suitable ONMR parameters. Even a tailored dispersion curve could be designed theoretically. These results are helpful for ONMR-based device design in communication and sensing applications.

Abstract:High index dielectric nanostructure supports different types of resonant modes. However, it is very challenging to achieve high-Q factor in a single subwavelength dielectric nanoresonator due to non-hermtian property of the open system. Here, we present a universal approach of finding out a series of high-Q resonant modes in a single nonspherical dielectric nanocavity by exploring quasi-bound state in the continuum. Unlike conventional method relying on heavy computation (ie, frequency scanning by FDTD), our approach is built upon leaky mode engineering, through which many high-Q modes can be easily achieved by constructing avoid-crossing (or crossing) of the eigenvalue for pair leaky modes. The Q-factor can be up to 2.3*10^4 for square subwavelength nanowire (NW) (n=4), which is 64 times larger than the highest Q-factor (Q=360) reported so far in single subwavelength nanodisk. Such high-Q modes can be attributed to suppressed radiation in the corresponding eigenchannels and simultaneously quenched electric(magnetic) at momentum space. As a proof of concept, we experimentally demonstrate the emergence of the high-Q resonant modes (Q=380) in the scattering spectrum of a single silicon subwavelength nanowire.
High Q-factor reconfigurable microresonators induced in side-coupled optical fibres

Abstract:High Q-factor monolithic optical microresonators found numerous applications in classical and quantum optical signal processing, microwave photonics, ultraprecise sensing, as well as fundamental optical and physical sciences. However, due to the solid structure of these microresonators, attaining the free spectral range tunability of most of them, critical for several of these applications, was, so far, unfeasible. To address this problem, here we experimentally demonstrate that the side-coupling of coplanar bent optical fibres can induce a high Q-factor whispering gallery mode optical microresonator. By changing the curvature radius of fibres from the centimetre order to the millimetre order, we demonstrate fully mechanically reconfigurable optical microresonators with dimensions varying from the millimetre order to 100-micron order and free spectral range varying from a picometre to ten picometre order. The developed theory describes the formation of the discovered microresonators and their major properties in a reasonable agreement with the experimental data. The new microresonators may find applications in cavity QED, microresonator optomechanics, frequency comb generation with tuneable repetition rate, tuneable lasing, and tuneable processing and delay of optical pulses.

Abstract:Optical microcavities are essential in numerous technologies and scientific disciplines. However, their application in many areas relies exclusively upon discrete microcavities in order to satisfy challenging combinations of ultra-low-loss performance (high cavity-Q-factor) and cavity design requirements. Indeed, finding a microfabrication bridge connecting ultra-high-Q device functions with micro and nanophotonic circuits has been a long-term priority of the microcavity field. Here, an integrated ridge resonator having a record Q factor over 200 million is presented. Its ultra-low-loss and flexible cavity design brings performance that has been the exclusive domain of discrete silica and crytalline microcavity devices to integrated systems. Two distinctly different devices are demonstrated: soliton sources with electronic repetition rates and high-coherence Brillouin lasers. This multi-device capability and performance from a single integrated cavity platform represents a critical advance for future nanophotonic circuits and systems.

Abstract:In this study, we experimentally and theoretically demonstrate electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like in a single conical microresonator (CMR) fabricated by combining arc discharge and pull method. Benefited from the gradually changing diameter along the longitudinal axis of the CMR, the resonance frequency can be tuned when the CMR coupled by a tapered fiber waveguide. The characteristic of internally-tuning in our CMR is confirmed theoretically, numerically and experimentally. In particular, Fano and EIT-like effect with a quality (Q) factor are achieved by scanning the varied diameter carefully originating from approximate two resonant frequencies in a wavelength apart. In addition, these experimental observations can be well fitted with the coupled mode theory. These findings may open new avenues for realizing high-Q EIT, which pave the way for an enhanced approach in bio-sensing applications, nonlinear optics and optical switching devices.

Abstract:We proposed a novel approach to confine light in a silica microfiber (MF) cavity using a lattice constant-varying nanohole array. In our simulation study, the MF cavity is integrated with the optimally designed nanostructure, and produces Q-factors as high as 7 x 10(5) in the near-infrared region. The mode volume of the cavity remains close to lambda(3)(e), a much smaller value than those previously reported for MF-based high-Qresonant structures. Our MF cavity with enhanced performance should find many potential applications in fiber lasers, nonlinear fiber optics, cavity quantum electrodynamics (QED), and cavity optomechanics.

Abstract:We demonstrate the design, fabrication, and characterization of side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities in silicon-on-insulator platform. Results show that repeatable devices achieve similar high loaded quality factors (>10(4)) and large optical energy ratio in low refractive region. The unload Q-factors of the fabricated cavities are estimated to exceed 10(5). With side-coupled configuration, high transmission of through port is achieved with typical insertion loss less than 0.5 dB. Wavelength shifts of the measured resonances with respect to the designed values are observed and well explained by considering the fluctuation of etching depth. The demonstrated side-coupled airmode nanobeam photonic crystal cavities may find their applications in ultracompact integrated photonics, especially for on-chip photonic sensor, notch filter, or optical switch.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate experimentally an ultracompact resonant system exhibiting sharp asymmetric Fano-resonance, in which a tiny photonic crystal nanobeam cavity is laterally coupled to a waveguide Fabry-Perot resonator. Under the presence of cavity intrinsic loss, we find that the system produces sharper and higher extinction ratio Fano resonance spectra only if appropriate phase is selected. The whole device (∼6 μm2) is implemented on silicon on insulator platform, and experimentally we observe steep-slope Fano resonance with extinction ratio of 7.3 dB, slope above 5 dB/nm, and average insertion loss less than 1.8 dB.
