Abstract:The electrochromic characteristics of titanium oxide films prepared by reactive thermal evaporation and ion-assisted deposition have been investigated. It is found that their properties depend on the deposition and post-annealing process, and there is slight conflict between charge capacity and cyclic stability. With a compromise, a TiO2 film with above 7.6 mC cm(-2) Li+ ion capacity and above 10(6) color/bleach cycles is gained. The film is deposited at 50 similar to 80 degrees C substrate temperature and 250 similar to 260 degrees C post-annealing in an oxidizing atmosphere. With the post-annealed TiO2 film as the counter electrode, durable electrochromic devices, glass/ITO/TiO2/PPG-PMMA-LiClO4/WOx/ITO, are obtained. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science S.A.

Abstract:Thin amorphous films of tungsten oxide form the basic for a passive electrichromic device, in which a film is colored blue by simultanous injection of ions and electrons. Tungsten oxide films are usually used as a electrochromic(EC) layer. In this paper, two kinds of amorphous tungsten oxide films are made by thermal evaporation. One shows high color efficiency, and is good for EC layer use. The other shows low color efficiency but high ion injected charge, and is good for counter–electrode(CE), A qusi–symmetry electrochromic device is made by using this two different amorphous tungsten oxide films.

Abstract:Recently, electrochromic thin films and thin film devices have attracted more and more interest because of strong possibility to act as smart windows and smart glass that may be widely used in the daily life[1]. The electrochromic thin film devices usually have a five layers structure: an actual electrochromic layer, an ionic conductor and an ion storage layer are sandwiched between two outer transparent electrical conductive layers, WO3 film is used as the actual electrochromic films in the general studies. The coloration and bleaching are accomplished when positive ions (Li+, H+ etc. )are moved from the ion storage, via the ionic conductor, into the electrochromic layer, or in the inverse direction. Currently, the electrochromic thin films or thin film devices are characterized by electrochemical analysis and optical spectral transmittance measurement. In fact, the electrochromic effect is a spectral absorption modulation, the investigation of the optical absorption variation during the electrochromic process may offer us more information about the process.

Abstract:Ion trapping and detrapping in amorphous titanium oxide is demonstrated. It is found that α‐, β‐, and modified α‐traps are the keys resulting in the electrochromic degradation. Importantly, ions resided in all kinds of traps can also be released through a detrapping process, therefore the initial electrochromic performance can be restored accordingly. Electrochromic performance fading is inevitable upon extended cycling, and the limited lifetime greatly prevents large‐scale commercialization of electrochromism‐based devices. Here the origin of the performance degradation is uncovered and the performance restoration in TiO2 thin films is explored. It is shown that, depending on the applied potential windows, the inserted ions are immobilized in α‐traps resulting in a monotonous degradation of colored state, or immobilized in b‐ and modified α‐traps leading to mutual degradation of colored and bleached state of the films. It is found by releasing the resided ions in various traps, the initial performance can be restored accordingly. Moreover, reversible sites and all traps are demonstrated to be interconvertible through an ion trapping and detrapping process. These results provide a general scope in understanding the electrochromism in oxide thin films and offer the scheme for potential traps control or even elimination, aiming at superior electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) draw great attention in developing electrochromic devices due to its low cost, dual-band optical modulation and wide potential window complementary to other EC films. Akin to other electrochromic oxides, TiO 2 suffers from the tradeoff between cycling stability and large optical modulation because of the ion trapping effect. In this paper, we find formation of β-traps can be prevented through adjusting the applied duration time at high potential, thus β-traps induced bleached state degradation in amorphous TiO 2 films can be eradicated. More importantly, we show the formed β-traps locate at the TiO 2 /electrolyte interface, and are independent of the employed electrolyte systems. The TiO 2 based full electrochromic devices confirm β-traps can be suppressed in a full device fashion. This work paves the way to understand the electrochromic performance degradation for oxide films upon square wave cycling and lays the foundation for adaptation in EC devices.

Abstract:TiO2 nanocrystals embedded amorphous WO3 electrochromic films have been successfully fabricated with a facile one-step solution process. The structure and electrochromic properties of composite films were studied by transmission electron microscope, scanning electron microscope, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and electrochemical methods. The results show that anatase TiO2 nanocrystals with a size of about 5-10 nm were homogeneously embedded in the amorphous WO3 matrix (TiO2@WO3). Compared with pure WO3 film, the electrochromic performances of TiO2@WO3 are evidently enhanced. The further electrochemical analysis indicates that the enhancement may be mainly ascribed to the reconstruction of amorphous WO3 matrix with the emerging interfaces between nanocrystals and amorphous matrix. And the extremely high value of the coloration/bleaching reversibility is associated with the suppressing effect of TiO2 nanocrystals upon the Li+ trapping in WO3 matrix. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Electrochromic technologies have recently attracted attention due to their energy-saving performance for reducing green gas emissions. The materials design and preparation of electrochromic materials with sufficient microstructure and crystallographic features for suitable ion intercalation/deintercalation are essential for high performance and efficiency. In the present work, nanostructured amorphous tungsten trioxide (WO 3 ) films are electrodeposited to enhance electrochromic properties by controlling the pH of electrolytes. Electron microscopy and spectroelectrochemical analysis demonstrate that smaller grain sizes result in larger electrochemical reactive surface areas and shorter ion diffusion lengths. Consequently, the ions efficiently intercalated and deintercalated during the coloring and bleaching states, respectively. In particular, prepared WO 3 films at electrolyte pH 1.4 demonstrate high optical modulation (74.83%) and good transmittance switching speeds (1.56 and 2.06 s during coloring and bleaching, respectively) at 650 nm, as well as comparable coloration efficiency (61.92 cm 2 C −1 at 650 nm).

Abstract:Electrochromic devices are applied extensively to camouflages, smart windows, heat insulation layers, and automobile rearview mirrors, etc. The amorphous WO 3 is a very attractive electrochromic material, whereas it suffers from degradation of optical modulation and reversibility on ion exchange owing to those deep trapped ions with irreversible reaction behavior. Herein, we designed and, by using magnetron sputtering, prepared a composite film with TiO 2 /WO 3 /TiO 2 double heterojunctions, which is capable of eliminating the deep trapped ions by itself under ultraviolet light (UV) assistance. The electrochromic device based on this composite film, after being recovery by short-time UV irradiation, can maintain a high transmission modulation of 94.72% after 7000 cycles of the voltammetry measurement. This feature allows the device to maintain its initial electrochromic performance after prolonged use. Moreover, the double heterojunction structure can reduce colouring time and enormously improve the colouration efficiency (CE) of electrochromic devices. Experimental research shows that when the thickness of the bottom and upper TiO 2 layer of the WO 3 film was 145.5 nm and 97.0 nm, respectively, the CE of electrochromic devices reached a perfectly high value (479.3 cm 2 /C), being much higher than that of WO 3 devices (69.5 cm 2 /C). Functions of the TiO 2 /WO 3 /TiO 2 double heterojunction in electrochromic device were investigated by combining theoretical analysis and experiment validation, and these results provide a general framework for developing and designing superior electrochromic materials and devices.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO2) nano-rod thin film was successfully synthesized via hydrothermal method on fluorine doped tinoxide (FTO) coated transparent conductive glass substrate. Then, three donor-acceptor polymers based on 2, 1, 3-benzothiadiazole or perylenediimide have been electropolymerized on TiO2 nano-film to form organic-inorganic hybrid films. XRD, FTIR and SEM characterizations confirm the coupling of polymer and TiO2 nano-film, and the hybrid films present loose and porous morphology. After investigating the electrochromic properties of these hybrid films, the results indicate that the composite films display similar optical absorption with the pure polymer films, while improved switching response and stability of these hybrid films have been achieved. These improved electrochromic properties can be attributed to the formation of the donor-acceptor system, and loose, porous morphology of the nanocomposite, which will induce fast ion diffusion and provide large surface area for charge–transfer reactions.
Effect of In Situ Heating on the Growth and Electrochromic Properties of Tungsten Trioxide Thin Films

Abstract:Electrochromism has emerged as a pivotal technology in the pursuit of energy efficiency and environmental sustainability, spurring significant research efforts aimed at the creation of advanced electrochromic devices. Most electrochromic materials are used for smart window applications. However, current electrochromic materials have been applied to new energy vehicles, cell phone back covers, AR glasses, and so on. More application scenarios put forward more requirements for the color of the colored states. Choosing the right color change in the application will be the trend in the future. In this work, tungsten trioxide (WO3) thin films were prepared by adjusting the in situ heating temperature. WO3 with a crystalline structure showed excellent cyclic stability (5000 cycles), electrochromic performance (ΔT = 77.7% at 633 nm, CE = 37.1 cm2/C), relatively fast bleaching/coloring speed (20.0 s/19.4 s), and the darkest coloring effect (L* = 29.32, a* = 7.41, b* = -22.12 for the colored state). These findings offer valuable insights into the manipulation of smart materials and devices, contributing to the advancement of electrochromic technology.
Boosting the electrochromic performance of TiO 2 nanowire film via successively evolving surface structure

Abstract:Electrochromic transition metal oxides (ETMOs) are useful in energy saving devices and smart indicators. Among these ETMO candidates, titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is intriguing for its abundance and environmental safety, but the low color efficiency and slow coloring rate are still barricades to promote its electrochromic application. Herein, we demonstrate an amorphization strategy to comprehensively enhance the performance of TiO 2 nanowire film (TNF) via atomic layer deposition (ALD) of an additional TiO 2 conformal layer onto TNF surface, of which the layer structure evolves successively from ordered to disordered, achieving tunable electrochromism by controlling ALD cycles. Besides the remarkable increment of charging efficiency by ∼35% and color efficiency by ∼40%, bleached transmittance rectified optical density (BTR density) and ion diffusion coefficient are boosted by ∼90% and over 15 times, respectively for TNF deposited with 150 cycles. A large number of self-doped Ti 3+ defects and hydroxyl units together with order-disorder interconnections in the ALD TiO 2 layer are responsible for the performance enhancement. The concept for successively evolving surface structure shares the feasibility of upgrading conventional ETMOs as well as designing new electrochromic materials.
Amorphous‐Crystalline Interface Induced Internal Electric Fields for Electrochromic Smart Window

Abstract:TiO2 nanosheets with abundant amorphous/crystalline heterointerfaces (A/C‐TiO2) are constructed. The alignment of Fermi levels of amorphous and crystalline TiO2 domains can introduce an internal electric field and therefore reduce the diffusion energy barrier of Li+. Consequently, it shortens the response time and improves the coloration efficiency. Balancing optical modulation and response time is crucial for achieving high coloration efficiency in electrochromic materials. Here, internal electric fields are introduced to titanium dioxide nanosheets by constructing abundant amorphous‐crystalline interfaces, ensuring large optical modulation while reducing response time and therefore improving coloration efficiency. Aberration‐corrected high‐angle annular dark‐field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF‐STEM) reveals the presence of numerous amorphous‐crystalline phase boundaries in titanium dioxide nanosheets. Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) exhibits an intense surface potential distribution, demonstrating the presence of internal electric fields. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations confirm that the amorphous‐crystalline heterointerfaces can generate internal electric fields and reduce diffusion barriers of lithium ions. As a result, the amorphous‐crystalline titanium dioxide nanosheets exhibit better coloration efficiency (35.1 cm2 C−1) than pure amorphous and crystalline titanium dioxide nanosheets.

Abstract:Anatase TiO2 thin films with high optical modulation, better reversibility, fast switching time, and enhanced coloration efficiency were prepared by nebulized spray pyrolysis technique. X-ray diffraction study confirmed the formation of anatase phase TiO2 in the present work. This inference was substantiated from the Raman active modes of A1g, 2 B1g, and 3 Eg corresponding to O–Ti–O bond in TiO2. The PL emission peak observed at 400 nm is corresponds to the indirect transition (X1b → Γ3) from the conduction band to the valence band. The average reflectance of TiO2 thin films was varied from 31 to 20%. The electrochemical study revealed the excellent performance of TiO2 films with high optical modulation (ΔT = 61%), fast switching kinetics (tb = 1.6 s, tc = 2.4 s), good coloration efficiency (100 cm2 C−1), and better reversibility (86%). The efficient electrochromic behavior of films may be due to the smooth microstructure nature, which provides an easy pathway for the diffusion and charge transfer process of Li+ ions in TiO2 film matrix. The fast transfer of Li+ ion was realized from the electrochemical impedance spectroscopic measurement.

Abstract:Porous crystalline/amorphous TiO2 (c/a-TiO2) hybrid films have been successfully grown on FTO substrates via a solvothermal reaction followed by a simple air annealing treatment. By adjusting reaction temperature, the porous structure and the proportion of amorphous TiO2 phase can be feasibly modulated. The in-situ transformation of crystalline TiO2 from amorphous phase could ensure the optimal crystalline/amorphous interface contact. The obtained c/a-TiO2 hybrid films shows excellent electrochromic properties which can switch between green color and transparent state with large optical contrast (59.3%) at 700 nm, high coloration efficiency (24.3 cm2 C-1) and short switching time (bleaching time of 2.0 s and coloration time of 12.1 s). Due to the desired porous structure for short Li+ ions diffusion paths and crystalline/amorphous interface enables low energy barrier and fast ion migration during the insertion/extraction of Li+ ions, the c/a-TiO2 hybrid film not only exhibits lower threshold voltage (+0.2 ∼ -1.5 V vs Ag/AgCl) and faster response than single crystalline anatase TiO2 (c-TiO2) counterpart, but also owns higher coloration efficiency and better durability than single amorphous TiO2 (a-TiO2). Compared to the commonly blue color of c-TiO2, the success to gain green color by using the prepared c/a-TiO2 hybrid film makes it very attractive for constructing electrochromic devices. Our study here also offers an alternative way of designing TiO2-based nanostructures for high-efficiency electrochromic applications.

Abstract:Surface-fluorinated TiO2 nanocrystal (NC) films have been obtained on FTO substrates by the one-pot solvothermal reaction. It is found that the fluorine anions play a critical role in generating oxygen vacancies, and triggering the self-assembly of the NCs to form porous structures as well as modulating the NC sizes. Meanwhile, pristine TiO2 films show simultaneous electrochromic regulation behavior in the near-infrared and visible regions under electrochemical bias, which reveals that the surface-fluorinated TiO2 films demonstrate selective and independent modulation in the two regions with high optical modulation (77.5% at 700 nm and 62.5% at 1300 nm); unprecedentedly fast electrochromic response (coloring time of 12.8 s at 700 nm and 10.2 s at 1300 nm; bleaching time of 4.3 s at 700 nm and 4.8 s at 1300 nm); and superior cycling stability, respectively. The films also exhibit three typical energy efficient working modes and promising energy storage characteristics. In addition, the electrochromic reaction kinetics is scrutinized, and it is investigated that the effect of oxygen vacancies is of importance to realize NIR selective modulation. The present work may prove to provide an alternative approach for designing high performance TiO2-based single-component dual-band energy efficient electrochromic devices.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, electrochromism has been a prominent topic in energy-saving applications, which is based on the mechanism of altering the optical transmittance of EC materials under the effect of a small applied voltage. Thus, tungsten oxide (WO3) is a significant chemical compound typically applied in electrochromic devices (ECDs) as it is responsible for the optical transmittance variation. In this work, the WO3 films were produced through a sol–gel spin-coating method. The effect of various transparent conducting oxides (TCOs, which are indium-doped tin oxide (ITO), fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass substrates, and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO)) was investigated in the construction of ECDs. Based on a conducting polymer polypyrene carbonate electrolyte, ITO and aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO)-coated glasses were also examined as counter electrodes. The electrode combination employing FTO and ITO as the TCO and counter electrode, respectively, exhibited the most significant coloration efficiency of 72.53 cm2/C. It had coloring and bleaching transmittance of 14% and 56%, respectively, with a large optical modulation of 42%. In addition to that, ECDs with the AZO counter electrode have the advantage of lower intercalation charges compared to ITO and FTO. Hence, this research offers a new avenue for understanding the role of common TCO and counter electrodes in the development of WO3-based ECDs with conducting polymer electrolytes.

Retarding the Shuttling Ions in the Electrochromic TiO2 with Extensive Crystallographic Imperfections.

Abstract:AbstractTo understand the role of structure imperfections on the performance of electrochromic transition metal oxide (ETMO) is challenging for the design of efficient smart windows. Herein, we investigate the performance evolution with tunable crystallographic imperfections for rutile TiO2 nanowire film (TNF). Structure imperfections, originating mainly from the copious oxygen deficiency, are apt to cumulatively retard the shuttling ions, resulting in the response rate for raw TNF being less than the half that of TNF annealed at 500 °C. We describe ion accommodation sites as a convolution of normal site and abnormal site, in which the normal site performs reversible coloration but the abnormal site contributes only to charge storage, which gives a rationale for the non‐linear coloration and rate capability loss. These findings give a clear picture of the ion shuttling process, which is insightful for enhancing the electrochromic performance via structure reprogramming.

Abstract:Anodic material plays a vital role in electrochemical water treatment. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) has been widely recognized as an excellent semiconductor photocatalyst, rather than an efficient electrocatalyst, due to its relatively low electric conductivity and poor electrochemical activity. In this work, it is found that TiO2 can actually become a superior electrocatalyst when its crystal shape and exposed facet are finely tuned. The shape-engineered TiO2 single crystals with {001} facets exhibit an excellent electro-catalytic activity and stability for degrading typical organic pollutants such as rhodamine B and bisphenol A, and treating complex landfill leachate. Its electro-catalytic superiority is mainly attributed to the single-crystalline structure and exposed polar {001} facet. Our findings could provide new possibility of utilizing TiO2 for efficient electrochemical water treatment because of its high activity, great stability, low cost and no toxicity.
Electrochromic Properties of Nano-columnar Porous WO<sub>3-x</sub>/TiO<sub>2</sub> Thin Films

Abstract:Tungsten oxide (WO3-x) thin films were fabricated by reactive magnetron sputtering at glancing angle alpha=0 degrees or alpha=80 degrees, and then titanium oxide (TiO2) was deposited on it. X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were employed to characterize the crystal structure, surface/cross-section morphologies, and surface chemical composition of the WO3-x/TiO2 thin films. Electrochromic properties of the WO3-x/TiO2 thin films were measured by electrochemical workstation in three-electrode system with 1 mol/L LiClO4/PC solution and UV-Vis spectrophotometer. Results reveal that the WO3-x/TiO2 thin films present totally amorphous structure independent on glancing angles. As the glancing angle is kept at 80 degrees, the nano-columnar porous thin film is obtained. Substoichiometric tungsten oxide (WO3-x) and stoichiometric titanium oxide (TiO2) are confirmed by XPS spectra of W 4f and Ti 2p, respectively. Compared with the dense thin film, the nano-columnar porous film needs a lower driving potential and presents faster response. The charge capacity of the nano-columnar porous film is calculated to be 83.78 mC, which is over twice higher than 30.83 mC of the dense film. The intercalation and deintercalation ion diffusion rates are determined to be D-in=5.69x10(-10) cm(2).s(-1) and D-de=5.08x10(-10) cm(2).s(-1) at the applied potential +/- 1.2 V, respectively. The electrochromic cycle of the nano-columnar porous WO3-x/TiO2 thin film is more stable than that of pure WO3 thin film. The optical density variation (Delta OD) of the nano-columnar porous thin film is larger than that of the dense thin film due to the larger optical modulation amplitude in the whole visible wavelengths.
