Abstract:Optically transparent silica aerogel with high specific surface area and low density based on tetramethyl orthosilicate (TMOS) were prepared by using a two-step sol-gel process. Obtained aerogels are more transparent than conventional samples, and the refractive index is well controlled in the acetonitrile supercritical drying process. We developed monolithic aerogels with a density of 0.04g/cm 3 as space dust capturer. The microstructure and morphology of highly transparence silica aerogels were characterized by the specific surface area, SEM, UV-Vis and the pore size distribution techniques. The results shown that highly transparence silica aerogels are with excellent performance in physical properties, such as high optical transmittance (86.4%, 800 nm), low density (0.04 g/cm 3 ), high specific surface area (925.4 m /g) and large pore volume (2.4 cm 3 /g). Which are critical characteristics for practical applications of highly transparent silica aerogel, particularly in particle capture areas, for easy observation and lossless capture.

Abstract:Silica clusters were obtained by laser ablation time-of-flight mass spectrometry from fullerene-doped and carbon-doped silica aerogels, which can be explained by cluster assembly structure of silica aerogel and the doping conditions. The results reported here not only provide structural evidence for the proposed structure of silica aerogel, but also give a novel method to detect the cluster structures of aerogels.

Abstract:We report a novel method to synthesize silica aerogel composite by fibers using low cost sodium silicate as precursors, ceramics fibers as reinforced skeleton (15wt %), via ambient pressure drying process. To minimize shrinkage during drying, surfaces of wet silica aerogel were modified using trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) via one-step solvent exchange and surface modification. Composite SiO2 aerogels exhibited stable hydrophobic (contact angel about ~135° in room temperature), low density (0.196 g/cm3), high specific surface area (630 m2/g) and large pore volume (2.6cm3/g). Thermal conductivities at desired temperatures were analyzed by transient plane heat source method. Thermal conductivity coefficients of composite aerogel monoliths changed from 0.0266 to 0.0572 W/(m·K) as temperature increased to 400°C, revealed an excellent heat insulation effect during thermal process. Our work will be helpful to provide a general guide on how to commercial exploitation composite aerogel monoliths, which possessing 7.2cm diameters and have desirable structure and properties using in heat insulation environment.

Abstract:Hydrophobic silica aerogels with ultra-low densities have been designed and developed as cosmic dust capture media for the Tanpopo mission which is proposed to be carried out on the International Space Station. Glass particles as a simulated cosmic dust with 30 \mu m in diameter and 2.4 g/cm^3 in density were successfully captured by the novel aerogel at a velocity of 6 km/s. Background levels of contaminated DNA in the ultra-low density aerogel were lower than the detection limit of a polymerase chain reaction assay. These results show that the manufactured aerogel has good performance as a cosmic dust collector and sufficient quality in respect of DNA contamination. The aerogel is feasible for the biological analyses of captured cosmic dust particles in the astrobiological studies.

Abstract:Silica aerogels are applied extensively in thermal insulation due to their extra-low density and thermal conductivity. However, this can be heavily undermined under high temperature, especially beyond 700-800 degrees C, due to not only a high transparency for radiation heat transfer, but also an instability caused by nanoparticle collapse. The present study demonstrated a solution to this problem by two steps. Firstly, the size effect of nanoparticles is explored by experimentally preparing unconventional samples composed of large-diameter particles (larger than 20 nm). The prepared sample microstructures and radiative characteristics are investigated by SEM apparatus and FTIR measurements, respectively. Additionally, based on the fractal structures reconstructed using the Diffusion-Limited Colloid Aggregation (DLCA) method, the effects of particle size on thermal stability of silica aerogels are theoretically investigated and the light shielding performance is numerically analyzed by the Generalized Multiparticle Mie-solution (GMM) method. The simulation and experimental results indicate that the enhanced size of nanoparticles can improve the radiative inhibition and thermal stability property under high temperature significantly. However, the ideal above should be refined as it brings an increasing contribution of conduction heat transfer. Thus, a novel structure of core-mantle nanoparticle is proposed to retain the excellent resistance in radiation but avoid an increased thermal conduction. The present work may pave a new direction for developing aerogels under extreme temperature conditions, compared with the widely-used opacifier addition.

Abstract:The by-product silicon tetrachloride (SiCl4) was usually obtained from polysilicon industry and was a cheaper alternative precursor. An economic method to produce silica aerogel using silicon tetrachloride under ambient pressure drying was presented in this work, which can also solve the pollution problem during the by-product silicon tetrachloride treatment process. The prepared aerogel samples were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis, thermal conductivity analysis, contact angle test, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis. It was found that the molar ratio of H2O/SiCl4 could affect the properties of aerogels seriously. The density and thermal conductivity first decreased and then increased as the molar ratio increased from 13 to 32. The porosity showed an opposite trend with the density. Silica aerogel with high specific surface area (856.7 m(2)/g), low density (0.077 m(3)/g) and low thermal conductivity (0.0213 W/m.k) were obtained at the optimal conditions when the molar ratio was 25. The resulting aerogel is also mesoporous material with super hydrophobicity and have a huge application in thermal insulation field.
Characterization of Mechanical Properties of Silica Aerogels

Abstract:Silica aerogels are nanoporous ultralight new materials with extraordinary material properties. In this study, the mechanical properties of silica aerogels, e.g. Young’s modulus, Poisson’s ratio and constitutive relation, are investigated using Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations and theoretical analysis. In molecular dynamics simulations, an improved process of negative pressure rupturing method is adopted to generate more stable nano-porous structures of silica aerogels. Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are measured by uniaxial and biaxial tension tests respectively. Our simulation results reveal that Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of silica aerogels are both in a power-law relation to the density. According to the nano-porous structures, we propose a new theoretical ideal model for silica aerogels, and Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio are derived by continuum mechanics approach, assuming the backbone as a homogenous and isotropic material. Both simulation and theoretical prediction show a great identity. We hope this constitutive model can be used to investigate macro-mechanical property of silica aerogels in the future.

Abstract:This work reports on isothermal sintering experiments, conducted with silica aerogel samples in a broad density range (∼0.025–0.277 kg/m 3 ) made by the same process by varying the solvent-to-sol ratio, as well as samples made by different formulations used by several aerogel manufacturers. The latter comparison is deficient in the literature. Low-density (<0.05 kg/m 3 ) aerogels were found to be significantly more resilient to sintering, which is consistent with established sintering theories. Unexpectedly large variability in the susceptibility to sintering was observed in similar density (∼0.1 kg/m 3 ) aerogels made by different formulations and by different producers. All material made by utilizing a CO 2 solvent exchange step prior to supercritical drying exhibited effects attributable to residual original solvent in the micropores. This alludes to an incomplete solvent exchange process. The materials were examined in the context of devising a methodology for producing an ultra-pure silica aerogel, a substance free of organic constituents, intended to serve NASA life detection mission needs.

Abstract:The silica alco-gel was obtained by the 2-step acid-base catalyzed TEOS. Aging in a solution of tetraethoxylsilane and trimethylating Si-OH groups increases the strength and stiffness of the wet gel due to the hexanethyldisilazane(HMDSA)on the surface of silica matrix.The modified silica aerogels were obtained by CO_2 supercritical drying method.The bulk density of aerogels is in the range of 30-100 mg/cm~3.FTIR and some other methods were used to investigate the structure and hydrophobic proper- ties.The results show that the aerogel possesses perfect size-stability and hydrophobic properties.The aerogel micro-cylinder for inertial confinement fusion targets were man- ufactured by lathe machine.

Abstract:A series of highly Nano-porous SiO2-ZrO2 aerogels were manufactured with tetraethylorthosilicate (TEOS) and zirconyl nitrate dihydrate (ZrO(NO3)2·2H2O) by the sol-gel method followed by supercritical drying technique. The prepared aerogels are performed by SEM, FT-IR and BET to characterize and analyze the morphology and pores structure of SiO2-ZrO2 aerogels. The results showed that: The areogels are the typical of nano pores in the interval between 1<Dp<30 nm; the specific surface areas varied from 300 to 620 m2/g with (SBET)MAX = 615.5 m2/g with 35 wt% Zirconia and the surface areas decreased with the increase of zirconia; The thermal conductivity attains 0.015 W/(m·k); a mass of Si-O-Zr bands existed in the aerogels indicating a homogeneous distribution of the components on the nano scale.

Abstract:The sol-gel method and supercritical fluids drying have been carried out for the successfully prepared of silica-titania aerogel monoliths. The obtained aerogel exhibits high properties with a density of 0.135 g/cm 3 . We characterized the microstructure and physical characteristic of silica-titania aerogel by the specific surface area, SEM, Hot-disk and FTIR. From the results shown that sample possess high specific surface area (614.6 m 2 /g) and large pore volume (4.4 cm 3 /g). Thermal conductivity coefficients of aerogel monoliths were in the range of 0.026-0.039W/(m·K) as temperature increased to 400°C, implying a good heat insulation stability. This technology will be helpful to provide a specific exploitation mechanism of silica-titania aerogel and to broaden aerogel applications in environment catalyst.

Abstract:Abstract As an attractive collector medium for hypervelocity particles, combined with outstanding physical properties and suitable compositional characteristics, SiO 2 aerogel has been deployed on outer space missions and laser shock-loaded collection experiments. In this paper, impact experiments were conducted to understand the penetration process of irregular grains, irregular Al 2 O 3 grains with two different sizes and speeds (~110 μm@7 km/s, ~251 μm@2.3 km/s) at various density silica aerogels. By classifying the shapes of projectile residues and tracks, the morphology of tracks was analyzed. It was observed that there were several kinds of typical tracks in the penetration of irregular grains, accompanied by residues with the shapes of near-sphere, polyhedron, streamlined body wedge, and rotator. The rotational behavior was demonstrated by the final status of one flake projectile as direct evidence. In addition, there was no obvious relationship between the track length and experimental parameters, which may be caused by the uncertain interaction between aerogels and irregular particles. In addition, it confirmed the existence of fragmentation, melting situation by observing the shape of the impact entrance hole. At the same time, optical coherence tomography was used to observe the detail of tracks clearly, which provided a method to characterize the tracks nondestructively.

Abstract:Contemporary interstellar dust has never been analyzed in the laboratory, despite its obvious astronomical importance and its potential as a probe of stellar nucleosynthesis and galactic chemical evolution. Here we report the discovery of a novel fluorescent aerogel which is capable of capturing hypervelocity dust grains and passively recording their kinetic energies. An array of these "calorimetric" aerogel collectors in low earth orbit would lead to the capture and identification of large numbers of interstellar dust grains.

Abstract:Porous structures of silica aerogels are generated using classical molecular dynamics, with the Tersoff potential, which has been re-parametrized for modeling silicon dioxides. This work demonstrates that this potential is superior to the widely used BKS potential in terms of characterizing the thermal conductivities of amorphous silica, by comparing the vibrational density of states with previous experimental studies. Aerogel samples of increasing densities are obtained through an expanding, heating and quenching process. Reverse non-equilibrium molecular dynamics is applied at each density to determine the thermal conductivity. A power-law fit of the results is found to accurately reflect the power-law variation found in experimental bulk aerogels. The results are also of the same order of magnitude as experimental bulk aerogels, but they are consistently higher. By analyzing the pore size distribution on different simulation length scales, we show that such a disparity is due to finite sizes of pores that can be represented, where increasing simulation length scales lead to an increase in the largest pore size that can be modeled.

Abstract:In this study, silica aerogel was synthesized from rice husk ash-derived water glass through ion-exchange, sol-gel, solvent exchange and ambient pressure drying. The physical and chemical properties of silica aerogel were fully characterized by the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller theory (BET), Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), Thermogravimetric analysis-differential thermal analysis (TGA-DTA), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The effects of processing parameters, especially, the modulus of water glass on the characteristics of the products are deeply investigated. It is found that the modulus of water glass can significantly influence the specific area and pore volume of the aerogel through changing the polymerization degree of SiO group in the water glass solution. As well as, the pH value of sol-gel process and solvent concentration during modification are of importance for the physical properties of silica aerogel. When water glass modulus was 4.26, the gelation pH was 5.0 and the volumetric ratio of Trimethylchlorosilane (TMCS) to n-hexane was 7/50, silica aerogel was obtained with optimal performances of extremely high specific surface area (945.8 m2/g), pore volume (0.889 cm3/g), low density (0.071 g/cm3) uniform pore size distribution, high heat resistance temperature as 400 °C. The presented method is promising to synthesize high specific surface area silica aerogel from rice husk ash.

Abstract:Silica aerogel has been prepared by ambient pressure drying technique using water glass as starting materials. Solvent exchange and surface modification were simultaneously conducted by immersing the wet hydrogel in EtOH/TMCS(Tri Methyl Chloro Silane)/hexane solution. The silica aerogel was obtained with the density of 0.110g•cm -3 and 95.2% porosity. The specific surface area of the silica aerogel was 472.5m 2 •g -1 with a average pore size distrubution of 27.5nm. FT-IR spectrum analysis showed that the surface of the silica aerogel was modified by Si-CH 3 groups, which allowed the aerogel to be hydrophobic.

Abstract:Silica dust emissions from a silicon smelting furnace has been investigated. Preliminary site tests were completed to control silica dust pollution using a cyclone system. It was verified that silica powder has a strong tendency to agglomerate, which can be used in the dust removal process. Particle behavior in a gas flow was studied in the laboratory to better understand the thermophoresis effect on fine particles. The results confirm that fine particles tend to move towards a cooled wall when a temperature difference between the wall and the flow exits. The results indicate that it may be possible to use thermophoresis to concentrate the silica particles in flue gas near the cool wall to promote agglomeration and particle removal.

Abstract:Silica aerogels demonstrate great promise in thermal insulation applications, such as energy-efficient buildings, cold-chain transportation, and aerospace engineering. However, the application of pure silica aerogels is limited in high temperature applications (>500 K) due to their transparency in the wavelength of 2–8 μm. The conventional strategy is to dope silica aerogel with solid spherical opacifiers (e.g., SiC, TiO2, and ZrO2) to increase their extinction coefficient; however, incorporating solid opacifiers into silica aerogel matrix improves the structural density of silica aerogel composites. Herein, we propose to improve the extinction coefficient of the silica aerogel by using hollow opacifiers. A theoretical model was developed to investigate the parameters including the outer diameter, shell thickness, and mass fraction on both the radiative thermal conductivity and total thermal conductivity of the silica aerogel composite doped with hollow opacifiers. Our results indicate that doping hollow opacifiers can enable the silica aerogel matrix to achieve lower radiative thermal conductivity when compared to matrices doped with optimally sized solid opacifiers. The total thermal conductivity of silica aerogel doped with hollow opacifiers could be lower than that of the silica aerogel doped with optimally sized solid opacifiers. This work contributes to the understanding of heat transfer within porous materials and guides the structural design of high-temperature thermally insulating materials.
