Abstract:The morphology and crystal-plane effects of CeO2 materials (nanorods, nanocubes, nanooctas and nanoparticles) on the catalytic performance of Ni/CeO2 in methane dry reforming were investigated. The XRD and Raman results showed that Ni species can be incorporated into the lattices and induce the increase of oxygen vacancies by occupying the vacant sites in the CeO2 nanomaterials. The reaction experiments showed that the catalysts supported over CeO2 nanorods achieved significantly higher catalytic activity and better stability than the other three catalysts. This improved activity was closely related to the strong metal-support interaction between Ni and CeO2 nanorods, which showed great superiority in anchoring Ni nanoparticles. The oxygen vacancies and the mobility of lattice oxygen also showed morphology dependence. They can participate in the catalytic reaction and be favorable for the elimination of carbon deposition. Resistance to carbon deposition was found over the Ni/CeO2-nanorod catalyst, whereas large quantities of graphitic carbon species were formed over the Ni/CeO2-nanocube catalysts, which was responsible for deactivation.
Typical Crystal Face Effects of Different Morphology Ceria on the Activity of Pd/CeO2 Catalysts for Lean Methane Combustion

Abstract:The catalytic efficiency of CeO2 carriers and the catalytic properties of palladium (Pd) nanocrystals loaded on different morphology CeO2 carrier were studied for lean methane (CH4) combustion. The catalytic activity of simple CeO2 carriers was ranked in the order of rod-CeO2(r-CeO2) > cube-CeO2(c-CeO2) > octahedral-CeO2(o-CeO2). After the Pd species was loaded on CeO2, 90% of CH4 was converted at 348 degrees C catalyzed by Pd/octa-hedral-CeO2 (Pd/o-CeO2) with (1 1 1) crystal faces, which had much higher catalytic activity comparing with Pd loaded on c-CeO2 with (1 0 0) crystal faces and r-CeO2 with (1 1 0) and (1 0 0) crystal faces. The results of XRD, HRTEM, EDS, H-2-TPR, XPS and elemental mapping showed that the Pd species in the form of Pd-0 and PdO were highly dispersed on surface of all CeO2 carriers. Most importantly, quasi In-situ XPS results convinced that Ce3+/Ce4+ ion pairs played an important role in the catalytic combustion of low-concentration methane by adsorbing or releasing oxygen. Compared with r-CeO2 and c-CeO2, the concentration of Ce3+ on the surface of o-CeO2 carrier was greatly increased when the Pd species were present, which indirectly reflected that the concentration of oxygen vacancies on the carrier surface also increased. Consequently, the high catalytic activity of Pd/o-CeO2 is not only related to the high dispersion of Pd-0 and PdO species on the surface of the catalyst, but also closely related to the synergistic interaction between Pd species and (1 1 1) specific faces of o-CeO2 exposing.

Abstract:The comparative catalytic activity and coke resistance are examined in carbon dioxide reforming of methane over Ni/CeO2 nanorods (NR) and nanopolyhedra (NP). The Ni/CeO2–NR catalysts display more excellent catalytic activity and higher coke resistance compared with the Ni/CeO2–NP. The high resolution transmission electron microscope reveals that the predominantly exposed planes are the unusually reactive {110} and {100} planes on the CeO2–NR rather than the stable {111} one on the CeO2–NP. The prepared samples were also characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, UV and visible Raman spectra, and oxygen temperature-programmed oxidation. Effects of Extrinsic Defects Originating from the Interfacial Reaction of CeO2-x-nickel Silicate on Catalytic Performance in Methane Dry Reforming

Abstract:Dry reforming of methane is a promising process to convert two greenhouse gases into syngas. Calcinated nickel silicate nanotubes (C-NSNT) as well as CeO2-x interface-confined and nickel silicate nanotubes (NSNT)-derived Ni catalysts, which are marked as lambda CeO2-x-NSNT (lambda = 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2.25), is prepared and evaluated in dry reforming of methane. Compared with C-NSNT, the lambda CeO2-x-NSNT samples exhibit improved catalytic performance in dry reforming of methane, which is closely related to Ni-CeSiO2-x interface along with extrinsic defects from the interfacial reaction between CeO2 and NSNT during the reduction process. Extrinsic defects can generate oxygen vacancies that can be accompanied by Ce3+ species. The enhancement of catalytic activity is ascribed to confined effects of extrinsic defects at contact interface of Ni-CeSiO2-x and electronic effects of CeO2-x. Furthermore, Ni-CeSiO2-x interface with rich extrinsic defects can promote the adsorption and activation of CO2 as electron donor on reduced lambda CeO2-x-NSNT catalysts, which is fast dissociated into CO* and O*. Meanwhile, oxygen vacancies can transfer adsorbed O* species to Ni active sites to promote the carbon gasification reaction, which is responsible for the enhancement of catalytic stability in methane dry reforming for lambda CeO2-x-NSNT catalysts. 1.5CeO(2-x)-NSNT sample with more extrinsic defects has particular higher catalytic stability due to the improvement of anti-coking.

Abstract:The present work determined the morphology and crystal plane effects of nanoceria on the activity of Cu/CeO2 catalysts in the gas/solid-phase hydrogenation of CO2-derived diethyl carbonate (DEC) to methanol. The effect of the terminating crystalline planes of CeO2 ({100}, {110}, and {111}) on the behaviour of copper species dispersed over CeO2 nanocubes, nanorods and nanoparticles was examined in detail using a variety of characterization techniques. HRTEM studies revealed that CeO2 nanorods were mainly enclosed by {100} and {110} planes, nanoparticles exhibited only {111} surfaces, and nanocubes predominantly displayed {100} planes. Cu/CeO2 nanorods (Cu/Ce-NR) possessed higher Cu+/Cu-0 ratios and more oxygen vacancies than Cu/CeO2 nanoparticles (Cu/Ce-NP) and Cu/CeO2 nanocubes (Cu/Ce-NC), which indicated that there was a stronger interaction between Cu and CeO2 nanorods. A test of activity in the hydrogenation of DEC showed that Cu/Ce-NR was more active than Cu/Ce-NP and Cu/Ce-NC, which could be attributed to the higher value of S-Cu0, surface oxygen mobility and Cu+/Cu-0 ratio. These results confirm that the activity of Cu/CeO2 catalysts for the hydrogenation of DEC is greatly affected by the shape/crystal planes of CeO2.
Effect of CeO2 morphology on performance of NiO/CeO2 catalyst in combined steam and CO2 reforming of CH4

Abstract:Nanorods (NR), nanoparticles (NP), and nanocubes (NC) of ceria were prepared by hydrothermal method and used as supports for NiO catalysts for bireforming of CH 4 in this investigation. Effects of NiO contents (5-20 wt.%), quantities of reagents, and calcination duration (1-3 h) at 800°C were investigated. Several techniques, including N 2 physisorption measurements, X-ray powder diffraction, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, scanning electron microscope (SEM), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to investigate the physico-chemical properties of catalysts. The catalytic performance of the Ni/CeO 2 catalysts in combined steam and CO 2 reforming of CH 4 (bi-reforming) was assessed in the temperature range of 550-800°C. The results revealed that a better duration for calcination is 2 h. After reduction at 800°C for 2 h, catalyst 10 wt% NiO/CeO 2 -NR was more active and exhibited much higher activity at lower reaction temperature range than others. The high surface area and better reducibility were responsible for improving performance of this catalyst. Moreover, strong metal support interaction (SMSI) was attributed to the better anti-sintering ability leading to a higher stability with time on stream (TOS) of this catalyst. Besides, this improvement of anti-carbon deposition for 10 wt% NiO/CeO 2 -NR catalyst also owned to CeO 2 nature of oxygen capacity. At reaction temperature of 700°C, its catalytic performance could remain over 30 h until deactivation initiated. Coke amount formed after 30 h of TOS was found to be as low as 1.84 mg C /g cat by using temperature programmed oxidation technique.

Abstract:A series of supported TiO2/CeO2 catalysts were synthesized to investigate the morphology and crystal-plane effects of CeO2 on these TiO2/CeO2 catalysts for selective catalytic reduction by ammonia (NH3-SCR). The experiment results show that TiO2/CeO2-NC, TiO2/CeO2-NP, and TiO2/CeO2-NR catalysts present nanocubes (mainly exposed {100} facet), nanopolyhedrons (mainly exposed {111} and {100} facets), and nanorods (mainly exposed {110} and {100} facets), respectively. Furthermore, TiO2/CeO2-NR catalyst exhibits the best dispersion of TiO2 species, the most excellent reduction behavior and surface acidity, and the largest amount of Ce3+ ions and chemisorbed oxygen, which is due to the largest specific surface area and pore volume of CeO2-NR support, as well as the strongest interaction between the surface dispersed TiO2 species and the {110} facet of CeO2-NR support. All of them result in the best denitration performance of TiO2/CeO2-NR catalyst during NH3-SCR reaction.
Crystal-Plane and Shape Influences of Nanoscale CeO2 on the Activity of Ni/CeO2 Catalysts for Maleic Anhydride Hydrogenation

Abstract:Through use of the hydrothermal technique, various shaped CeO2 supports, such as nanocubes (CeO2-C), nanorods (CeO2-R), and nanoparticles (CeO2-P), were synthesized and employed for supporting Ni species as catalysts for a maleic anhydride hydrogenation (MAH) reaction. The achievements of this characterization illustrate that Ni atoms are capable of being incorporated into crystal lattices and can occupy the vacant sites on the CeO2 surface, which leads to an enhancement of oxygen vacancies. The results of the MAH reaction show that the morphology and shape of CeO2 play an important role in the catalytic performance of the MAH reaction. The catalyst for the rod-like CeO2-R obtains a higher catalytic activity than the other two catalysts. It can be concluded that the higher catalytic performances of rod-like CeO2-R sample should be attributed to the higher dispersion of Ni particles, stronger support-metal interaction, more oxygen vacancies, and the lattice oxygen mobility. The research on the performances of morphology-dependent Ni/CeO2 catalysts as well as the relative reaction strategy of MAH will be remarkably advantageous for developing novel catalysts for MA hydrogenation.

Abstract:Ir catalysts supported on Ce0.9La0.1O2 nanorods and nanoparticles were comparatively investigated for syngas production from methane dry reforming reaction. The exposure of active {110} and {100} crystal planes in the Ir/Ce0.9La0.1O2- nanorods catalysts contributed to the stronger redox property and more oxygen vacancy than those in the Ir/Ce0.9La0.1O2-nanoparticles catalysts. These advantages facilitated activation and transformation of methane and carbon dioxide, giving an enhanced performance of methane dry reforming reaction over the Ir/Ce0.9La0.1O2-nanorods catalysts. The work demonstrated significant influences of support morphologies in obtaining stable catalysts for methane dry reforming reaction.

Abstract:Low temperature methane dry reforming by Ni-based catalysts is an economic way to convert greenhouse gases of CH4 and CO2, but carbon deposition is a great challenge. Taking the advantage of mobile oxygen on CeO2, we synthesized a Ni@SiO2@CeO2 catalyst by coating ceria on surface of Ni@SiO2 to reduce carbon deposition. H2 temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and oxygen temperature-programmed desorption demonstrated the high oxygen mobility from ceria in Ni@SiO2@CeO2 catalyst, which significantly reduced carbon deposition and enhanced stability of methane dry reforming reaction. Experimental results revealed that methane dry reforming performance was one and a half times higher, but carbon deposition was one half lower, over the Ni@SiO2@CeO2 catalyst than over the Ni@SiO2 catalyst. The strategy of ceria coating in reducing carbon deposition and enhancing reaction stability could also be applied to other heterogeneous reactions suffering carbon deposition.
CeO2 nanorod@NiPhy core‐shell catalyst for methane dry reforming: effect of simultaneous sintering prevention of CeO2 support and active Ni

Abstract:Preventing the sintering of nano‐catalyst is crucial to maintain their performance especially for high‐temperature reactions such as CO 2 reforming of methane (DRM) reaction. In this paper, we design CeO 2 nanorod@Ni phyllosilicate (CeO 2 @NiPhy) catalysts with different NiPhy shell thickness to simultaneously preserve the morphology of CeO 2 nanorod and prevent the sintering of Ni. Compared with Ni/CeO 2 supported catalyst, CeO 2 @NiPhy core‐shell catalyst with a shell thickness of 9 nm exhibits much better performance for DRM with stable CH 4 and CO 2 conversions of 75% and 80% respectively and lower carbon deposition due to high Ni sintering resistance and higher thermal stability of CeO 2 during calcination and DRM reaction thereby higher oxygen vacancies concentration. In‐situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectra result demonstrates that DRM reaction takes place with a bi‐functional mechanism on CeO 2 @NiPhy. This design strategy can be applied to prepare other nano‐catalysts with high sintering resistance of both active metal and catalyst support for high‐temperature applications.

Abstract:Developing high performance catalysts for the low temperature CO2 reforming with methane (CRM) reaction is a challenge due to the occurrences of metal sintering and carbon deposition. In this study, we synthesized CeO2 modified 2 catalysts with excellent properties of sintering-resistance and low carbon deposition for high performance low temperature CRM. The 2-CeO2 catalysts displayed a size effect from tiny Ni nanoparticles to enhance CRM performance and a confinement effect from silica encapsulation to limit Ni sintering and exhibited oxygen storage capacity from ceria to reduce carbon deposition. Performance and characterization results revealed that the 2-CeO2-W catalyst with smaller ceria size exhibited higher performance and lower carbon deposition than the 2-CeO2–E catalyst with bigger ceria size, because the smaller ceria nanoparticles activated more CO2. This work provided a simple strategy to deposit small sized ceria on the 2 catalyst surface for the performance enhancement of low temperature CRM.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:CeO2 microspheres and nanotubes were synthesized via the hydrothermal route. Catalytic properties of the Pd/CeO2 catalysts were investigated using the low-concentration methane oxidation as probe reaction. The structures and morphologies were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, Nitrogen ad/desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Raman techniques. The results show that the catalytic activity is strongly dependent on the morphology of CeO2. The property of Pd/CeO2-microspheres catalyst is superior to that of Pd/CeO2-nanotubes, which is attributed to its short porous channel, the exposed active planes, and existence of CeO2−x. The Pd/CeO2-microspheres catalyst will be a promising candidate for low-concentration methane oxidation.

Abstract:Ni supported on the ordered mesoporous CexZr1−xO2 with various Ce/Zr molar ratios prepared by a programmed evaporation-induced self-assembly method were employed for dry reforming of methane. The systematical techniques, including X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, Raman, transmission electron microscope, chemisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, diffuse reflection Fourier transform infrared spectrum, thermogravimetric analysis, etc. were used to clarify the structure-activity relationship. It was found that the prepared catalysts all had highly ordered mesoporous structures, and compared to the sole ZrO2 and CeO2, the CeO2-ZrO2 composites exhibited the best thermal stability, stronger basicity, and greater oxygen migration. Especially, the composite with Ce/Zr ratio of 1/4 possessed the suitable basicity and most oxygen vacancies, which were closely related to the excellent anti-carbon ability. Moreover, its supported catalyst had the strongest metal-support interaction and highest Ni dispersion. Ceria Crystal Facet Impact for Methane C–H Activation in Pd/CeO2 Catalysts

Abstract:The exposed facets of ceria crystal have a profound effect on the reactivity of ceria-supported catalysts owing to the intricate metal support interactions. In this work, ceria nanorods, nanocubes, and polyhedral, corresponding exposed (100)/(110), (100), and (111) terminations, were hydrothermally synthesized to support Pd species, with the aim of investigating the in-depth impacts of ceria crystal facets for methane combustion over ceria-supported palladium catalysts. The nanorods sample delivered the highest methane conversion (T50 = 277 oC, GHSV = 200000 mL h-1 gcat-1) and larger reaction rate (1.85 molCH4 h-1 gcat-1, T = 300 oC), 1.18 times that of nanocubes and 3.70 times that of polyhedral. Further characterizations revealed that on (100)/(110) surface planes, PdOx exhibited stronger interactions with CeO2. This led to enhanced formation of Pd4+ and higher reducibility of PdOx species, thus promoting methane activation. This work would supply experimental insights into the relationship between exposed facets and reactivity, as well as guidance for rational catalyst design.

Abstract:Ni-CeO2 is a highly efficient, stable and non-expensive catalyst for methane dry reforming at relative low temperatures (700 K). The active phase of the catalyst consists of small nanoparticles of nickel dispersed on partially reduced ceria. Experiments of ambient pressure XPS indicate that methane dissociates on Ni/CeO2 at temperatures as low as 300 K, generating CHx and COx species on the surface of the catalyst. Strong metal-support interactions activate Ni for the dissociation of methane. The results of density-functional calculations show a drop in the effective barrier for methane activation from 0.9 eV on Ni(111) to only 0.15 eV on Ni/CeO2-x (111). At 700 K, under methane dry reforming conditions, no signals for adsorbed CHx or C species are detected in the C 1s XPS region. The reforming of methane proceeds in a clean and efficient way.

Abstract:Ni catalysts are the most investigated for methane dry reforming reaction, but sintering of Ni nanoparticles and deposition of carbon are great challenges for performance stability. To overcome the obstacles, synergistic multifunctional (Ni/CeO2)@SiO2 catalyst by confining Ni nanoparticles and CeO2 nanocrystals in SiO2 nanospheres is synthesized in this work. The core construction promotes reaction activity and reduces carbon deposition, and the shell confines migration of the core components to maintain their sizes. The functions contribute to the enhanced performance of methane dry reforming reaction. High resolution Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray power diffraction, Hydrogen temperature programmed reduction etc. suggest that the great enhancements are due to the synergetic multifunction of the size effect and the strong metal-support interaction from Ni and CeO2, and the confinement effect from SiO2 in the catalyst. This finding about the synergetic strategy provides an efficient way to completely resolve Ni sintering and carbon formation in methane dry reforming, and is highly applicable to other reactions that suffering sintering and carbon deposition.
