Abstract:The shape of the carriers has a profound impact on the catalytic performance of metal-supported catalysts. Herein, ZrO2 of different shapes (nanorods-like, spherical or irregular nanoparticles, demoted as RZ, SPZ, and IPZ, respectively) are adopted to disperse Ni species to assess the shape effects on the catalytic performance in dry reforming of methane. To this end, the fresh and spent catalysts are thoroughly characterized by multiple techniques including N-2 sorption, powder X-ray diffraction, temperature-programmed reduction with H-2, thermogravimetric analyses, transmission electron microscopy, Raman and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies. It is revealed that the reducibility of NiO species follows the orders of Ni/RZ<Ni/SPZ<Ni/IPZ. Consequently, Ni/RZ and Ni/SPZ show lower dehydrogenation activity than Ni/IPZ, but the more abundant lattice oxygen species promote the gasification of carbonaceous deposits. Therefore, the shape design of the carriers provides a new perspective in mediating the catalytic performance of Ni/ZrO2 in the reforming reaction.

Abstract:Methane reforming with carbon dioxide provides an environmentally friendly route for converting methane to synthesis gas while consuming two greenhouse gases. Large-scale implementation of this process has been stalled by the lack of stable catalysts owing to the rapid deactivation caused by carbon deposition and sintering. Ni/Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95 catalysts with better activity and enhanced stability are synthesized for dry reforming of methane. This reaction is believed to occur via the direct C-H bond dissociation of CH4 to form surface carbon intermediates on metal sites followed by the oxidation of carbon intermediates to CO. Compared with CeO2, Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95 with stronger lattice oxygen mobility and higher oxygen storage capacity generates more mobile active oxygen species that participate in eliminating the carbon deposition. Moreover, the particle size of Ni species decreases and Ni shifts to higher oxidation state as a result of the strong metal-support interaction over Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95. The more surface oxygen species are involved in the reaction, the more methane can be converted to CO rather than surface carbon. As a consequence, the balance between the rate of carbon generation (i.e., the direct C-H bond dissociation of CH4) and the rate of carbon consumption (i.e., the oxidation of formed carbon intermediates) can be achieved for dry reforming of methane over Ni/Ce0.9Eu0.1O1.95, leading to less coke accumulation and thereafter an improved overall catalytic performance.

Abstract:Overcoming surface defects Dry reforming of methane with carbon dioxide creates a mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide—synthesis gas—which can be converted into liquid fuels. However, heterogeneous catalysts for this reaction are prone to deactivation through unwanted carbon deposition (coking) and loss of surface area of adsorbed metal nanoparticles through agglomeration (sintering). Y. Song et al. used highly crystalline fumed magnesium oxide to support molybdenumdoped nickel nanoparticle catalysts (see the Perspective by Chen and Xu). On heating, the nanoparticles migrated on the oxide surface to step edges to form larger, highly stable nanoparticles. Dry reforming of methane over CeO2 supported Ni, Co and Ni–Co catalysts

Abstract:Ceria supported Ni, Co monometallic and Ni–Co bimetallic catalysts were prepared by incipient wetness impregnation method, calcined at two different temperatures (700°C and 900°C) and tested for dry reforming of methane reaction at 700°C. The activities of ceria-based Ni containing catalysts decreased with increasing calcination temperature accompanied by a decrease in coke deposition. While Ni/CeO2 and Ni–Co/CeO2 catalysts exhibited comparable high activities, Co/CeO2 catalysts exhibited very low activity. The lower activity of Co/CeO2 catalyst was attributed to strong metal support interaction (SMSI). The SMSI effect was confirmed with TEM images showing a layer of support coating the metal particles. The diversity of the deposited carbon structures in terms morphology (straight long filaments, highly entangled and curly shaped filaments, filaments with knuckle-like structure and carbon onions) was noted. In addition to the carbon buildup, the deactivation was observed to be due to the loss of active metals in the carbon filaments.

Abstract:Ni supported on the ordered mesoporous CexZr1−xO2 with various Ce/Zr molar ratios prepared by a programmed evaporation-induced self-assembly method were employed for dry reforming of methane. The systematical techniques, including X-ray diffraction, N2 physisorption, Raman, transmission electron microscope, chemisorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, diffuse reflection Fourier transform infrared spectrum, thermogravimetric analysis, etc. were used to clarify the structure-activity relationship. It was found that the prepared catalysts all had highly ordered mesoporous structures, and compared to the sole ZrO2 and CeO2, the CeO2-ZrO2 composites exhibited the best thermal stability, stronger basicity, and greater oxygen migration. Especially, the composite with Ce/Zr ratio of 1/4 possessed the suitable basicity and most oxygen vacancies, which were closely related to the excellent anti-carbon ability. Moreover, its supported catalyst had the strongest metal-support interaction and highest Ni dispersion. Abstract:Nickel-ceria has been reported as a very good catalysts for the reforming of methane. Here, the methanol steam reforming reaction on both powder (Ni-CeO2) and model (Ni-CeO2-x(111)) catalysts was investigated. The active phase evolution and surface species transformation on powder catalysts were studied via in situ X-ray diffraction (XRD) and diffuse reflectance infrared transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). Phase transitions of NiO → NiC → Ni and CeO2 → CeO2-x were observed during the reaction. The simultaneous production of H2/CO2 demonstrates that the active phase of the catalysts contains metallic Ni supported over partially reduced ceria. The DRIFTS experiments indicate that a methoxy to formate transition is associated with the reduction of ceria whereas the formation of carbonate species results from the presence of metallic Ni. A study of the reaction of methanol with Ni-CeO2-x(111) by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) points to the essential role of metal-support interactions in an oxygen transfer from ceria to Ni that contributes to the high selectivity of the catalysts.

Abstract:Dry reforming of methane provides a prospective process for converting greenhouse gases into syngas but suffers from the coking and sintering of catalyst at high operating temperatures. Here we report a lamellar cross-linking Ni/CeO 2 catalyst that shows durable performance with 73 % CO 2 and 60 % CH 4 conversions for DRM at 700 °C in a continuous operation of 50 h. The sintering of Ni particles is inhibited due to the confined migration and aggregation of Ni nanoparticles provided by the lamellar CeO 2 nanosheets. Meanwhile, the presence of these CeO 2 nanosheets facilitates the release of lattice oxygen and the formation of oxygen vacancies, thereby generating more reactive oxygen species, as revealed by the characterization of Raman, XPS, H 2 -TPR and O 2 -TPD. The catalyst characterization using TGA and N 2 -TP indicates that the reactive oxygen species can realize the in-situ gasification of carbon deposition, thus achieving a balance between the rate of coke formation and carbon gasification. Due to the dynamic balance of carbon deposits, no further accumulation of carbon deposition is observed during the DRM test from 10 h to 50 h.

Abstract:Low temperature methane dry reforming by Ni-based catalysts is an economic way to convert greenhouse gases of CH4 and CO2, but carbon deposition is a great challenge. Taking the advantage of mobile oxygen on CeO2, we synthesized a Ni@SiO2@CeO2 catalyst by coating ceria on surface of Ni@SiO2 to reduce carbon deposition. H2 temperature-programmed reduction, X-ray photoelectron spectra and oxygen temperature-programmed desorption demonstrated the high oxygen mobility from ceria in Ni@SiO2@CeO2 catalyst, which significantly reduced carbon deposition and enhanced stability of methane dry reforming reaction. Experimental results revealed that methane dry reforming performance was one and a half times higher, but carbon deposition was one half lower, over the Ni@SiO2@CeO2 catalyst than over the Ni@SiO2 catalyst. The strategy of ceria coating in reducing carbon deposition and enhancing reaction stability could also be applied to other heterogeneous reactions suffering carbon deposition.

Abstract:Ni catalysts are the most investigated for methane dry reforming reaction, but sintering of Ni nanoparticles and deposition of carbon are great challenges for performance stability. To overcome the obstacles, synergistic multifunctional (Ni/CeO2)@SiO2 catalyst by confining Ni nanoparticles and CeO2 nanocrystals in SiO2 nanospheres is synthesized in this work. The core construction promotes reaction activity and reduces carbon deposition, and the shell confines migration of the core components to maintain their sizes. The functions contribute to the enhanced performance of methane dry reforming reaction. High resolution Transmission electron microscopy, X-ray power diffraction, Hydrogen temperature programmed reduction etc. suggest that the great enhancements are due to the synergetic multifunction of the size effect and the strong metal-support interaction from Ni and CeO2, and the confinement effect from SiO2 in the catalyst. This finding about the synergetic strategy provides an efficient way to completely resolve Ni sintering and carbon formation in methane dry reforming, and is highly applicable to other reactions that suffering sintering and carbon deposition.

Abstract:The effect of Ni content on the Ni/Ce-ZrO2 catalyst has been investigated in the methane conversion reactions to syngas, such as oxy-reforming, steam reforming and oxy-steam reforming. Among the catalysts examined, Ni/Ce-ZrO2 catalyst with 15% Ni loading exhibits not only the highest catalytic activity and selectivity but also remarkable stability. The TPR results reveal that strong interaction between support and metal exists and that some part of NiO incorporates into the surface of the Ce-ZrO2 support. Combined with H2 chemisorption results, one may deduce that Ni surface area and the chemical environment of nickel, as well as the properties of the Ce-ZrO2 support, play very important roles in the catalytic activity and stability of Ni/Ce-ZrO2 catalysts. It seems that two kinds of active sites, i.e. one for methane and the other for steam or oxygen, are well-balanced on 15% Ni/Ce-ZrO2 catalyst.

Abstract:Dry reforming of methane (DRM) is an effective route to convert two major greenhouse gas (CH4 and CO2) to syngas (H-2 and CO). Herein, in this work, monometallic Ni/CeO2 and a series of bimetallic Co-Ni/CeO2 catalysts with Co/Ni ratios between 0 and 1.0 have been tested for DRM process at 600-850 degrees C, atmospheric pressure and a CH4/CO2 ratio of 1. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction, hydrogen-temperature programmed reduction, CO2-Temperature programmed desorption, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and thermogravimetric analysis. The catalyst with a Co/Ni ratio of 0.8 (labeled as 0.8 Co -Ni/CeO2) exhibited the highest catalytic activity (CH4 and CO2 initial conversion for 80% and 85% at 800 degrees C, respectively) and the highest stability (less carbon deposition after 600min). This improved activity can be attributed to the Co-Ni alloy, which formed after reduction. Its weak chemisorption with hydrogen results in inhibition of reverse water gas shift reaction. Durable Ni/Mgo Catalysts For Co2 Reforming Of Methane: Activity And Metal-Support Interaction

Abstract:Two series of Ni/MgO catalysts were prepared by reducing NiO/MgO samples of fixed Ni loading but different calcination temperatures and of varying Ni loadings but fixed calcination temperature. These catalysts were investigated in CO2 reforming of methane under atmospheric pressure and characterized with XRD, TPR and H-2-TPD techniques. A complete incorporation of NiO into the MgO "support" to form NiO-MgO solid solution during the calcination stage of the catalyst preparation was identified essential for the formation of stable Ni/MgO catalysts, and the presence of readily reducible "free" NiO in the calcined (unreduced) NiO/MgO samples was shown to produce the deactivating Ni/MgO catalysts during the CO2/CH4 reaction. The reactivities of CO2/CH4 were found sensitive to the particle size (or dispersion) of metallic Ni; the catalytic activity by CH4 turnover frequency (TOF) decreased with increasing the Ni particle size. The reduced catalysts showed two H-2-TPD peaks and the nickel sites corresponding to H-2-TPD peak at higher temperature showed a higher activity than those associated with the peak at lower temperature. Our data demonstrate that the support in the stable catalysts was actually a kind of NixMg1-xO (x=0.02-0.15) solid solution and the stable catalytic sites were associated with nanosized Ni particles (3-20 nm) in strong interaction with the solid solution support. Reaction Pathway for Coke-Free Methane Steam Reforming on a Ni/CeO2 Catalyst: Active Sites and the Role of Metal-Support Interactions

Abstract:Methane steam reforming (MSR) plays a key role in the production of syngas and hydrogen from natural gas. The increasing interest in the use of hydrogen for fuel cell applications demands development of catalysts with high activity at reduced operating temperatures. Ni-based catalysts are promising systems because of their high activity and low cost, but coke formation generally poses a severe problem. Studies of ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS) indicate that CH4/H2O gas mixtures react with Ni/CeO2(111) surfaces to form OH, CH x , and CH x O at 300 K. All of these species are easy to form and desorb at temperatures below 700 K when the rate of the MSR process is accelerated. Density functional theory (DFT) modeling of the reaction over ceria-supported small Ni nanoparticles predicts relatively low activation barriers between 0.3 and 0.7 eV for complete dehydrogenation of methane to carbon and the barrierless activation of water at interfacial Ni sites. Hydroxyls resulting from water activation allow for CO formation via a COH intermediate with a barrier of about 0.9 eV, which is much lower than that through a pathway involving lattice oxygen from ceria. Neither methane nor water activation is a rate-determining step, and the OH-assisted CO formation through the COH intermediate constitutes a low-barrier pathway that prevents carbon accumulation. The interactions between Ni and the ceria support and the low metal loading are crucial for the reaction to proceed in a coke-free and efficient way. These results pave the way for further advances in the design of stable and highly active Ni-based catalysts for hydrogen production.
Robust and Coke-free Ni Catalyst Stabilized by 1–2 nm-Thick Multielement Oxide for Methane Dry Reforming

Abstract:Methane dry reforming, co-converting greenhouse gases CH4 and CO2 into chemically active syngas (H2/CO), affords a promising route for producing chemicals and fuels from carbon resources. Ni catalysts are the most active for this reaction but suffer from the dilemma of rapid deactivation caused by metal sintering at higher temperatures (>973 K) or coke accumulation at relatively lower temperatures (673–973 K). Here, we report a catalyst configuration—Ni particles (15 nm) confined by a 1–2 nm-thick multielement-oxide (MEO) layer—allows a stable operation at 873–1073 K with a stoichiometric CH4/CO2 ratio of 1.0, that is, the severe conditions for catalyst deactivation but of industrial interest for process efficiency and atomic economy. The in situ-evolved MEO layer resembles the property of high-entropy oxide, which stabilizes the Ni particles with appropriate size and high-index facets, even at 1173 K. Meanwhile, in situ TEM under near atmospheric pressure combining intelligent gravity analysis (IGA)-mass spectrometry (MS) characterizations prove that this unique structure balanced the activation of CH4 and CO2. Thus, the lifetime of the catalyst has been efficiently prolonged with nearly coke-free operations, even at 873 K, the most severe coking temperature. Highly active Ni/CeO2 catalyst for CO2 methanation: Preparation and characterization

Abstract:A Ni/CeO2 catalyst was prepared via decomposition of nickel precursor by gas discharge plasma, followed by hydrogen reduction thermally. The activity of the obtained catalyst reaches the highest level towards CO2 methanation with methane selectivity above 99 % at reaction temperatures lower than 300 °C. For example, the CH4 formation rate at 275 °C is 100.3 μmol gcat −1 s−1, higher than the reported catalysts at the same reaction temperature. Characterization results indicate that the plasma decomposition leads to an interfacial structure where Ni atoms bind with O atoms from ceria. A strong metal-support interaction is caused. Rich interfacial Ni-CeO2 sites are thus formed with excellent redox property. The unique interfacial structure confines small nickel particles on the ceria surface, exposing more metallic Ni as active sites for splitting H2. Therefore, the plasma prepared Ni/CeO2 catalyst shows balanced active sites for H2 splitting and CO2 activation, improving low temperature catalytic activity significantly.

Abstract:This work investigates the effect of Ni crystallite size and oxygen vacancies of the support on the formation of carbon over Ni/CeO2 catalysts for dry reforming of methane at 1073 K. A large crystallite size variation is achieved by using different Ni loading (5 and 10 wt%) and calcination temperatures (673, 873, 1073 and 1473 K). In situ XRD and XANES experiments reveal that the increase in calcination temperature increases the Ni crystallite size, whereas the amount of oxygen vacancies decreases. The amount of carbon formed during DRM increases as Ni crystallite size increases, achieving a maximum at around 20−30 nm and then, it continuously decreases. However, carbon deposition is negligeable below 10 nm and above 100 nm. For the catalysts with very large Ni crystallite sizes, the CH4 dissociation rate is likely so low that carbon species formed reacts and carbon accumulation does not take place. However, the oxygen vacancies of ceria do not contribute to the carbon removal from the Ni surface due to the low metal-support interface on these large Ni particles.

The PtCo/CeO2 bimetallic catalyst shows higher activity and H-2/CO ratio than the corresponding monometallic catalysts, mainly attributed to the synergistic effect of Pt-Co. Structural feature of the PtCo/CeO2 catalyst was revealed by diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) of adsorbed CO and in situ techniques like X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray adsorption fine structure (XAFS) and ambient-pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (AP-XPS). Pt-Co alloy and separated Co particles co-existed in the bimetallic catalyst, whereas the former was determined as the dominant active structure with a Pt-Co-mixed-surface termination. During reaction, Pt and Co in the alloy structure nearly maintained their metallic state with slight oxygen decoration, yielding oxygen-metal site-pairs (O*-*). Combined kinetic investigations and DFT calculations reveal that the O*-modified catalytic surface of PtCo/CeO2 promotes C-H bond activation with higher entropy contribution (less constraints) to compensate its higher activation barrier. Thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and Raman spectroscopy show that the PtCo/CeO2 catalyst is resistant to coke formation as effectively as Pt/CeO2 and can be easily regenerated by a mild CO2 treatment.
Methane dry reforming over activated carbon supported Ni-catalysts prepared by solid phase synthesis

Abstract:The catalysts for methane dry reforming were commonly confronted with the problems of metal component agglomeration and carbon deposition. The catalysts made by solid-phase synthesis could effectively overcome these problems. In this paper, methane dry reforming was catalyzed over activated carbon supported Ni-catalysts prepared by solid-phase synthesis. Through this method, the catalysts exhibited a uniform metal dispersion over the carrier, with particle size at the nanoscale of 4.69 nm. Catalytic performance of the prepared catalysts was tested, and the results showed that the catalysts could effectively catalyze methane dry reforming, due to little metal agglomeration and the balanced competition between carbon deposition and carbon consumption. In the catalytic performance testing initiated at 900 °C, the conversions of CH4 and CO2 were maintained at 80.3% and 97.5% after the testing, respectively. It was also noticed the syngas generated in the testing process had a favorable H2/CO ratio, at around 1. The syngas was considered to be beneficial to the synthesis of methanol, ammonia and oxygen-containing chemicals by Fischer-Tropsch process. It should be emphasized the reactant gases conversions presented an upward trend when the testing arrived at about 2 h, revealing an enhancement of catalyst activity. In totally, the catalysts prepared by solid-phase synthesis could avoid the agglomeration of active component and the serious carbon deposition, thus slowing down the catalyst deactivation. Through this work, it was demonstrated solid-phase method could open up new possibilities for the synthesis of highly active and stable catalysts for methane dry reforming.

Abstract:CeO2-promoted Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2 (Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2-CeO2) catalysts were prepared by a direct sol-gel process with citric acid as gelling agent. The catalysts used for the methane reforming with CO2 was studied by infrared spectroscopy (IR), thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA), microscopic analysis, X-ray diffraction (XRD) and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR). The catalytic performance for CO2 reforming of methane to synthesis gas was investigated in a continuous-flow micro-reactor under atmospheric pressure. TGA, IR, XRD and microscopic analysis show that the catalysts prepared by the direct sal-gel process consist of Ni particles with a nanostructure of around 5 nm and an amorphous-phase composite oxide support. There exists a chemical interaction between metallic Ni particles and supports, which makes metallic Ni well dispersed, highly active and stable. The addition of CeO2 effectively improves the dispersion and the stability of Ni particles of the prepared catalysts, and enhances the adsorption of CO2 on the surface of catalysts. The catalytic tests for methane reforming with CO2 to synthesis gas show that the Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2-CeO2 catalysts show excellent activity and stability compared with the Ni/Al2O3 catalyst. The excellent catalytic activity and stability of the Ni/Al2O3-ZrO2-CeO2 are attributed to the highly, uniformly and stably dispersed small metallic Ni particles, the high reducibility of the Ni oxides and the interaction between metallic Ni particles and the composite oxide supports.
Low temperature dry reforming of methane over Pt/CeO2, Ni/CeO2 and Pt-Ni/CeO2 catalysts prepared by solution-combustion method

Abstract:This study investigates low temperature reforming of methane with CO2 over mono-metallic (Pt/CeO2 and Ni/CeO2) and bi-metallic (Pt-Ni/CeO2) solid solution catalysts prepared by using a one-pot solution-combustion method. Various analytical techniques were employed to analyze the synthesized catalysts in order to correlate their physicochemical properties to their catalytic activity. Solid solution formation was confirmed by the lattice parameter shifting and Rietveld refinement analysis. Solid-solution formation enhanced the defective oxygen species. The TPR and TPDs studies showed that the synergy between Pt and Ni enhanced active oxygen species and metal-support interaction of Pt-Ni/CeO2 catalyst, which are beneficial for the higher adsorption of CH4 and CO2. Pt-Ni/CeO2 catalysts have a higher amount of O22-, O2- species and AD/AF2g ratio followed by the NC and PC catalysts, as confirmed by the O2-TPD, XPS and RAMAN analysis. Pt-based catalysts start the DRM reaction at 350 °C, whereas Ni/CeO2 activates at a temperature 100 °C higher than Pt-Ni/CeO2 and Pt/CeO2. At 675 °C, Pt-Ni/CeO2 showed ~ 86 % conversion of CO2 and CH4 with 100% selectivity of synthesis gas with H2/CO ratio of ~ 1, while Pt/CeO2 and Ni/CeO2 shows ~ 46.2 and ~ 59.8% conversion, respectively. DFT calculations showed that the Pt-Ni/CeO2 catalyst required less activation energy than the monometallic catalyst to activate CH4 and CO2. We believe that the synergy between Ni and Pt enhanced the structural and electronic properties of Pt-Ni/CeO2, which is responsible for its excellent performance at low temperature.
