Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films are promising materials for transparent conductive films (TCFs) with potential applications in flexible displays, touch screens, solar cells and solid-state lighting1,2. However, further reductions in resistivity and in cost of SWCNT films are necessary for high quality TCF products3. Here, we report an improved floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition method to directly and continuously produce ultrathin and freestanding SWCNT films at the hundred meter-scale. Both carbon conversion efficiency and SWCNT TCF yield are increased by three orders of magnitude relative to the conventional floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition. After doping, the film manifests a sheet resistance of 40 ohm/sq. at 90% transmittance, representing record performance for large-scale SWCNT films. Our work provides a new avenue to accelerate the industrialization of SWCNT films as TCFs.

Abstract:We describe here a simple and low-cost method to prepare ultra-thin, homogeneous, and transferable films of pristine carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The highly efficient chemical vapor deposition (CVD) growth method involves silica supported catalysts and alcohol vapor as gaseous carbon source. By varying the amount of catalysts, the thickness of synthesized films can be easily tuned from 20 nm (sub-monolayer) to 150 nm in a controlled fashion. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) revealed that the films are composed primarily of single-walled and a small fraction of double-walled CNTs. A nonlinear relationship between film conductivity and thickness was observed. Our sub-monolayer (similar to 20 nm) film, which is noticeably thinner than conductive CNT films synthesized using other methods (typically > 50 nm and up to similar to 100 mu m), shows the highest conductivity of 400 mho . cm(-1) with similar to 90% transparency in the visible range and close to 100% transparency in the infrared range. This ultra-thin film can also be transferred carrier-film free to a wide range of substrates including low-cost plastics for flexible electronics. Compared to CNT films prepared by filtration techniques, our films demonstrated superior stability against mechanical bending.

Abstract:In this chapter, the performances of the single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) based transparent and conductive films (TCFs) are investigated through optimizing several key fabrication conditions. We find that, with the SWCNT suspension centrifuged at 10000 rpm and glass substrate treated with APTES, soft-baking at 105 degrees C, hard-baking at 300 degrees C, HNO3 acid and PEDOT post treatments efficiently improve the conductivity and transmittance of the SWCNT-based TCFs.
High-performance single-walled carbon nanotube transparent conducting film fabricated by using low feeding rate of ethanol solution

Abstract:We report floating catalyst chemical vapour deposition synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for high-performance transparent conducting films (TCFs) using low feeding rate of precursor solution. Herein, ethanol acts as carbon source, ferrocene and thiophene as catalyst precursor and growth promoter, respectively. By adopting a low feeding rate of 4 µl min-1, the fabricated TCFs present one of the lowest sheet resistances of ca 78 Ω sq.-1. at 90% transmittance. Optical characterizations demonstrate that the mean diameter of high-quality SWCNTs is up to 2 nm. Additionally, electron microcopy observations provide evidence that the mean length of SWCNT bundles is as long as 28.4 µm while the mean bundle diameter is only 5.3 nm. Moreover, very few CNT loops can be found in the film. Remarkably, the fraction of individual SWCNTs reaches 24.6%. All those morphology data account for the superior optoelectronic performance of our SWCNT TCFs.

Abstract:The one-dimensional character of electrons, phonons and excitons in individual single-walled carbon nanotubes leads to extremely anisotropic electronic, thermal and optical properties. However, despite significant efforts to develop ways to produce large-scale architectures of aligned nanotubes, macroscopic manifestations of such properties remain limited. Here, we show that large (>cm2) monodomain films of aligned single-walled carbon nanotubes can be prepared using slow vacuum filtration. The produced films are globally aligned within ±1.5° (a nematic order parameter of ∼1) and are highly packed, containing 1 × 106 nanotubes in a cross-sectional area of 1 μm2. The method works for nanotubes synthesized by various methods, and film thickness is controllable from a few nanometres to ∼100 nm. We use the approach to create ideal polarizers in the terahertz frequency range and, by combining the method with recently developed sorting techniques, highly aligned and chirality-enriched nanotube thin-film devices. Semiconductor-enriched devices exhibit polarized light emission and polarization-dependent photocurrent, as well as anisotropic conductivities and transistor action with high on/off ratios. Large films of aligned and closely packed single-walled carbon nanotubes can be prepared through slow vacuum filtration, and used to create terahertz polarizers, thin-film transistors, polarized light emission devices, and polarization-sensitive detectors.

Abstract:The bundle formation of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) has dramatically hindered their performances of transparent conducting films (TCFs). Herein, we synthesized less bundled SWCNTs by reducing the concentration of catalyst precursor in floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition. The gas-phase number concentration of SWCNTs could be reduced from 1.6ŌĆ»├ŚŌĆ»10 6 to 4ŌĆ»├ŚŌĆ»10 5 cm ŌłÆ3 by decreasing the catalyst precursor and thus, the bundle formation due to nanotube collisions induced by Brownian diffusion was significantly inhibited. Ōł╝42% of SWCNTs were found to be individual with a mean tube diameter of 1.0 nm, mean length of 2.5 ╬╝m and mean bundle diameter of 2.1 nm, the corresponding SWCNT TCF exhibited a sheet resistance of 109 ╬®/sq. at 90% optical transmittance. Our work provides a strategy of synthesizing highly individual SWCNTs for enhanced performance of TCFs, implying great potential in electronic applications.

Abstract:<p>Single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) films are promising materials as flexible transparent conductive films (TCFs). Here, inspired by the extrusion blown plastic film technique and the SWCNT synthesis approach by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), a novel blown aerosol chemical vapor deposition (BACVD) method is reported to directly and continuously produce freestanding SWCNT TCFs at several hundred meters per hour. The synthesis mechanism, involving blowing a stable aerosol bubble and transforming the bubble into an aerogel, is investigated, and a general phase diagram is established for this method. For the SWCNT TCFs via BACVD, both carbon conversion efficiency and SWCNT TCF yield can reach three orders of magnitude higher than those with the conventional FCCVD. The film displays a sheet resistance of 40 ohm sq<sup>−1</sup> at 90% transmittance after being doped, representing the record performance based on large‐scale SWCNT films. Transparent, flexible, and stretchable electrodes based on BACVD films are demonstrated. Moreover, this high‐throughput method of producing SWCNT TCFs can be compatible with the roll‐to‐roll process for mass production of flexible displays, touch screens, solar cells, and solid‐state lighting, and is expected to have a broad and long‐term impact on many fields from consumer electronics to energy conversion and generation.</p>

Abstract:A good dispersion of single‐walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) in liquid media is a prerequisite to fulfill many of their applications. This contribution reports an efficient approach to additive‐free dispersion of SWCNTs with the aid of functionalized carbonaceous byproducts (CBs, e.g., amorphous carbon, carbon nanoparticles, and carbonaceous fragments) in SWCNT products. SWCNT bundles are treated by oleum intercalation and nitric acid oxidation in sequence, which leads to the selective functionalization of the CBs while the structure and properties of the SWCNTs are well preserved. These functionalized CBs can improve the subsequent dispersion of SWCNTs and the majority of SWCNTs in the suspension are present in small bundles or individually. Moreover, SWCNT transparent conductive films (TCFs) are fabricated by using these suspensions. The SWCNT TCFs obtained can achieve a low sheet resistance of 76 and 133 Ω sq−1, with optical transmittance of 82% and 90% at 550 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are ideal candidates for transparent conductive films (TCFs) due to their excellent optical transparency and electrical conductivity. The geometry of SWCNTs, including the tube diameter, bundle length and bundle diameter, is vital to high-performance TCFs. Herein, we synthesized SWCNTs by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD). The SWCNT geometries were tuned by hydrogen (H-2), and we found that the tube diameter, bundle length and bundle diameter increase with the H-2 concentration. Besides, we observed the formation of SWCNT loop at the tube ends. Both the number and circumference of loops increased with the increment of bundle length. Further, the loops were also found to affect the conductivity of SWCNT thin film. Excessive number of loops with large size could reduce the conductivity of SWCNT thin film. At the optimized H-2 concentration, we obtained the SWCNT TCF with sheet resistances of 290 and 95 omega/sq. for the pristine and AuCl3 doped SWCNT films, respectively, at 90% transmittance. Our work demonstrates the importance of H-2 for SWCNT synthesis and the critical role of loops on film conductivity, blazing new ideas for future research to obtain SWCNT TCFs with improved performance.

Abstract:Double-walled carbon nanotubes (DWCNTs) and two kinds of vertically aligned multi-walled carbon nanotubes were employed as raw materials to fabricate transparent conductive films (TCFs). DWCNTs constructed the densest conductive network at the same transmittance, and the corresponding TCFs showed the best performance (320 Ω/□ at 75.0% T). The ratio of dc conductivity to optical conductivity (σ dc/σ op) of the as-dispersed DWCNTs was 3.88. The as-obtained TCFs were dipped in HNO3 solution to improve their performances. Attributed to the removal of sodium dodecyl sulfate molecules, reduction of film thickness, and doping with electron acceptors (such as oxygen), the surface resistance after HNO3 treatment decreased. The σ dc/σ op ratio of the DWCNTs was further increased to 5.24.

Abstract:A super-flexible single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) transparent conductive film (TCF) was produced based on a combination of electrophoretic deposition (EPD) and hot-pressing transfer. EPD was performed in a diluted SWCNT suspension with high zeta potential prepared by a pre-dispersion-then-dilution procedure using sodium dodecyl sulfate as the surfactant and negative charge supplier. A SWCNT film was deposited on a stainless steel anode surface by direct current electrophoresis and then transferred to a poly(ethylene terephthalate) substrate by hot-pressing to achieve a flexible SWCNT TCF. The SWCNT TCF obtained by this technique can achieve a sheet resistance of 220 Omega/sq with 81% transparency at 550 nm wavelength and a strong adhesion to the substrate. More importantly, no decrease in the conductivity of the SWCNT TCF was detected after 10 000 cycles of repeated bending. The result indicates that the EPD and hot-pressing transfer technique is an effective approach for fabricating a carbon nanotube TCF with excellent flexibility.

Abstract:The floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD) method for producing single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) has demonstrated great potential in transparent conductive film (TCF) application. In FCCVD, reducing the concentration of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is a well-agreed method of improving the conductivity of SWNT TCF, achieved by producing thinner and longer CNT bundles. However, this method decreases the yield dramatically, which has persisted throughout the TCF development. Here, the production of large-diameter double-walled CNT (DWNT) TCFs via FCCVD is reported, which overcomes the tradeoff between performance and yield. These TCFs of DWNTs with an average diameter of ≈4 nm have a low sheet resistance of 35 Ω sq−1 at 90% transmittance. The conductivity here aligns with the best-performing SWNT TCFs reported to date, showing a production yield greater than two orders of magnitude. The main factor contributing to the high performance and yield is considered to be the large tube diameter, which greatly improves the yield threshold of CNT bundling and leads to long tube length and unique junctions broadening. Moreover, the application of DWNT TCFs in perovskite solar cells exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 17.4%, which has not been reported yet in indium-free CNT-based solar cells.

Abstract:Field emission devices using a wet-processed composite cathode of carbon nanotube films coated with titanium dioxide exhibit outstanding field emission characteristics, including ultralow turn on field of 0.383V mu m(-1) and threshold field of 0.657V mu m(-1) corresponding with a very high field enhancement factor of 20 000, exceptional current stability, and excellent emission uniformity. The improved field emission properties are attributed to the enhanced edge effect simultaneously with the reduced screening effect, and the lowered work function of the composite cathode. In addition, the highly stable electron emission is found due to the presence of titanium dioxide nanoparticles on the carbon nanotubes, which prohibits the cathode from the influence of ions and free radical created in the emission process as well as residual oxygen gas in the device. The high-performance solution-processed composite cathode demonstrates great potential application in vacuum electronic devices. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract:Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) are considered to be ideal candidates for flexible and transparent heaters (THs). However, the conventional wet-fabrication of SWCNT thin films makes the performance of SWCNT THs fail to meet the expectation. Herein, we synthesized high-quality SWCNT thin films by floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), allowing the dry and direct process of transferring films on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) as THs. A pristine SWCNT TH with a transmittance of 73.5% displayed a reasonable heating performance, reaching the saturated temperatures of similar to 53 and 85 degrees C at the driven voltages of 7 V and 12 V, respectively. Nevertheless, after doping the identical SWCNT film by AuCl3, it rises to similar to 70 and 139 degrees C at 7 V and 12 V, respectively. We held the point that the improved heating performance was mainly attributed to the reduced sheet resistance and film densification by AuCl3 doping. We also found our SWCNT TH showed excellent thermal stability and mechanical flexibility. Due to the continuous synthesis and facile transfer of FCCVD, our SWCNT THs demonstrate potential applications in modern technologies, such as smart windows and defoggers.

Abstract:We review the present status of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) for their production and purification technologies, as well as the fabrication and properties of single-walled carbon nanotube thin film transistors (SWCNT-TFTs). The most popular SWCNT growth method is chemical vapor deposition (CVD), including plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), floating catalyst chemical vapor deposition (FCCVD), and thermal CVD. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) used to fabricate thin film transistors are sorted by electrical breakdown, density gradient ultracentrifugation, or gel-based separation. The technologies of applying CNT random networks to work as the channels of SWCNT-TFTs are also reviewed. Excellent work from global researchers has been benchmarked and analyzed. The unique properties of SWCNT-TFTs have been reviewed. Besides, the promising applications of SWCNT-TFTs have been explored. Finally, the key issues to be solved in future have been summarized.
Flexible, Stretchable, Transparent Conducting Films Made from Superaligned Carbon Nanotubes

Abstract:A straightforward roll-to-roll process for fabricating flexible and stretchable superaligned carbon nanotube films as transparent conducting films is demonstrated. Practical touch panels assembled by using these carbon nanotube conducting films are superior in flexibility and wearability and comparable in linearity to touch panels based on indium tin oxide (ITO) films. After suitable laser trimming and deposition of Ni and Au metal, the carbon nanotube film possesses excellent performance with two typical values of sheet resistances and transmittances (208 Omega rectangle(-1), 90% and 24 Omega rectangle(-1), 83.4%), which are comparable to ITO films and better than the present carbon nanotube conducting films in literature. The results provide a route to produce transparent conducting films more easily, effectively, and cheaply, an important step for realizing industrial-scale applications of carbon nanotubes for transparent conducting films.

Abstract:All-carbon-nanotube thin-film transistors (ACNT-TFTs) are proposed and fabricated on a transparent glass substrate by a facile solution-processed method, with 95% enriched semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) serving as channel materials and mixed SWCNTs as source/drain/gate electrodes. The device demonstrates excellent electronic properties with an on/off current ratio over 105, a threshold voltage of 8 V, a subthreshold swing of 1.13 V/dec, a device mobility of 10 cm(2)/vs, as well as a transparency of 80%. The proposed device is highly promising for the next-generation display application. Additionally, the facile fabrication method and low-temperature process match well with the requirements for manufacturing.

Abstract:SWNT thin films with different nanotube densities are fabricated by CVD while controlling the concentration of catalyst and growth time. Three layers of SWNT films are transferred to flexible substrates serving as electrodes and channel materials, respectively. All-carbon nanotube TFTs with an on/off ratio as high as 10(5) are obtained. Inverters are fabricated on top of the flexible substrates with symmetric input/output behavior.

Abstract:Large‐area flexible transparent conductive films (TCFs) are highly desired for future electronic devices. Nanocarbon TCFs (NC‐TCFs) are one of the most promising candidates, but some of their properties are mutually restricted. Here, a novel carbon nanotube network reorganization (CNNR) strategy, i.e., facet‐driven CNNR (FD‐CNNR) technique, is presented to overcome this intractable contradiction. The FD‐CNNR technique basically introduces an interaction between single‐walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) and Cu‐O. Based on the unique FD‐CNNR mechanism, large‐area flexible reorganized carbon nanofilms (RNC‐TCFs) are designed and fabricated with A3‐size and even meter‐length, including reorganized SWNT (RSWNT) films and graphene and reorganized SWNT (G‐RSWNT) hybrid films. Synergistical improvement in strength, transmittance and conductivity of flexible RNC‐TCFs has been achieved. The G‐RSWNT TCF shows a sheet resistance as low as 69 Ω sq−1 at 86% transmittance, FOM value of 35, and Young's modulus of ∼45 MPa. The high strength enables RNC‐TCFs to be freestanding on water and easily transferred to any target substrate without contamination. An A4‐size flexible smart window is fabricated, which manifests controllable dimming and fog removal. The FD‐CNNR technique can be extended to large‐area or even large‐scale fabrication of TCFs, and can provide new insights into design of TCFs and other functional films.
