Abstract:The degradation of trichloroethylene (TCE) is of paramount importance due to its harmful effect on human health and the environment. In this study, a remarkable oxidation of the toxic TCE was achieved by using a hybrid system integrating a corona discharge reactor and a series of Ag-Mn-Ce/HZSM-5 catalysts. The combi-nation of plasma and catalysis significantly promoted TCE oxidation compared with the plasma alone system. A maximum TCE removal efficiency (100 %) and an energy yield of 204 g center dot kWh-1 were obtained in the plasma -catalytic system by using the Ag4MnCeOx/HZSM-5 (4 wt% Ag loading) catalyst in dry air with a weight hour-ly space velocity of 200000 mL center dot g- 1 center dot h-1. In contrast, the plasma alone system showed only a removal efficiency of 34.8 % and an energy yield of 83 g center dot kWh-1 under the same conditions. By adding Ag, the surface adsorbed oxygen was activated and the reducibility of catalyst was promoted, which enhanced oxygen mobility and improved the oxidation of TCE. Furthermore, relative humidity (RH) had an important effect on TCE oxidation. The highest CO2 selectivity (71.86 %) and CO selectivity (22.21 %) were obtained at an RH of 20 %. The decomposition pathway of TCE in the post-plasma-catalytic system was proposed. This study is expected to provide a feasible method for the control of chlorine-containing waste gas.

Abstract:A series of transition metals (Fe, Co, Ni, Cu, Cr and Mn)-doped CeO2-TiO2 catalysts were prepared by the sol-gel method and applied for the catalytic removal of 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) as a model for chlorinated VOCs (CVOCs). The various characterization methods including X-ray diffraction (XRD), N-2 adsorption-desorption, UV-Raman, NH3 temperature-programmed desorption (NH3-TPD) and H-2 temperature-programmed reduction (H-2-TPR) were utilized to investigate the physicochemical properties of the catalysts. The results show that doping Fe, Co, Ni or Mn can obviously promote the activity of CeO2-TiO2 mixed oxides for DCE degradation, which is related to their improved texture properties, acid sites (especially for strong acidity) and low-temperature reducibility. Particularly, CeTi-Fe doped with moderate Fe exhibits excellent activity for 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) degradation, giving a T-90% value as low as 250 degrees C. More importantly, only trace chlorinated byproducts were produced during the low-temperature degradation of various CVOCs (dichloromethane (DCM), trichloroethylene (TCE) and chlorobenzene (CB)) over CeTi-Fe1/9 catalyst with high durability. Plasma-catalytic oxidation of toluene over MCeZrO x /TiO 2 (M = Cu, Mn, Ni and Co) catalysts using a dielectric barrier discharge reactor

Abstract:Plasma catalysis is recognized as a promising technology for the elimination of diluted volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In this study, a hybrid process was carried out using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) and MCeZr/TiO 2 (M = Cu, Mn, Ni, and Co) catalysts for the degradation of VOCs. The plasma-catalytic system demonstrated a substantial improvement in toluene conversion and CO 2 selectivity compared to the plasma-only system owing to the synergistic effects of plasma and thermal catalysis on toluene degradation. The performance of toluene removal follows the sequence of CuCeZr/T > NiCeZr/T > CoCeZr/T > MnCeZr/T in plasma catalysis. The CuCeZr/T catalyst demonstrated the highest toluene conversion of 99.0% and a CO 2 selectivity of 91.0% at a discharge power of 30 W. Energetic electrons and reactive species generated by plasma actively participate in toluene activation in the gas phase and facilitate adsorption on the catalyst surface. The redox properties between Ce 4+ /Ce 3+ and Cu + /Cu 2+ species dictated the reducibility of the CuCeZr/T catalyst, promoting oxygen cycling during toluene oxidation and leading to enhanced catalytic performance. The pathways of toluene destruction in the plasma-catalysis system are discussed based on the analysis results of GC–MS, optical emission spectroscopy and calculations of the electron-impact reactions.

Abstract:The remediation of chlorinated volatile organic compounds is an intractable issue for it typically requires high temperatures and generates undesirable byproducts. This work utilized a series of representative transition metals (i.e., Cr, Cu, V) to modify the morphology, surface oxygen, and acidity of the CeO2 2 nanorods for trichloroethylene (TCE) treatment. A spectroscopic operando DRIFT- online GCMS reactor was introduced to examine the catalytic performance and elucidate the reaction pathway. Among them, Cr-CeO2 2 exhibited 50 % (T50) 50 ) and 90 % (T90) 90 ) TCE conversions with no byproduct at 171 degrees C and 241 degrees C, respectively. The performances of Cu-CeO2 2 (T90 90 = 391 degrees C), V-CeO2 2 (T90 90 = 423 degrees C) and CeO2 2 (T90 90 = 494 degrees C) were inferior to Cr-CeO2 2 (T90 90 = 241 degrees C), with obvious C2Cl4 2 Cl 4 generated in the TCE oxidation. It reveals that TCE adsorbed on Cr-CeO2 2 is dechlorinated on acidic sites and oxidized to carbonate/formate intermediates by the surface oxygen then facilely to generate carbon oxides, while TCE is adsorbed as chlorinated species (CH2ClCH2O-) 2 ClCH 2 O- ) on the other three catalysts which occupy the surface and require higher temperature to be oxidized. The abundant medium-strong acidic sites and surface oxygen species of Cr-CeO2 2 nanorods are responsible for the low-temperature activation via C-Cl cleavage on acidic sites and fast oxidation of hydrocarbon intermediates in the TCE oxidation, respectively.

Abstract:Trimethylamine (TMA) is a nitrogen-containing malodorous gas that is toxic and hazardous to humans. Plasma catalysis is a promising technique for removing low-concentration malodorous gases. CeO2/MnO2 nanowires with different Ce-Mn contact interfaces prepared by impregnation, physical mixing, and H2O2 etching were investigated for TMA degradation in a plasma catalytic system. The CMO-H sample prepared by H2O2 etching achieved a removal efficiency of 100% at 98 J/L, demonstrating the highest activity. Characterization revealed that H2O2 etching led to the uniform formation of CeO2 nanoparticles on MnO2, promoting the transfer of electrons between Ce and Mn species. Surface lattice oxygen and high-valent manganese were confirmed to be the main active species, consistent with the Mars van Krevelen mechanism. Density functional theory calculations confirmed that the CMO-H sample exhibited the lowest oxygen vacancy formation energy. In situ plasma diffuse reflection infrared transform spectroscopy analysis and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry results showed the possible degradation pathway of TMA. In summary, the H2O2 etching process optimized CeO2-MnO2 interactions and improved the utilization of lattice oxygen active sites, enhancing the catalytic degradation of TMA and providing new insights into the design of an efficient plasma catalytic system for environmental remediation.
Efficient Catalytic Degradation of Trichloroethylene in Persulfate System by Ca-Fe2O3 and Cu-Fe2O3 Nanoparticles: Mechanistic Insights

Abstract:M-metal (Ca and Cu) doped Ca-Fe2O3 and Cu-Fe2O3 catalysts were synthesized using solvothermal method. The Ca-Fe2O3 and Cu-Fe2O3 catalysts were characterized by XRD, Raman spectroscopy, SEM, TEM and XPS spectroscopy. The catalytic performance of 6%Ca-Fe2O3 and 5%Cu-Fe2O3 catalysts for trichloroethylene (TCE) removal were improved by M-metal doping leading to TCE removal at 99.8% in 1 h, which were three folds greater than by simple alpha-Fe2O3 in the presence of persulfate (PS). Ca and Cu doping formed defective structure and created more oxygen vacancies thereby generating abundant active species during PS activation process. Further, the influence of catalysts' dosage, oxidant dosage, solution pH, inorganic anions, and dissolved oxygen were evaluated. Complete removal of TCE was also obtained at weak alkaline pH condition. The greater specific surface area and the improved electrical conductivity was attributed to the huge generation of O-2(center dot-) and O-1(2) species which played major part in TCE removal. Scavenging tests and ESR spectroscopy confirmed the dominant role of O-2(center dot-) and O-1(2) in TCE degradation. The stability and viability of 6%Ca-Fe2O3 and 5%Cu-Fe2O3 catalysts were evaluated by repetition tests and in the presence of surfactants, TCE removal in real water matrix, and in the degradation of multi-pollutants.
Facile fabrication of three-dimensional MnO 2 for trichloroethylene degradation by plasma catalysis

Abstract:Non-thermal plasma (NTP) coupled with catalyst is a cutting-edge technique for the abatement of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (Cl-VOCs), which are typically chemically stable, highly toxic and non-biodegradable. In this study, different morphologies of 3D MnO 2 catalysts were fabricated facilely through a hydrothermal method and coupled with NTP for trichloroethylene (TCE) degradation. Among the various catalysts tested, MnO 2 IV exhibited the highest TCE degradation performance, with removal efficiency, mineralization and energy yield ranging from 44.3% to 94.8%, 28.9% to 90.1% and 5.76 to 2.31 g/kWh, respectively, at voltage levels between 7 and 11 kV. The relationship between the physicochemical properties of the catalysts and their degradation performance was established through various characterization methods. The exceptional catalytic efficiency of MnO 2 IV can be ascribed to its hierarchical flower-like structure, the greatest specific surface area (120 m 2 /g), the weakest Mn-O bonds, increased lattice defects and oxygen vacancies, and lower H 2 reduction temperature. These characteristics facilitate enhanced transfer, adsorption, and utilization of reactive oxygen species in NTP on the surface of MnO 2 IV, promoting the deep oxidation of TCE. The optimization of operational parameters was achieved using response surface methodology, with results indicating that the applied voltage exerted the greatest influence on both the mineralization rate and energy yield. The optimal operating conditions were determined, with initial TCE concentration, applied voltage, and gas flow rate values identified as 393 ppm, 7.3 kV, and 0.83 L/min, respectively. Lastly, the TCE degradation mechanism in the NTP-MnO 2 catalyst system was hypothesized based on the identification of various plasma reactive species and organic intermediates. This study provides new insights for the improvement of the VOCs oxidation performance in plasma catalytic system.

Abstract:A multicomponent system consisting of dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), g-C 3 N 4 /FOD composite catalysis, and persulfate (PS) oxidation was successfully constructed for synergistically degrading trichloroethylene. The successful preparation of the g-C 3 N 4 /FOD composite catalyst material was confirmed through various testing methods, including Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Electrochemical workstation. Under this composite system, trichloroethylene degradation efficiency in water reached 93.2 % after an 8-minute reaction. Thermal gravimetric analysis (TG) and cyclic usage experiments both demonstrated the excellent stability of the g-C 3 N 4 /FOD catalyst removal efficiency of the composite as concentration, DBD discharge voltage and carrier gas flow rate, g-C 3 N 4 /FOD dose, and PS concentration. Optimal treatment conditions were determined through response surface methodology (RSM) experiments. Within a reaction time of 30 min, a total organic carbon (TOC) removal rate of 87.4 % was achieved, effectively reducing intermediate product formation and making the combined process more environmentally friendly than individual treatments. Experimental evidence SO 4 − , OH and O 2− played dominant roles during trichloroethylene degradation in water. Gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis identified potential pathways for trichloroethylene degradation and revealed two major intermediate products. Toxicity prediction results for these degradation products showed lower acute toxicity and chronic toxicity compared to the precursor compound.

Abstract:This research investigates the unique configuration of cobalt ferrite (Co1.5Fe1.5O4) anchored onto the surface of cerium dioxide (CeO2), which effectively activates peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to degrade trichloroethylene (TCE). Co1.5Fe1.5O4-CeO2/PMS was able to completely degrade 5 mg/L of TCE by comparison between PMS and the components of the prepared composites. In addition, the Co1.5Fe1.5O4-CeO2/PMS system was highly adaptable to pH and aqueous substrates. Quenching experiments combined with ESR spectroscopy results demonstrated that ·OH, SO4 ·-, O2 ·-, and 1O2 in the system play an important role in degrading TCE. The Co1.5Fe1.5O4-CeO2/PMS system can maintain 90% degradation efficiency for various pollutants (TCE, carbon tetrachloride (CT), dichloromethane (DCM), 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D)) as well as the actual wastewater, and the multiple cycling experiments have verified that the Co1.5Fe1.5O4-CeO2/PMS has a good stability. XPS comparisons before and after the reaction revealed that cobalt ferrite exhibited a unique transition from the radical pathway to the non-radical pathway during TCE degradation after the introduction of CeO2. This pathway shift can be attributed to the synergistic interaction between cobalt ferrite and CeO2, which adjusts the electronic structure, facilitates the activation of PMS, and generates more reactive oxygen species to decompose TCE. This research offers valuable insights into the design of efficient advanced oxidation catalysts for the removal of organic pollutants from water and the optimization of degradation pathways.

Abstract:Zeolite supported nano zero valent iron copper bimetallic composite (Z-nZVFe-Cu) was synthesized using an ion exchange method. The morphology and physico-chemical properties of the Z-nZVFe-Cu composite were determined using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET), energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray diffractometer (XRD). The results showed that iron and copper nano particles were well dispersed on the zeolite sheet. The degradation efficiency of trichloroethylene (TCE) achieved was more than 95% using Z-nZVFe-Cu as a heterogeneous Fenton like catalyst. An efficient removal of total organic carbon (TOC) was promoted as compared to zeolite supported iron nano composite (Z-nZVFe) and unsupported nano iron (nZVFe). Electron spin resonance (ESR) detection confirmed the intensity of hydroxyl radicals (OH) in the system. While benzoic acid (BA), a probe indicator for the quantification of OH, demonstrated the higher intensity of hydroxyl radicals in Z-nZVFe-Cu as compared to Z-nZVFe and nZVFe. The less iron and copper leaching of from Z-nZVFe-Cu presented its higher stability and better catalytic activity, displaying its potential long term applications for TCE degradation in groundwater.
Low-temperature catalytic combustion of trichloroethylene over cerium oxide and catalyst deactivation

Abstract:Cerium oxide catalysts prepared by a thermal decomposition method using the salt nitrate as precursor were tested for the catalytic combustion of trichloroethlyene (TCE), as a model of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (CVOCs). CeO2 catalysts calcined at different temperature were found to possess high catalytic activity for catalytic combustion of TCE, and CeO2 calcined at 550°C was the most active catalyst and the complete combustion temperature (T90%) of TCE was 205°C. Effects of systematic variation of reaction conditions, including space velocity, inlet TCE concentration and water concentration on TCE catalytic combustion were investigated. Additionally, the stability and deactivation of CeO2 catalysts were studied by various characterization methods (such as TG/DTA, EDS, XRD, Raman and XPS) and other assistant experiments.
Electrolytic trichloroethene degradation using mixed metal oxide coated titanium mesh electrodes

Abstract:Electrochemical systems provide a low cost, versatile, and controllable platform to potentially treat contaminants in water, including chlorinated solvents. Relative to bare metal or noble metal amended materials, dimensionally stable electrode materials such as mixed metal oxide coated titanium (Ti/MMO) have advantages in terms of stability and cost, important factors for sustainable remediation solutions. Here, we report the use of Ti/MMO as an effective cathode substrate for treatment of trichloroethene (TCE). TCE degradation in a batch reactor was measured as the decrease of TCE concentration over time and the corresponding evolution of chloride; notably, this occurred without the formation of commonly encountered chlorinated intermediates. The reaction was initiated when Ti/MMO cathode potentials were less than -0.8 V vs. the standard hydrogen electrode, and the rate of TCE degradation increased linearly with progressively more negative potentials. The maximum pseudo-first-order heterogeneous rate constant was approximately 0.05 cm min(-1), which is comparable to more commonly used cathode materials such as nickel. In laboratory-scale flow-though column reactors designed to simulate permeable reactive barriers (PRBs), TCE concentrations were reduced by 80-90%. The extent of TCE flux reduction increased with the applied potential difference across the electrodes and was largely insensitive to the spacing distance between the electrodes. This is the first report of the electrochemical reduction of a chlorinated organic contaminant at a Ti/MMO cathode, and these results support the use of this material in PRBs as a possible approach to manage TCE plume migration.

Synergetic degradation of Fe/Cu/C for groundwater polluted by trichloroethylene.

Abstract:This study investigated the enhancement of synergetic degradation of Fe/Cu/C (Fe: commercial iron, Cu: solid product of Fe reacted with CuSO4, C: carbon powder) for simulated groundwater contaminated by trichloroethylene (TCE). Zero valent iron (ZVI) as a reducing agent was proved to be effective for TCE removal. The Fe/Cu/C system resulted in higher reduction efficiency as a result of the synergetic role of Fe/Cu and Fe/C microelectrode than the Fe (ZVI) or Fe/Cu system, and the half-life was only about 0.4 h. When m(Fe) achieved 12.5 g L-1, the residual concentration of TCE almost leveled off. Fe:Cu = 10:1 or m(C) = 0.0086 g can induce the optimum function for TCE degradation. A neutral condition was appropriate for TCE degradation, and an acidic system slightly favored TCE dechlorination compared with an alkaline system. GC/MS analysis indicated that TCE was dechlorinated to 1,1-dichloroethene (1,1-DCE), cis-1,2-dichloroethene (cis-DCE) and vinyl chloride (VC), and 1,1-DCE might be the precursor. Fe/Cu/C reduction is a highly promising technique for TCE removal, and it is an excellent alternative to enhance TCE reductive dechlorination.
Enhanced activity of plasma catalysis for trichloroethylene decomposition via metal-support interaction of Si-O-Co/Mn bonds over CoMnO<sub>X</sub>/ZSM-5

Abstract:Metal-support interaction has a substantial influence on catalyst activity while little attention has been paid to it in the plasma catalytic system. Herein, the effect of support on the activity of CoMnOX-based catalysts was investigated for trichloroethylene removal by plasma catalysis, and CoMnOX/ZSM-5 exhibited the highest mineralization rate (36.93-94.24 %), HCl and Cl-2 yield (19.66-94.37 %), energy yield (63.29-29 g/kWh), as well as the lowest export ozone concentration (18.72-108.83 mg/m(3)) under 6-10 kV. The excellent catalytic activity of CoMnOX/ZSM-5 was ascribed to the formation of abundant defects and oxygen vacancies, which was induced by the SiOCo/Mn hybridization promoting Co/MnO bonds cleavage. CoMnOX/ZSM-5 also exhibited superior adsorption ability, large amount of Co3+, Mn4+ and adsorbed oxygen species, high reducibility and suitable acidity. Moreover, CoMnOX/ZSM-5 maintained superior water-resistant ability and high catalytic activity after 50 h operation. The proposed TCE degradation mechanism suggested that the contribution of plasma active oxygen species was involved in TCE oxidation and oxygen cycle of catalyst. This work provides a novel strategy to design catalysts in plasma catalytic system.
Catalytic Oxidation of Chlorinated Volatile Organic Compounds over MO_x-CeO_2/HZSM-5 Catalysts

Abstract:The catalytic performance of MOx-CeO2/HZSM-5 （M= Cr,Mn,Fe,Co,Ni and Cu） catalysts prepared by an impregnation method were evaluated in the oxidation of 1,2-dichloroetane （DCE）.The introduction of secondary transition-metal-oxide component can greatly improve the catalytic activity of CeO2/HZSM-5 for DCE destruction.The catalytic activities of MOx-CeO2/HZSM-5 catalysts decrease as the order of 9%Ni-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 9%Co-12%CeO2/HZSM-5,9%Mn-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 9%Cu-12%CeO2/HZSM-5,9%Cr-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 9%Fe-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 12%CeO2/HZSM-5.Large amounts of polychlorohydrocarbon such as C2HCl3 and C2Cl4 were generated over Ni,Co,Mn and Cu impregnated catalysts.Moreover,small concentration of C2H2Cl4 was found when 9%Cu-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 was used as the catalyst.The generation of polychlorohydrocarbon can cause secondary pollution.Among all the catalysts,9%Cr-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 not only displayed high activity for DCE destruction,but also produced the least polychlorohydrocarbons and showed high selectivity to CO2 and HCl.The improved capability of dehydrochlorination and the deep oxidation of DCE were attributed to strong interactions between CrOx and CeO2,which prompted the migration of active oxygen species on 9%Cr-12%CeO2/HZSM-5 surface.

Abstract:Zeolite supported nano iron-nickel bimetallic composite (Z-nZVI-Ni) was prepared using a liquid-phase reduction process. The corresponding surface morphologies and physico-chemical properties of the Z-nZVI-Ni composite were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Energy dispersive X-ray spectra (EDS), Brunauer Emmett Teller (BET) adsorption, wide angle X-ray diffractometry (WA-XRD), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The results indicated high dispersion of iron and nickel nano particles on the zeolite sheet with an enhanced surface area. Complete destruction of trichloroethene (TCE) and efficient removal of total organic carbon (TOC) were observed by using Z-nZVI-Ni as a heterogeneous catalyst for a Fenton-like oxidation process employing sodium percarbonate (SPC) as an oxidant. The electron spin resonance (ESR) of Z-nZVI-Ni verified the generation and intensity of hydroxyl radicals (OH•). The quantification of OH• elucidated by using p-chlorobenzoic acid, a probe indicator, confirmed the higher intensity of OH•. The transformation products were identified using GC-MS. The slow iron and nickel leaching offered higher stability and better catalytic activity of Z-nZVI-Ni, demonstrating its prospective long term applications in groundwater for TCE degradation.

Abstract:The effect of bisulfite (HSO3-) in nCaO(2)/Fe(III)/HSO3- system on improving HO center dot generation and trichloroethene (TCE) removal was innovatively reported. The enhancement mechanism of HSO3- for TCE removal in nCaO(2)/Fe (III)/HSO3- system was caused not only by the complexing and reducing effects on promoting the conversion of Fe(III) to Fe(II), but also due to the reaction with O-2 in water to produce SO4-center dot for accelerating TCE degradation. A double effect of nCaO(2) as an oxidant source to generate HO center dot and as a O-2 source to promote SO4-center dot generation was revealed. A pseudo-second-order kinetic model of TCE removal was determined and 94.6% TCE degradation was achieved within 60 min at the nCaO(2)/Fe(III)/HSO3-/TCE molar ratio of 6/12/9/1, in which 82.8% TCE was dechlorinated. The scavenger test and EPR detection found that various kinds of reactive oxygen species (ROSs) including HO center dot, SO4-center dot, O-2(-)center dot and O-1(2) were generated, all contributed to TCE removal and HO center dot was the dominant one in nCaO(2)/Fe(III)/HSO3- system. The effects of surfactant presence and the complex matrix in the actual groundwater were evaluated. The experiments of high efficiency for chlorinated olefins and benzene series removals but low applicability for chlorinated alkanes provided an alternative technique to remedy groundwater based on the various kinds of contaminants performance.
