Abstract: Let $W(D_n)$ denote the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$. We prove that the Smith normal form of $W(D_n)$ is $$\textup{diag}[\underbrace{1,1,\ldots,1}_{\frac{n}{2}-1},\underbrace{2,2,\ldots,2}_{\frac{n}{2}-1},0,0]$$ when $n\equiv 0\pmod{4}$. Abstract:Let W(Dn) denote the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph Dn (n≥4), a tree obtained from the path of order n−1 by adding a pendant edge at the second vertex. We prove that rankW(Dn)=n−2 if 4|n and rankW(Dn)=n−1 otherwise. Furthermore, we prove that the Smith normal form of W(Dn) isdiag[1,1,…,1︸⌈n2⌉,2,2,…,2︸⌊n2⌋−1,0] when 4∤n. This confirms a recent conjecture in [W. Wang, F. Liu, W. Wang, Generalized spectral characterizations of almost controllable graphs, European J. Combin. 96(2021): 103348].

Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices. The walk matrix W(G) of G is the matrix [e,Ae,…,An−1e], where A is the adjacency matrix of G and e is the all-one vector. Let W be a walk matrix of order n. We show that at most ⌊n2⌋ invariant factors of W are congruent to 2 modulo 4. As a consequence, it is proved that, for any n×n walk matrix W with 2-rank r, the determinant of W is always a multiple of 2⌈3n−4r2⌉. Moreover, if 2−⌈3n−4r2⌉det⁡W is odd and square-free, then the Smith normal form of W can be recovered uniquely from the triple (n,r,det⁡W).

Abstract:Spectral characterizations of graphs are an important topic in spectral graph theory, which has received a lot of attention in recent years. It is generally very hard to show that a given graph is determined by its spectrum. Recently, Wang [9] gave a simple arithmetic condition for graphs being determined by their generalized spectra. Let G be a graph on n vertices with adjacency matrix A, and W = [e, Ae, ..., An-1e] (e is the all-one vector) be the walk-matrix of G. A theorem of Wang [9] states that if 2-tn/21 det W (which is always an integer) is odd and square-free, then G is determined by the generalized spectrum. In this paper, we find a new and short route which leads to a stronger version of the above theorem. The result is achieved by using the Smith Normal Form of the walk-matrix of G. The proposed method gives a new insight in dealing with the problem of generalized spectral characterization of graphs.(c) 2022 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:This paper surveys some combinatorial aspects of Smith normal form, and more generally, diagonal form. The discussion includes general algebraic properties and interpretations of Smith normal form, critical groups of graphs, and Smith normal form of random integer matrices. We then give some examples of Smith normal form and diagonal form arising from (1) symmetric functions, (2) a result of Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville, and (3) the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement.

Abstract:Let G be an n-vertex graph with adjacency matrix A, and W = [e, Ae, ... , An-1e] be the walk matrix of G, where e is the all-one vector. In Wang [J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B, 122 (2017): 438-451], the author showed that any graph G is uniquely determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS) whenever 2- left perpendicular n/2] det W is odd and square-free. In this paper, we introduce a large family of graphsFn = {n-vertex graphs G: 2- left perpendicular n/2] det W = p2b and rank W = n - 1 over Z/pZ},where b is odd and square-free, p is an odd prime and p does not divide b. We prove that any graph in Fn either is DGS or has exactly one generalized cospectral mate up to isomor-phism. Moreover, we show that the problem of finding the generalized cospectral mate for a graph in Fn is equivalent to that of generating an appropriate rational orthogonal matrix from a given integral vector. This equivalence essentially depends on a surprising property of graphs in terms of generalized spectra, which states that any symmetric integral matrix generalized cospectral with the adjacency matrix of some graph must be an adjacency matrix. Based on this equivalence, we develop an efficient algorithm to decide whether a given graph in Fn is DGS and further to find the unique generalized cospectral mate when it is not. We give some experimental results on graphs with at most 20 vertices, which suggest that Fn may have a posi-tive density (nearly 3%) and possibly almost all graphs in Fn are DGS as n -> infinity. This gives supporting evidence for Haemers' conjecture that almost all graphs are determined by their spectra.

Abstract:A graph G is said to be determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS for short), if whenever H is a graph such that H and G are cospectral with cospecral complements then H is isomorphic to G . Let G be an n -vertex graph with adjacency matrix A and W(G)=[e,Ae,...,An−1e] be the walk-matrix of G , where e is the all-one vector. A theorem of Wang [15] shows that if 2−⌊n2⌋det⁡W(G) is odd and square-free, then G is DGS. The above condition is equivalent to that the Smith normal form of W(G) is diag(1,...,1,2,...,2,2d) , where d is an odd and square-free integer and the number of 1's appeared in the diagonal is precisely ⌈n2⌉ . In this paper, we show that for a tree with irreducible characteristic polynomial over Q , the above oddness and square-freeness assumptions on d can actually be removed, which significantly improves upon the above theorem for trees.

Abstract:"Which graphs are determined by their spectra (DS for short)?" is an important and challenging topic in spectral graph theory. Let G be an n -vertex graph with adjacency matrix A(G) and adjacency walk matrix WA(G)=[e,A(G)e,...,An−1(G)e] . We call G controllable if the rank of WA(G) is n over R and noncontrollable otherwise. In Wang (2017), the author gave a simple condition for a controllable graph to be determined by their generalized adjacency spectrum (DGAS for short). However, the result fails for noncontrollable graphs. In this paper, we consider the problem in the context of the generalized distance spectrum. Let G be a connected graph with distance matrix D . A graph G is determined by its generalized distance spectrum (DG D S for short) if any graph H sharing the same generalized distance spectrum with G must be isomorphic to G . The paper aims to extend the result in Wang (2017) from generalized adjacency spectrum to generalized distance spectrum. Besides, a simple arithmetic criterion is given to determine whether a connected graph is DG D S or not, which is applicable to some kind of noncontrollable graphs, e.g., regular graphs.

Abstract:The walk matrix of an $n$-vertex graph $G$ with adjacency matrix $A$, denoted by $W(G)$, is $[e,Ae,\ldots,A^{n-1}e]$, where $e$ is the all-ones vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the rooted product of $G$ and a rooted path $P_m$ (taking an endvertex as the root), i.e., $G\circ P_m$ is a graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of $P_m$ by identifying each vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of a copy of $P_m$. Mao-Liu-Wang (2015) and Mao-Wang (2022) proved that, for $m=2$ and $m\in\{3,4\}$, respectively$$\det W(G\circ P_m)=\pm a_0^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W(G))^m,$$ where $a_0$ is the constant term of the characteristic polynomial of $G$. Furthermore, Mao-Wang (2022) conjectured that the formula holds for any $m\ge 2$. In this note, we verify this conjecture using the technique of Chebyshev polynomials.

Abstract:A fundamental and challenging problem in spectral graph theory is to characterize which graphs are uniquely determined by their spectra. In Wang (2017), the author proved that an n-vertex graph G is uniquely determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS) whenever 2−⌊n2⌋detW is odd and square-free. Here, W is the walk matrix of G, namely, W=[e,Ae,…,An−1e] with e the all-one vector and A the adjacency matrix of G. In this paper, we focus on a larger family of graphs with dn square-free, where dn refers to the last invariant factor of W. We introduce a new kind of polynomial for a graph G associated with a prime p. Such a polynomial is invariant under generalized cospectrality. Using the newly defined polynomial, we obtain a sufficient condition for a graph in the larger family to be DGS. The main result of this paper improves upon the aforementioned result of Wang while the proof for the main result gives a new way to attack the problem of generalized spectral characterization of graphs.

Abstract:In 2013, it was shown that, for a given real number α>2, there are only finitely many distance-regular graphs Γ with valency k and diameter D≥3 having at most αk vertices, except for the following two cases: (i) D=3 and Γ is imprimitive; (ii) D=4 and Γ is antipodal and bipartite. In this paper, we will generalize this result to 2-walk-regular graphs. In this case, also incidence graphs of certain group divisible designs appear.

Abstract:A graph $G$ is said to be determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS for short) if for any graph $H$, $H$ and $G$ are cospectral with cospectral complements implies that $H$ is isomorphic to $G$. It turns out that whether a graph $G$ is DGS is closely related to the arithmetic properties of its walk-matrix. More precisely, let $A$ be the adjacency matrix of a graph $G$, and let $W =[e, Ae, A^2e,...,A^{n-1}e]$ ($e$ is the all-one vector) be its \textit{walk-matrix}. Denote by $\mathcal{G}_n$ the set of all graphs on $n$ vertices with $\det(W)\neq 0$. In [Wang, Generalized spectral characterization of graphs revisited, The Electronic J. Combin., 20 (4),(2013), #$P_4$], the author defined a large family of graphs $$\mathcal{F}_n = \{G \in{\mathcal{G}_n}|\frac{\det(W)}{2^{\lfloor\frac{n}{2}\rfloor}}{is~ an ~odd~ square-free~ integer}\}$$ (which may have positive density among all graphs, as suggested by some numerical experiments) and conjectured every graph in $\mathcal{F}_n$ is DGS. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is actually true, thereby giving a simple arithmetic condition for determining whether a graph is DGS.

Abstract:We propose in this paper a new normal form for dynamical systems or vector fields which improves the classical normal forms in the sense that it is a further reduction of the classical normal forms. We give an algorithm for an effective computation of these normal forms. Our approach is rational in the sense that if the coefficients of the system are in a field K (which, in practice, is Q , R ), so is the normal form and all computations are done in K . As a particular case, if the matrix of the linear part is a companion matrix then we reduce the dynamical system to a single differential equation. Our method is applicable for both the nilpotent and the non-nilpotent cases. We have implemented our algorithm in Maple V and obtained many examples of the further reduced normal forms up to some finite order.

Abstract:The watchman's walk problem in a digraph calls for finding a minimum length closed dominating walk, where direction of arcs is respected. The watchman's walk of a de Bruijn graph of order $k$ is described by a de Bruijn sequence of order $k-1$. This idea is extended to certain subdigraphs of de Bruijn graphs.

Abstract:In this note, we construct bipartite 2-walk-regular graphs with exactly 6 distinct eigenvalues as the point-block incidence graphs of group divisible designs with the dual property. For many of them, we show that they are 2-arc-transitive dihedrants. We note that some of these graphs are not described in Du et al. (2008), in which they classified the connected 2-arc transitive dihedrants.

Abstract:This paper introduces nondeterministic walks, a new variant of one-dimensional discrete walks. The main difference to classical walks is that its nondeterministic steps consist of sets of steps from a predefined set such that all possible extensions are explored in parallel. We discuss in detail the most natural nondeterministic step sets (Dyck and Motzkin step sets), and show that several nondeterministic classes of lattice paths, such as nondeterministic bridges, excursions, and meanders are algebraic. The key concept is the generalization of the ending point of a walk to its reachable points, i.e., a set of ending points. We extend our results to general step sets: We show that nondeterministic bridges and several subclasses of nondeterministic meanders are always algebraic. We conjecture the same is true for nondeterministic excursions, and we present python and Maple packages to support our conjecture. This research is motivated by the study of networks involving encapsulation and decapsulation of protocols. Our results are obtained using generating functions, analytic combinatorics, and additive combinatorics. Keywords.
