Abstract:This paper surveys some combinatorial aspects of Smith normal form, and more generally, diagonal form. The discussion includes general algebraic properties and interpretations of Smith normal form, critical groups of graphs, and Smith normal form of random integer matrices. We then give some examples of Smith normal form and diagonal form arising from (1) symmetric functions, (2) a result of Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville, and (3) the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement.

Abstract:The reduction of a multidimensional system is closely related to the reduction of a multivariate polynomial matrix, for which the Smith normal form of the matrix plays a key role. In this paper, we investigate the reduction of weakly linear multivariate polynomial matrices to their Smith normal forms. Using hierarchical-recursive method and Quillen-Suslin Theorem, we derive some necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring that such matrices can be reduced to their Smith normal forms, and these conditions are easily checked by computing the reduced Gröbner bases of the relevant polynomial ideals. Based on the new results, we propose an algorithm for reducing weakly linear multivariate polynomial matrices to their Smith normal forms.

Abstract:The watchman's walk problem in a digraph calls for finding a minimum length closed dominating walk, where direction of arcs is respected. The watchman's walk of a de Bruijn graph of order $k$ is described by a de Bruijn sequence of order $k-1$. This idea is extended to certain subdigraphs of de Bruijn graphs.

Abstract:The walk matrix associated to an $n\times n$ integer matrix $X$ and an integer vector $b$ is defined by $W := (b,X b, . . . ,X^{n-1} b)$. We study limiting laws for the cokernel of $W$ in the scenario where $X$ is a random matrix with independent entries and $b$ is deterministic. Our first main result provides a formula for the distribution of the $p^{m}$-torsion part of the cokernel, as a group, when $X$ has independent entries from a specific distribution. The second main result relaxes the distributional assumption and concerns the $\mathbb{Z}[x]$-module structure.

Abstract:"Which graphs are determined by their spectra (DS for short)?" is an important and challenging topic in spectral graph theory. Let G be an n -vertex graph with adjacency matrix A(G) and adjacency walk matrix WA(G)=[e,A(G)e,...,An−1(G)e] . We call G controllable if the rank of WA(G) is n over R and noncontrollable otherwise. In Wang (2017), the author gave a simple condition for a controllable graph to be determined by their generalized adjacency spectrum (DGAS for short). However, the result fails for noncontrollable graphs. In this paper, we consider the problem in the context of the generalized distance spectrum. Let G be a connected graph with distance matrix D . A graph G is determined by its generalized distance spectrum (DG D S for short) if any graph H sharing the same generalized distance spectrum with G must be isomorphic to G . The paper aims to extend the result in Wang (2017) from generalized adjacency spectrum to generalized distance spectrum. Besides, a simple arithmetic criterion is given to determine whether a connected graph is DG D S or not, which is applicable to some kind of noncontrollable graphs, e.g., regular graphs.

Abstract:For any integer $k\geq 1,$ define $L_k: \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}\to \mathbb{R}^\mathbb{N}$ by $(a_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\mapsto (a'_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ where $a'_n=\det(a_{n+i+j})_{i,j=0}^{k-1}$. Previously, Zhu showed that $L_k$ preserves the Stieltjes moment (SM) property of sequences (Proc. Am. Math. Soc., 2019). The proof used the characterization of SM sequences in terms of positive semidefinite Hankel matrices. In this note, we give another proof by viewing SM sequences as weighted enumerations of closed walks on $\mathbb{N}$. Our proof is essentially a double-counting argument that views a $k$-tuple of non-crossing Dyck paths as a single closed walk on some bipartite subgraph of $\mathbb{N}^k.$

Abstract:Let $D$ be a digraph of order $n$ with adjacency matrix $A(D)$. For $\alpha\in[0,1)$, the $A_{\alpha}$ matrix of $D$ is defined as $A_{\alpha}(D)=\alpha {\Delta}^{+}(D)+(1-\alpha)A(D)$, where ${\Delta}^{+}(D)=\mbox{diag}~(d_1^{+},d_2^{+},\dots,d_n^{+})$ is the diagonal matrix of vertex outdegrees of $D$. Let $\sigma_{1\alpha}(D),\sigma_{2\alpha}(D),\dots,\sigma_{n\alpha}(D)$ be the singular values of $A_{\alpha}(D)$. Then the trace norm of $A_{\alpha}(D)$, which we call $\alpha$ trace norm of $D$, is defined as $\|A_{\alpha}(D)\|_*=\sum_{i=1}^{n}\sigma_{i\alpha}(D)$. In this paper, we find the singular values of some basic digraphs and characterize the digraphs $D$ with $\mbox{Rank}~(A_{\alpha}(D))=1$. As an application of these results, we obtain a lower bound for the trace norm of $A_{\alpha}$ matrix of digraphs and determine the extremal digraphs. In particular, we determine the oriented trees for which the trace norm of $A_{\alpha}$ matrix attains minimum. We obtain a lower bound for the $\alpha$ spectral norm $\sigma_{1\alpha}(D)$ of digraphs and characterize the extremal digraphs. As an application of this result, we obtain an upper bound for the $\alpha$ trace norm of digraphs and characterize the extremal digraphs.

Abstract:A graph G is said to be determined by its generalized spectrum (DGS for short), if whenever H is a graph such that H and G are cospectral with cospecral complements then H is isomorphic to G . Let G be an n -vertex graph with adjacency matrix A and W(G)=[e,Ae,...,An−1e] be the walk-matrix of G , where e is the all-one vector. A theorem of Wang [15] shows that if 2−⌊n2⌋det⁡W(G) is odd and square-free, then G is DGS. The above condition is equivalent to that the Smith normal form of W(G) is diag(1,...,1,2,...,2,2d) , where d is an odd and square-free integer and the number of 1's appeared in the diagonal is precisely ⌈n2⌉ . In this paper, we show that for a tree with irreducible characteristic polynomial over Q , the above oddness and square-freeness assumptions on d can actually be removed, which significantly improves upon the above theorem for trees.

Abstract:We present an algorithm for computing a Smith form with multipliers of a regular matrix polynomial over a field. This algorithm differs from previous ones in that it computes a local Smith form for each irreducible factor in the determinant separately and then combines them into a global Smith form, whereas other algorithms apply a sequence of unimodular row and column operations to the original matrix. The performance of the algorithm in exact arithmetic is reported for several test cases.

Abstract:This paper delves into the equivalence problem of Smith forms for multivariate polynomial matrices. Generally speaking, multivariate ($n \geq 2$) polynomial matrices and their Smith forms may not be equivalent. However, under certain specific condition, we derive the necessary and sufficient condition for their equivalence. Let $F\in K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]^{l\times m}$ be of rank $r$, $d_r(F)\in K[x_1]$ be the greatest common divisor of all the $r\times r$ minors of $F$, where $K$ is a field, $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ are variables and $1 \leq r \leq \min\{l,m\}$. Our key findings reveal the result: $F$ is equivalent to its Smith form if and only if all the $i\times i$ reduced minors of $F$ generate $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ for $i=1,\ldots,r$.

Abstract:A result of A. Joseph says that any nilpotent or semisimple element $z$ in the Weyl algebra $A_1$ over some algebracally closed field $K$ of characterstic 0 has a normal form up to the action of the automorphism group of $A_1$. It is shown in this note that the normal form corresponds to some unique pair of integers $(k,n)$ with $k\ge n\ge 0$, and will be called the Joseph norm form of $z$. Similar results for the symplectic Poisson algebra $S_1$ are obtained. The Dixmier conjecture can be reformulated as follows: For any nilpotent element $z\in A_1$ whose Joseph norm corresponds to $(k,n)$ with $k>n\ge 1$, there exists no $w\in A_1$ with $ [z,w]=1$. It is known to hold true if $k$ and $n$ are coprime. In this note we show that the assertion also holds if $k$ or $n$ is prime. Analogous results for the Jacobian conjecture for $K[X,Y]$ are obtained.

Abstract:In a graph, a watchman's walk is a minimum closed dominating walk. Given a graph $G$ and a single watchman, the length of a watchman's walk in $G$ (the watchman number) is denoted by $w(G)$ and the typical goals of the watchman's walk problem is to determine $w(G)$ and find a watchman's walk in $G$. In this paper, we extend the watchman's walk problem to directed graphs. In a directed graph, we say that the watchman can only move to and see the vertices that are adjacent to him relative to outgoing arcs. That is, a watchman's walk is oriented and domination occurs in the direction of the arcs. The directed graphs this paper focuses on are families of tournaments and orientations of complete multipartite graphs. We give bounds on the watchman number and discuss its relationship to variants of the domination number.

Abstract:We classify the elements of $W(\tilde{A}_n)$ by giving a canonical reduced expression for each, using basic tools among which affine length. We give some direct consequences for such a canonical form: a description of left multiplication by a simple reflection, a study of the right descent set, and a proof that the affine length is preserved along the tower of affine Coxeter groups of type $\tilde A$, which implies in particular that the corresponding tower of affine Hecke algebras is a faithful tower.

Abstract:The search for a highly discriminating and easily computable invariant to distinguish graphs remains a challenging research topic. Here we focus on cospectral graphs whose complements are also cospectral (generalized cospectral), and on coinvariant graphs (same Smith normal form) whose complements are also coinvariant (generalized coinvariant). We show a new characterization of generalized cospectral graphs in terms of codeterminantal graphs. We also establish the Smith normal form of some graph classes for certain associated matrices, and as an application, we prove that the Smith normal form can be used to uniquely determine star graphs. Finally, for graphs up to 10 vertices, we present enumeration results on the number of generalized cospectral graphs and generalized coinvariant graphs with respect to several associated matrices.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 397-418, March 2024. We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Based on these generating functions, we define and study corresponding centrality measures. Illustrative computational results are also provided.

Abstract:Let F be an arbitrary field and (Gn,d/n)n be a sequence of sparse weighted Erdős–Rényi random graphs on n vertices with edge probability d/n , where weights from F∖{0} are assigned to the edges according to a matrix Jn . We show that the normalized rank of the adjacency matrix of (Gn,d/n)n converges to a constant, and derive the limiting expression. Our result shows that for the general class of sparse symmetric matrices under consideration, the asymptotics of the normalized rank are independent of the edge weights and even the field, in the sense that the limiting constant for the general case coincides with the one previously established for adjacency matrices of sparse nonweighted Erdős–Rényi matrices over R . Our proof, which is purely combinatorial in its nature, is based on an intricate extension of a novel perturbation approach to the symmetric setting.

Abstract:This article deals with the enumeration of directed lattice walks on the integers with any finite set of steps, starting at a given altitude $j$ and ending at a given altitude $k$, with additional constraints such as, for example, to never attain altitude $0$ in-between. We first discuss the case of walks on the integers with steps $-h, \dots, -1, +1, \dots, +h$. The case $h=1$ is equivalent to the classical Dyck paths, for which many ways of getting explicit formulas involving Catalan-like numbers are known. The case $h=2$ corresponds to "basketball" walks, which we treat in full detail. Then we move on to the more general case of walks with any finite set of steps, also allowing some weights/probabilities associated with each step. We show how a method of wide applicability, the so-called "kernel method", leads to explicit formulas for the number of walks of length $n$, for any $h$, in terms of nested sums of binomials. We finally relate some special cases to other combinatorial problems, or to problems arising in queuing theory.

Abstract:It is proved that if there is an $\aleph_2$-Aronszajn line, then there is one that does not contain an $\aleph_2$-Countryman line. This solves a problem of Moore and stands in a sharp contrast with his Basis Theorem for linear orders of size $\aleph_1$. The proof combines walks on ordinals, club guessing, strong colourings of three different types, and a bit of finite combinatorics. This and further non-structure theorems for Aronszajn lines and trees are established for successors of regulars, successors of singulars, as well as inaccessibles.
