Abstract:This paper surveys some combinatorial aspects of Smith normal form, and more generally, diagonal form. The discussion includes general algebraic properties and interpretations of Smith normal form, critical groups of graphs, and Smith normal form of random integer matrices. We then give some examples of Smith normal form and diagonal form arising from (1) symmetric functions, (2) a result of Carlitz, Roselle, and Scoville, and (3) the Varchenko matrix of a hyperplane arrangement.

Abstract:The reduction of a multidimensional system is closely related to the reduction of a multivariate polynomial matrix, for which the Smith normal form of the matrix plays a key role. In this paper, we investigate the reduction of weakly linear multivariate polynomial matrices to their Smith normal forms. Using hierarchical-recursive method and Quillen-Suslin Theorem, we derive some necessary and sufficient conditions ensuring that such matrices can be reduced to their Smith normal forms, and these conditions are easily checked by computing the reduced Gröbner bases of the relevant polynomial ideals. Based on the new results, we propose an algorithm for reducing weakly linear multivariate polynomial matrices to their Smith normal forms.

Abstract:Let G be a connected reductive algebraic group and let G'=[G,G] be its derived subgroup. Let (G,V) be a multiplicity free representation with a one dimensional quotient (see definition below). We prove that the algebra D(V)^{G'} of G'-invariant differential operators with polynomial coefficients on V, is a quotient of a so-called Smith algebra over its center. Over C this class of algebras was introduced by S.P. Smith as a class of algebras similar to the enveloping algebra U(sl(2)) of sl(2). Our result generalizes the case of the Weil representation, where the associative algebra generated by Q(x) and Q(?) (Q being a non degenerate quadratic form on V) is a quotient of U(sl(2)) Other structure results are obtained when (G,V) is a regular prehomogeneous vector space of commutative parabolic type.

Abstract:This paper delves into the equivalence problem of Smith forms for multivariate polynomial matrices. Generally speaking, multivariate ($n \geq 2$) polynomial matrices and their Smith forms may not be equivalent. However, under certain specific condition, we derive the necessary and sufficient condition for their equivalence. Let $F\in K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]^{l\times m}$ be of rank $r$, $d_r(F)\in K[x_1]$ be the greatest common divisor of all the $r\times r$ minors of $F$, where $K$ is a field, $x_1,\ldots,x_n$ are variables and $1 \leq r \leq \min\{l,m\}$. Our key findings reveal the result: $F$ is equivalent to its Smith form if and only if all the $i\times i$ reduced minors of $F$ generate $K[x_1,\ldots,x_n]$ for $i=1,\ldots,r$.

Normal forms for ordinary differential operators, I

Abstract:In this paper we develop the generalised Schur theory offered in the recent paper by the second author in dimension one case, and apply it to obtain two applications in different directions of algebra/algebraic geometry. The first application is a new explicit parametrisation of torsion free rank one sheaves on projective irreducible curves with vanishing cohomology groups. The second application is a commutativity criterion for operators in the Weyl algebra or, more generally, in the ring of ordinary differential operators, which we prove in the case when operators have a normal form with the restriction top line (for details see Introduction). Both applications are obtained with the help of normal forms. Namely, considering the ring of ordinary differential operators $D_1=K[[x]][\partial ]$ as a subring of a certain complete non-commutative ring $\hat{D}_1^{sym}$, the normal forms of differential operators mentioned here are obtained after conjugation by some invertible operator ("Schur operator"), calculated using one of the operators in a ring. Normal forms of commuting operators are polynomials with constant coefficients in the differentiation, integration and shift operators, which have a restricted finite order in each variable, and can be effectively calculated for any given commuting operators.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a $(d\times N)$-matrix. We consider the variable polytope $\Pi_X(u) = \{w \ge 0 : X w = u \}$. It is known that the function $T_X$ that assigns to a parameter $u \in \mathbb{R}^d$ the volume of the polytope $\Pi_X(u)$ is piecewise polynomial. The Brion-Vergne formula implies that the number of lattice points in $\Pi_X(u)$ can be obtained by applying a certain differential operator to the function $T_X$. In this article we slightly improve the Brion-Vergne formula and we study two spaces of differential operators that arise in this context: the space of relevant differential operators (i.e. operators that do not annihilate $T_X$) and the space of nice differential operators (i.e. operators that leave $T_X$ continuous). These two spaces are finite-dimensional homogeneous vector spaces and their Hilbert series are evaluations of the Tutte polynomial of the arithmetic matroid defined by the matrix $X$. They are closely related to the $\mathcal{P}$-spaces studied by Ardila-Postnikov and Holtz-Ron in the context of zonotopal algebra and power ideals.

Smith forms of matrices in Companion Rings, with group theoretic and topological applications

Abstract:Let $R$ be a commutative ring and $g(t) \in R[t]$ a monic polynomial. The commutative ring of polynomials $f(C_g)$ in the companion matrix $C_g$ of $g(t)$, where $f(t)\in R[t]$, is called the Companion Ring of $g(t)$. Special instances include the rings of circulant matrices, skew-circulant matrices, pseudo-circulant matrices, or lower triangular Toeplitz matrices. When $R$ is an Elementary Divisor Domain, we develop new tools for computing the Smith forms of matrices in Companion Rings. In particular, we obtain a formula for the second last non-zero determinantal divisor, we provide an $f(C_g) \leftrightarrow g(C_f)$ swap theorem, and a composition theorem. When $R$ is a principal ideal domain we also obtain a formula for the number of non-unit invariant factors. By applying these to families of circulant matrices that arise as relation matrices of cyclically presented groups, in many cases we compute the groups' abelianizations. When the group is the fundamental group of a three dimensional manifold, this provides the homology of the manifold. In other cases we obtain lower bounds for the rank of the abelianisation and record consequences for finiteness or solvability of the group, or for the Heegaard genus of a corresponding manifold.

Abstract: Let $W(D_n)$ denote the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$. We prove that the Smith normal form of $W(D_n)$ is $$\textup{diag}[\underbrace{1,1,\ldots,1}_{\frac{n}{2}-1},\underbrace{2,2,\ldots,2}_{\frac{n}{2}-1},0,0]$$ when $n\equiv 0\pmod{4}$. This gives an affirmative answer to a question in [W. Wang, C. Wang, S. Guo, On the walk matrix of the Dynkin graph $D_n$, Linear Algebra Appl. 653 (2022) 193--206].

In this paper, we prove that $Sp(\chi)$ acts transitively on $Um_{2n}(R)$ if $k$ is algebraically closed, $d! \in k^{\times}$ and $2n \geq d$.

Abstract:Let G be a graph with n vertices. The walk matrix W(G) of G is the matrix [e,Ae,…,An−1e], where A is the adjacency matrix of G and e is the all-one vector. Let W be a walk matrix of order n. We show that at most ⌊n2⌋ invariant factors of W are congruent to 2 modulo 4. As a consequence, it is proved that, for any n×n walk matrix W with 2-rank r, the determinant of W is always a multiple of 2⌈3n−4r2⌉. Moreover, if 2−⌈3n−4r2⌉det⁡W is odd and square-free, then the Smith normal form of W can be recovered uniquely from the triple (n,r,det⁡W).

Abstract:We study the notion of a "differential 2-rig", a category R with coproducts and a monoidal structure distributing over them, also equipped with an endofunctor D : R -> R that satisfies a categorified analogue of the Leibniz rule. This is intended as a tool to unify various applications of such categories to computer science, algebraic topology, and enumerative combinatorics. The theory of differential 2-rigs has a geometric flavour but boils down to a specialization of the theory of tensorial strengths on endofunctors; this builds a surprising connection between apparently disconnected fields. We build "free 2-rigs" on a signature, and we prove various initiality results: for example, a certain category of colored species is the free differential 2-rig on a single generator.

Abstract:We define the notion of dextral symmetric algebras (not necessarily associative), motivated by the idea of symmetric rings. We derive a complete classification of dextral symmetric algebras of Leavitt path algebras, and right Leibniz algebras up to dimension $4$. We also obtain that a finite-dimensional dextral symmetric right Leibniz algebra is solvable if and only if it satisfies a weaker notion of nilpotency.

Abstract:We describe an implementation of a computer search for the "small" excluded minors for a class of matroids representable over a partial field. Using these techniques, we enumerate the excluded minors on at most 15 elements for both the class of dyadic matroids, and the class of 2-regular matroids. We conjecture that there are no other excluded minors for the class of 2-regular matroids; whereas, on the other hand, we show that there is a 16-element excluded minor for the class of dyadic matroids.

Abstract:Thin sums matroids were introduced to extend the notion of representability to non-finitary matroids. We give a new criterion for testing when the thin sums construction gives a matroid. We show that thin sums matroids over thin families are precisely the duals of representable matroids (those arising from vector spaces). We also show that the class of tame thin sums matroids is closed under duality and under taking minors, by giving a new characterisation of the matroids in this class. Finally, we show that all the matroids naturally associated to an infinite graph are tame thin sums matroids.
