Abstract:We construct Rankin-Cohen type differential operators on Hermitian modular forms of signature $(n,n)$. The bilinear differential operators given here specialize to the original Rankin-Cohen operators in the case $n=1$, and more generally satisfy some analogous properties, including uniqueness. Our approach builds on previous work by Eholzer-Ibukiyama in the case of Siegel modular forms, together with results of Kashiwara-Vergne on the representation theory of unitary groups.

Abstract:The paper aims to provide a full characterization of all operators $T\colon \mathscr{P}(\mathbb{C}) \to \mathscr{P}(\mathbb{C})$ acting on the space of all complex polynomials that satisfy the Leibniz rule \[ T(f\cdot g)= T(f)\cdot g+f\cdot T(g) \] for all $f, g\in \mathscr{P}(\mathbb{C})$. We do not assume the linearity of $T$. As we will see, contrary to the well-known theorems for function spaces there are many other solutions here, not only differential operators. From our main result, we also derive two corollaries, showing that in some special cases operators that satisfy the Leibniz rule have some particular form.

Abstract:For a smooth scheme $X$ over a perfect field $k$ of positive characteristic, we define (for each $m\in\mathbb{Z}$) a sheaf of rings $\mathcal{\widehat{D}}_{W(X)}^{(m)}$ of differential operators (of level $m$) over the Witt vectors of $X$. If $\mathfrak{X}$ is a lift of $X$ to a smooth formal scheme over $W(k)$, then for $m\geq0$ modules over $\mathcal{\widehat{D}}_{W(X)}^{(m)}$ are closely related to modules over Berthelot's ring $\widehat{\mathcal{D}}_{\mathfrak{X}}^{(m)}$ of differential operators of level $m$ on $\mathfrak{X}$. Our construction therefore gives an description of suitable categories of modules over these algebras, which depends only on the special fibre $X$. There is an embedding of the category of crystals on $X$ (over $W_{r}(k)$) into modules over $\mathcal{\widehat{D}}_{W(X)}^{(0)}/p^{r}$; and so we obtain an alternate description of this category as well. For a map $\varphi:X\to Y$ we develop the formalism of pullback and pushforward of $\mathcal{\widehat{D}}_{W(X)}^{(m)}$-modules and show all of the expected properties. When working mod $p^{r}$, this includes compatibility with the corresponding formalism for crystals, assuming $\varphi$ is smooth. In this case we also show that there is a ``relative de Rham Witt resolution'' (analogous to the usual relative de Rham resolution in $\mathcal{D}$-module theory) and therefore that the pushforward of (a quite general subcategory of) modules over $\mathcal{\widehat{D}}_{W(X)}^{(0)}/p^{r}$ can be computed via the reduction mod $p^{r}$ of Langer-Zink's relative de Rham Witt complex. Finally we explain a generalization of Bloch's theorem relating integrable de Rham-Witt connections to crystals.

Abstract:Let $K$ be a $p$-adic field, and let $K_\infty/K$ be a Galois extension that is almost totally ramified, and whose Galois group is a $p$-adic Lie group of dimension $1$. We prove that $K_\infty$ is not dense in $(\mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{dR}}^+ / \operatorname{Fil}^2 \mathbf{B}_{\mathrm{dR}}^+ )^{\operatorname{Gal}(\overline{K}/K_\infty)}$. Moreover, the restriction of $\theta$ to the closure of $K_\infty$ is injective, and its image via $\theta$ is the set of vectors of $\widehat{K}_\infty$ that are $C^1$ with zero derivative for the action of $\operatorname{Gal}(K_\infty/K)$. The main ingredient for proving these results is the construction of an explicit lattice of $\mathcal{O}_{K_\infty}$ that is commensurable with $\mathcal{O}_{K_\infty}^{d=0}$, where $d : \mathcal{O}_{K_\infty} \to \Omega_{\mathcal{O}_{K_\infty} / \mathcal{O}_K}$ is the differential.

Abstract:A theorem of Paul Roberts states that the integral closure of a regular local ring in a generically abelian extension is Cohen-Macaulay, provided the characteristic of the residue field does not divide the order of the Galois group. An example of Koh shows the conclusion is false in the modular case. After a modification to the statement concerning ramification over $p$ in codimension one, we give an extension of Roberts's theorem to the modular case for unramified regular local rings in mixed characteristic when the $p$-torsion of the Galois group is annihilated by $p$.

The authors previously proved that the number d d of isomorphism classes of (nonsemisimple, reducible) residual representations ρ ̄ {\overline \rho } giving rise to lines in H H which are modular by some ρ f \rho _f (also unramified outside Σ \Sigma ) satisfies d ≥ n := dim F ⁡ H d \geq n:= \dim _{\mathbf {F}} H . This was proved under the assumption that the order of a congruence module is greater than or equal to that of a divisible Selmer group. We show here that if in addition the relevant local Eisenstein ideal J J is nonprincipal, then d > n d >n . When F = Q F=\mathbf {Q} we prove the desired bounds on the congruence module and the Selmer group. We also formulate a congruence condition implying the nonprincipality of J J that can be checked in practice, allowing us to furnish examples where d > n d>n .

Abstract:We classify (up to quasi-isomorphism) the free differential modules whose homology is equal to a given module $M$ by developing a theory for deforming an arbitrary free complex into a differential module. We use an iterative approach to parameterize the deformations and obstructions in terms of certain Ext groups, giving an algorithmic realization of a result of Brown-Erman. We apply this theory to study certain rigidity properties of free resolutions and related rank conjectures.

On the Birch-Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture for modular abelian surfaces

Abstract:Let $A$ be a modular abelian surface over $Q$ which either has trivial geometric endomorphism ring, or arises as the restriction of scalars of an elliptic curve over an imaginary quadratic field which is modular and is not a $Q$-curve. In the former case, assume that there exists an odd Dirichlet character $\chi$ such that $L(A,\chi,1)\neq 0$. We prove the following implication: if $L(A, 1) \ne 0$, and the $p$-adic eigenvariety for $GSp_4$ is smooth at the point corresponding to $A$ (and some auxiliary technical hypotheses hold), then $A(Q)$ is finite, as predicted by the Birch--Swinnerton-Dyer conjecture, and the $p$-part of the Tate--Shafarevich group is also finite. We also prove one inclusion of the cyclotomic Iwasawa Main Conjecture for $A$. Moreover, we also prove analogous results for cohomological automorphic representations of $GSp_4$, removing many of the restrictive hypotheses in our earlier work [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2003.05960" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2003.05960">2003.05960</a>]; for cohomological representations we do not need to assume smoothness of the eigenvariety, since it is automatic in this case. The main ingredient in the proof is the Euler system attached to the spin representations of genus $2$ Siegel modular forms constructed in our earlier work with Skinner.

Duality for differential modules over complete non-archimedean valuation field of characteristic zero

Abstract:Let $K$ be a complete non-archimedean valuation field of characteristic $0$, with non-trivial valuation, equipped with (possibly multiple) commuting bounded derivations. We prove a decomposition theorem for finite differential modules over $K$, where decompositions regarding the extrinsic subsidiary $\partial$-generic radii of convergence in the sense of Kedlaya-Xiao. Our result is a refinement of a previous decomposition theorem due to Kedlaya and Xiao. As a key step in the proof, we prove a decomposition theorem in a stronger form in the case where $K$ is equipped with a single derivation. To achieve this goal, we construct an object $f_{0*}L_0$ representing the usual dual functor and study some filtrations of $f_{0*}L_0$, which is used to construct the direct summands appearing in our decomposition theorem.

Abstract:Using the language of operated algebras, we construct and investigate a class of operator rings and enriched modules induced by a derivation or Rota-Baxter operator. In applying the general framework to univariate polynomials, one is led to the integro-differential analogs of the classical Weyl algebra. These are analyzed in terms of skew polynomial rings and noncommutative Groebner bases.

Abstract:We study a canonical basis for spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of weights 12, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 26 on the full modular group. We prove a relation between the Fourier coefficients of modular forms in this canonical basis and a generalized Ramanujan tau-function, and use this to prove that these Fourier coefficients are often highly divisible by 2.

Hecke operators on topological modular forms

Abstract:The cohomology theory TMF of topological modular forms is a derived algebro-geometric interpretation of the classical ring of complex modular forms from number theory. In this article, we refine the classical Adams operations, Hecke operators, and Atkin--Lehner involutions from endomorphisms of classical modular forms to stable operators on TMF. Our algebro-geometric formulation of these operators leads to simple proofs of their many remarkable properties and computations. From these properties, we use techniques from homotopy theory to make simple number-theoretic deductions, including a rederivation of some classical congruences of Ramanujan and providing new infinite families of classical Hecke operators which satisfy Maeda's conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the modular differential equation $ y'' + F(z)y = 0$ on the upper half-plane $\mathbb{H}$, where $F$ is a weight 4 modular form for $\Gamma_0(2)$. Our method involves solving the associated Schwarzian equation $\displaystyle \{h, z\} = 2F(z)$, where $\{h, z\}$ denotes the Schwarzian derivative of a meromorphic function $h$ on $\mathbb{H}$. We will establish the conditions under which the solutions to this equation are modular functions for subgroups of the modular group, and we provide explicit expressions for these solutions in terms of classical modular functions. The primary tools in our analysis are the theory of equivariant functions on the upper half-plane and the representation theory of level 2 subgroups of the modular group.

Modular Differential Equations with Movable Poles and Admissible RCFT Characters

Abstract:Studies of modular linear differential equations (MLDE) for the classification of rational CFT characters have been limited to the case where the coefficient functions (in monic form) have no poles, or poles at special points of moduli space. Here we initiate an exploration of the vast territory of MLDEs with two characters and any number of poles at arbitrary points of moduli space. We show how to parametrise the most general equation precisely and count its parameters. Eliminating logarithmic singularities at all the poles provides constraint equations for the accessory parameters. By taking suitable limits, we find recursion relations between solutions for different numbers of poles. The cases of one and two movable poles are examined in detail and compared with predictions based on quasi-characters to find complete agreement. We also comment on the limit of coincident poles. Finally we show that there exist genuine CFT corresponding to many of the newly-studied cases. We emphasise that the modular data is an output, rather than an input, of our approach.

The automorphisms of differential extensions of characteristic $p$

Abstract:Nonassociative differential extensions are generalizations of associative differential extensions, either of a purely inseparable field extension $K$ of exponent one of a field $F$, $F$ of characteristic $p$, or of a central division algebra over a purely inseparable field extension of $F$. Associative differential extensions are well known central simple algebras first defined by Amitsur and Jacobson. We explicitly compute the automorphisms of nonassociative differential extensions. These are canonically obtained by restricting automorphisms of the differential polynomial ring used in the construction of the algebra. In particular, we obtain descriptions for the automorphisms of associative differential extensions of $D$ and $K$, which are known to be inner.

Abstract:Our aim is to introduce and advocate non-$\Sigma$ (non-symmetric) modular operads. While ordinary modular operads were inspired by the structure of the moduli space of stable complex curves, non-$\Sigma$ modular operads model surfaces with open strings outputs. An immediate application of our theory is a short proof that the modular envelope of the associative operad is the linearization of the terminal operad in the category of non-$\Sigma$ modular operads. This gives a succinct description of this object that plays an important role in open string field theory. We also sketch further perspectives of the presented approach.
