Abstract:We derive new formulae for the determinant of the walk matrix of a graph. We use these to construct families of controllable graphs that are determined by their generalized spectrum. The results here contribute to important recent result work on controllable graphs.

Abstract:Let $G$ be an $n$-vertex graph and $Q(G)$ be its signless Laplacian matrix. The $Q$-walk matrix of $G$, denoted by $W_Q(G)$, is $[e,Q(G)e,\ldots,Q^{n-1}(G)e]$, where $e$ is the all-one vector. Let $G\circ P_m$ be the graph obtained from $G$ and $n$ copies of the path $P_m$ by identifying the $i$-th vertex of $G$ with an endvertex of the $i$-th copy of $P_m$ for each $i$. We prove that, $$\det W_Q(G\circ P_m)=\pm (\det Q(G))^{m-1}(\det W_Q(G))^m$$ holds for any $m\ge 2$. This gives a signless Laplacian counterpart of the following recently established identity [17]: $$\det W_A(G\circ P_m)=\pm (\det A(G))^{\lfloor\frac{m}{2}\rfloor}(\det W_A(G))^m,$$ where $A(G)$ is the adjacency matrix of $G$ and $W_A(G)=[e,A(G)e,\ldots,A^{n-1}(G)e]$. We also propose a conjecture to unify the above two equalities.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 397-418, March 2024. We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Based on these generating functions, we define and study corresponding centrality measures. Illustrative computational results are also provided.

Abstract:We give a new determinant expression for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a quantum graph G. Also, we give a decomposition formula for the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G. Furthermore, we define an L-function of G, and give a determinant expression of it. As a corollary, we express the characteristic polynomial of the bond scattering matrix of a regular covering of G by means of its L-functions. As an application, we introduce three types of quantum graph walks, and treat their relation.

Abstract:For a graph G, the spectral radius \r{ho}(G) of G is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. In this paper, we seek the relationship between \r{ho}(G) and the walks of the subgraphs of G. Especially, if G contains a complete multi-partite graph as a spanning subgraph, we give a formula for \r{ho}(G) by using an infinite series on walks of the subgraphs of G. These results are useful for the current popular spectral extremal problem.

Graph Labelings Obtainable by Random Walks

Abstract:We initiate the study of what we refer to as random walk labelings of graphs. These are graph labelings that are obtainable by performing a random walk on the graph, such that the labeling occurs increasingly whenever an unlabeled vertex is encountered. Some of the results we obtain involve sums of inverses of binomial coefficients, for which we obtain new identities. In particular, we prove that $\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}2^{k}(2k+1)^{-1}\binom{2k}{k}^{-1}\binom{n+k}{k}=\binom{2n}{n}2^{-n}\sum_{k=0}^{n-1}2^{k}(2k+1)^{-1}\binom{2k}{k}^{-1}$, thus confirming a conjecture of Bala.

Abstract:We propose a quantum walk defined by digraphs (mixed graphs). This is like Grover walk that is perturbed by a certain complex-valued function defined by digraphs. The discriminant of this quantum walk is a matrix that is a certain normalization of generalized Hermitian adjacency matrices. Furthermore, we give definitions of the positive and negative supports of the transfer matrix, and clarify explicit formulas of their supports of the square. In addition, we give tables by computer on the identification of digraphs by their eigenvalues.

Abstract:Lock step walker model is a one-dimensional integer lattice walker model in discrete time. Suppose that initially there are infinitely many walkers on the non-negative even integer sites. At each tick of time, each walker moves either to its left or to its right with equal probability. The only constraint is that no two walkers can occupy the same site at the same time. It is proved that in the large time limit, a certain conditional probability of the displacement of the leftmost walker is identical to the limiting distribution of the properly scaled largest eigenvalue of a random GOE matrix (GOE Tracy-Widom distribution). The proof is based on the bijection between path configurations and semistandard Young tableaux established recently by Guttmann, Owczarek and Viennot. Statistics of semistandard Young tableaux is analyzed using the Hankel determinant expression for the probability from the work of Rains and the author. The asymptotics of the Hankel determinant is obtained by applying the Deift-Zhou steepest-descent method to the Riemann-Hilbert problem for the related orthogonal polynomials.

Abstract:We study continuous-time open quantum walks in one dimension through a matrix representation, focusing on nearest-neighbor transitions for which an associated weight matrix exists. Statistics such as site recurrence are studied in terms of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials and explicit calculations are obtained for classes of Lindblad generators that model quantum versions of birth-death processes. Emphasis is given to the technical distinction between the cases of a finite or infinite number of vertices. Recent results for open quantum walks are adapted in order to apply the folding trick to continuous-time birth-death chains on the integers. Finally, we investigate the matrix-valued Stieltjes transform associated to the weights.

Combinatorics of nondeterministic walks

Abstract:This paper introduces nondeterministic walks, a new variant of one-dimensional discrete walks. The main difference to classical walks is that its nondeterministic steps consist of sets of steps from a predefined set such that all possible extensions are explored in parallel. We discuss in detail the most natural nondeterministic step sets (Dyck and Motzkin step sets), and show that several nondeterministic classes of lattice paths, such as nondeterministic bridges, excursions, and meanders are algebraic. The key concept is the generalization of the ending point of a walk to its reachable points, i.e., a set of ending points. We extend our results to general step sets: We show that nondeterministic bridges and several subclasses of nondeterministic meanders are always algebraic. We conjecture the same is true for nondeterministic excursions, and we present python and Maple packages to support our conjecture. This research is motivated by the study of networks involving encapsulation and decapsulation of protocols. Our results are obtained using generating functions, analytic combinatorics, and additive combinatorics. Keywords. Bijections Between Łukasiewicz Walks and Generalized Tandem Walks

Abstract:In this article, we study the enumeration by length of several walk models on the square lattice. We obtain bijections between walks in the upper half-plane returning to the $x$-axis and walks in the quarter plane. A recent work by Bostan, Chyzak, and Mahboubi has given a bijection for models using small north, west, and south-east steps. We adapt and generalize it to a bijection between half-plane walks using those three steps in two colours and a quarter-plane model over the symmetrized step set consisting of north, north-west, west, south, south-east, and east. We then generalize our bijections to certain models with large steps: for given $p\geq1$, a bijection is given between the half-plane and quarter-plane models obtained by keeping the small south-east step and replacing the two steps north and west of length 1 by the $p+1$ steps of length $p$ in directions between north and west. This model is close to, but distinct from, the model of generalized tandem walks studied by Bousquet-Mélou, Fusy, and Raschel.

Generalized spectral characterizations of almost controllable graphs

Abstract:Characterizing graphs by their spectra is an important topic in spectral graph theory, which has attracted a lot of attention of researchers in recent years. It is generally very hard and challenging to show a given graph to be determined by its spectrum. In Wang~[J. Combin. Theory, Ser. B, 122 (2017):438-451], the author gave a simple arithmetic condition for a family of graphs being determined by their generalized spectra. However, the method applies only to a family of the so called \emph{controllable graphs}; it fails when the graphs are non-controllable. In this paper, we introduce a class of non-controllable graphs, called \emph{almost controllable graphs}, and prove that, for any pair of almost controllable graphs $G$ and $H$ that are generalized cospectral, there exist exactly two rational orthogonal matrices $Q$ with constant row sums such that $Q^{\rm T}A(G)Q=A(H)$, where $A(G)$ and $A(H)$ are the adjacency matrices of $G$ and $H$, respectively. The main ingredient of the proof is a use of the Binet-Cauchy formula. As an application, we obtain a simple criterion for an almost controllable graph $G$ to be determined by its generalized spectrum, which in some sense extends the corresponding result for controllable graphs.

We investigate the concept of effective resistance in connection graphs, expanding its traditional application from undirected graphs. We propose a robust definition of effective resistance in connection graphs by focusing on the duality of Dirichlet-type and Poisson-type problems on connection graphs. Additionally, we delve into random walks, taking into account both node transitions and vector rotations. This approach introduces novel concepts of effective conductance and resistance matrices for connection graphs, capturing mean rotation matrices corresponding to random walk transitions. Thereby, it provides new theoretical insights for network analysis and optimization.

Abstract:The walk matrix associated to an $n\times n$ integer matrix $X$ and an integer vector $b$ is defined by $W := (b,X b, . . . ,X^{n-1} b)$. We study limiting laws for the cokernel of $W$ in the scenario where $X$ is a random matrix with independent entries and $b$ is deterministic. Our first main result provides a formula for the distribution of the $p^{m}$-torsion part of the cokernel, as a group, when $X$ has independent entries from a specific distribution. The second main result relaxes the distributional assumption and concerns the $\mathbb{Z}[x]$-module structure.

Abstract:Bordered and framed Toeplitz/Hankel determinants have the same structure as Toeplitz/Hankel determinants except in small number of matrix rows and/or columns. We review these structured determinants and their connections to orthogonal polynomials, collecting well-known and perhaps less well-known results. We present some applications for these structured determinants to ensembles of non-intersecting paths and the six-vertex model, with an eye towards asymptotic analysis. We also prove some asymptotic formulae for the probability of non-intersection for an ensemble of continuous time random walks for certain choices of starting and ending points as the number of random walkers tends to infinity.
