Abstract:For a graph G, the spectral radius \r{ho}(G) of G is the largest eigenvalue of its adjacency matrix. In this paper, we seek the relationship between \r{ho}(G) and the walks of the subgraphs of G. Especially, if G contains a complete multi-partite graph as a spanning subgraph, we give a formula for \r{ho}(G) by using an infinite series on walks of the subgraphs of G. These results are useful for the current popular spectral extremal problem.

Abstract:We derive new formulae for the determinant of the walk matrix of a graph. We use these to construct families of controllable graphs that are determined by their generalized spectrum. The results here contribute to important recent result work on controllable graphs.

Abstract:This paper introduces nondeterministic walks, a new variant of one-dimensional discrete walks. The main difference to classical walks is that its nondeterministic steps consist of sets of steps from a predefined set such that all possible extensions are explored in parallel. We discuss in detail the most natural nondeterministic step sets (Dyck and Motzkin step sets), and show that several nondeterministic classes of lattice paths, such as nondeterministic bridges, excursions, and meanders are algebraic. The key concept is the generalization of the ending point of a walk to its reachable points, i.e., a set of ending points. We extend our results to general step sets: We show that nondeterministic bridges and several subclasses of nondeterministic meanders are always algebraic. We conjecture the same is true for nondeterministic excursions, and we present python and Maple packages to support our conjecture. This research is motivated by the study of networks involving encapsulation and decapsulation of protocols. Our results are obtained using generating functions, analytic combinatorics, and additive combinatorics. Keywords. Twisted Recurrence via Polynomial Walks

Abstract:In this paper we show how polynomial walks can be used to establish a twisted recurrence for sets of positive density in $\mathbb{Z}^d$. In particular, we prove that if $\Gamma \leq \operatorname{GL}_d(\mathbb{Z})$ is finitely generated by unipotents and acts irreducibly on $\mathbb{R}^d$, then for any set $B \subset \mathbb{Z}^d$ of positive density, there exists $k \geq 1$ such that for any $v \in k \mathbb{Z}^d$ one can find $\gamma \in \Gamma$ with $\gamma v \in B - B$. Our method does not require the linearity of the action, and we prove a twisted recurrence for semigroups of maps from $\mathbb{Z}^d$ to $\mathbb{Z}^d$ satisfying some irreducibility and polynomial assumptions. As one of the consequences, we prove a non-linear analog of Bogolubov's theorem -- for any set $B \subset \mathbb{Z}^2$ of positive density, and $p(n) \in \mathbb{Z}[n]$, with $p(0) = 0$ and $\operatorname{deg}(p) \geq 2$, there exists $k \geq 1$ such that $k \mathbb{Z} \subset \{ x - p(y) \, | \, (x,y) \in B-B \}$. Unlike the previous works on twisted recurrence that used recent results of Benoist-Quint and Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes on equidistribution of random walks on automorphism groups of tori, our method relies on the classical Weyl equidistribution for polynomial orbits on tori.

Abstract:We study continuous-time open quantum walks in one dimension through a matrix representation, focusing on nearest-neighbor transitions for which an associated weight matrix exists. Statistics such as site recurrence are studied in terms of matrix-valued orthogonal polynomials and explicit calculations are obtained for classes of Lindblad generators that model quantum versions of birth-death processes. Emphasis is given to the technical distinction between the cases of a finite or infinite number of vertices. Recent results for open quantum walks are adapted in order to apply the folding trick to continuous-time birth-death chains on the integers. Finally, we investigate the matrix-valued Stieltjes transform associated to the weights.

On a Hierarchy of Spectral Invariants for Graphs

Abstract:We consider a hierarchy of graph invariants that naturally extends the spectral invariants defined by Fürer (Lin. Alg. Appl. 2010) based on the angles formed by the set of standard basis vectors and their projections onto eigenspaces of the adjacency matrix. We provide a purely combinatorial characterization of this hierarchy in terms of the walk counts. This allows us to give a complete answer to Fürer's question about the strength of his invariants in distinguishing non-isomorphic graphs in comparison to the 2-dimensional Weisfeiler-Leman algorithm, extending the recent work of Rattan and Seppelt (SODA 2023). As another application of the characterization, we prove that almost all graphs are determined up to isomorphism in terms of the spectrum and the angles, which is of interest in view of the long-standing open problem whether almost all graphs are determined by their eigenvalues alone. Finally, we describe the exact relationship between the hierarchy and the Weisfeiler-Leman algorithms for small dimensions, as also some other important spectral characteristics of a graph such as the generalized and the main spectra.

Combinatorial necessary conditions for regular graphs to induce periodic quantum walks

Abstract:We derive combinatorial necessary conditions for discrete-time quantum walks defined by regular mixed graphs to be periodic. If the quantum walk is periodic, all the eigenvalues of the time evolution matrices must be algebraic integers. Focusing on this, we explore which ring the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials should belong to. On the other hand, the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of $\eta$-Hermitian adjacency matrices have combinatorial implications. From these, we can find combinatorial implications in the coefficients of the characteristic polynomials of the time evolution matrices, and thus derive combinatorial necessary conditions for mixed graphs to be periodic. For example, if a $k$-regular mixed graph with $n$ vertices is periodic, then $2n/k$ must be an integer. As an application of this work, we determine periodicity of mixed complete graphs and mixed graphs with a prime number of vertices.

Abstract:SIAM Journal on Matrix Analysis and Applications, Volume 45, Issue 1, Page 397-418, March 2024. We extend the notion of nonbacktracking walks from unweighted graphs to graphs whose edges have a nonnegative weight. Here the weight associated with a walk is taken to be the product over the weights along the individual edges. We give two ways to compute the associated generating function, and corresponding node centrality measures. One method works directly on the original graph and one uses a line graph construction followed by a projection. The first method is more efficient, but the second has the advantage of extending naturally to time-evolving graphs. Based on these generating functions, we define and study corresponding centrality measures. Illustrative computational results are also provided.

Bijections Between Łukasiewicz Walks and Generalized Tandem Walks

Abstract:In this article, we study the enumeration by length of several walk models on the square lattice. We obtain bijections between walks in the upper half-plane returning to the $x$-axis and walks in the quarter plane. A recent work by Bostan, Chyzak, and Mahboubi has given a bijection for models using small north, west, and south-east steps. We adapt and generalize it to a bijection between half-plane walks using those three steps in two colours and a quarter-plane model over the symmetrized step set consisting of north, north-west, west, south, south-east, and east. We then generalize our bijections to certain models with large steps: for given $p\geq1$, a bijection is given between the half-plane and quarter-plane models obtained by keeping the small south-east step and replacing the two steps north and west of length 1 by the $p+1$ steps of length $p$ in directions between north and west. This model is close to, but distinct from, the model of generalized tandem walks studied by Bousquet-Mélou, Fusy, and Raschel.

Gathering Information about a Graph by Counting Walks from a Single Vertex

Abstract:We say that a vertex $v$ in a connected graph $G$ is decisive if the numbers of walks from $v$ of each length determine the graph $G$ rooted at $v$ up to isomorphism among all connected rooted graphs with the same number of vertices. On the other hand, $v$ is called ambivalent if it has the same walk counts as a vertex in a non-isomorphic connected graph with the same number of vertices as $G$. Using the classical constructions of cospectral trees, we first observe that ambivalent vertices exist in almost all trees. If a graph $G$ is determined by spectrum and its characteristic polynomial is irreducible, then we prove that all vertices of $G$ are decisive. Note that both assumptions are conjectured to be true for almost all graphs. Without using any assumption, we are able to prove that the vertices of a random graph are with high probability distinguishable from each other by the numbers of closed walks of length at most 4. As a consequence, the closed walk counts for lengths 2, 3, and 4 provide a canonical labeling of a random graph. Answering a question posed in chemical graph theory, we finally show that all walk counts for a vertex in an $n$-vertex graph are determined by the counts for the $2n$ shortest lengths, and the bound $2n$ is here asymptotically tight.

Abstract:In this paper, for any integer $k\geq 2$, we study the distribution of the visible lattice points in certain generalized Pólya's walk on $\mathbb{Z}^k$: perturbed Pólya's walk and twisted Pólya's walk. For the first case, we prove that the density of visible lattice points in a perturbed Pólya's walk is almost surely $1/\zeta(k)$, where $\zeta(s)$ denotes the Riemann zeta function. A trivial case of our result covers the standard Pólya's walk. Moreover, we do numerical experiments for the second case, we conjecture that the density is also almost surely $1/\zeta(k)$.

Abstract:In this paper we study a class of discrete quantum walks, known as bipartite walks. A discrete quantum walk is given by the powers of a unitary matrix U indexed by arcs or edges of the underlying graph. The walk is periodic if Uk = I for some positive integer k. We extend results from earlier work on periodicity—if a biregular graph G has eigenvalues whose squares are algebraic integers with degree at most two, we characterize periodicity of the bipartite walk over G in terms of its spectrum. We apply periodicity results of bipartite walks to get a characterization of periodicity of Grover's walk on regular graphs.

Abstract:We resolve a conjecture of Albert and Bousquet-Mélou enumerating quarter-planar walks with fixed horizontal and vertical projections according to their upper-right-corner count modulo 2. In doing this, we introduce a signed upper-right-corner count statistic. We find its distribution over planar walks with any choice of fixed horizontal and vertical projections. Additionally, we prove that the polynomial counting loops with a fixed horizontal and vertical projection according to the absolute value of their signed upper-right-corner count is (x+1)-positive. Finally, we conjecture an equivalence between (x+1)-positivity of the generating function for upper-right-corner count and signed upper-right-corner count, leading to a reformulation of a conjecture of Albert and Bousquet-Mélou on which their asymptotic analysis of permutations is sortable by two stacks in parallel relies.

Abstract:This article deals with the enumeration of directed lattice walks on the integers with any finite set of steps, starting at a given altitude $j$ and ending at a given altitude $k$, with additional constraints such as, for example, to never attain altitude $0$ in-between. We first discuss the case of walks on the integers with steps $-h, \dots, -1, +1, \dots, +h$. The case $h=1$ is equivalent to the classical Dyck paths, for which many ways of getting explicit formulas involving Catalan-like numbers are known. The case $h=2$ corresponds to "basketball" walks, which we treat in full detail. Then we move on to the more general case of walks with any finite set of steps, also allowing some weights/probabilities associated with each step. We show how a method of wide applicability, the so-called "kernel method", leads to explicit formulas for the number of walks of length $n$, for any $h$, in terms of nested sums of binomials. We finally relate some special cases to other combinatorial problems, or to problems arising in queuing theory.
