Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) can be widely converted into value-added chemicals and fuels production. Herein, we reported a sustainable and efficient approach for synthesizing HMF directly from cellulose. Facile formylation of cellulose with green and recyclable formic acid was developed for cellulose formate (CF) production. CF with special net-like structure and high degree of formyl substitution was prepared. The resultant CF exhibited excellent catalytic conversion and selectivity for HMF production comparable to monomeric glucose as reactant in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. In our work, we presented molecular dynamics simulations to elaborate the preferential coordination of DMSO around formyl group, which promoted the solvation of formylated substrate in DMSO-H2O mixture, and the HMF yielded could be protected by DMSO without further degradation to levulinic acid or humins.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a crucial biobased compound for synthesizing chemicals and biofuels, but the direct conversion of glucose to HMF suffers low yield and purification problems. In this paper, a cheap and efficient deep eutectic solvent (DES) of choline chloride-chromium chloride (ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O) was developed to convert glucose and other carbohydrates to HMF. High HMF yields of 70.2, 78.6, 72.6, and 71.7% were achieved from glucose, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, and sucrose, respectively. The DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O could be reused nine times without a significant loss of catalytic activity. In addition, a method was developed to regenerate humins-polluted DES. Combined with ultraviolet and visible spectrum data and density functional theory calculation, [Cr(H2O)(2)Cl(3)Ch](+) was identified as the active species in DES ChCl-CrCl(3)middot6H(2)O. This paper proposed a new effective system to convert carbohydrates to HMF. The discovery of active species provides a base for future studies on dehydration mechanisms.

Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) is a high-valuebiomass-derived platform chemical derived from renewablebiomass, which is a great alternative to petroleum-based chemicals;however, it cannot be produced on a large scale at present becauseof the limitation of a low HMF yield and costly production. In thiswork, an experimental study of one-pot production of HMF fromglucose in an acetone-water solvent was conducted. The effects ofinorganic salts (in specific, NaCl) on miscible solvents were studiedbecause inorganic salts could affect the phase structure of solvents.We also study the influence of the ratio between Lewis acid andBronsted acid (L/B) on the dehydration reaction. After parameteroptimization experiments, up to 64.5% HMF yield was obtained at the condition ofC0= 1.25 w/v %,CAlCl3= 1.25 w/v %,CHCl=10mmolmiddotL-1,T= 160 degrees C, ando/a= 80/20, and the optimized L/B was 1.25 kgmiddotmol-1. Finally, an economic and efficient HMFproduction process including HMF purification and catalyst recycling was proposed; the HMF product could be produced andseparated with high recovery (similar to 88%) and purity (similar to 85%) in the process. Ourfindings and analysis would provide support for thechoice of the reaction system and bifunctional catalyst synthesis in the subsequent industrial demonstration development

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) production from cellulose is a hot topic, while the rigidity of cellulose limits its efficient conversion into HMF. Cellulose formate has exhibited the great potential for HMF production but it's synthesis via direct formylation of cellulose in formic acid is difficult. Herein, we reported a green synthetic route of cellulose formate and its efficient conversion into HMF. Ball milled cellulose formate (BCF) was synthesized via ball milling followed by formylation in formic acid at 80 degrees C for 0.5 h. The structure of BCF was thoroughly characterized and BCF was subsequently converted to HMF catalyzed by AlCl3 and HCl in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)-H2O media. Results showed that ball milling of cellulose for 1-1.5 h efficiently deconstructed its crystallinity and degree of polymerization, boosting its further formylation and catalytic conversion. An overall 66.9% HMF yield from cellulose was achieved at 150 degrees C for 20 min using BCF derived from cellulose ball milled for 1.5 h as the substrate. BCF exhibits high reactivity toward HMF due to its excellent solubility and accessibility in DMSO-H2O media, and the release of formic acid in reaction further facilitates HMF production. BCF synthesized with different ball milling times shows different degrees of substitution of formyl groups, which could serve as an indicator and regulate the HMF production. The green synthesis of cellulose formate creates an efficient pathway for HMF production.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) primary can be synthesized from monosaccharides including glucose and fructose, cost is one of barriers to realize HMF large-scale production. In this study, a high HMF yield of 69.6 mol% was obtained at 180. for 5 min using biomass derived cellulose formate as reactant, which was prepared by formylation of cellulose using recyclable formic acid, and sequentially catalyzed by hydrochloric acid (HCl) and aluminum chloride (AlCl3) in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) and H2O system. To investigate the effect of cosolvents and formyl groups on the cellulose formate conversion, kinetics analysis and molecular dynamics simulations were conducted. Reaction kinetics study shows that the rate constant of hydrolysis of cellulose formate to glucose increased by almost three times in DMSO-H2O and the reaction rates' constants of glucose, fructose and HMF to humins decreased with the presence of DMSO. Molecular dynamics simulations show that formyl group and DMSO increased its hydrophilicity around the reactive hydroxyl group on the carbon ring and steric hindrance of formyl group affect the distribution of water molecular and DMSO molecular around formylated glucose, resulting in facilitating the formation of a precursor to fructose and inhibiting the formation of humins during formylated glucose conversion. Abstract:With the dwindling availability of fossil fuel resources and the dramatic increase in demand, 5-methoxymethylfurfural (MMF) obtained from renewable biomass resources has great potential as a fossil fuel alternative. In this work, a high yield (80.5%) of MMF was obtained from fructose catalyzed by Amberlyst-15 with the assistance of dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in methanol at 100 degrees C for 10 h. Based on a detailed investigation of the reaction mechanism through the effects of DMSO, Amberlyst-15, reaction time, and reaction temperature on MMF yield and the existence of intermediates proved by FTIR, a two-step pathway was proposed: (1) DMSO and H ion on Amberlyst-15 act as a joint-catalyst [DMSOH](+), facilitating the dehydration of fructose into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), and (2) [DMSOH](+) assists the etherification of HMF with methanol into MMF, which is the rate-determining step. This finding expands the concept of biomass conversion into biomass fuels and plays a vital role in catalyst screen and design, reaction medium selection, and industrial applications.

Abstract:As a crucial bio-based platform chemical, the production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) from the abundant substrate cellulose has garnered significant attention. However, tedious reaction steps are inevitable because of the complex tandem conversions of dissolution, hydrolysis, and dehydration. Furthermore, due to the ultralow solubility of cellulose, harsh reaction conditions are inevitable, which can exacerbate HMF degradation. To this end, we investigated the structural changes in microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) after its dissolution and regeneration in various dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/deep eutectic solvents (DESs) to clarify the mechanisms underlying its dissolution. The results revealed that the highly crystalline cellulose I in MCC was converted into amorphous cellulose II after treatment with DMSO/tetraethylammonium chloride (TEAC), which led to the complete dissolution of MCC. Accordingly, a dissolution-catalysis coupling reaction strategy was proposed for converting MCC to HMF via a one-pot method in DMSO/TEAC, simultaneously reducing the number of steps necessary for the reaction and achieving mild reaction conditions. In addition, the pathway for the one-pot reaction was clarified by analyzing the intermediate yields. The combination of AlCl3 as a catalyst and DMSO/ TEAC resulted in a notable MCC conversion of 93.3 wt% and a high HMF yield of 53.1%. Remarkably, the reaction conditions employed in this study (130 degrees C, 1 h) were milder in terms of shorter reaction times and lower temperatures than those reported in most current literature. This was attributed to the complete dissolution of MCC resulting from decrystallization. Therefore, the proposed reaction strategy enabled the efficient production of HMF from cellulose.

Abstract:Chitin biomass, a rich renewable resource, is the second most abundant natural polysaccharide after cellulose. Conversion of chitin biomass to high value-added chemicals can play a significant role in alleviating the global energy crisis and environmental pollution. In this review, the recent achievements in converting chitin biomass to high-value chemicals, such as 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF), under different conditions using chitin, chitosan, glucosamine, and N-acetylglucosamine as raw materials are summarized. Related research on pretreatment technology of chitin biomass is also discussed. New approaches for transformation of chitin biomass to HMF are also proposed. This review promotes the development of industrial technologies for degradation of chitin biomass and preparation of HMF. It also provides insight into a sustainable future in terms of renewable resources.

Abstract:Catalytic conversion of lignocellulosic biomass into furfural (FF) and 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) requires a high reaction temperature (150–230 °C) in aqueous/organic systems. In this study, a novel choline chloride–formic acid-SnCl4·5H2O (ChCl–Fa–SnCl4) catalytic system was designed to transform herbal residues (HRs) carbohydrates into furanic derivatives at temperatures below 140 °C. The total yield of FF and xylose from HR of Heteropogon contortus (L.) Beauv (HRH) was 67.5% at 140 °C for 10 min, while the total yield of 5-HMF and glucose from HR of Anemarrhena asphodeloides Bunge was 93.8% at 120 °C. Characteristics of substrates such as molecular weight had a great influence on formation of furanic derivatives and sugar release. Surprisingly, the dissolution and recrystallisation characteristics of ChCl make this catalytic system sustainable and economically attractive. Recovery of ChCl and SnCl4 was 73.3% following simple natural recrystallisation, and recovered material retained a high chemical reactivity for FF and 5-HMF production. Moreover, 100% lignin dissolution was achieved in this system at 140 °C, and ~ 77% could be precipitated and recovered by adding water.

Abstract:5-hydroxymethyfurfural is an important platform chemical, which can be produced by hydrothermal conversion of chitin biomass. 5-Hydroxymethyfurfural can be converted into value-added chemicals and liquid fuels. Thus, the utilization of chitin biomass will help consume crustacean waste and reduce environmental problems caused by the overuse of fossil resources. This review summarizes the recent process in the production of 5-hydroxymethyfurfural from chitin biomass in solvent-catalytic systems. The topics mainly include solvent systems, catalysts, and conversion mechanisms. Suitable solvent system can improve the conversion of chitin biomass into 5-hydroxymethyfurfural. Especially, the strong solubility of concentrated salt solution resulted in mild reaction temperature. Mechanism studies based on solvent system will be helpful to the products control. The catalysts are very important in producing 5-hydroxymethyfurfural from chitin biomass. Catalyst design and related reaction mechanism research will be necessary to improve the selectivity of the 5-hydroxymethyfurfural. Abstract:5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) is one of the top valuableplatformchemicals that can be derived from biomass. Herein, a facile, mild,and efficient catalytic conversion method was developed to convertchitin biomass into 5-HMF in lithium bromide molten salt hydrates(LiBr MSHs) with boric acid (BA) as the catalyst. About 49.6% 5-HMFyield was obtained from glucosamine (GlcN) in 65 wt % LiBr MSHs at130 & DEG;C for 2 h with 800% BA addition. The system is applicableto other sugars, and the C2-substituted group of sugars played a significantrole in the 5-HMF yield. The 5-HMF yields were 81.3, 40.3, and 3.9%from fructose, glucose, and N-acetyl glucosamine(GlcNAc), respectively, under identical conditions. Combined withacid addition and Box-Behnken experiment designs, the directconversion of chitosan and chitin were achieved at 140 & DEG;C for5 h to produce 5-HMF with 21.6 and 15.3% yield. Ammonia quantitativeanalysis and NMR tests have been conducted, based on which a plausiblereaction pathway was proposed. The LiBr MSHs and the BA catalyst facilitatedthe hydrolysis, deacetylation, and ring-opening of chitin biomass.Especially, the catalyst BA played a key role in the formation of5-HMF, as it was found to promote dehydration at the last step. Thestudy put forward new avenues for chitin refinery to produce high-valuefuranic platform chemicals in cheap and green solvent systems.

Abstract:The primary challenges associated with converting chitin biomass into 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) primarily revolve around achieving high 5-HMF yields while overcoming various limitations from traditional acid-based catalysts, including complex post-treatment procedures, by-product generation, and equipment corrosion. In this view, a novel approach was developed to synthesize 5-HMF from chitosan under hydrothermal process using a mixture of DMSO and water as reaction medium. Biomass-derived organic carboxylic acids were used as catalysts due to their weaker corrosiveness compared to mineral acids. The acidity of the bio-based acid was adjusted using inexpensive ionic liquids. By combining 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([BMIM]Cl) with oxalic acid (OA), an excellent 29.1 % yield of 5-HMF conversion was achieved on the optimized condition. The improved dissociation ability of OA by [BMIM]Cl played a crucial role in this outcome. Using FTIR and density functional theory (DFT) techniques allowed for the proposal of a dissociation mechanism for OA induced by [BMIM]Cl, involving hydrogen bond interactions and the weakening of the O–H bond, facilitating the easy dissociation of hydrogen in the O–H group with H + formation. Furthermore, the untreated chitosan and the solid residues obtained during the conversion process were characterized revealing the gradual conversion and the quaternization in the NH 2 group of chitosan.

Efficient Preparation of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural from Cellulose Via One-Step Combination of Mechanical and Chemical Pre-Treatment

Abstract:In this study, an innovative method for the high-efficiency production of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF) from cellulose were developed, overcoming the inherent recalcitrant physicochemical properties of cellulose. The method initiated with the ultra-high-pressure homogenization (UHPH) of a cellulose and formic acid mixture. This pre-treatment could highly enhance the 5-HMF yield compared with the reported pretreatment method. Following this, a catalytic system comprising a metal-based ionic liquid, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazole chloroaluminate ([BMIM][AlCl4]) and acetic acid, was utilized to transform the pre-treated cellulose into 5-HMF. Reaction parameters such as temperature, duration, DMSO concentration, cellulose substrate amount, and the balance of ILs and organic acids were optimized to obtain the highest yield of 5-HMF. Besides, a combination of experimental characterization methods with quantum chemical calculations, aiming to elucidate the pre-treatment mechanisms was conducted. The integration of formyl groups into the cellulose structure and the intense shear forces applied during UHPH were observed. These factors contributed to disrupting the cellulose’s chemical stability, reducing particle size, and shifting cellulose’s structure towards a blend of crystalline cellulose and amorphous forms with decreasing crystallinity. These changes collectively heightened the reactivity of cellulose for subsequent catalytic transformations, fostering more effective interactions between the catalyst and substrate and thereby elevating the efficiency of cellulose conversion to 5-HMF.

Abstract:5-Halomethylfurfurals can be considered as platform chemicals of high reactivity making them useful for the preparation of a variety of important compounds. In this study, a one-pot route for the conversion of carbohydrates into 5-chloromethylfurfural (CMF) in a simple and efficient (HCl-H3PO4/CHCl3) biphasic system has been investigated. Monosaccharides such as D-fructose, D-glucose and sorbose, disaccharides such as sucrose and cellobiose and polysaccharides such as cellulose were successfully converted into CMF in satisfactory yields under mild conditions. Our data shows that when using D-fructose the optimum yield of CMF was about 47%. This understanding allowed us to extent our work to biomaterials, such as wood powder and wood pulps with yields of CMF obtained being comparable to those seen with some of the enumerated mono and disaccharides. Overall, the proposed (HCl-H3PO4/CHCl3) optimized biphasic system provides a simple, mild, and cost-effective means to prepare CMF from renewable resources.

Abstract:5-[(Formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), an analogue of 5-(hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is becoming more attractive due to its superior stability and hydrophobicity, which make it easier to refineand store. In the present study, FMF was produced from fructose by one-pot approach in pure formic acid media or by a two-step approach via HMF in choline chloride (ChCl)/fructose deep eutectic solvents (DES) system. A favorable FMF yield of 63.22% was reached by two-step approach. In addition, the effects of reaction parameters, such as temperature and acidity, on preparation of FMF from fructose were systematically investigated. The dehydration of fructose into HMF was confirmed as the rate-controlling step in the consecutive reaction. Ultimately, the separation and purification procedures of FMF were put forward. The FMF with a purity of 98.8% was obtained finally. Meanwhile, the FMF purified by saturated sodium bicarbonate solution showed an excelled storage stability.

Abstract:The catalytic conversion of biomass into high-value chemicals, such as furan derivatives, from 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) holds significant importance. In this study, a bifunctional catalyst prepared from phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) and chitosan was developed for the one-pot synthesis of 2,5-diformylfuran (DFF) from fructose. This approach offered the advantage of bypassing the solvent consumption and cost associated with HMF separation and purification for DFF production. The catalytic activity of the prepared catalyst primarily originated from the loaded PMA. Under optimized reaction conditions, the catalyst achieved a DFF yield of approximately 60% after a 6-h reaction at 150 °C or a 1-h reaction at 170 °C. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited good stability and reusability. These results highlight the potential of the bifunctional catalyst for efficient and cost-effective conversion of fructose into DFF, enabling practical applications in the production of valuable chemicals from bioresources.

Abstract:5-(Hydroxymethyl)furfural (HMF) is an important platform chemical, but the large scale production is limited by its instability. In this research, 5-[(formyloxy)methyl]furfural (FMF), derived from HMF, was produced directly from cellulose in formic acid reaction system with a yield of 33.4mol% at 150°C for 2h. Among numerous metal salt catalysts screened in this study, alkali metal bromides were found to be effective in catalyzing cellulose conversion to FMF. Bromide anions facilitation of the esterification of HMF to form FMF was confirmed. In addition, the effects of water, acid and other reaction parameters also were investigated when NaBr was used as the catalyst. Up to 2% of water or acid in this reaction system did not impact on the FMF yield. Increasing the temperature for every 20°C from 130°C to 170°C halved the reaction time but did not change the maximum yield. FMF was more hydrophobic and thermostable than HMF, which made it easier to be recovered. In a two-step process, FMF with a recovery of 29.4mol% and purity of 97mol% was obtained.

Abstract:Chitin is one of the most abundant biopolymers on Earth but under-utilized. The effective conversion of chitin biomass to useful chemicals is a promising strategy to make full use of chitin. Among chitin-derived compounds, some furan derivatives, typically 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran, have shown great potential as platform compounds in future industries. In this review, different catalytic systems for the synthesis of nitrogen-free 5-hydroxymethylfurfural and nitrogen-containing 3-acetamido-5-acetylfuran from chitin or its derivatives are summarized comparatively. Some efficient technologies for enhancing chitin biomass conversion have been introduced. Last but not least, future challenges are discussed to enable the production of valuable compounds from chitin biomass via greener processes.
