Abstract:To investigate the influence of SO2-4 on the corrosion performance of nanocrystalline (NC) copper bulk, the corrosion tests were performed using electrochemical method, X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEGSEM) technique in the 0.3%、1.3%、2.3%、3.3% and 4.3% Na2SO4 corrosion solutions. The NC copper bulk was prepared by inert gas condensation and in situ warm compress (IGCWC). The results showed that with the increase of sulfate ion concentration, the critical current intensity increased but the potential decreasesd. After adding 1% NaCl into 0.3% Na2SO4 solution, the anodic polarization behavior of NC copper changed significantly. The critical current intensity decreased and the decreasing rate of anodic current intensity lowered notably in the range of activity-passivity zone. These changes were attributed to the CuCl protective film on the NC copper.

Abstract:To investigate the influence of SO42-on the corrosion performance of nanocrystalline (nc) copper bulk,electrochemical methods and XRD,EDS,SEM techniques were used to experimentally study the effects of sulfate ions and temperature on the anodic polarization behavior of nanocrystalline (nc) copper bulk prepared by IGCWC(inert gas condensation and in situ warm compress). The kinetic equations of nc copper in different concentrations and different temperatures of Na2SO4 solutions were deduced. According to the kinetic equations,the dissolution current of nc copper increases with increasing sulfate ion quality score,pH and temperature,which is accordant with the experimental results.
Effects of Major Anions on Iron Release in Drinking Water Supply System

Abstract:Cast-iron is one of the most popular materials used in water distribution system in China. However, the iron release problem it brings up during decades has been a tough question to researchers. Iron release is a process that pipe corrosion scale breaks and release iron ions into bulk water deteriorating water quality and causing colored water problem. Literature shows that some factors such as pH, residual chlorine, DO and velocity of the bulk contribute to iron release. In this study, experiments are conducted to explore the effects of major anions in drinking water such as chloride, sulfate, and nitrate on iron release. The factors are examined separately and synthetically to observe detailed effects as separate factors and as complicated components. Higher concentrations of solutions result in higher iron release while lower concentrations have opposite results in single-factor experiments. Results suggest that the ORP level and conductivity of bulk water both have relations to the iron release.

Abstract:In order to acquire better understanding of steel pipe scale constructions and how water quality factors influence iron release process,pipe scale samples of 10 to 15 year-old pipes were collected and analyzed with SEM,EDS and XRD.Using indoor pipe reactor simulating stagnation environment,experiments were conducted to study effects of chloride,humic acid and dissolved oxygen on iron release process under different concentrations.Results indicate that pipe scale surface is covered with shell-like layer and filled with loose and porous course inside.Major elements are Fe,O and C,and main substances are Fe3O4,FeOOH and FeCO3.Concentrations of chloride and humic acid both have significant positive correlation with iron release quantity.Iron release caused by chloride is mainly precipitant state with a proportion more than 85.02%,and water turbidity acts the same with iron concentration with maximum value of 45.5.Under conditions with humic acid,the proportion of precipitant iron decreases dramatically with an average value of 20.41% and maximum value of 39.39%.Thus water turbidity change is not significant.Under low initial dissolved oxygen condition,total iron and dissolved iron concentration increases 54.9% and 67.7% compared to normal condition.

Abstract:The influence of chloride or sulphur dioxide on the corrosion behavior of copper tube in the air-conditioning system was studied using scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersion spectrometer (EDS) and cyclic polarization techniques. The results showed that the corrosion of copper tube are mainly caused by the SO4 2- and Cl- ions in the circulating water, and the former is mainly responsible for the general corrosion of the copper tube whilst the latter for the pitting corrosion. The different influences of SO4 2- and Cl- ions on the corrosion type of copper tube may be attributed to that the radius of SO4 2- ion is much larger than that of Cl- ion. Meanwhile the results also indicated that SO4 2- inhibits the pitting corrosion caused by Cl- and Cl- inhibits the general corrosion initiated by SO4 2- due to their competitive adsorption on the copper matrix.
Influence of Fulvic Acid on Soluble Copper Release in Soft Water from Copper Pipe/phosphate System

Abstract:The effects of fulvic acid on copper/orthophosphate corrosion inhibition behavior in soft water system were studied. The doses of fulvic acid, pH values of soft water and stagnation times affected the function of phosphate corrosion inhibition for copper pipe. Fulvic acid of high concentration (16mg/L as TOC) enhanced markedly the soluble copper release. The soluble copper release concentration from new copper pipe was higher than that from pipes aging 6 and 10 months. In the presence of fulvic acid, when the pH value was relatively low, the release of soluble copper increased; and the influence of fulvic acid on this release decreased with raising of pH value. In the 96h, stagnation process, the concentration of this release changed increasingly, indicating that the complex compound of fulvic acid and copper ion influenced the interaction of phosphoric acid and copper; thus influenced the corrosion inhibiting effect of phosphate on the copper pipe.

Abstract:Purpose - This paper aims to study the corrosion behaviour of copper alloys HSn70-1 + As and B30 in water with sulphide. Design/methodology/approach - The mass-loss method, electrochemical tests and surface analysis were used to study the corrosion behaviour of copper alloys HSn70-1 + As and B30 in water with sulphide. Findings - Dezincification corrosion occurred on HSn70-1 + As both in water with or without sulphide, and sulphide in water accelerated corrosion, while for the copper alloy B30, the corrosion rates were very small both in water with or without sulphide, although corrosion was also accelerated by sulphide in water. Practical implications - In order to prevent copper alloys HSn70-1 + As and B30 in water with sulphide from corroding, S2- must be removed. Originality/value - It was found that sulphide in water accelerated the corrosion of copper alloys HSn70-1 + As and B30 in this paper. Therefore, when water containing sulphide is used as the source of make-up water and cooling water, S2- in water must be removed to prevent the pipelines and facilities from corroding. This means that the research results can offer theoretical guidelines for the prevention of pipelines and facilities in the power plant from corroding.

Abstract:Variations in water chemistry may lead to the release of harmful heavy metals in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs). In this study, the effects of chloride on the release of heavy metals such as Fe, Mn, As, Cr, Mo, V, Sr, and Co were examined using steel and cast iron pipe loops. After chloride was added, the relative contents of goethite (α-FeOOH), lepidocrocite (γ-FeOOH), and siderite (FeCO 3 ) in pipe scales increased, but the contents of magnetite (Fe 3 O 4 ) decreased. The most prevalent compounds were α-FeOOH and γ-FeOOH. When the chloride levels were increased, the effluent concentrations of Fe, Mn, As, Cr, Mo, V, Sr, and Co significantly increased. These heavy metals were released presumably because of the destabilization and dissolution of corrosion scales induced by chloride and adsorption site competition. Strong positive correlations were also observed between Fe&Mn, Fe/Mn&As, Fe/Mn&Cr, Fe/Mn&Mo, Fe/Mn&V, Fe/Mn&Sr, and Fe/Mn&Co, indicating the co-release of Fe, Mn, and other metals. This study may be helpful for the potential strategies on avoidance of heavy metal release and improvement of water supply security.

Abstract:The corrosion characteristics of copper microparticles and copper nanoparticles in distilled water were investigated in this paper. The Cu2+ transformations of copper microparticles and copper nanoparticles in distilled water were tested by using absorbance measurement, the structures of their corrosion products were determined by using XRD and TEM techniques. The results of absorbance measurement show that the corrosion characteristics of copper nanoparticles in distilled water are quite different from that of copper microparticles. The Cu2+ transformations ratio of copper microparticles increases slowly with the increasing of immersion time and levels off eventually, but the Cu2+ transformations ratio of copper nanoparticles increases sharply with the increasing of immersion time and gets to peak rapidly, and then decreases as the immersion time increases and levels off finally. The results of XRD present that they have different corrosion products, the corrosion products of copper microparticles in distilled water are Cu and CuO, but the nanoparticles are Cu, CuO, Cu(OH,Cl)2·2H2O and Cu2(CO3)(OH)2. All these differences owe to the size effect of copper particles.

Effect of Sulphate Concentration Change on Iron Release in Drinking Water Distribution Systems

Abstract:This study investigated the effect of sulphate concentration changes on the iron release in a drinking water distribution system caused frequently switching of the water source.The rates of iron release from corrosion scale for different water sources were analyzed with pipe section reactors designed to simulate the distribution system flow mode.The results showed that the sulphate concentration was the dominant factor that led to red water.The iron release rate from the corrosion scale correlated well with the sulphate concentration with a sulphate concentration increase from 25mg / L to 180mg / L accompanied by a Larson ratio increase from about 0.35to 1.40.The turbidity in the pipe section reactors increased 6NTU after 8h,the color increased 50degrees and the iron release rate increased 2.00mg /(m 2.h).These results indicate that the sulphate concentration should be lower than 75mg / L and the Larson Ratio should be controlled to less than 0.70for the water quality in the distribution system to meet the Chinese drinking water quality standard.Based on these results,t was suggested to be and controlled less than 0.70in order that in meet the standard of drinking in China.

Abstract:The widespread use of calcium sulfoaluminate cement (CSA) for rapidly repairing marine structures exposed to high chloride levels has spurred limited investigation into the corrosion behavior of reinforcements in low-pH CSA systems. To address this knowledge gap, researchers conducted a comprehensive study on the impact of primary ions within CSA (OH- , SO42-, and Al (OH)4- ) on steel rebars in simulated pore solutions (SPSs). The investigation employed various analytical methods such as Mott-Schottky/cyclic polarization curves, corrosion current, impedance spectrum analyses, and microstructural examinations. The results demonstrate that SO42diminishes the corrosion resistance of reinforcements by depassivating them, consequently reducing the critical chloride concentration (Ccrit). However, this influence is mitigated with elevated OH- or Al(OH)4- concentrations. Furthermore, the presence of Al(OH)4- in the pore solution contributes to an increased Ccrit by stabilizing alkalinity via OH- hydrolysis. Based on the empirical findings, the researchers developed an empirical formula for Ccrit, offering insights into estimating the service life of CSA-based concrete structures in real marine environments.

Abstract:The stability of drinking water distribution systems and the management of disinfection by-products are critical to ensuring public health safety. In this paper, the interrelationships between corrosion products in the network, microbes, and drinking water quality are elucidated. This review also discusses the mechanisms through which corrosive by-products from the piping network influence the decay of disinfectants and the formation of harmful disinfection by-products. Factors such as copper corrosion by-products, CuO, Cu2O, and Cu2+ play a significant role in accelerating disinfectant decay and catalyzing the production of by-products. Biofilms on pipe walls react with residual chlorine, leading to the formation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) that also amplify health risks. Finally, this paper finally highlights the potential of peroxymonosulfate (PMS), an industrial oxidant, as a disinfectant that can reduce DBP formation, while acknowledging the risks associated with its corrosive nature. Overall, the impact of the corrosive by-products of pipe scale and microbial communities on water quality in pipe networks is discussed, and recommendations for removing DBPs are presented.

Abstract:The adverse effects of organic matter on orthophosphate corrosion inhibition for copper pipe in simulated soft water were investigated. Sodium alginate and fulvic acid were selected to simulate extracellular polymeric substance produced by bacteria and natural organic matter in potable water. The results showed that the doses of organic matters, pH values and stagnation times had significantly affected on the function of orthophosphate corrosion inhibition for copper pipe in soft water. More soluble copper release was observed in low levels for sodium alginate (1 mg/l as TOC) and in high concentration for fulvic acid (16 mg/l as TOC). When the concentration of fulvic acid was high, the 2-week aged copper pipe released more soluble copper than the 6 and 12-month aged copper pipe. The soluble copper release increased with the reduction of initial pH value. Effect of stagnation time on soluble copper release from different aged copper pipe in soft water was highly variable. Compared to the system of no organic matters, organic matters markedly decreased the efficiency of orthophosphate corrosion inhibition for copper pipe in soft water.

Abstract:The purpose of this research is to investigate the influence of SO 4 2− in aerobic/anaerobic environment and its interaction with HCO 3 − on the corrosion behavior of Q345 carbon steel using potentiodynamic polarization, X-ray diffraction, white-light interferometer, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy methods. It was found that the corrosion rates of Q345 carbon steel are faster in aerobic environment under the synergistic effects of SO 4 2− and dissolved oxygen compared to that in the absence of oxygen. In solutions containing SO 4 2− and HCO 3 − in anaerobic environment, a high proportion of HCO 3 − /SO 4 2− leads to the passivation of Q345 carbon steel sample as a result of the competitive adsorption of HCO 3 − on substrate surface with smaller radius. As the ratio of HCO 3 − /SO 4 2− decreases, the presence of SO 4 2− can enhance the dissolution of Fe matrix, thereby resulting in the corrosion of specimens. High concentration of HCO 3 − also exhibits the suppression on corrosion because of the formation of dense corrosion products.

Abstract:The strategy for disposal of high-level radioactive waste in china is to enclose the spent nuclear fuel in sealed metal canisters which are embedded in bentonite clay hundreds meters deep in the bed-rock.The choice of container material depends largely on the redox conditions and the aqueous environment of the repository.One of the choices for the fabrication of waste canisters is copper, for it is thermodynamically stable under the saline,anoxic conditions over the large majority of the container lifetime.For this advantage,some other countries(Canada,Sweden) have selected copper as the material of nuclear waste container.However,in the early aerobic phase of the geological disposal the corrosion of copper could take place,and the corrosion behavior of copper would be influenced by the complex chemical conditions of groundwater markedly.Regularly,in atmosphere environment the semiconductor passive film which is constructed by Cu_2O would generate on the surface of copper.On the one hand,the Cu_2O film could protect copper from corrosion.On the other hand,the formation of Cu_2O film is necessary to maintain the propagation of crack during the stress corrosion cracking. Therefore,the study of the effect of water chemistry conditions on the stability of Cu_2O passive film makes great sense for the general corrosion and stress corrosion cracking of copper.For copper and copper alloy,Cl~- is a highly aggressive ion.Lots of cases of failure and corrosion behavior of copper and copper alloy in Cl~- environment have been studied.The immersion of Cl~- would affect the semiconductor properties of Cu_2O,therefore,we focused on the effect of pH and Cl~- concentration on the corrosion behavior and semiconductor properties of Cu_2O in this paper.The polarization behavior of Cu electrodes and the stability of passive film Cu_2O in boric acid buffer solution have been investigated respectively by potentiodynamic polarization,electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and semiconductor capacitance method(Mott-Schottky method).The results showed that the destruction and dissolution of the passive film Cu_2O happened in the conditions of low pH and high Cl~- concentration.The semiconductor character of passive film changed from p-type into n-type in the solution with high Cl~- concentration,so that Cl~- is more likely to enter the passive film and take complex reaction with Cu~+,which could destroy the passive film and accelerate corrosion.The passive film Cu_2O is more steady in the condition of high pH and low Cl~- concentration.

Effect of Temperature and NaClO on the Corrosion Behavior of Copper in Synthetic Tap Water

Abstract:The corrosion behavior of copper was investigated in synthetic tap water with and without sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) at different temperatures during immersion for 70 d by using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and electrochemical measurement techniques. The weight loss corrosion rate and pit depth of copper first increase and then decrease with the change in solution temperature from 25 to 80 °C. This is mainly related to the corrosion products formed on the copper surface. The main corrosion products change from Cu2O and Cu2(OH)2CO3 to CuO with the increase in solution temperature. The presence of 3 ppm NaClO slightly increases the weight loss corrosion rate and pit depth of copper under all temperatures except for 50 °C and reduces the temperature of the maximum corrosion rate from 50 to 40 °C. Free chlorine reduction accelerates the cathodic reaction of the corrosion process.

Abstract:Manganese accumulated in corrosion scales on drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) can be released into bulk water, causing discolouration and thereby leading to customer concerns about drinking water quality. A static release experiment was conducted on iron pipe scales under three different temperatures, pH values, alkalinity values, sulfate (SO42-) concentrations, and disinfectants to study the separate effect of these factors on Mn release from pipe scales under stagnant conditions. Results showed that more Mn was released from corrosion scales under the conditions of lower pH, lower alkalinity, higher temperature, and higher SO42- concentrations. Three commonly used disinfectants, sodium hypochlorite (NaClO), chlorine dioxide (ClO2), and monochloramine (NH2Cl) were found to inhibit the release of Mn from iron corrosion scales, with the ranked order of inhibitory effect of ClO2 approximate to NaClO > NH2Cl under the same CT (product of disinfectant concentration and contact time) value. The orthogonal experimental results indicated that SO42- and alkalinity had extremely significant effects on the release of Mn from pipe scales, while pH and disinfectant type had a significant impact on the release of Mn from pipe scales. Thus, the SO42- concentration and alkalinity of the bulk water should be determined to avoid excessive release of Mn into drinking water. However, further investigation of the effect of disinfectants on Mn release in DWDSs is necessary. This research helps establish a systematic understanding of the influential factors in Mn release from pipe scales into bulk water, as well as their significant relationships. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:Batch-scale experiments were done to quantitatively study the effect of inorganic chemical parameters on iron release in drinking water distribution systems. The parameters include acid-base condition, oxidation-reduction condition, and neutral ion condition. It was found that the iron release rate decreased with pH, alkalinity, the concentration of dissolved oxygen increasing, and the iron release rate increased with the concentration of chloride increasing. The theoretical critical formula of iron release rate was elucidated. According to the formula, the necessary condition for controlling iron release is that pH is above 7.6, the concentration of alkalinity and dissolved oxygen is more than 150 mg/L and 2 mg/L, and the concentration of chloride is less than 150 mg/L of distributed water.

Abstract:The effect of sulphate on the corrosion behavior of bronze under a chloride‐containing thin electrolyte layer (TEL) during wet–dry cycles has been studied by means of in situ electrochemical techniques and ex situ physical characterization. In the initial stage, corrosion rates of bronze under a chloride‐containing TEL decrease in the presence of sulphate, due to the fact that pit corrosion is inhibited by the sulphate. After long‐term exposure, however, corrosion rates are accelerated by sulphate addition, implying a synergistic effect between these components. This synergistic effect is ascribed to inhibition of the formation of protective Pb‐containing products by sulphate.

Abstract:A new partial differential model for monitoring and detecting copper corrosion products (mainly brochantite and cuprite) is proposed to provide predictive tools suitable for describing the evolution of damage induced on bronze specimens by sulfur dioxide (SO_2) pollution.
