Abstract:The safe and economical operation of any nuclear power system relies, to a great extent, on the success of the fuel and the materials of construction (Allen et al., 2010). Distinct from conventional power generation methods, a nuclear reactor is characterized by a harsh level of irradiation, very high operating temperature, and extremely corrosive environments. The behavior of fuels and materials as well as systems for fission reactors is thus complex due to the changes that the extreme environments generate on them. These kinds of changes may be seldom seen in other engineering disciplines, but this poses demanding requirements over reactor fuels, materials and systems. The design of reactor fuels, materials and systems subject to extreme environments is a major obstacle to enhancing reactor safety and economic performance of nuclear power systems. It is also essential in increasing innovation for current reactor operation improvement and future reactor design optimization. To address the challenges related to extreme reactor environments, the team of editors organizes the Research Topic "Reactor Fuels, Materials and Systems under Extreme Environments" in the journal Frontiers in Energy Research. Finally, 28 articles are collected, covering the theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on reactor fuels, materials and systems under extreme environments.

Abstract:Fast reactor plays an important role in the sustainable development of nuclear energy,and it is a key reactor type that be committed to develop all over the world.The reactor physics calculation is the basis of fast reactor core design,and the research of related methods and the development of corresponding computing codes are very impor-tant in the R&D of fast reactor theory and numerical simulation technology.In this paper,the developments of reactor physics analysis methods for the fast reactors,espe-cially the developments in the past 20 years are reviewed.By reviewing the dedicated and general computing codes developed at home and abroad for the fast reactors,the progress of fast reactor physics analysis theory is introduced.Inside,the consistency among different methods and the trend of the developments in recent years are discussed.Furthermore,the suggestions for the development of fast reactor physics analysis methods and for the progress of independent software development in our coun-try are provide.

Abstract:This article condenses current endeavors and improvements in the expansion of applications of the DualSPHysics code to analyze heat transfer in a nuclear reactor core. This includes the essential conservation equations and certain physical considerations, particularly the thermal conductivity variable model, considering changes in the reference density to maintain the accuracy in the solution. Conventionally, to study these sorts of systems, Eulerian methods have been developed, nevertheless, this kind of method based on well-defined mesh shows major restrictions. The DualSPHysics code, based on Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) technique, has shown to be a real and robust alternative since it involves a free mesh approach, and the numerical method is very well parallelized in both computational and graphical process units (CPU and GPU). The results for the improvements developed in the present work show an exceptionally good approximation with other simulation approaches and also with experimental observation in the three cases studied (1) heat transfer analysis in a bidimensional system with thermal conductivity coefficient k variable, (2) natural convection heat transfer in a horizontal cylindrical ring similar to the space between the fuel rod and the cladding and (3) heat transfer in an experimental nuclear fuel rod square arrangement like in a Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) nuclear core. Enhancements to this code (DualSPHysics) to use it in nuclear applications are fundamental in the exploitation of this technique in crucial areas of study.

Abstract:High thermal neutron fluxes are needed in some research reactors and for irradiation tests of materials. A High Flux Research Reactor (HFRR) with an inverse flux trap-converter target structure is being developed by the Reactor Engineering Analysis Lab (REAL) at Tsinghua University. This paper studies the safety of the HFRR core by full core flow and temperature calculations using the porous media approach. The thermal nonequilibrium model is used in the porous media energy equation to calculate coolant and fuel assembly temperatures separately. The calculation results show that the coolant temperature keeps increasing along the flow direction, while the fuel temperature increases first and decreases afterwards. As long as the inlet coolant mass flow rate is greater than 450 kg/s, the peak cladding temperatures in the fuel assemblies are lower than the local saturation temperatures and no boiling exists. The flow distribution in the core is homogeneous with a small flow rate variation less than 5% for different assemblies. A large recirculation zone is observed in the outlet region. Moreover, the porous media model is compared with the exact model and found to be much more efficient than a detailed simulation of all the core components.

Abstract:By the means of thermodynamic and statistic mechanics analysis , the relationship between the all species in plasma generator and reactor and their partition functions was obtained in the local equilibrium at constant temperature and pressure. The change of the distribution of all hydrogen species (states) with temperature in generator and reactor was achieved by calculating partition function, respectively. These provide a reference for further investigation.

Abstract:The gas-cooled reactor combined with Brayton cycle energy conversion system has been investigated with the application potential to meet the requirement of large power nuclear reactor systems in deep space explorations. Conceptual core design configured in the open lattice has attracted extensive attention due to the compact structure, and its heat transfer features need further investigation, including conduction, convection, and radiation. Many studies on thermal-hydraulic characteristics of similar structure reactors such as Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Sodium Cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) have been carried out. However, different operating conditions bring the distinct heat transfer features. Referring to Prometheus program, this paper analyses the heat transfer features of gas-cooled open lattice reactor by numerical simulations. The computational fluid dynamic tool (ANSYS Fluent) is mainly used to investigate the effect of circumferential rod heat conduction, thermal radiation among fuel rods, and gas flow distribution. The results show that contributions of conduction, convection and radiation to the total reactor core heat transfer should be taken into account. The maximum temperature on the walls can be lower by increasing the rod thermal conductivity, enhancing the thermal radiation among fuel rods, and increasing the gas flow of inner core. This study will help to develop the system code for the thermal-hydraulic design and safety analysis of gas-cooled open lattice reactors.
A Comparative Study of 10 Different Methods on Numerical Solving of Point Reactor Neutron Kinetics Equations

Abstract:Point reactor neutron kinetics equations describe the time dependent neutron density variation in a nuclear reactor core. These equations are widely applied to nuclear system numerical simulation and nuclear power plant operational control. This paper analyses the characteristics of 10 different basic or normal methods to solve the point reactor neutron kinetics equations. These methods are: explicit and implicit Euler method, explicit and implicit four order Runge-Kutta method, Taylor polynomial method, power series method, decoupling method, end point floating method, Hermite method, Gear method. Three different types of step reactivity values are introduced respectively at initial time when point reactor neutron kinetics equations are calculated using different methods, which are positive reactivity, negative reactivity and higher positive reactivity. The calculation results show that (i) minor relative error can be gain after three types of step reactivity are introduced, when explicit or implicit four order Runge-Kutta method, Taylor polynomial method, power series method, end point floating method or Hermite method is taken. These methods which are mentioned above are appropriate for solving point reactor neutron kinetics equations. (ii) the relative error of decoupling method is large, under the calculation condition of this paper. When a higher reactivity is introduced, the calculation of decoupling method cannot be convergence. (iii) after three types of step reactivity are introduced respectively, the relative error of implicit Euler method is higher than any other method except decoupling method. The third highest is Gear method. (iv) when the higher reactivity is introduced, the relative error of explicit and implicit Euler method are almost coincident, and higher than any other methods obviously. (v) 4 methods are suitable for solution on these given conditions, which are implicit Runge-Kutta method, Taylor polynomial method, power series method and end point floating method, considering both the accuracy and stiffness.
High Flux Reactor Review and Reactivity Control Analysis

Abstract:For over 60 years, research reactors have provided the world with a versatile tool to test materials and promote irradiation research, as well as to produce radioisotopes for medical treatments. The High Flux Reactor (HFR), as a water moderated and cooled, beryllium-reflected reactor has awarded more attention in recent years. There is a wide range of designs and applications for HFRs that based on their own situation to meet research requirements. For the purpose of reducing the volume and mass of the reactor, as well as ensuring the safety operation, it is necessary to determine the most effective reactivity control scheme, and analyze the corresponding reactivity insertion accidents. This paper is going to investigate typical high flux reactors within the same type with HFETR, summarize general description and characteristics, the uses of the high flux reactor, and reactivity control mechanisms. In addition, the associated reactivity insertion accidents were presented and analyzed. The analysis result will provide some references to further design and construction of high flux reactor.
Research On Monte Carlo Perturbation Calculation Methods Applied In Reactor Physics

Abstract:In the reactor design and analysis, there is often a need to calculate the effects caused by perturbations of temperature, components and even structure of reactors on reactivity. And in sensitivity studies, uncertainty analysis of target quantities and unclear data adjustment, perturbation calculations are also widely used. To meet the need of different types of reactors (complex, multidimensional systems), Monte Carlo perturbation methods have been developed. In this paper, several kinds of perturbation methods are investigated. Specially, differential operator sampling method and correlated tracking method are discussed in details. MCNP's perturbation calculation capability is discussed by calculating certain problems, from which some conclusions are obtained on the capabilities of the differential operator sampling method used in the perturbation calculation model of MCNP. Also, a code using correlated tracking method has been developed to solve certain problems with cross-section changes, and the results generated by this code agree with the results generated by straightforward Monte Carlo techniques.
Cross-disciplinary Reactor-to-Repository Framework for Evaluating Spent Nuclear Fuel from Advanced Reactors

Abstract:This study presents a cross-disciplinary reactor-to-repository framework to compare different advanced reactors with respect to their spent nuclear fuel (SNF). The framework consists of (1) OpenMC for simulating neutronics, fuel depletion, and radioactive decays; (2) NWPY for computing the repository footprint for SNF disposal given the thermal constraints; and (3) PFLOTRAN for simulating radionuclide transport in the geosphere to compute the peak dose rate, which is used to quantify the repository performance and environmental impact. We first perform the meta-analysis of past comparative analyses to identify the factors led previously to inconsistent conclusions. We then demonstrate the new framework by comparing five reactor types. Significant findings are that (1) the repository footprint is neither linearly related to SNF volume nor to decay heat, due to the repository's thermal constraint, (2) fast reactors have significantly higher I-129 inventory, which is often the primarily dose contributor from repositories, and (3) the repository performance primarily depends on the waste forms. The TRISO-based reactors, in particular, have significantly higher SNF volumes, but result in smaller repository footprints and lower peak dose rates. Our analysis highlights the diversity of these reactors, each of which should be evaluated individually. The open-source framework ensures proper cross-disciplinary connections between reactor simulations and environmental assessments, as well as the transparency/traceability required for such comparative analyses. It aims to support reactor designers, repository developers and policy makers in evaluating the impact of different reactor designs, with the ultimate goal of improving the sustainability of nuclear energy systems.

Abstract:A reactor is an important piece of equipment used for reactive power compensation in power system and has a significant impact on the safe operation of power system. Thermal behavior is one of the main causes of reactor failures. For an accurate analysis of the thermal behavior of reactors, electromagnetic–thermal–fluid multi-physics coupling modeling is chosen. However, there is a huge difference in size between the overall structure of the reactor and its insulating material, which makes it difficult to perform mesh generation, resulting in dense mesh and significantly increased solution degrees of freedom, thus making the solution of the reactor’s multi-physics field model very time-consuming. To address this, this paper proposes a simplified processing method to accelerate the solution calculation of the reactor’s multi-physics model. This method calculates the equivalent turns of each encapsulate with parallel coils in the reactor, simplifying the encapsulate into a single-layer coil, thereby greatly reducing the division and solution degrees of freedom of the multi-physics model, and thus accelerating the simulation calculation. Taking a BKDCKL-20000/35 dry-type air-core shunt reactor as an example, the outer diameter of the coil is nearly 12,000 times bigger than the coil insulation, which is a huge size difference. Both refined models and simplified models are established. Compared to the simulation results of the detailed model, the simplified model demonstrates good accuracy; the maximum relative error of temperature is just 2.19%. Meanwhile, the computational time of the simplified model is reduced by 35.7%, which shows promising effectiveness and significant potential for applying the optimization design and operation prediction of dry-type air-core shunt reactors for enhanced thermal performance.

Abstract:In this work, by establishing a three-dimensional physical model of a 1000-ton industrial multi-jet combustion reactor, a hexahedral structured grid was used to discretize the model. Combined with realizable k-e model, eddy-dissipation-concept, discrete-ordinate radiation model, hydrogen 19-step detailed reaction mechanism, air age user-defined-function, velocity field, temperature field, concentration field and gas arrival time in the reactor were numerically simulated. The Euler-Lagrange method combined with the discrete-phase-model was used to reveal the flow characteristics of particles in the reactor, and based on this, the effects of the reactor aspect ratios, central jet gas velocity and particle size on the flow field characteristics and particle back-mixing degree in the reactor were investigated. The results show that with the decrease of aspect ratio in the combustion reactors, the velocity and temperature attenuation in the reactor are intensified, the vortex phenomenon is aggravated, and the residence time distribution of nanoparticles is more dispersed. With the increase in the central jet gas velocities in reactors, the vortex lengthens along the axis, the turbulence intensity increases, and the residence time of particles decreases. The back-mixing degree and residence time of particles in the reactor also decrease with the increase in particle size. The simulation results can provide reference for the structural regulation of nanoparticles and the structural design of combustion reactor in the process of gas combustion synthesis. Abstract:Heat transfer characteristics of fuel assemblies for a high flux research reactor with a neutron trap are numerically investigated in this study. Single-phase turbulence flow is calculated by a commercial code, FLUENT, where the computational objective covers standard and control fuel assemblies. The simulation is carried out with an inlet coolant velocity varying from 4.5 m/s to 7.5 m/s in hot assemblies. The results indicate that the cladding temperature is always lower than the saturation temperature in the calculated ranges. The temperature rise in the control fuel assembly is smaller than that of the standard fuel assembly. Additionally, the assembly with a hot spot is specially studied, and the safety of the research reactor is also approved.
