Abstract:Nuclear energy is essential in addressing the problem of climate change and energy crisis. Liquid metal mixing phenomenon at the core outlet of liquid metal fast reactors is an important issue in Gen-IV nu-clear systems. In this paper, the experimental and numerical analysis of the liquid metal mixing process in complex jets were carried out based on the structure of fuel assembly heads in sodium-cooled fast reactors. The liquid metal mixing characteristics were obtained in the experiment. And a high fidelity LES model was developed and validated experimentally. The impact of different head structures on the mix-ing process was analyzed and an index of liquid metal temperature mixing degree was newly proposed and compared with previous formulas. Result shows that, the temperature mixing region can be divided into five zones along the flow direction. Compared to other three structures, the three-sided outlet head with offset hedge has the lowest fluctuations of velocity and temperature in the upstream of the mixing flow. Also, the three-sided outlet head with offset hedge has the best temperature mixing ability, and the index is two times larger than that of the prototype. The three-sided outlet head with offset hedge proved to be the optimal structure. (c) 2023 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The flow field in the fuel assembly of Sodium cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) is highly non-uniformed which results in quite complex heat transfer phenomena between subchannels of rod bundles.From the design and safety purpose of the reactor core, mechanisms behind these heat transfer phenomena must be analysed thoroughly under all working conditions. However, due to the decrease of the fast reactor activity and the huge experimental costs with liquid sodium, few researches have been conducted to deepen the understanding of the heat transfer mechanisms after the 1980's in spite of the large uncertainty and limited parameter ranges of existing empirical correlations. In this paper, a Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) model of two subchannels with adjacent fuel rods is used to investigate the heat transfer mechanisms under a wide range of geometry and flow conditions. The turbulent heat transfer of the liquid metal is resolved through the SST k-co turbulent model with modified turbulent Prandtl number, and the CFD model is verified with experimental data. Data analysis of the simulation results shows clearly dependence of the heat transfer mechanisms on the geometry parameters and the flow parameters. By fitting of the numerical results with the least square method, new correlations for the turbulent mixing and the rod conduction are developed. (C) 2021 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:The liquid metal fast reactor represents an important reactor type for the future development of nuclear energy. Accurately modeling and predicting the subchannel flow and heat transfer phenomenon in the rod bundles plays a key role in ensuring core safety. Consequently, a subchannel code suitable for the liquid metal fast reactor is analyzed based on the subchannel analysis code of the Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR). The modified code incorporates various types of liquid metals, such as lead, lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE), and sodium, along with their constitutive models, enhancing the applicability of the liquid metal reactor systems. This code has been verified and validated at several levels, including comparing the code simulation results with other similar subchannel codes results, high-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, and experiment data. The sensitivity analysis of core geometric parameters and turbulent mixing coefficients is performed based on the modified version code. The influence of the core geometry, including the rod Pitch to Diameter ratio (P/D), Rod to Wall gap (RTW) and the wire wrap pitch (H) on the sensitivity of outlet temperature has been investigated. The results show that the new subchannel analysis code suitable for liquid metal cooled reactor shows reasonable agreement with the verified and validated results. The geometric parameters, such as P/D, RTW and H have noticeable effects on the outlet temperature difference of the subchannels. Additionally, the outlet temperature distribution in the subchannel is significantly affected by different turbulent mixing coefficients and the distribution of the turbulent mixing coefficient also influenced by the reactor core sizes. Overall, this study could support the rod bundles design and safety analysis in the liquid metal reactors.

Abstract:The supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycle system is being considered for application in the power conversion system of advanced liquid metal fast reactors. One important research topic is the coupled heat transfer characteristics and enhanced heat transfer laws between liquid metals and supercritical fluids. However, the traditional Reynolds analogy hypothesis with a constant turbulent Prandtl number is difficult to satisfy the numerical conjugate heat transfer research of liquid metals and supercritical fluids. Therefore, based on the open-source computational fluid dynamics program OpenFOAM, a numerical method suitable for the coupled heat transfer calculation of liquid metals and supercritical fluids was developed, which can achieve precise conjugate heat transfer solutions by applying different turbulence models and heat flux models to liquid metals and supercritical fluids. Subsequently, based on this method, the coupled heat transfer behavior of liquid metals and supercritical fluids in the straight channel of a typically printed circuit heat exchanger was studied. The focus was investigating the conjugate heat transfer characteristics of liquid heavy metal lead-bismuth eutectic and liquid metal sodium with supercritical carbon dioxide. Some sensitive results, including the inlet temperature and Reynolds number of liquid metals and supercritical fluids, were qualitatively and quantitatively analyzed.

Abstract:Against the backdrop of China's ambitious three-step nuclear energy develop-ment strategy,encompassing pressurized water reactors(PWR),fast reactors(FR),and fusion reactors(FNR),the purpose of this study is to meet the pivotal need for a specialized sub-channel analysis code tailored to the unique thermal-hydraulic character-istics of liquid metal fast reactors(LMFRs).Building upon the foundational SACOS sub-channel code,the approach involves the seamless integration of LMFR-specific models.These include the wire-wrapped model,turbulent crossflow model,and liquid metal convective heat exchange model.The utilization of advanced computational techniques,such as the SIMPLE algorithm and staggered grid methodology,ensures the completion of accurate sub-channel calculations,establishing SACOS-LMR as a robust code for thermal-hydraulic safety analysis in LMFRs.Validation of the SACOS-LMR code was conducted through a sodium transient experiment involving 37-pin bundles at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology.The results not only demonstrate a commendable alignment between computed parameters(e.g.temperature distribution,pressure drop)and experimental values but also confirm the code's precision in transient analysis for LMFRs.Applying the validated SACOS-LMR code,an in-depth thermal-hydraulic safe-ty analysis of the European Lead-cooled Fast Reactor(ALFRED)core was conducted.The calculated results are not only reasonable but also exhibit consistency with compara-ble codes,affirming SACOS-LMR's applicability for LMFR core design and thermal-hydraulic analysis.In conclusion,this research represents a significant step forward in the development of LMFR technology.SACOS-LMR,with its validated capability in both steady-state and transient analysis,stands as a sophisticated and reliable sub-channel analysis tool.It not only supports LMFR core design but also contributes to the broader global pursuit of sustainable and clean energy solutions in the nuclear energy landscape.

Abstract:Liquid lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor is one of the most promising reactor types among the fourth-generation nuclear energy systems. The flow and heat transfer characteristics of lead-bismuth eutectic (LBE) are completely different from ordinary fluids due to its special thermal properties, causing that the traditional Reynolds analogy is no longer recommended and appropriate. More accurate turbulence flow and heat transfer model for the liquid metal lead-bismuth should be developed and applied in CFD simulation. In this paper, a specific CFD solver for simulating the flow and heat transfer of liquid lead-bismuth based on the k - epsilon - k(theta) - e(theta) model was developed based on the open source platform OpenFOAM. Then the advantage of proposed model was demonstrated and validated against a set of experimental data. Finally, the simulation of LBE turbulent flow and heat transfer in a 7-pin wire-wrapped rod bundle with the k - epsilon - k(theta) - e(theta) model was carried out. The influence of wire on the flow and heat transfer characteristics and the three-dimensional distribution of key thermal hydraulic parameters such as temperature, cross-flow velocity and Nusselt number were studied and presented. Compared with the traditional SED model with a constant Pr-t = 1.5 or 2.0, the k - epsilon - k(theta) - e(theta) model is more accurate on predicting the turbulence flow and heat transfer of liquid lead-bismuth. The average relative error of the k - epsilon - k(theta) - e(theta) model is reduced by 11.1% at most under the simulation conditions in this paper. This work is meaningful for the thermal hydraulic analysis and structure design of fuel assembly in the liquid lead-bismuth cooled fast reactor. Abstract:Reasonable mathematical and physical models as well as auxiliary models have been established to develop a subchannel analysis code for one fuel assembly of the Sodium-cooled Fast Reactor (SFR). The conduction model of mixed fuel UO2–PuO2 was adopted in the sub-channel analysis. The comparison of the flow velocity distribution in the fuel assembly was performed between the Chiu-Rohsenow-Todreas (CRT) and Novendstern models. Heat transfer correlations for liquid metals were compared with each other and one was selected as the optimization correlation. The validation of the code was performed with Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) 19 pin tests. The temperature profiles at the end of the heated length for low and high power cases were compared between experimental results and other codes. And then, based on the subchannel code, thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the Chinese Experimental Fast Reactor (CEFR) were investigated. Axial and radial coolant temperature profiles for different subchannels were presented. In addition, the mass flow rate with mixing effects were carefully studied. The effect of the wire was investigated and the optimization ratio of the pitch to diameter was provided according to current simulated conditions.

Abstract:The gas-cooled reactor combined with Brayton cycle energy conversion system has been investigated with the application potential to meet the requirement of large power nuclear reactor systems in deep space explorations. Conceptual core design configured in the open lattice has attracted extensive attention due to the compact structure, and its heat transfer features need further investigation, including conduction, convection, and radiation. Many studies on thermal-hydraulic characteristics of similar structure reactors such as Pressurized Water Reactor (PWR) and Sodium Cooled Fast Reactor (SFR) have been carried out. However, different operating conditions bring the distinct heat transfer features. Referring to Prometheus program, this paper analyses the heat transfer features of gas-cooled open lattice reactor by numerical simulations. The computational fluid dynamic tool (ANSYS Fluent) is mainly used to investigate the effect of circumferential rod heat conduction, thermal radiation among fuel rods, and gas flow distribution. The results show that contributions of conduction, convection and radiation to the total reactor core heat transfer should be taken into account. The maximum temperature on the walls can be lower by increasing the rod thermal conductivity, enhancing the thermal radiation among fuel rods, and increasing the gas flow of inner core. This study will help to develop the system code for the thermal-hydraulic design and safety analysis of gas-cooled open lattice reactors.

Abstract:Background: Liquid metal has been proposed as the coolant of the fourth generation nuclear reactor and the accelerator driven sub-critical system. Due to its low molecular Prandtl number (Pr), liquid metal differs from other coolants like water or gas in heat transfer. Purpose: This study aims to investigate the character of heat transfer of liquid metal inside the reactor core. Methods: Speziale-Sarkar-Gatski (SSG) Reynolds stress model was applied to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) prediction of liquid metal flow and heat transfer inside the sub-channels of the reactor core. Effect of different dimensionless parameters, e.g. Reynolds number (Re), Pr, Grashof number (Gr) and pitch-to-diameter ratio (P/D) on the turbulent heat transfer calculated results was investigated. Results: The dimensionless convective heat transfer coefficient (Nu), predicted by the CFD method, agrees well with the experimental data and the empirical relations. Conclusion: Based on the analysis of various dimensionless parameters, it is found that the heat exchange performs better in triangular fuel assembly sub-channels than that in square sub-channels, under the same condition of P/D and Re. The inhomogeneous circumferential distributions of temperature and heat transfer can be effectively improved by increasing Re and P/D or choosing coolants with large Pr. When Re is larger than 10 000, the buoyancy effect on liquid metal heat transfer could be ignored.

Abstract:This paper presents CFD analyses of heat transfer in subchannels of a Super Fast Reactor fuel assembly. Analyses are concentrated on the circumferential temperature distribution on the cladding outer surface because the Maximum Cladding Surface Temperature (MCST) has been a crucial design parameter to evaluate fuel cladding integrity of the Super Fast Reactor. Speziale non-linear high Re k–ɛ model, which can reproduce the anisotropic turbulence flow in non-circular flow channels, with two-layer near-wall treatment is adopted. The results show that heat conduction in the cladding should be considered in the CFD analyses. Larger circumferential temperature gradient occurs on the cladding surface in the edge and corner subchannels than that in the ordinary subchannel because of their special geometries causing larger heterogeneity of mass flow rate distribution inside the subchannels. Improved subchannel configurations to reduce the circumferential temperature gradient are proposed. This study will be a good guideline to the future core design improvement.

Abstract:Nucleation superheat in liquid metals is an important parameter in the safety analysis of liquid metal cooled reactor. In this paper, the effects of heat flux and velocity were analyzed based on dynamic effects under several typical conditions. The results indicated that according to different ways of boiling, the nucleation location, the superheat, and the effects of heat flux and velocity could be very different, and in many cases the effects of heat flux and velocity can be analyzed together with a combined parameter. Several typical sets of experimental data available in the literature were used and were found to compare well with our analysis, and generally the experimental data could be well explained. Abstract:Liquid metal-cooled fast reactors use liquid metals such as lead–bismuth eutectic (LBE) and sodium as the coolant, and the thermo-hydraulic characteristics of liquid metals have a large effect on the thermodynamic parameters of the reactor core. The problem is that using the traditional constant turbulent Prandtl number Pr t of 0.85 ∼ 0.9, which is generally derived from the Reynolds analogy hypothesis suitable for conventional fluids, will greatly affect the accuracy of the numerical prediction of the thermal–hydraulic properties of liquid metals. In order to obtain more accurate liquid LBE and sodium turbulent heat transfer data, this research introduces a second-order differential heat flux model (DHFM) based on the open-source computational fluid dynamics platform OpenFOAM. The turbulent heat flux model is also tested with geometrical model of a pipe flow, the square and triangular bundle flow. It is shown that the calculation of Nusselt number Nu for liquid LBE by the second-order differential heat flux model (DHFM) is larger than the correlations in the square and triangular bundle flow. While the calculated Nu for liquid sodium is smaller than the correlations in the square and triangular bundle flow. Among them, the calculated results of liquid LBE and sodium in the pipe flow are in good agreement with the experimental data and the correlations. The DHFM model has a larger error in the square and triangular bundle channels for liquid LBE and sodium. In addition, the non-dimensional temperature, temperature fluctuation and dissipation characteristics of different geometrical models are also investigated in this research. This research can serve as a reference for the numerical calculation of turbulent heat transfer in liquid metals. It also enriches the study of thermal-hydraulics in liquid metal reactors.

Abstract:The natural circulation cooling transient process for the spent fuel assembly in sodium-cooled fast reactor was investigated by Fluent code. The thermal-hydraulic phenomena and their change trends in the spent fuel assembly internal coolant channel and external flow field were acquired.The results show that the method dividing the grids of spent fuel rod gap into winding wire grids and flow field grids around winding wire is able to generate high quality structured grids in the region of spent fuel assembly.In natural circulation cooling transient process with Ar,the increase of argon flow velocity in inner sub-channels is lagged behind wall sub-channels,and the tempera-ture of inner sub-channels rises faster consequently.The axial temperature distribution of spent fuel assembly is characterized with the higher temperature in the central region and the lower temperature near the edge region.The time should not be more than 6 minutes after the spent fuel assembly is placed in argon,in order to avoid the tempera-ture of spent fuel assembly shell exceeding the design value.

Abstract:In order to improve the core power density of liquid metal reactors, narrow rectangular fuel assemblies are typically used, which have obvious advantages in heat transfer capacity. However, the flow and heat transfer characteristics in coolant passage need to be studied. In this article, the numerical simulation analysis model obtained earlier was applied to calculate the Nusselt number, friction factor, with different Reynolds number, Prandtl number, or Peclet number of lead bismuth flow in a narrow rectangular channel under high heat flux. A heating correction factor was proposed and a flow resistance model was established for high heat flux. The influencing factors of ultra-high flux reactor core, such as gap size, flow direction, single and double sided heating conditions, on the flow and heat transfer in narrow rectangular channels were explored. The results showed that gap size and aspect ratio have a certain impact on the Nu and f of narrow rectangular channels, but the influence is relatively small within the narrow rectangular channel condition range. The influence of flow direction on flow and heat transfer is minimal, the single and double sided heating conditions will bring about a difference of about 20% in Nu and a difference of about 2.5% in f . In addition, the type of liquid metal will also affect the results. The research can provide reference for the thermal design and optimization of ultra-high flux reactor cores.

Abstract:Inter-wrapper flow (IWF) is a typical thermal hydraulic phenomenon that exists in narrow gaps among the adjacent assemblies of a liquid metal fast reactor (LMFR) that can dissipate heat from assemblies and transfer heat among adjacent assemblies. Moreover, when blocked or reduced flow accidents occur, the IWF has a significant effect on reactor safety, especially reducing the peak cladding temperature. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model of the Karlsruhe liquid metal laboratory IWF experimental setup (called MYRRHA design) is built. The model contains three fuel assemblies with seven rods using lead–bismuth eutectic as working fluid. The new mesh generation method, correlation of turbulence model, and fluid–solid coupling heat transfer were considered in the CFD model. The established model was initially validated, and the simulation results were found to be in good agreement with experimental data. The influence of IWF on the thermal hydraulic characteristics within the rod bundle was revealed. The results indicated that the IWF rate can affect the heat transfer capability of the bundle under. The amount of heat removed increased by up to 10% with the IWF rate in a single bundle. The occurrence of IWF reduces the wall surface temperature and appropriately balances the temperature of adjacent bundles; however, it cannot effectively reduce the peak temperature of the cladding. The complex heat transfer characteristics and flow mechanism under the influence of IWF and wire mixing were revealed. The work presented in this paper represents an important step toward the IWF research on blocked flow scenarios.
Numerical Study on Molten Stainless Steel and Lead Bismuth Eutectic Interaction for Lead-Cooled Fast Reactors Using the ACENA Code with Experimental Validation

Abstract:Abstract The LBE- or Lead-cooled fast reactor (LFR) is an important candidate reactor for the Generation-IV nuclear energy systems, where the Molten Fuel-Coolant Interaction (MFCI) process differs from that occurred in light water reactors and sodium cooled fast reactors due to the coolant property differences. In the lack of experimental and numerical studies on MFCI process in LFRs, the experiments under eight conditions with different initial temperatures of molten metal and different depth of coolant pool are conducted in this study to research the interaction between molten stainless steel (SS) and liquid Lead Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) coolant, where the radial and axial temperature distribution data of the LBE pool are obtained to validate a 2D multiphase fluid dynamics code named ACENA, which is preliminarily developed to simulate severe accidents phenomena for heavy liquid metal cooled fast reactors. A brief description of theoretical models employed in the ACENA code is listed in this study. The comparison results show the ACENA code could attain acceptable accuracy in simulating flow and heat transfer characteristics of MFCI process. The calculated values of temperature growth peak in the LBE pool are in good agreement with the experimental data. The overall maximum deviation between the calculated and experimental temperature increase values is within the range of 10–30 K. The maximum pressure surge of the argon atmosphere covering the LBE pool does not exceed the safety limit of the reaction vessel predicted by the ACENA code corresponding to the experiment conditions. However, due to the severe electromagnetic interference during the induction heating process in experiments, the relatively accurate pressure fluctuation data were failed to be collected. According to this study, the shortcomings of the current numerical work are summarized as follows: (1) The code assumes the molten material could be fully mixed with the coolant in the control grid, so the solidification and fragmentation phenomena of the molten material could not be realistically simulated, especially for the large-sized products obtained from experiments; (2) The code assumes the reaction vessel is adiabatic and the temperature distribution of the LBE pool is uniform, but actually the temperature of LBE pool was manually adjusted to approximate thermal equilibrium. Additionally, due to the heat dissipation of the molten SS in the crucible, a thermal stratification phenomenon occurred in the LBE pool; (3) The code employs empirical formulas validated in SFRs research, while due to the physical property differences of sodium and LBE, the empirical formulas may not be completely applicable to LFRs if only by simply extrapolating. Therefore, further experimental studies and improvement of physical models are necessary for excavating potential of the ACENA code, which could close some research gaps for accident safety analysis of LFRs.
