Abstract:Different techniques such as mechanical activation, chemical activation and thermal activation have been employed to activate clay used as a cement replacement material. The clay was activated mechanically by grinding it to 250, 360 and 420 m2/kg Blaine surface areas; chemically by mixing clay with two alkalis (potassium hydroxide (KOH) and sodium hydroxide (NaOH)) with different concentrations and thermally by keeping the mortar samples at 20, 40 and 60°C. Samples were tested for compressive strength at the ages of 3, 7 and 28 days. All these methods were found to enhance the reactivity of clay. It was found that an increase in the fineness of clay increased the strength development and the fineness should be greater than that of cement in order to enhance the performance.

Abstract:Corrosion and chloride attack are the two important issues of cement mortar and concrete. The aim of this study is to design corrosion and chloride resistive cement mortar, by incorporating thermally treated clay available at Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. The clay containing low kaolinite content was converted to metakaolinite and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential thermal analysis (DTA) and Scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Six types of mortars containing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30% of metakaolin were made and studied for different parameters including compressive strength, corrosion resistance and chloride diffusion coefficients for the evaluation of the performance of metakaolin. Mortar specimens were then exposed to the corrosive environment of 3% w/w NaCl solution. It is concluded that metakaolin improves the compressive strength and 20% w/w replacement of cement in mortars show optimum contribution to the strength development, corrosion resistance and chloride attack resistance. Excess amount of metakaolin in mortar has no positive effect.

Abstract:Clay minerals are inexpensive, sustainable, and abundant natural minerals being considered as replacements for cement binders. For this purpose, clays have to be activated to improve their pozzolanic activity, i.e., to yield an amorphous aluminosilicate phase that can easily react with calcium hydroxide to form binding phases; additional calcium aluminosilicate hydrate and calcium aluminate hydrates. Activation plays a key role in boosting the cement replacing potential of clay minerals, with the key to understanding activation lying in the control of dehydroxylation. This work promotes mechanochemical activations for comprehensive executing, monitoring and understanding of the dehydroxylation during clay activation. We monitored the mechanochemical conditions, yield degree of amorphization and heat of hydration. Considering the lower dissipation of thermal energy and better control of amorphization mechanochemical conditions were set at 400 rpm for 2 h. Results point out to the disruption of the kaolinite structure on behalf of chemically bound water release and reorganization of Al chemical bonds. The results indicate that with an increase in TGA steps, there are shifts in kaolin dehydroxylation processes, such as water evaporation and spinel crystallization (DTA), as well as shifts in the respective IR bands. Additionally, there is an increase in specific surface area (BET) and a decrease in particle size (SEM, XRD). Calorimetry of the cement paste CEM I 52.5 N indicates an apparently higher thermal reactivity of the aluminate phase compared to the silicate phase as a function of the particle size distribution. The presence of the mechanochemically activated clay changed the morphology, particle size, specific surface area, amorphous content, and thus the availability of pozzolanic aluminum for cement hydration reactions, which is thereby accelerated. It was observed the aluminate phase exhibits higher reactivity. The hydration mechanisms of the silicate (C 3 S) and aluminate (C 3 A) phases as well as the depletion of SO 4 2– ions were affected. Consequently, mechanochemical processing can be utilized as a powerful tool to activate pozzolanic clay with cement-replacing potential.

Abstract:Thermally activated clays (TACs) have been identified as possible supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). To find a suitable clay and to optimise the activation process, it is necessary to determine its pozzolanic activity. However, the nature of clays is different from that of conventional SCMs. Therefore, the results of commonly used methods may differ; in some cases, they can even be misrepresented and misleading. This article aims to assess their applicability to TAC. Four direct and four indirect methods were compared by determination of the pozzolanic activity of three different clays calcined at varying temperatures. The isothermal calorimetry with lime combined with the mechanical strength's development was identified as an ideal combination. Contrarily, the lime saturation test was inapplicable. For the Frattini method, it was found to be beneficial to assess the change in activity due to the thermal treatment rather than the strict comparison with a calcium hydroxide saturation curve.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of fineness and heat-treatment on the pozzolanic and engineering properties of volcanic ash. To this end, two different fineness levels of volcanic ash, ultra-fine (VAF) and fine (VA), without and after heat treatment at different temperatures (VA550, VA650, and VA750), were partially substituted for cement. In addition to the control (100% cement), five binary mortar mixes, each containing 20% of the different types of volcanic ash (VAF and VA; heat-treated and not), were prepared. First, X-ray fluorescence (XRF), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), particle size analysis, and modified Chappelle tests were used to characterize the material. All mortar mixes were then tested for compressive strength development, water absorption, and apparent porosity. Finally, the microstructure of each of the mixes was evaluated by performing XRD, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses on paste samples at 91 days post-formation. The XRD and Chappelle reactivity results revealed increased pozzolanic reactivity with increasing volcanic ash fineness. In contrast, heat treatment adversely affected the pozzolanic reactivity of the volcanic ash due to the formation of crystalline phases at high temperatures. The mortars containing VAF20 (VAF, no heat, at 20%) showed slightly improved compressive strength (69.6 MPa) than the control (68.1 MPa) and all other binary mixes (66.7, 63.5, 64.2, and 63.9 MPa for VA20, VA20-550, VA20-650, and VA20-750, respectively) at 91 days. The mortar containing VAF20 demonstrated the lowest level of water absorption (9.3%) and apparent porosity (19.1%) of all mixes, including the control. The XRD results for the paste samples show that both VA and VAF showed the least intensity of portlandite phase, as compared to the control and other binary mixes. TGA results also show that binary mixes of VA and VAF have a reduced amount of portlandite, resulting in the densification of the mixes’ microstructures. With the addition of VAF, there is a significant shift in the FTIR band from 980 to 992 cm−1, which causes the formation of additional C–S–H gels that lead to the densification of the paste matrix. These results demonstrate that VAF exhibits high pozzolanic reactivity, making it suitable for use as a natural pozzolan that can partially substitute cement in the production of strong, durable, and environmentally friendly concrete.

Abstract:Partially replacing cement clinkers with activated clays is one of the most promising routes to decarbonise the cement industry and tackle the climate change crisis. This study systematically investigated the impact of mechanochemical activation on the physicochemical properties of kaolinite, muscovite and montmorillonite clays, including particle size distributions, morphologies, bulk and surface chemical structures. The results suggest that mechanochemical activation treatment is particularly efficient for improving the pozzolanic activity of 2:1 clays (i.e. muscovite and montmorillonite), which are difficult to effectively activate through thermal treatments and therefore not previously been extensively used as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). In addition to dehydroxylation and amorphisation, mechanochemical milling also leads to surface aluminium enrichment and reduction in binding energies of both Si and Al elements, all contributing to the enhanced pozzolanic reactivity. The outcome from this study represents a step-change in scientific knowledge and extends frontiers of developing new SCMs from sustainable resources.

Abstract:Yellow phosphorus slag (YPS) is a byproduct from the production of yellow phosphorus. It has potential pozzolanic activity and can be used as a supplementary cementitious material. However, the early strength of cement mortar decreases significantly with increasing YPS dosage, which restricts the utilization of YPS in cement and concrete. This study aimed to increase the pozzolanic activity of YPS ash by thermal activation. The strength method, alkali dissolution method and polymerization degree method were used to evaluate the effect of thermal activation at different temperatures on the pozzolanic activity of YPS ash. The results showed that YPS ash calcined at 800 °C helps to enhance the early strength because the fluorine in cuspidine (Ca4Si2O7F2) is insoluble, reducing the retarding effect on the mortar. The higher late strength of YPS ash calcined at 100 °C was due to the low polymerization degree of [SiO4]. The pozzolanic activity of YPS ash is positively correlated with the dissolution concentration of (Si + Al) and the compressive strength and negatively associated with the polymerization degree. This paper shows a possibility for the large-scale utilization of YPS.

Alkali activation of mechanically activated low-grade clay

Abstract:This article reports the results of an investigation into the efficiency of mechanical activation to increase the reactivity in alkali activated mortar synthesized from low-grade clay. Mechanical activation significantly changed the structure of clay, increasing the specific surface area, and decreasing the particle size. The 7-day compressive strength of mortar synthesized from untreated clay was 31.7 MPa, which increased to 35.3 after 4 h milling. A further increase of grinding time to 8 h did not result in any increase in compressive strength which is attributed to a decrease in the workability. However, the extent of reactivity did significantly increase as determined from solid-state MAS NMR, FTIR, and EDS analyses. Solid-state MAS NMR results revealed the increased formation of Q<sup>4</sup>(2Al) silicon sites, which is correlated with improved reaction. Furthermore, the EDS and FTIR analysis results indicated greater incorporation of aluminium into the matrix structure with increased grinding time.

Abstract:This study aims to assess the effect of using some chemical admixtures including Calcium nitrate tetrahydrate (CN) and Calcium formate (CF), Triethanolamine (TEA), and Triisopropanolamine (TIPA) on the early-age compressive strength of Portland cement mortar containing natural pozzolan (Portland-pozzolana cement: PPC). To this end, CN and CF were added to the PPC mortar during its preparation step. Afterward, TEA and TIPA as an aqueous solution were added to the mixture of clinker and natural pozzolan during grinding; finally, the physical and chemical properties of produced cement mixtures were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. The results showed that the effect of TEA and CF was far better than TIPA and CN, so that, adding 0.01 wt% of TEA to PPC was led to a 62% increase in the 1-day compressive strength of this sample. Moreover, the compressive strength of samples indicated, on average, an increase of 54% and 39% on days 2 and 3, as well as 7-to-56 respectively, compared to cement (as the control group). While adding 1 wt% of CF to PPC was led to a 41%, 23%, and 22% increase in its compressive strength on days 1, 2, and 3, as well as 7-to-56, respectively, than the control group.

Rapid Evaluation on Activity of Pozzolanic Materials

Abstract:Activity ratio Ka(a ratio between the amount of soluble SiO2 and soluble Al2O3 in saturated CaO solution and total amount of SiO2 and Al2O3 of that material) of pozzolanic material was determined by method of boiling circumfluence. It was shown by testing that there is a preferable interrelation between Ka and the standard mortar strength ratio. For the same pozzolanic material, the varying trend of Ka is similar to that of strength ratio of mortar as fineness was varied. When the SO3 content in FBC (fluidized bed combustion) ash was varied, influence of SO3 on Ka of that ash was consistent with that on strength ratio of mortar. Therefore, influence of the other factors on the activity of pozzolanic materials can be explained by Ka. It was shown by closed loop test and cross-ranged test of testing parameters that determination method on activity of pozzolanic materials is reliable and rapid. The whole test needs only several hours.

Abstract:The pozzolanic activity of calcined kaolin and its effect on the cement mortar were studied . The kaolin calcined at 676 ℃ for 1 h has the optimum pozzolanic activity, and the calcined kaolin with 74.3% SiO 2 and 90.32% Al 2O 3 (all in mass fraction) are in active form. When 15% of the calcined kaolin is mixed into Portland cement, the grain size and content of calcium hydroxide in mortar are significantly reduced, while the content of ettringaite, calcium silicate hydrates and calcium aluminate hydrates are increased accordingly , hence resulting in the improvement of the microstructure of mortar. The compressive strength of mortar by 28 days curing increases by 18%.

Abstract:This study investigates the combined effect of internal curing and pozzolanic activity in mortar through the incorporation of clay-burnt brick fines (CBBF) as a partial substitute for sand. Simultaneously, the study explores the degree of pozzolanic reactivity by replacing a part of cement with finer clay-burnt brick fines (CBBP, particle size <75 μm). These materials are sourced from waste materials generated during brick-chip production. The 50 mm cubic mortar specimens were prepared by substituting a portion of fine aggregate with pre-wetted CBBF up to 20 % v/v and replacing cement with CBBP up to 27 % v/v. Two separate sand-to-cement ratios (S/C) of 1.2 and 1.6 were used in the mortar mixes. Samples underwent mechanical testing and were analyzed using ultrasonic pulse velocity (UPV) and accelerated carbonation tests. At a S/C of 1.6, increasing CBBF content in the mortar led to higher compressive strength. Conversely, for S/C = 1.2, the optimal replacement level was 4 % v/v of CBBF, beyond which compressive strength gradually decreased due to the porous nature of CBBF particles. Moreover, an 8 % CBBF replacement demonstrated maximum resistance to carbonation. SEM analysis revealed a denser matrix, indicating the effectiveness of CBBF in enhancing mechanical and durability properties.
Enhancing reactivity in muscovitic clays: Mechanical activation as a sustainable alternative to thermal activation for cement production

Abstract:The use of calcined clays in the construction industry is thriving. However, muscovitic or illitic clays, which constitute a large portion of the available clay resources, are hardly activated by thermal processes. This work aims to enhance the reactivity of raw muscovitic clay through mechanical activation. Various combinations of milling time and rotation speed were evaluated. The results confirmed that a highly amorphous material was obtained through mechanical activation, while thermal activation led to muscovite dehydroxylation without inducing amorphisation, resulting in the formation of crystalline dehydroxylated muscovite. The reactivity of the activated clays as a potential precursor for cement production was assessed through pozzolanic activity measurements and Si and Al potential availability. Both confirmed that mechanically activated muscovitic clay presented significantly higher reactivity than calcined muscovitic clay, obtaining an excellent pozzolanic material or an alternative cement precursor. Accordingly, mechanical activation of muscovitic clays could effectively introduce these types of clay in the cement industry.

Abstract:The waste generated during ceramic polishing is typically disposed of in landfills rather than being recycled within the production facility, potentially causing environmental harm. This study aims to enhance industrial waste utilization and reduce CO 2 emissions in the cement industry by investigating the feasibility of incorporating ceramic sludge from polishing processes into an innovative binary blended cement. Different binders were prepared with varying amounts of ceramic polishing sludge (CPS), ranging from 10% to 50%, and tested against the ASTM C595 standards. The results were compared with those of ordinary Portland cement (OPC). This approach involves evaluating the pozzolanic activity and conducting an advanced characterization assessment of CPS and binary blended ceramic polishing sludge cement (CPSC) paste. This study employed a combination of physical, mechanical, and chemical tests, including setting time, particle size distribution (PSD), Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) specific surface area, compressive strength, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), heat of hydration, and differential scanning calorimetry/thermogravimetric analysis (DSC/TGA). The results indicated that CPS can be used as a pozzolanic material to create innovative binders with properties comparable to those of OPC. The Strength Activity Index (SAI) values affirmed the pozzolanic properties of CPS, exceeding 75% for up to 40% CPS replacement. Incorporating CPS in the blended cement resulted in a slower rate of cement hydration, leading to prolonged setting times and reduced early strength development. Although the compressive strength decreased with increasing CPS content, it remained within the acceptable ASTM C595 limits with up to 50% replacement. Nevertheless, the optimal replacement level of OPC with CPS was determined to be 50%. Furthermore, CPS substitution reduced the dry density and improved the water absorption and apparent porosity, reflecting microstructural changes. The SEM images revealed that the blended CPSC had a lower apparent porosity than the pure OPC. The DSC/TGA analysis demonstrated that the blended cement had a lower calcium hydroxide content and higher silica than pure OPC.

Abstract:The present investigation reports an eco-friendly biotechnology applying Paenibacilllus mucilaginosus (P.m), a silicate solubilizing bacteria, to activate pozzolanic activity of CFA. The results show SiO2 and Al2O3 dissolution rate of CFA treated by P.m and its Ca2+ absorption capacity in saturated Ca(OH)2 solutions are increased compared to raw CFA indicating that pozzolanic reactivity of CFA is improved by P.m. One reason is destruction of the anhydrite coating layer of CFA particles surface through P.m erosion. Another reason is promotion of SiO2 dissolution caused by deformation and destruction of Si-O-Si (Al) bonds by P.m. Carbonic anhydrase activity of P.m is one of the main factors involved in dissolution of SiO2, which also induces CaCO3 mineralization. The hardening characteristics and hydration products of CFA-15% lime system with different content of P.m further confirm the effects of P.m on pozzolanic activity of CFA. 40% P.m incorporation is conducive to promote CFA hydration, ettringite earlier formation and bio-mineralization, thereby improving the mechanical properties of hardened mortar. Incorporation of 40% P.m in cement blended with CFA results in that CFA content is increased by 5–20% and the 28d strength improved by 11.5–23.9 MPa. This is the first report of microbial activation of CFA pozzolanic activity.

Abstract:Reducing the environmental footprint of cement is an absolute necessity to meet the commitments of COP26 and to limit global warming to + 1.5°C compared to the pre-industrial level. In this context, particular interest has developed in recent years in the use of calcined clays as supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs). Due to their high reactivity, large reserves and homogeneous distribution on the earth's surface, calcined clays represent a viable alternative to conventional SCMs. Clay minerals are highly variable and numerous, each with their own characteristics. As a result, not all of them have potential for use as SCMs. The present paper investigated the use of palygorskite (a clay that has been relatively poorly studied) as an SCM. Two commercial palygorskites of different grades were selected and their calcination was studied by X-ray diffraction and pozzolanic activity tests. Blended cements incorporating 20% of each calcined palygorskite were prepared and the mechanical performance and resistivity of the mortars measured. The results show that the optimum calcination temperature is 800°C (allowing complete amorphization of the clay fraction and the highest pozzolanic reactivity) for both clays. Mortars made with 80% ordinary Portland cement (OPC) blended with 20% of 800°C calcined palygorskite allowed a significant increase in compressive strength and electrical resistivity compared to the reference (100% OPC). The clay sample with palygorskite as the dominant mineral exhibited the greatest pozzolanic reactivity and mechanical performance in cementitious systems, confirming that palygorskite is a clay mineral with a significant potential for a use as a SCM. The second sample with smaller palygorskite content also allowed a significant increase in mechanical performance. This demonstrated that it is not necessary to use high-purity samples and enhances the value of this type of material.

Abstract:To future-proof alkali-activation technology, there is a need to look beyond well-established precursors such as fly ash and blast furnace slag, due to resource competition, geographical distribution and technical limitations. Clay minerals are abundant and diverse aluminosilicate resources available around the world. However, due to the mineralogical complexity amongst the most common 1:1 (kaolinite, halloysite) and 2:1 (montmorillonite, illite) clay minerals, and practical issues such as workability, their use has been more limited. Recent advances have improved understanding both of pre-activation treatments (thermal, mechanical, chemical), and of the factors influencing clay reactivity, phase assemblages and properties of final products. This opens new opportunities for the exploitation of these resources to produce sustainable cements. A one-size-fits-all approach for processing and activating clay minerals is not viable. Instead, activation routes need to be tailored according to the clay mineralogy to achieve the binder properties required for key applications.

Strength and Chloride Resistance of Mortars Blended with SCBA: The Effect of Calcination and Particle Sizing on its Pozzolanic Activity

Abstract:Sugarcane bagasse was variously treated by three different processing protocols to improve the pozzolanic activity of the resulting sugarcane bagasse ash (SCBA). Three parameters were examined namely, the particle size, the calcination temperature and the duration of calcination. The resulting SCBA was blended with Portland cement to examine potential benefits upon the strength and chloride resistance of mortar specimens. As expected, the particle sizing and re-calcination, together imparted greater pozzolanic activity to SCBA. The results demonstrate that the optimal SCBA, possessing an acidic oxide (SiO 2 +Fe 2 O 3 +Al 2 O 3 ) content over 70% and LOI can be reduced to 4.3%, resulted from grinding the boiler residue to 35μm, followed by calcination for 90 min at 600°C (P3-T90). In addition, the XRD test reveals that increasing the calcination temperature up to 600°C could remove the residual carbon and other volatile compounds effectively. However, any further increase was noted to convert amorphous silica to cristobalite in SCBA itself and, also to enlarge the microcrack at ITZ in the hardened mortar. Furthermore, the optimal SCBA was found as P3-T90 in this study to produce the best blended mortar, as evident from an 18% increase in compressive strength, a 15% increase in flexural strength and a 43% decrease in chloride diffusion coefficient. This is firstly attributed to the improved pozzolanic activity and in turn, to the increasing C-S-H phase. Besides, the associated porosity and mean pore size were minimized to 15.78% and 36 nm, respectively.

Abstract:Thermoactivated recycled cement (RC) is a growing area of research and development in the cement industry. The approach represents a reversible process of cement hydration in which dehydrated compounds with similar characteristics to cement are obtained by means of thermal activation. To avoid CO2 emissions during the production of such RC, this study assesses the possibility of replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) with hardened cement powder (HCP) prepared with different proportions of hydrated lime (HL), relying on a second pozzolanic reaction, and compares it with RC mortars. Due to the thermal activation of HCP, the compressive strength increases by 11.5%. The addition of 8% HL produced an important increase in strength from 28 days to 90 days by 12.8%, although without surpassing the strength values of mortar produced only with HCP or with RC. The compressive strength results suggest the existence of a secondary pozzolanic reaction when using HCP from a cement paste source, but such a pozzolanic reaction was fully perceived in XRD patterns when using concrete as parent material, unlike cement paste, possibly due to large crystalline sand peaks that could have hindered the effective identification of smaller crystalline peaks.
