Abstract:Hexagonal barium tantalate (BaTa2O6) nanorods were synthesized by a hydrothermal method based on the reaction of concentrated Ba(OH)2 solution and Ta2O5. BaTa2O6 samples show a uniform cylindrical structure with diameters of 5-30 nm and the lengths of 50-200 nm. The formation of BaTa2O6 nanorods follows a dissolution-recrystallization mechanism and is governed by hydrothermal temperature and time. BaTa2O6 nanorod samples prepared at 270 degrees C for 72 h have exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity in the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution under UV radiation. Hydrogen-related defects were detected in BaTa2O6 nanorods, which originate from the oxygen octahedron. The number of defects was dependent on the hydrothermal temperature, and the photocatalytic activities of BaTa2O6 nanorods increase with the decrease of defect amounts. On the basis of the experiment results, the difference in photocatalytic activities for samples is mainly caused by lattice defects, which can act as inactivation centers.

Abstract:Bismuth tungstate with different structures and morphologies show different properties. The structure and morphology have been proven to be critical factors to tune the electronic properties to influence photocatalytic performance. Notably, nano-structured bismuth tungstate were found to exhibit high activity in photocatalytic degradation process. Controllable fabrication on nano structures with desired morphology is indispensable to achieve the related properties well. However, a review that declare the correlation between the property and the fabrication, structure and morphology of bismuth tungstate is still absent. Therefore, we firstly summarize a series of recent fabrication methods for various dimensional nano structures of bismuth tungstate. Then the modification of nano-structured BWO to improve the photocatalytic performance are presented, including morphological manipulation, doping or substitution, solid solution fabrication, and compound formation. The mechanism of photocatalytic oxidation and reduction process over nano-structured bismuth tungstate is also explored, especially the role of radical species. Additionally, advanced environmental application are summarized. Finally, unresolved challenges and potential applications of nano-structured bismuth tungstate are presented for future research directions.

Abstract:Photocatalytic BaTi4O9/RuO2 nanocomposites have been prepared by a solution-based impregnation method for overall water splitting into H2 and O2 under ultraviolet light irradiation. Although the specific surface area of BaTi4O9 nanobelts is far larger than that of the counterpart bulk, the nanobelts do not exhibit a much higher photocatalytic activity than the corresponding bulk. Our results suggest that the photocatalytic efficiency of nanocrystals can be significantly affected by the defects, which may further indicate the benefit from the size reduction can be canceled by a higher electron-hole recombination rate due to the defects. Furthermore, the absence of reactive facets in BaTi4O9 nanobelts may be another reason leading to the decrease of photocatalytic efficiency of nanocrystals.

Abstract:Tantalum oxide is a semiconductor material with excellent physical properties, but its wide band gap limits its application in the field of photocatalysis. In this article, we synthesized novel hexagonal Ta2O5 nanosheets with oxygen defects in one step by chemical vapor deposition. The results suggest that Ta2O5 nanosheets prepared at 500 °C (3.49 eV) have excellent photocatalytic degradation ability, and the photodegradation efficiency for RhB is 4.3 times than commercial Ta2O5 (3.7 eV). The X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results confirmed the existence of oxygen-defects in Ta2O5 nanosheets, and photoluminescence (PL) and photoelectric tests proved that oxygen- defects can form defect energy levels, thereby effectively promoting the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers in Ta2O5 nanosheets. In addition, the contribution of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in photodegradation was obtained in the following order: 1O2, > h+ ≈ OH– ≈ O2 –. The results indicated that singlet oxygen is used as the main active species in the photocatalytic degradation process of Ta2O5 nanosheets, and it can achieve high-efficiency degradation of RhB under the combined action of several other active species. This study synthesized a tantalum oxide material with a new structure through a simple method, and greatly enhanced the light absorption capacity of tantalum oxide, which provided a promising prospect for the application of tantalum oxide in the field of photocatalysis.

Abstract:Single-crystalline BaTi4O9 nanobelts 200-500 nm in width and 30-100 mu m in length have been synthesized by ion exchange between Na2Ti6O13 nanobelts and BaCl2, a so-called self-sacrificing template process. The Na(2)Ti(6)O(13)and BaTi4O9 nanobe ts were charac erized by a range of methods including powder X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and selected area electron diffraction. Furthermore, the formation mechanism of BaTi4O9 nanobelts has also been discussed in the viewpoint of the crystal structure.

Abstract:The effect of defect on the photocatalytic and photoelectric performance of BiPO4 has been revealed. The bulk defects of BiPO4 such as bismuth vacancies (V-Bi), oxygen vacancies (V-o) and so on were formed during the ball-milling process. These bulk defects of BiPO4 inhibited the separation of photo-generated charges greatly and thus reduced photocatalytic activity. Most of the bulk defects were repaired and the photocatalytic activity of BiPO4 was also recovered mostly via calcination and reflux. Reflux could repair the bulk defects of BiPO4 much better than calcination. The mechanism of the photocatalytic degradation of pollutants over BiPO4 was not changed by defects, and the main oxidation active species of BiPO4 is photo-generated hole. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V.
