Abstract:Bi-modified Fe3O4, with strong magnetism, was synthesized through hydrothermal treatment using Fe3O4 as the supporter. X-ray diffraction, vibrating sample magnetometer, UV-Vis diffuse reflection spectrum, scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscopy were used to characterize the product. Photocatalytic performance of the samples under the irradiation of visible light (lambda>420) were investigated using Congo Red aqueous solution as probe. Significantly enhanced photoactivity was observed and a mechanism was also proposed.

Abstract:Multiferroic BiFeO3–(Na0.5Bi0.5)TiO3 (BFO–NBT) nanopowders were successfully synthesized by a sol–gel method, and the visible-light photocatalytic and magnetic properties of BFO–NBT nanopowders were investigated. X-ray diffraction results indicated that the adding of NBT and the excess of natrium source could suppress the formation of secondary phases and made it easier to obtain single perovskite phase. High photoactivity of this catalyst for Rhodamine B (RhB) degradation under visible-light irradiation was detected, which is due to narrow band gap energy of 2.08 eV, higher surface area and pure phase compounds with no or less amounts of impurities. The BFO–NBT nanopowders showed a weak ferromagnetic order at room temperature, which should be attributed to the size-confinement effects of the nanostructures. It is suggested that BFO–NBT is a kind of new narrow band gap semiconductor visible-light photocatalyst with broad application prospects, in addition to potential applications for novel magnetoelectric devices.

Abstract:Nanostructured BiFeO3 particles have been synthesized by a hydrothermal method, and the effects of particle size on photocatalytic activity and magnetic property of BiFeO3 were investigated. The optical absorption spectra indicate that the band-gap energy increases with decreasing crystalline size due to the quantum-size effect. The enhancement of room-temperature weak ferromagnetism can be observed in nanoscale BiFeO3 particles, which should be attributed to the size-confinement effect on the magnetic ordering. In addition, BiFeO3 nanoparticles with diameter about 5 nm show good photocatalytic performance by photodegradation of Congo red under visible-light (lambda>400 nm) irradiation.

Abstract:Perovskite-type BiFeO3 nanofibers with wave nodes-like morphology were prepared by electrospinning. The nanofibers show a highly enhanced visible-light-active photocatalytic property. The results also showed that the diameter could affect the band gap and photocatalytic performances of nanofibers. Additionally, weak ferromagnetic behaviors can be observed at room temperature, which should be correlated to the size-confinement effect on the magnetic ordering of BiFeO3 structure.

Abstract:Magnetic BiOBr/SrFe12O19 nanosheets were successfully synthesized using the hydrothermal method. The as-prepared samples were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and UV-visible diffused reflectance spectra (UV-DRS), and the magnetic properties were tested using a vibration sample magnetometer (VSM). The as-produced composite with an irregular flaky-shaped aggregate possesses a good anti-demagnetization ability (Hc = 861.04 G) and a high photocatalytic efficiency. Under visible light (λ > 420 nm) and UV light-emitting diode (LED) irradiation, the photodegradation rates of Rhodamine B (RhB) using BiOBr/SrFe12O19 (5 wt %) (BOB/SFO-5) after 30 min of reaction were 97% and 98%, respectively, which were higher than that using BiOBr (87%). The degradation rate of RhB using the recovered BiOBr/5 wt % SrFe12O19 (marked as BOB/SFO-5) was still more than 85% in the fifth cycle, indicating the high stability of the composite catalyst. Meanwhile, after five cycles, the magnetic properties were still as stable as before. The radical-capture experiments proved that superoxide radicals and holes were main active species in the photocatalytic degradation of RhB.

Abstract:Visible light-responsive Fe 3 O 4 @g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites were prepared by hydrothermal method with g-C 3 N 4 nanosheets as the substrates.The photocatalytic performances of the Fe 3 O 4 @g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites were evaluated in photo Fenton-like discoloration of RhB dye using H 2 O 2 as an oxidant under visible-light irradiation.Meanwhile, the reusability and magnetic properties were also investigated.The results revealed that the Fe 3 O 4 @g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites showed considerable photocatalytic activity, and exhibited excellent reusability with almost no change after four runs, and more importantly, Fe 3 O 4 @g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposites could be recovered magnetically.Therefore, the fabricated Fe 3 O 4 @g-C 3 N 4 nanocomposite photocatalyst is a promising candidate for energy conversion and environmental remediation.

Abstract:Polycrystalline BiFeO3 nanoparticles (size 30 similar to 50 nm) were prepared by a simple microwave synthesis technique. The nanoparticles were characterized by XRD, TEM and TG-DTA. The applied experiments show that they are very efficient for photo-catalytic decomposition of organic contaminants under irradiation ultraviolet frequency. The as-obtained BiFeO3 nanoparticles also demonstrate strong ferromagnetism of about 0.045 mu(B)/Fe at room temperature, which is in good agreement with theoretical calculations.

Abstract:BiFeO3 nanoparticles (BFO-NPs) have been successfully synthesized through modified microwave-assisted hydrothermal method. The obtained BFO-NP was hexagonal phase with R3c structure and covered with a large number of surface hydroxyl groups. Compared with the bulk BiFeO3 microsphere, BFO-NP has much higher purity and similar band gap energy, about 2.10 eV. The photocatalytic performance of BFO-NP was evaluated by Rhodamine B (RhB) removal without any sacrificial agent under visible-light irradiation. A fivefold increase in the rate of RhB degradation and mineralization was obtained, which should result from effective separation of the electron-hole pairs. Furthermore, the scavenger-experiments reveal that photo-generated holes and hydroxyl radicals were the primary reactive species. This study opens a new pathway to synthesize BiFeO3 nanoparticle by hydrothermal method and provides a referential route for other perovskite photocatalysts. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. Ferromagnetism and enhanced photocatalytic activity in Nd doped BiFeO 3 nanopowders

Abstract:Nd Doped BiFeO 3 (Bi 1−x Nd x FeO 3 , x = 0–0.4) nanopowders with size from 8 to 22 nm were synthesized by a simple soft chemical route using nitrates of bismuth, iron and neodymium. Effects of the Nd dopant on the structural, photocatalytic activity, and ferromagnetic properties of BiFeO 3 nanopowders have been studied. The X-ray diffraction and Raman scattering spectra results reflect that the crystal structure of the samples remains stable for x ≤ 0.2, while compositional-driven phase transition from rhombohedral to orthorhombic is observed at x = 0.2. Magnetic hysteresis loops reveal that Bi 0.8 Nd 0.2 FeO 3 possess the largest remnant magnetization ( M r ) among the Bi 1−x Nd x FeO 3 samples. It is revealed that the photocatalytic activity to decompose rhodamine B increases in Bi 1−x Nd x FeO 3 as x increases from zero to 0.2. The maximum in photocatalytic activity near the phase boundary of x = 0.2 is explained by an anomalously high dielectric constant that enlarges the width of the space-charge region.

Abstract:Bi Fe O 3 films prepared by pulsed laser deposition on Pt∕TiO2∕SiO2∕Si substrates were studied as photoelectrode for water splitting. Under visible-light irradiation, the photocurrent intensity of the polycrystalline BiFeO3 film was found to double that of the amorphous one in a three-electrode cell. The incident photon to current conversion efficiency for the polycrystalline BiFeO3 electrode was approximately 16% at 350nm and 7% at 530nm at 1.5V (versus saturated calomel electrode). The ferromagnetism of the amorphous BiFeO3 film was an order of magnitude weaker than that of the polycrystalline one, supporting the “size effect” explanation for magnetic origin.

Abstract:Novel magnetic γ-Fe2 O3/BiOI nanocomposites with visible light response are successfully fabricated and characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD),scanning electron microscopy (SEM),UV-Vis diffuse reflectance (UV-Vis DRS),energy dispersive elemental analysis (EDS) and magnetic characterization (VSM),respectively.The photocatalytic activities of the γ-Fe2 O3/BiOI products are evaluated via the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB) solution under visible-light radiation.The results show that better photocatalytic activity can be achieved by using 5％ of γ-Fe2O3/BiOI magnetic composites as catalyst.The degradation rate reaches 97％ after degradation for 60 min.Moreover,rapid separation and recovery of the γ-Fe2O3/BiOI magnetic composites can be facilitated under the external magnetic field.The photocatalytic degradation rate of MB is only slightly decreased after 3 cycles,indicating good repeatability.

Abstract:Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) uniform microcrystals with various morphologies (microspheres and micro/submicrocubes) were successfully synthesized by a controlled hydrothermal method. The resulting microstructures were characterized using X-ray diffraction, scanning/transmission electron microscopies and Raman spectroscopy. Possible formation mechanism for BiFeO3 microcrystals was proposed. UV-vis spectra showed that the optical properties of the microsized BiFeO3 crystals were strongly related to their shape and size. We further demonstrated the useful photocatalytic activity of these regular-shaped structures as determined by degradation of Congo red under visible-light irradiation (lambda > 400 nm). Additionally, magnetic responses were observed to be influenced by the morphology of as-synthesized BiFeO3 products, and the ferroelectric performance of BiFeO3 submicrocube was also Studied by piezoelectric force microscopy (PFM). Being a multiferroic semiconductor with suitable narrow band gap (similar to 2.2 eV) and uniform morphologies, these BiFeO3 microcrystals might be useful for the design of devices combining magnetic, electronic, and optical functionalities.

Abstract:Many previous studies have underestimated the role of magnetic components in improving photocatalytic performance. It is significance to explore the migration mechanism of photoinduced carriers in magnetic heterojunction. Here, a magnetic heterojunction, BiOI/BaFe12O19, was synthesized by a simple preparation method. The optimal synthesis conditions and photocatalytic reaction conditions were explored. The growth mechanism of bismuth iodide oxide (BiOI) was elaborated by introducing a micromagnetic field stemming from barium ferrite (BaFe12O19). The electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), Mott–Schottky curve (MS), transient fluorescence spectrometer (PL), and photocurrent response plot (i ~ t) tests indicated that the BiOI/BaFe12O19 possessed a higher transfer capacity of electrons, higher separation efficiency of photoinduced carriers, stronger photocurrent response, and higher carriers density, compared with pure BiOI. The ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer (UV–vis DRS), electron paramagnetic resonance spectrometer (EPR), MS, and quenching experiments revealed band structure configuration and migration mechanism of photoinduced carriers. The enhancement mechanism of photocatalysis and photocatalytic reaction mechanism was clearly proclaimed in BiOI/BaFe12O19 catalytic system.Graphical Abstract

Abstract:SrFe12O19/BiVO4 was synthesized by chemical coprecipitation method using tartaric acid as complexant. X-ray diffraction investigation revealed that the introduction of SrFe12O19 did not change the crystal orientation of monoclinic architecture BiVO4. Micro-morphology study indicated that BiVO4 molecules uniformly distributed on the surface of hexagonal SrFe12O19 particles. Vibrating sample magnetometer measurement manifested that 15%SrFe12O19/BiVO4 possessed better magnetic property, which was conducive to its separation and reuse. Ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer detection showed the strong absorption of the composite in visible light. Photocatalytic performances of as-prepared composites were investigated with the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light irradiation. The maximum degradation ratio of MB with 15%SrFe12O19/BiVO4 was 93% at 5 h, and the recovery ratio of the magnetic catalyst was above 90% in each cycle. It was confirmed that the photodegradation process of MB was first-order reaction, and the dominant active species were O (2) (.) radicals and holes.

Abstract:Bismuth ferrite (BiFeO3) nanofibers were prepared by combining the electrospinning technique with sol–gel chemistry. The structural features of the as-prepared nanofibers were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The obtained BiFeO3 nanofibers showed a rhombohedral perovskite structure after getting annealed in an argon atmosphere. Both SEM and TEM results showed that BiFeO3 fibers were composed of nanocrystalline particles. The photocatalytic behaviors of BiFeO3 nanofibers were investigated by the degradation of Rhodamine B (RhB). BiFeO3 nanofibers exhibited excellent catalytic activity under UV light irradiation, as well as under visible light irradiation in the presence of H2O2. The catalyst was further examined by magnetic measurement. The BiFeO3 nanofibers exhibited a ferromagnetic behavior at room temperature, which was associated with the nanometer-size of BiFeO3 particles. This provides an easy and efficient way to recover BiFeO3 photocatalysts from the suspension system by applying an external magnetic field.

Abstract:Well-polarized BiFeO3 nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by a facile electrical poling method with the assist of a soluble organic-inorganic composite film. From XRD, TEM and SEM studies, no significant change in the crystal structure or morphology was detected after the electrical poling process. The visible-light driven photocatalytic process of poled BiFeO3 nanoparticles was accelerated by 2 times compared to unpoled BiFeO3. By combining time-resolved photoluminescence (PL), photoinduced silver deposition testing and photoelectrochemical measurements, it can be revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic performance of poled samples can be properly attributed to the promoted separation and prolonged lifetime of the photogenerated carriers caused by the ferroelectric polarization. These findings may offer a new route to promote the photocatalytic or photoelectric performances of BiFeO3 for advanced applications by adjusting the ferroelectric polarization.
Visible Light Photocatalytic and Magnetic Properties of Nd Doped Bi2Fe4O9 Powders

Abstract:Nd doped Bi2Fe4O9 powders having compositions Bi2 (1−x) Nd2xFe4O9 (x = 0, 0.02 and 0.05) have been fabricated by a low-temperature solid-state chemical reaction method. Analysis of the X-ray diffraction data reveals that all samples are indexed as a Bi2Fe4O9 orthorhombic structure described by the space group Pbam and lattice structural distortions observed through Nd substitution. The morphology, particle size and chemical compositions of powders have been investigated by using Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscope equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Enhancement in photocatalytic properties by the degradation of Rhodamine B aqueous solution under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) is found to be associated with the distortion of structure, the variation of morphology, the decrease of average particle size and the reduction of band gap. A weak ferromagnetism with an enhanced saturated magnetization and remnant magnetization at room temperature is observed in Bi1.9Nd0.1Fe4O9, which is quite different from the linear M-H relationship found in Bi2Fe4O9. Our results indicate that the introduction of Nd ions will significantly modify crystal structure, grain size, morphology, and energy band configuration in Bi2Fe4O9 powders, which gives rise to the improvement in its photocatalytic activity and magnetic properties.

Abstract:BiFeO3/CeO2/Bi2Fe4O9 (BFO-CF) composite and BiFeO3 nanotube were synthesized via the electrospinning method. The obtained nanotubes were characterized to analyze the structural, optical and magnetic properties. Results of XRD patterns and Rietveld analysis further confirmed the existence of multiple phases in BFO-CF composite, which plays an important role in terms of enhanced photocatalytic and magnetic properties. The selected area electron diffraction (SAED) pattern demonstrated single-crystalline structure of pure BiFeO3 nanotube and polycrystalline phases of BFO-CF composite. It was found that BFO-CF composite with an average diameter of 79.4 nm showed size effect, which enhanced the photocatalysis and magnetism. Magnetic measurements at 300 K exhibited higher values of remanent magnetization and coercivity in BFO-CF composites. The results of switching field distribution (SFD) measurement in BFO-CF composite at 300 K exhibited higher values of double peak than corresponding values at 10 K, which indicated lower temperature can inhibit magnetic reversal and weaken exchange coupling interaction between hard and soft phase. UV–vis spectrum measurements showed excellent visible light response, with a slight red shift occurring in the cut-off wavelength of BFO-CF composite. The measurement results suggested formation of BFO-CF composite, that induce higher separation efficiency of e−/h+ pairs, thus enhancing photocatalytic properties than that of BFO nanotube, which could be a suitable candidate in the photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants.

Bifeo3 Particles: Morpholog Control by Kno3-Assisted Hydrothermal Synthesis and Visible-Light Photocatalytic Activities

Abstract:BiFeO3 particles with various morphologies and sizes were synthesized by a KNO3 assisted hydrothermal method. The Effect of KNO3 concentration was studied on the morphology and size of BiFeO3 crystal. The BiFeO3 samples were characterized using XRD, SEM, TEM and UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results show that the morphology and size of the micro-/nano BiFeO3 crystals not only strongly influence the optical response but also the visible-light photocatalytic activities. The absorption edge shifts to shorter wavelength and the photocatalytic activity enhances with decrease in the size of BiFeO3 particles. The results reveal that BiFeO3 can also be used as an effective photocatalyst under visible light in addition to its ferroelectric and magnetic applications.
