Abstract:We first show that for a bounded pseudoconvex domain with a manifold quotient of finite-volume in the sense of Kahler-Einstein measure, the identity component of the automorphism group of this domain is semi-simple without compact factors. This partially answers an open question in [Fra95]. Then we apply this result in different settings to solve several open problems, for examples, (1). We prove that the automorphism group of the Griffiths domain [Gri71] in ℂ^2 is discrete. This gives a complete answer to an open question raised four decades ago. (2). We show that for a contractible HHR/USq complex manifold D with a finite-volume manifold quotient M, if D contains a one-parameter group of holomorphic automorphisms and the fundamental group of M is irreducible, then D is biholomorphic to a bounded symmetric domain. This theorem can be viewed as a finite-volume version of Nadel-Frankel's solution for the Kahzdan conjecture, which has been open for years. (3). We show that for a bounded convex domain D⊂ℂ^n of C^2-smooth boundary, if D has a finite-volume manifold quotient with an irreducible fundamental group, then D is biholomorphic to the unit ball in ℂ^n, which partially solves an old conjecture of Yau. For (2) and (3) above, if the complex dimension is equal to 2, more refined results will be provided.

Abstract:A compact polyhedron X is said to have the Bounded Index Property for Homotopy Equivalences (BIPHE) if there is a finite bound B such that for any homotopy equivalence f : X -> X and any fixed point class F of f, the index vertical bar ind(f, F)vertical bar <= B. In this note, we consider the product of compact polyhedra, and give some sufficient conditions for it to have BIPHE. Moreover, we show that products of closed Riemannian manifolds with negative sectional curvature, in particular hyperbolic manifolds, have BIPHE, which gives an affirmative answer to a special case of a question asked by Boju Jiang.

Abstract:We construct closed, aspherical, smooth 4-manifolds that are homeomorphic but not diffeomorphic. These provide counterexamples to a smooth analog of the Borel conjecture in dimension four. Our technique is to apply the `reflection group trick' of the first author to pairs of exotic 4-manifolds with boundary constructed by Hayden and Piccirillo.

Abstract:We investigate the geometry of asymptotically flat manifolds with controlled holonomy. We show that any end of such manifold admits a torus fibration over an ALE end. In addition, we prove a Hitchin-Thorpe inequality for oriented Ricci-flat 4-manifolds with curvature decay and controlled holonomy. As an application, we show that any complete, asymptotically flat, Ricci-flat metric on a 4-manifold which is homeomorphic to R-4 must be isometric to the Euclidean or the Taub-NUT metric, provided that the tangent cone at infinity is not R x R+.

Abstract:Let $X$ be a complex projective variety with only canonical singularities and with trivial canonical bundle. Let $L$ be an ample line bundle on $X$. Assume that the pair $(X,L)$ is the flat limit of a family of smooth polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. Assume that for each singular point $x \in X$ there exist a Kahler-Einstein Fano manifold $Z$ and a positive integer $q$ dividing $K_Z$ such that $-\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ is very ample and such that the germ $(X,x)$ is locally analytically isomorphic to a neighborhood of the vertex of the blow-down of the zero section of $\frac{1}{q}K_{Z}$. We prove that up to biholomorphism, the unique weak Ricci-flat Kahler metric representing $2\pi c_1(L)$ on $X$ is asymptotic at a polynomial rate near $x$ to the natural Ricci-flat Kahler cone metric on $\frac{1}{q}K_Z$ constructed using the Calabi ansatz. In particular, our result applies if $(X, \mathcal{O}(1))$ is a nodal quintic threefold in $\mathbb{P}^4$. This provides the first known examples of compact Ricci-flat manifolds with non-orbifold isolated conical singularities.

Abstract:This paper establishes a significant result concerning the absence of conjugate points in certain complete Riemannian manifolds. Specifically, we demonstrate that any complete non-compact manifold with curvature bounded below and an Anosov geodesic flow does not possess conjugate points. This resolves an open problem left by R. Mañé in [9] and subsequently highlighted by [7].

Abstract:We construct a quasiconformally homogeneous hyperbolic Riemann surface—other than the hyperbolic plane—that does not admit a bounded pants decomposition. Also, given a connected orientable topological surface of infinite type with compact boundary components, we construct a complete hyperbolic metric on the surface that has bounded geometry but does not admit a bounded pants decomposition.

Abstract:In this paper, we give a classification of all compact Hermitian manifolds with flat Bismut connection. We show that the torsion tensor of such a manifold must be parallel, thus the universal cover of such a manifold is a Lie group equipped with a bi-invariant metric and a compatible left invariant complex structure. In particular, isosceles Hopf surfaces are the only Bismut flat compact non-Kähler surfaces, while central Calabi-Eckmann threefolds are the only simply-connected compact Bismut flat threefolds.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that for any finite subgroup $\Gamma < O(4)$ acting freely on $\mathbb{S}^3$, there exists a $4$-dimensional complete Riemannian manifold $(M,g)$ with ${\rm Ric}_g \geq 0 $, such that the asymptotic cone of $(M,g)$ is $C(\mathbb{S}_\delta^3 /\Gamma )$ for some $\delta = \delta (\Gamma ) >0$. This answers a question of Bruè-Pigati-Semola [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.03839" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.03839">arXiv:2405.03839</a>] about the topological obstructions of $4$-dimensional non-collapsed tangent cones. Combining this result with a recent work of Bruè-Pigati-Semola [<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2405.03839" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2405.03839">arXiv:2405.03839</a>], one can classify the $4$-dimensional non-collapsed tangent cone in the topological sense.

Abstract:We show that extended graph 4-manifolds with positive Euler characteristic cannot support a complex structure. This result stems from a new proof of the fact that there is no compact complex surface which is homotopy equivalent to a closed real-hyperbolic 4-manifold. Finally, we construct infinitely many extended graph 4-manifolds with positive Euler characteristic which support almost complex structures.
