Abstract:The passivation behavior of the black rebar without mill scale is briefly introduced. The passive film on the descaled rebar generated by anodic polarization is mainly composed of γ-Fe2O3 and Fe3O4, and the one produced by natural immersion is mainly Fe3O4 or Fe3O4 plus some γ-Fe2O3 mixed in the outer layer.

Abstract:The corrosion mechanisms of rebar with mill scale are discussed in this chapter. The hot-rolled rebars with rust stains are ready to corrode when there is water or aggressive ions, and the rusty rebars are difficult to be re-passivated in concrete. The galvanic corrosion is considered to be the induction of corrosion of the black rebars with mill scale. The main charge carriers are analyzed to be the interstitial metallic ions, not the oxygen vacancies. A unified explanatory model for the passivation and corrosion of rebar is given according to the observations.

Abstract:The principles and measures for protection of hot-rolled rebars are briefly introduced. The high-temperature rapid phosphating to improve the atmospheric corrosion resistance and the cathodic prevention using sacrificial anodes for rebars subject to chlorides are recommended. It should be careful to apply the electro-chemical desalination or re-alkalization to the actual rebars with mill scale, and it is suggested to use the ultra-high performance concrete as a repair material to protect the deteriorated normal concrete structures.

Abstract:The polarization behavior of rebar with mill scale and stains was investigated in simulated solutions with and without chlorions.The results showed that the hot-rolled rebar without and with stains could be passivated in strong alkali solutions without chloride, but the latter usually needs higher passive current density.Dense mill scale had some protective function when pH=10~12.5, but became unstable when pH≥13.5.The rebar with dense mill scale and without stains also could be passivated in strong alkali solutions with some chlorides, but the rusted one kept being in active corrosion state.

Abstract:Based on the fundamental theory of electrochemical anodic polarization, simulated concrete is doped with corrosion inhibitor to prevent corrosion by chloride ion in the marine environment. Thus, with reference to the potential-time curves obtained in different concrete environments and construction conditions, the early dynamic state of active transition of rebar passive films in concretes can be quickly characterized. According to the experiments, the characteristics of passive active transition are synchronous with rebar corrosion. This helps to systematically study the influence of different components of concrete and external media on the durability of the concrete structure. The strong alkaline environment of the concrete is useful in controlling corrosion rate of reinforcing bar. As one of the additional protective measures of the durability of the concrete structure, corrosion inhibitor's long-term performance contains uncertainty.

Abstract:Electrochemically corroded reinforced concrete specimens are observed by a digital microscope and a scanning electron microscope to study the critical thickness of the corrosion layer at concrete inner and outer surface cracking; the rust distributed at the steel–concrete interface and in corrosion-induced cracks are also investigated. This study found that a uniform mill scale layer exists on the surface of the corroded steel bar and that rust does not fill the corrosion-induced cracks before concrete surface cracking in the electrochemically corroded reinforced concrete specimens.

Abstract:This review summarizes the latest research progress in regard to the bond behavior of corroded reinforcing steel bar. The literature survey indicates that the previous studies mainly focus on the deterioration of bond strength. The primary factors influencing bond strength, including main bar corrosion, concrete cover, concrete type, stirrups, stirrup corrosion, and corrosion rate, have been well recognized. However, the existing models for bond strength are mostly developed based on specific test results and are not generalized. The corrosion-induced surface crack width is an ideal parameter for the evaluation of bond strength, but models in this respect are still scarce. As for the bond-slip behavior, literature studies reveal that the bond-slip mechanism is hardly affected by corrosion. Currently, discrepancies exist regarding the corrosion influence on the key parameters that shape the bond-slip curves. Preliminary comparisons of the existing bond-slip models show that reliable and generalized models remain to be developed based on larger database. Studies on the bond behavior of corroded steel bar under cyclic loading are quite few. The limited test results indicate that the repeated loading without changing sign shows no apparent influence on bond strength, whereas the cyclic reversed loading exacerbates the corrosion-induced bond deterioration. Knowledge gaps and research areas where further investigations are required are outlined.

The mill scale formed at a relatively higher temperature with a rapid cooling is usually composed of FeO, Fe3O4, and Fe2O3 from inside to outside, forming a trilayer structure. Nowadays it is mainly composed of Fe3O4 obtained by the controlled rolling and cooling process for high strength rebars.

Abstract:The corrosion of steel rebars is a prevalent factor leading to the diminished durability of reinforced concrete structures, posing a significant challenge to the safety of structural engineering. To tackle this issue, extensive research has been conducted, yielding a variety of theoretical insights and remedial measures. This review paper offers an exhaustive analysis of the passivation processes and corrosion mechanisms affecting steel rebars in reinforced concrete. It identifies key factors such as chloride ion penetration and concrete carbonization that primarily influence rebar corrosion. Furthermore, this paper discusses a suite of strategies designed to enhance the longevity of reinforced concrete structures. These include improving the concrete protective layer's quality and bolstering the rebars' corrosion resistance. As corrosion testing is essential for evaluating steel rebars' resistance, this paper also details natural and accelerated corrosion testing methods applicable to rebars in concrete environments. Additionally, this paper deeply presents an exploration of the use of X-ray computed tomography (X-CT) technology for analyzing the corrosion byproducts and the interface characteristics of steel bars. Recognizing the close relationship between steel bar corrosion research and microstructural properties, this paper highlights the pivotal role of X-CT in advancing this field of study. In conclusion, this paper synthesizes the current state of knowledge and provides a prospective outlook on future research directions on the corrosion of steel rebars within reinforced concrete structures.

Abstract:This study investigated a reinforced concrete specimen that had deteriorated in an artificial environment for 2. years. The steel/concrete interface and corrosion-induced cracks were observed by SEM to investigate the millscale on the rebar surface and the distribution of rust. The millscale was not further oxidised before the surface cracking of the concrete cover. The penetration of corrosion products into concrete and the formation of a corrosion layer proceeded simultaneously. The rust did not fill the corrosion-induced cracks in concrete. Instead of the three-stage model, a two-stage model is proposed to describe the concrete cracking process induced by steel corrosion. © 2012 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract:The microstructures of steel bars were studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and the mechanism of corrosion of steel bars under the corrosion factors was elucidated. The results show that the passivation film and corrosive surface of the steel surface in the solution of the chloride-containing salt were coarser and the surface state was denser. The main corrosion products are FeOOH and FeO. The surface of the steel immersed in the simulated carbonized solution had loose pores. The main components are FeOOH, Fe 3 O 4 , and Fe 2 O 3 . The surface of the steel bar has a large amount of yellowish brown corrosion products in the simulated carbonization and chloride salt. The surface of the corrosion products was stripped and the main components are FeOOH, Fe 3 O 4 , and FeCl 3 , where the content of FeOOH is as high as 60%. The peak value of iron is gradually increased from the simulated chloride salt solution to the carbonized solution to the combined effect of carbonation and chloride salt; the iron oxide content is increased and corrosion of steel is obviously serious.

Abstract:In order to study the corrosion mechanism of carbon steel, the passive film characteristics, critical chloride threshold and depassivation of HPB335 carbon steel in different solutions were studied. This study mainly used Mott-Schottky analysis, open-circuit potential, linear polarization resistance and point defect model (PDM) to study the passive film characteristics and depassivation mechanism of carbon steel. The experimental results show that the passive film quality and aggressive ions threshold of carbon steel in highly alkaline solutions are mainly related to pH. In the characteristics of the passive film, the correlation between the resistance and the chloride threshold is relatively large. In addition, PDM was used to study the depassivation mechanism of carbon steel. This study demonstrates the effectiveness of PDM for passivation and depassivation of carbon steel in highly alkaline solutions.

Abstract:This paper describes the corrosion process of reinforcing steel under both chloride attack and mechanical loading. Molecular dynamics simulation is adopted to investigate the evolution process of passive film and oxidation process of reinforcement. The mean square displacement and self-diffusion coefficient of O-2 under different conditions are also obtained based on molecular dynamics simulation. It is shown that the present of chlorides can increase the energy of Fe atoms on the surface of Fe3O4 substrate, leading Fe atoms to separate from Fe3O4 easily and to get more chance to react with oxygen atoms. The interaction of chloride attack and mechanical loading can aggravate the damage of passive film on the surface of reinforcement and result in an increase of oxidation depth of Fe matrix. The coupled effects of chloride and static loading can accelerate the diffusion of O-2 to the iron matrix, thus increasing the oxidation reaction between the iron matrix and O-2.
Semiconducting Behaviour and Corrosion Resistance of Passive Film on Corrosion-Resistant Steel Rebars

Abstract:Chloride-induced corrosion of steel rebars is one of the major causes of the premature failures of reinforced concrete structures served in different environments. This paper investigates the semiconducting behaviour and corrosion resistance of the passive film formed on the corrosion-resistant rebars exposed to simulated concrete pore solutions with different pH values and chloride concentrations. The electronic properties of the passive film were studied using potentiodynamic measurements and capacitance measurements (Mott–Schottky analysis). The results indicate that, firstly, the passive film of corrosion-resistant steel rebar shows n-type semiconducting behaviour with shallow and deep donor states in the band gap during passivation, and the deep donor energy level of corrosion-resistant steel rebar passive film is not sensitive to the decreasing pH value; secondly, under the same conditions, the passive film of corrosion-resistant rebars has a larger negative flat-band potential and thicker space charge layer than hot-ribbed rebars; thirdly, n-type semi-conductivity at a higher potential disappears once the chloride concentration at the rebar surface attains the chloride threshold value; and finally, a reverse charge layer forms on the surface of CR rebar at 0.50 V potential.

Abstract:A new cover cracking model is proposed for rebar corrosion. Rebar corrosion involves rust, which contributes to an expansive radial pressure at the concrete-steel interface and hoop tensile stresses in the surrounding concrete. Once the stress state exceeds a certain limit, anisotropic damage occurs. First, we establish an anisotropic damage model for concrete, which fully reflects the unilateral effect. Then an analytical model is proposed to calculate the displacement and the stress in a corroded reinforced concrete (RC) structural member based on that anisotropic damage. In this study, a concrete-rust-steel composite model is considered as a circular cylindrical concrete cover and a coaxial, uniformly-corroded, steel rebar, where the steel rebar and the mechanical properties of rust can be fully taken into account. At the same time, the influences of the steel-concrete interface pores and the cracks in concrete on the rust expansion pressure value are modeled. Finally, some experiments are made for comparison with the analytical results and good agreement indicated the proposed model could be used to predict both the variation of strain fields in structures during the corrosion process and the cover cracking time.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation into the corrosion of reinforcing steel bars corroded in two different environments. Reinforcing steel bars of different diameters in four different grades were corroded using two accelerated corrosion methods; one was to simulate the corrosion induced by carbonation and the other was to simulate chloride aggression. The corrosion patterns and rust characteristics of the corroded steel bars were examined and compared with those observed in real reinforced concrete structures. Tensile tests were also carried out on the corroded reinforcing steel bars. The mechanical performance characteristics (yield strength, ultimate strength, yield ratio, elongation, etc.) were examined. Based on the experimental results, a time-dependent assessment method for the mechanical behaviour of corroded reinforcing steel bars in multi-environments is proposed.
Passivation performance of Nb microalloyed rebar in concrete carbonation environments with different pH

Abstract:In this study, XPS sputtering depth, SEM and electrochemical tests (CV, EIS, M-S, i-t, DPP) were used to study the structural composition and formation mechanism of surface passive film of Nb microalloyed rebar in SCPS with different pH. The results showed that after passivation for 10 d in SCPS with different pH, compared with CS rebar, the stability and compactness of surface passive film of 34Nb rebar gradually increased with the decreases of pH. Firstly, with the decreases of pH, the outer layer of surface passive film of 34Nb rebar was composed of Fe oxides and Fe hydroxides, and the inner layer was composed of Fe oxides and Nb oxides, thus increasing the mass ratio of Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ and Nb 2 O 5 /(NbO 2 + NbO). Secondly, with the decreases of pH, the addition of Nb promoted the formation of Fe oxides in 34Nb rebar, obtaining the excellent R ct , E corr and E p . Finally, with the decreases of pH, the addition of Nb promoted the enrichment of Nb oxides in 34Nb rebar, inhibiting the degradation of Fe oxides, and the passive film exhibited the P-N type semiconductor, thus significantly decreasing the carrier density and enhancing the passivation rate of 34Nb rebar.

Abstract:Coated reinforcements are expected to improve the performance of reinforced concrete in aggressive environments, but different kinds of coated reinforcements can express a variety of properties, which can confuse researchers and engineers. This paper reviews the manufacture, corrosion mechanisms, behaviors, and applications of popular or promising coated reinforcements, incorporating galvanized reinforcements (GRs), epoxy coated reinforcements (ECRs), stainless cladding reinforcements (SCRs), and steel-fiber reinforced polymer composite bars (SFCBs). In terms of manufacture, GRs and ECRs should focus on minimizing the negative effect of manufacture on performance, while SCRs and SFCBs should reduce the cost and increase the production capacity. Behaviors of GRs and ECRs are primarily determined by the steel substrate, but the behaviors of SCRs and SFCBs are primarily affected by the coat and core, and their interaction. The corrosion mechanism of GRs and SCRs is about oxidation, while that of SFCBs is about hydrolysis. ECRs are usually corroded under film, which can be a cause of premature failure. Corrosion embrittles SCRs, as well as bare bars, but corrosion of SFCBs usually causes a reduction in maximum strength. The investigation of the corrosion behaviors of GRs and ECRs focuses on bond strength. GRs have controversial performance. ECRs have been proven to have drawbacks regarding bond strength. The use of anti-corrosion reinforcement is uneven in regions, which may correlate with the development of technology and the economy.

Abstract:Based on the electrochemical mechanism of steel corrosion, an improved electrochemical model was established to numerically simulate the corrosion of reinforcement in concrete under marine environment. The corrosion potential distribution and current density of corroded reinforcement were deduced from the corresponding micro-environments on the surface of steel bar, including oxygen, chloride ions, temperature and relative humidity. The equilibrium of gaseous oxygen and dissolved oxygen in pore solution was considered in the model. And the diffusion of invasion mediums in cement matrix and interfacial transition zone (ITZ) were also taken into account. The anode and cathode areas on the surface of steel bar was determined by the time-varying distribution of chloride ions rather than a fixed ratio to achieve the self-balance between macrocell and microcell corrosion. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data. The numerical analysis indicates that the growth of environmental chloride ions concentration will enhance the non-uniformity of chloride ions distribution, but does not contribute much to the increase of maximum rust layer thickness on steel surface. In the propagation stage of corrosion, oxygen concentration is a key factor in controlling corrosion reactions compared to chloride ions. Moreover, environment temperature has a positive effect on both the range of active areas on surface of steel rebar and rust layer thickness.
