Abstract:The safe and economical operation of any nuclear power system relies, to a great extent, on the success of the fuel and the materials of construction (Allen et al., 2010). Distinct from conventional power generation methods, a nuclear reactor is characterized by a harsh level of irradiation, very high operating temperature, and extremely corrosive environments. The behavior of fuels and materials as well as systems for fission reactors is thus complex due to the changes that the extreme environments generate on them. These kinds of changes may be seldom seen in other engineering disciplines, but this poses demanding requirements over reactor fuels, materials and systems. The design of reactor fuels, materials and systems subject to extreme environments is a major obstacle to enhancing reactor safety and economic performance of nuclear power systems. It is also essential in increasing innovation for current reactor operation improvement and future reactor design optimization. To address the challenges related to extreme reactor environments, the team of editors organizes the Research Topic "Reactor Fuels, Materials and Systems under Extreme Environments" in the journal Frontiers in Energy Research. Finally, 28 articles are collected, covering the theoretical, numerical and experimental studies on reactor fuels, materials and systems under extreme environments.

Abstract:Generation-IV reactor design concepts envisioned thus far cater to a common goal of providing safer, longer lasting, proliferation-resistant, and economically viable nuclear power plants. The foremost consideration in the successful development and deployment of Gen-W reactor systems is the performance and reliability issues involving structural materials for both in-core and out-of-core applications. The structural materials need to endure much higher temperatures, higher neutron doses, and extremely corrosive environments, which are beyond the experience of the current nuclear power plants. Materials under active consideration for use in different reactor components include various ferritic/martensitic steels, austenitic stainless steels, nickel-base superalloys, ceramics, composites, etc. This article addresses the material requirements for these advanced fission reactor types, specifically addressing structural materials issues depending on the specific application areas.

Abstract:The grand challenge of "net-zero carbon" emission calls for technological breakthroughs in energy production. The traveling wave reactor (TWR) is designed to provide economical and safe nuclear power and solve imminent problems, including limited uranium resources and radiotoxicity burdens from back-end fuel reprocessing/disposal. However, qualification of fuels and materials for TWR remains challenging and it sets an "end of the road" mark on the route of R&D of this technology. In this article, a novel approach is proposed to maneuver reactor operations and utilize high-temperature transients to mitigate the challenges raised by envisioned TWR service environment. Annular U-50Zr fuel and oxidation dispersion strengthened (ODS) steels are proposed to be used instead of the current U-10Zr and HT-9 ferritic/martensitic steels. In addition, irradiation-accelerated transport of Mn and Cr to the cladding surface to form a protective oxide layer as a self-repairing mechanism was discovered and is believed capable of mitigating long-term corrosion. This work represents an attempt to disruptively overcome current technological limits in the TWR fuels. After the Fukushima accident in 2011, the entire nuclear industry calls for a major technological breakthrough that addresses the following three fundamental issues: (1) Reducing spent nuclear fuel reprocessing demands, (2) reducing the probability of a severe accident, and (3) reducing the energy production cost per kilowatt-hour. An inherently safe and ultralong life fast neutron reactor fuel form can be such one stone that kills the three birds. In light of the recent development findings on U-50Zr fuels, we hereby propose a disruptive, conceptual metallic fuel design that can serve the following purposes at the same time: (1) Reaching ultrahigh burnup of above 40% FIMA, (2) possessing strong inherent safety features, and (3) extending current limits on fast neutron irradiation dose to be far beyond 200 dpa. We believe that this technology will be able to bring about revolutionary changes to the nuclear industry by significantly lowering the operational costs as well as improving the reactor system safety to a large extent.

Abstract:Fusion energy is a promising, safe, and reliable green energy solution to the increasing energy demand. However, there are several materials challenges that need to be overcome to increase the technical readiness to a level that enables a fusion pilot plant on the grid. This focus issue aims to identify and address a set of such key impediments for realizing deuterium-tritium (D–T) fusion power in a tokamak reactor and highlight the most recent progress on those research frontiers. The main emphasis of this collection is on materials development challenges resulting from helium irradiation, neutron-induced degradation, thermomechanical loading, and the corrosive environment faced by the divertor and first-wall materials, commonly known as plasma-facing components, and blanket systems for tokamak fusion reactors.

Abstract:Abstract The paper formulates the main problems associated with research on transmutation, which should be paid attention to by today’s young researchers. The processes of production of hazardous nuclides during transmutation in reactor facilities are considered. The goals of transmutation and the choice of nuclides to be transmuted are discussed. The concept of radiotoxicity is explained as a measure of the radiological hazard of radioactive nuclides, based on the maximum permissible concentration of nuclides according to the IAEA standards. The problem of the formation of secondary radioactive nuclides in nuclear fuel during generation of neutrons for transmutation is discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of various methods of transmutation in nuclear installations are considered: inclusion of transmutable nuclides in nuclear fuel in fast reactors, transmutation in specialized thermal and fast transmutation reactor installations and ADS systems. The problem of accumulation of highly radioactive actinides in a transmutation facility during long-term transmutation and the problem of a potential hazard of the transmutation facility itself are discussed. The unacceptability of application of common-type power reactors for the transmutation of long-lived fission products is demonstrated.

Abstract:Advanced manufacturing has the potential to revitalize US manufacturing, with valuable applications in several industries, including aerospace, automotive, and construction. Some of these applications have clear-cut objectives (e.g., maintain component performance while reducing mass). Applications of advanced manufacturing of nuclear components have aimed at recapturing lost manufacturing capabilities or addressing maintenance of legacy reactor components. Through the Department of Energy, Office of Nuclear Energy, Transformational Challenge Reactor design and analysis thrust, applications of advanced manufacturing, in particular, additive manufacturing, to core design has yielded reactor designs that are free from conventional manufacturing constraints. For applications in core design, the multiphysics nature of the key core metrics (e.g., peak temperature, peak power) in addition to transient safety performance requirements provides a more complex set of objectives that requires more advanced modeling and simulation tools. Additive manufacturing provides high dimensional control and design flexibility to produce complex coolant channel shapes for improved heat transfer properties and low peak material temperatures. Additional mechanisms for improved heat transfer characteristics and temperature-controlled feedback mechanisms have also been explored and incorporated into designs. While some of these enhancements are not directly beneficial for the current operating pressurized water reactor fleet, benefits may be realized in specific reactor applications that have a more constrained design space (e.g., mass, size, material type) or design metrics (e.g., fuel utilization).

Matter and Radiation at Extremes

Abstract:The interaction processes between the burning plasma and the first wall in a fusion reactor are diverse: the first wall will be exposed to extreme thermal loads of up to several tens of megawatts per square meter during quasistationary operation, combined with repeated intense thermal shocks (with energy densities of up to several megajoules per square meter and pulse durations on a millisecond time scale). In addition to these thermal loads, the wall will be subjected to bombardment by plasma ions and neutral particles (D, T, and He) and by energetic neutrons with energies up to 14 MeV. Hopefully, ITER will not only demonstrate that thermonuclear fusion of deuterium and tritium is feasible in magnetic confinement regimes; it will also act as a first test device for plasma-facing materials (PFMs) and plasma-facing components (PFCs) under realistic synergistic loading scenarios that cover all the above-mentioned load types. In the absence of an integrated test device, material tests are being performed primarily in specialized facilities that concentrate only on the most essential material properties. New multipurpose test facilities are now available that can also focus on more complex loading scenarios and thus help to minimize the risk of an unexpected material or component failure. Thermonuclear fusion—both with magnetic and with inertial confinement—is making great progress, and the goal of scientific break-even will be reached soon. However, to achieve that end, significant technical problems, particularly in the field of high-temperature and radiation-resistant materials, must be solved. With ITER, the first nuclear reactor that burns a deuterium–tritium plasma with a fusion power gain Q ≥ 10 will start operation in the next decade. To guarantee safe operation of this rather sophisticated fusion device, new PFMs and PFCs that are qualified to withstand the harsh environments in such a tokamak reactor have been developed and are now entering the manufacturing stage.

This article offers an overview of contemporary directions in high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel design worldwide, pinpointing the shared operational demands and development patterns characteristic of these advanced fuels. It presents an innovative advanced fuel design, which incorporates multi-layer coated particles to boost safety and employs high-temperature-resistant silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics, seamlessly integrated with cutting-edge additive manufacturing (AM) techniques. This design heralds a shift toward modular fuel element solutions that are easily scalable, supporting the diverse array of advanced reactors and marking a significant step forward in the quest for high-temperature gas-cooled reactor fuel technologies.

Abstract:The Nuclear Fission Technology (NFT) series of Virtual Special Issues (VSIs) for the Journal Nuclear Engineering and Design (J NED) was proposed in 2023, including the request to potential authors of manuscript to address the following questions: For how long will (water-cooling based) large size nuclear reactor survive? Will water-technology based SMRs displace large reactors? Will non-water-cooling technology SMRs and micro-reactors have an industrial deployment? Will breeding technology, including thorium exploitation, have due relevance? Will 'nuclear infrastructure' (fuel supply, financial framework, competence by regulators for new designs, waste management, etc.) remain or be sufficiently robust? Several dozen Guest Editors (GEs), i.e., the authors of the present document, managed the activity together with the Editor-in-Chief (EiC) of the journal. More than one thousand scientists contributed 470+ manuscripts, not evenly distributed among the geographical regions of the world and not necessarily addressing directly the bullet-questions, but certainly providing a view of current research being done. Key conclusions are as follows: (a) Large size reactors are necessary for a sustainable and safe exploitation of nuclear fission technology; (b) The burning of U-233 (from thorium) and Pu-239 (from uranium) is unavoidable, as well as recycling residual uranium currently part of waste; (c) Nuclear infrastructures in countries that currently use, or are entering the use of, fission energy for electricity production need a century planning; (d) The adoption of small reactors for commercial naval propulsion, hydrogen production and desalination is highly recommended.

Abstract:Nuclear power has been an important part of the US electricity system since the 1950s and continues to be a major source of low-carbon electricity today. Despite having low emissions, high grid reliability, and an excellent track record of safety, nuclear power also demands significant time and upfront capital to deploy, can struggle to compete economically with other generation sources, has intrinsic proliferation risk by relying on fissile material for fuel, and generates radioactive waste for which there are currently no disposal sites. Given the emissions and energy security benefits of having nuclear as part of the energy mix, advanced nuclear technologies have garnered significant interest and investment in recent years. Advanced reactor designs differ from the current operating fleet and have several potential advantages, including lower cost, faster construction, smaller size, inherent safety features, and lower waste yields. Yet, many challenges related to their deployment remain, and overcoming them will dictate whether or not new nuclear technologies become a material element of the future energy infrastructure. This article synthesizes the opportunities and barriers to deploying advanced nuclear reactors and their associated fuel cycles as described in two National Academies consensus reports. It highlights the consensus recommendations that could allow these new technologies to reach commercial success as part of a long-term decarbonization strategy.

Abstract:Key technologies for advanced nuclear systems encompass high temperature structural materials, fast neutron resistant core materials, and specific reactor and power conversion technologies (intermediate heat exchanger, turbo-machinery, high temperature electrolytic or thermo-chemical water splitting processes, etc.). The main requirements for the materials to be used in these reactor systems are dimensional stability under irradiation, whether under stress (irradiation creep or relaxation) or without stress (swelling, growth), an acceptable evolution under ageing of the mechanical properties (tensile strength, ductility, creep resistance, fracture toughness, resilience) and a good behavior in corrosive environments (reactor coolant or process fluid). Other criteria for the materials are their cost to fabricate and to assemble, and their composition could be optimized in order for instance to present low-activation (or rapid desactivation) features which facilitate maintenance and disposal. These requirements have to be met under normal operating conditions, as well as in incidental and accidental conditions. These challenging requirements imply that in most cases, the use of conventional nuclear materials is excluded, even after optimization and a new range of materials has to be developed and qualified for nuclear use. This paper gives a brief overview of various materials that are essential to establish advanced systems feasibility and performance for in pile and out of pile applications, such as ferritic/martensitic steels (9–12% Cr), nickel based alloys (Haynes 230, Inconel 617, etc.), oxide dispersion strengthened ferritic/martensitic steels, and ceramics (SiC, TiC, etc.). This article gives also an insight into the various natures of R&D needed on advanced materials, including fundamental research to investigate basic physical and chemical phenomena occurring in normal and accidental operating conditions, lab-scale tests to characterize candidate materials mechanical properties and corrosion resistance, as well as component mock-up tests on technology loops to validate potential applications while accounting for mechanical design rules and manufacturing processes. The selection, assessment and validation of materials necessitate a large number of experiments, involving rare and expensive facilities such as research reactors, hot laboratories or corrosion loops. The modelling and the codification of the behaviour of materials will always involve the use of such technological experiments, but it is of utmost importance to develop also a predictive material science. Finally, the paper stresses the benefit of prospects of multilateral collaboration to join skills and share efforts of R&D to achieve in the nuclear field breakthroughs on materials that have already been achieved over the past decades in other industry sectors (aeronautics, metallurgy, chemistry, etc.).

Abstract:Since a fast reactor core with uranium-plutonium fuel is not in its most reactive configuration under operating conditions, redistribution of the core materials (fuel, steel, sodium) during a core disruptive accident (CDA) may lead to recriticalities and as a consequence to severe nuclear power excursions. The prevention, or at least the mitigation, of core disruption is therefore of the utmost importance. In the current paper, we analyze an innovative fast reactor concept developed within the CP-ESFR European project, focusing on the phenomena affecting the initiation and the transition phases of an unprotected loss of flow (ULOF) accident. Key phenomena for the initiation phase are coolant boiling onset and further voiding of the core that lead to a reactivity increase in the case of a positive void reactivity effect. Therefore, the first level of optimization involves the reduction, by design, of the positive void effect in order to avoid entering a severe accident. If the core disruption cannot be avoided, the accident enters into the transition phase, characterized by the progression of core melting and recriticalities due to fuel compaction. Dedicated features that enhance and guarantee a sufficient and timely fuel discharge are considered for the optimization of this phase.
Considerations for Graphite in the Design, Qualification and Operation of Advanced Reactor Cores

Abstract:Graphite has been used historically in nuclear reactor cores for its excellent neutron moderation properties. However, the complex material behaviour inherent in irradiated graphite has resulted in several structural integrity challenges that has constrained the lifetime of the reactor core. Working towards understanding how graphite behaves in irradiated core conditions and its safety performance has allowed for the successful life extension of the UK Advanced Gas-cooled Reactors (AGR) fleet to operate beyond their original design limits. Some of the key challenges with graphite is that due to its polycrystalline nature, the material behaviour is complex which is compounded when considering the irradiated environment; where degradation changes the material behaviour, leading to differential shrinkage and significant tensile stresses. This in turn affects the structural performance and thermal hydraulics, all of which have a consequence to the safe operation of the reactor core. Therefore, serious consideration of graphite in the design of next generation reactors will not only primarily secure safety in the design but could also reduce cost and increase the return on investment. Here, we identify seven main considerations for graphite in the design, qualification and operation of advanced reactor cores that will not only aid in meeting design code requirements (specifically ASME III Division 5) and regulator conformance, but will also improve the commercial viability of future nuclear power.

Abstract:Plasma-facing materials and components in a fusion reactor are the interface between the plasma and the material part. The operational conditions in this environment are probably the most challenging parameters for any material: high power loads and large particle and neutron fluxes are simultaneously impinging at their surfaces. To realize fusion in a tokamak or stellarator reactor, given the proven geometries and technological solutions, requires an improvement of the thermo-mechanical capabilities of currently available materials. In its first part this article describes the requirements and needs for new, advanced materials for the plasma-facing components. Starting points are capabilities and limitations of tungsten-based alloys and structurally stabilized materials. Furthermore, material requirements from the fusion-specific loading scenarios of a divertor in a water-cooled configuration are described, defining directions for the material development. Finally, safety requirements for a fusion reactor with its specific accident scenarios and their potential environmental impact lead to the definition of inherently passive materials, avoiding release of radioactive material through intrinsic material properties. The second part of this article demonstrates current material development lines answering the fusion-specific requirements for high heat flux materials. New composite materials, in particular fiber-reinforced and laminated structures, as well as mechanically alloyed tungsten materials, allow the extension of the thermo-mechanical operation space towards regions of extreme steady-state and transient loads. Self-passivating tungsten alloys, demonstrating favorable tungsten-like plasma-wall interaction behavior under normal operation conditions, are an intrinsic solution to otherwise catastrophic consequences of loss-of-coolant and air ingress events in a fusion reactor. Permeation barrier layers avoid the escape of tritium into structural and cooling materials, thereby minimizing the release of tritium under normal operation conditions. Finally, solutions for the unique bonding requirements of dissimilar material used in a fusion reactor are demonstrated by describing the current status and prospects of functionally graded materials.

Abstract:The intricate balance between reactor economics and safety necessitates the emergence of new and advanced nuclear systems and, very importantly, advanced materials, which can overcome current shortcomings and bring about more economic nuclear systems with designed-in inherent safety features. These advances will achieve greater safety and better nuclear reactor economics by reaching longer reactor lives with higher levels neutron irradiation, and by providing higher operation temperatures and resistance to more aggressive corrosive environments. This paper provides a review of the current state of research and development on innovative nuclear fuel materials design and development which have the potential of benefiting simultaneously reactor economics and safety. Our discussion focuses on three areas of research: Accident-tolerant Fuels (ATFs), Oxidation Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) steels and High Entropy Alloys (HEAs). The paper also gives a prospective description of future research activities on these materials.

Abstract:Nuclear fusion can be one of the most attractive sources of energy from the viewpoint of safety and minimal environmental impact. Central in the goal of designing a safe, environmentally benign, and economically competitive fusion power system is the requirement for high performance, low activation materials. The general performance requirements for such materials have been defined and it is clear that materials developed for other applications (e.g. aerospace, nuclear fission, fossil energy systems) will not fully meet the needs of fusion. Advanced materials, with composition and microstructure tailored to yield properties that will satisfy the specific requirements of fusion must be developed. The international fusion programs have made significant progress towards this goal. Compositional requirements for low activation lead to a focus of development efforts on silicon carbide composites, vanadium alloys, and advanced martensitic steels as candidate structural material systems. Control of impurities will be critically important in actually achieving low activation but this appears possible. Neutron irradiation produces significant changes in the mechanical and physical properties of each of these material systems raising feasibility questions and design limitations. A focus of the research and development effort is to understand these effects, and through the development of specific compositions and microstructures, produce materials with improved and adequate performance. Other areas of research that are synergistic with the development of radiation resistant materials include fabrication, joining technology, chemical compatibility with coolants and tritium breeders and specific questions relating to the unique characteristics of a given material (e.g. coatings to reduce gas permeation in SiC composites) or design concept (e.g. electrical insulator coatings for liquid metal concepts).
