Abstract:It is now well established that electrochemical systems can optimally perform only within a narrow range of temperature. Exposure to temperatures outside this range adversely affects the performance and lifetime of these systems. As a result, thermal management is an essential consideration during the design and operation of electrochemical equipment and, can heavily influence the success of electrochemical energy technologies. Recently, significant attempts have been placed on the maturity of cooling technologies for electrochemical devices. Nonetheless, the existing reviews on the subject have been primarily focused on battery cooling. Conversely, heat transfer in other electrochemical systems commonly used for energy conversion and storage has not been subjected to critical reviews. To address this issue, the current study gives an overview of the progress and challenges on the thermal management of different electrochemical energy devices including fuel cells, electrolysers and supercapacitors. The physicochemical mechanisms of heat generation in these electrochemical devices are discussed in-depth. Physics of the heat transfer techniques, currently employed for temperature control, are then exposed and some directions for future studies are provided.

Abstract:In conclusion, the analysis and measurement of thermal properties are crucial for a wide range of applications in science, technology, and industry. For energy efficiency optimisation, the design of sophisticated materials, and the creation of cutting-edge technologies, it is essential to comprehend how heat is transmitted and handled within materials. Researchers can precisely evaluate thermal conductivity, heat capacity, and other thermal parameters using a variety of experimental methodologies, including both conventional and cutting-edge technologies. This enables accurate material characterisation and performance evaluation. The landscape of thermal management and energy conversion has been significantly shaped by nanostructured materials. Their distinct nanoscale characteristics provide chances to modify thermal behaviour, boost effectiveness, and add new features. Researchers are able to manage heat conduction, phonon behaviour, and charge transport through the use of designed nanostructures, which has led to breakthroughs in a variety of industries, including electronics, energy storage, thermoelectric devices, and more. In addition to promoting energy efficiency and waste heat recovery, these developments pave the path for sustainable solutions to the world's rising energy needs and environmental problems. We are on the verge of ground-breaking discoveries that have the potential to restructure industries, enhance energy sustainability, and pave the way for a more effective and linked society as we continue to investigate and harness the complex behaviour of heat within materials.

Abstract:Instead of getting involved in either extremes of dispute around climate change as one of our grand challenges, we opened the space of potential policy responses from a systemic view and showed why current climate change mitigation policies are not successful as planned. Further, as a potential futuristic scenario, neither a projection nor a prediction, that attracts further discussions, we showed how solar based energy systems are different than other current energy systems and how we can conceive of them as grand technologies which dissolve the whole landscape of energy management in the age of information.

Abstract:Nearly half of the global energy consumption goes toward the heating and cooling of buildings and processes. This quantity could be considerably reduced through the addition of advanced thermal energy storage systems. One emerging pathway for thermal energy storage is through nano-engineered phase change materials, which have very high energy densities and enable several degrees of design freedom in selecting their composition and morphology. Although the literature has indicated that these advanced materials provide a clear thermodynamic boost for thermal energy storage, they are subject to much more complex multiscale governing phenomena (e.g., non-uniform temperatures across the medium). This review highlights the most promising configurations that have been proposed for improved heat transfer along with the critical future needs in this field. We conclude that significant effort is still required to move up the technological readiness scale and to create commercially viable novel nano-engineered phase change systems.

Abstract:Thermal energy storage (TES) is increasingly important due to the demand-supply challenge caused by the intermittency of renewable energy and waste heat dissipation to the environment. This paper discusses the fundamentals and novel applications of TES materials and identifies appropriate TES materials for particular applications. The selection and ranking of suitable materials are discussed through multi-criteria decision making (MCDM) techniques considering chemical, technical, economic and thermal performance. The recent advancements in TES materials, including their development, performance and applications are discussed in detail. Such materials show enhanced thermal conductivity, reduced supercooling, and the advantage of having multiple phase change temperatures (cascade PCMs). Nano-enhanced PCMs have found the thermal conductivity enhancement of up to 32% but the latent heat is also reduced by up to 32%. MXene is a recently developed 2D nanomaterial with enhanced electrochemical properties showing thermal conductivity and efficiency up to 16% and 94% respectively. Shape-stabilized PCMs are able to enhance the heat transfer rate several times (3–10 times) and are found to be best suited for solar collector and PV-based heat recovery systems. Cascade and molten slats PCMs find their best applications in the thermal management of buildings and the power sector (concentrated solar plants). Microencapsulated, nanoPCMs and shape-stabilized PCMs effectively reduce the supercooling of hydrated salts. The recent trends of TES materials in various applications, including building, industrial, power, food storage, smart textiles, thermal management, and desalination are also briefly discussed. Finally, future research in advanced energy storage materials is also addressed in this study, which is intended to help create new insights that will revolutionize the thermal management field.

Abstract:More than 90% of anthropogenic carbon emissions are from uses of organic carbon resources and carbonate minerals that cannot be abandoned any time soon. In this context, we have realized that the most effective strategy to cope with carbon-neutral challenges is to focus on a few super-emitters, which are all associated with heat-induced or heat-driven thermochemical reactions. To assist in reducing CO2 emissions from these super-emitters, we introduce an emerging interdisciplinary Engineering Thermochemistry (ETC) that focuses on heat-induced/driven thermochemical reactions and their engineering. Combined with some exemplary processes, we demonstrate how and why ETC can play a vital role in innovating CO2 super-emitting processes to reduce energy consumption and carbon emissions substantially at the scale of several billion tons. The approaches discussed in this study can help governments and researchers to establish applicable policies and develop practical techniques to meet the challenges of CO2 emission reductions toward a green and carbon-neutral future.

Abstract:The last decade created tremendous advances in new and unique thermoelectric generation materials, devices, fabrication techniques, and technologies via various global research and development. This article seeks to elucidate and highlight some of these advances to lay foundations for future research work and advances. New advanced methods and demonstrations in TE device and material measurement, materials fabrication and composition advances, and device design and fabrication will be discussed. Other articles in this Special Issue present additional new research into materials fabrication and composition advances, including multi-dimensional additive manufacturing and advanced silicon germanium technologies. This article will discuss the most recent results and findings in thermoelectric system economics, including highlighting and quantifying the interrelationships between thermoelectric (TE) material costs, TE manufacturing costs and most importantly, often times dominating, the heat exchanger costs in overall TE system costs. We now have a methodology for quantifying the competing TE system cost-performance effects and impacts. Recent findings show that heat exchanger costs usually dominate overall TE system cost-performance tradeoffs, and it is extremely difficult to escape this condition in TE system design. In regard to material performance, novel or improved enhancement principles are being effectively implemented. Furthermore, in addition to further advancements in properties and module developments of relatively established champion materials such as skutterudites, several high performance ZT ≈≥ 2 new material systems such as GeTe, Mg3(Sb,Bi)2 have also been relatively recently unearthed and module applications also being considered. These recent advancements will also be covered in this review.

Abstract:Phase change material based thermal energy storage has many current and potential applications in the heating and cooling of buildings, battery and electronics thermal management, thermal textiles, and dry cooling of power plants. However, connecting lab scale thermal data obtained on DSC to the performance of large-scale practical systems has been a major challenge primarily due to the dependence of supercooling on the size and temperature gradient of the system. In this work we show how a phase change material's supercooling behavior can be characterized experimentally using common lab scale thermal analysis techniques. We then develop a statistics based theoretical model that uses the lab scale data on small samples to quantitatively predict the supercooling performance for a general thermal energy storage application of any size with temperature gradients. Finally, we validate the modeling methodology by comparing to experimental results for solid-solid phase change in neopentyl glycol, which shows how the model successfully predicts the changes in supercooling temperature across a large range of cooling rates (2 orders of magnitude) and volumes (3 orders of magnitude). By accounting for thermal gradients, the model avoids ~2x error incurred by lumped approximations.

Heat transfer analyses are essential for system design and optimisation. This article reviews the progress, challenges and opportunities in heat transfer research as applied to high-temperature solar thermal and thermochemical energy systems. The topics discussed include fundamentals of concentrated solar energy collection, convective heat transfer in solar receivers, application of liquid metals as heat transfer media, and heat transfer in non-reacting and reacting two-phase solid-gas systems such as particle-gas flows and gas-saturated porous structures.
