Abstract:We are investigating a possible microwave amplifier with low noise and low power consumption at cryogenic temperature for large scale multi-pixel heterodyne superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) receivers at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. We propose the use of SIS junctions as amplifier elements based on quasi-particle mixing. By connecting an SIS up-converter and an SIS down-converter in series with gain in both converters, a low-noise and low-power-consumption high-frequency amplifier can be obtained in principle. A proof-of-concept study has been made by configuring an amplifier with two Nb/Al-AlOx/Nb mixers in the 150-GHz band in a standard noise and gain measurement setup at 4 K with a microwave noise source as an input signal. We observed a maximum gain of more than 10 dB and a minimum noise temperature of less than 10 K, which suggests that our proposed SIS amplifier is capable for multi-pixel SIS receivers. On the other hand, we also observed a periodical behavior in frequency dependence of the measured noise temperature and gain due to a standing-wave effect between the two SIS mixers, which is a problem to be solved.

Abstract:The low-noise performance of a waveguide SIS mixer with NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions and an NbN/MgO/NbTiN tuning circuit on an MgO substrate was demonstrated at frequencies above the gap frequency of Nb. To design the mixer, the complex refractive index of the MgO substrate was measured by using a THz time-domain spectrometer. The superconductive properties of NbTiN films on MgO were examined in detail. An uncorrected receiver noise temperature of 262 K (DSB) at 820 GHz was achieved in an IF bandwidth of 4-12 GHz at a bath temperature of 4.2 K. By comparing the measured and calculated conversion gains, the loss in the NbN/MgO/NbTiN tuning circuit was estimated to be 0.98 dB at 810 GHz.

Abstract:This paper describes a low-noise microwave amplifier based on up- and down-frequency-conversion processes in quasiparticle superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) tunnel junctions. The SIS amplifier was configured with two SIS frequency-converter modules and a cryogenic millimeter-wave isolator inserted between them. Moreover, a local oscillator (LO) using millimeter-wave attenuators and a phase shifter was considered. This setup allowed the control of individual LO power and differential phase in these SIS frequency converters to optimize the amplifier performance. The SIS amplifier showed noise temperatures as low as 11 K and a 6–8 dB gain from nearly DC to 5 GHz. The attained microwave performance is promising for obtaining large-format arrays, such as multibeam heterodyne receivers. Moreover, this two-frequency-converter concept based on SIS junctions might enable microwave applications, such as wideband non-reciprocal circuits in isolators, gyrators, and circulators, which are essential devices in the quantum computing and radio astronomy fields.

Abstract:We have successfully demonstrated a low-noise 0.78–0.95-THz waveguide mixer based on Nb/AlOx/Nb superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) junctions integrated with an NbTiN/SiO2/Al superconducting inverted microstrip. The mixer employs a twin-junction tuning circuit and an impedance transformer which are designed to achieve both low noise and wideband operation. Corrected for optical input losses in front of the mixer, the double-sideband (DSB) noise temperature is below 120 K (<3 hf/kB) around the local oscillator (LO) frequency of 0.88 THz and at an operating temperature of 2 K. The results represent state-of-the-art performance for mixers in the terahertz frequency range.

Abstract:SUMMARY This paper describes the development of superconductor– insulator–superconductor (SIS) mixers for the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) from the device point of view. During the construction phase of ALMA, the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) successfully fabricated SIS mixers to meet the stringent ALMA noise temperature requirements of less than 230 K (5 times the quantum noise) for Band 10 (787–950 GHz) in collaboration with the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology. Band 10 covers the highest frequency band of ALMA and is recognized as the most difficult band in terms of superconducting technology. After the construction, the NAOJ began development studies for ALMA enhancement such as wideband and multibeam SIS mixers according to top-level science requirements, which are also presented. words:

Abstract:We present the design and preliminary experimental results of superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers for Atacama large millimeter array (ALMA) band 10 (780-950GHz) receivers. To achieve wide frequency coverage as well as low noise temperature, we integrated high current density (10 kA/cm2) and small-sized (one micrometer in diameter) Nb/AlOx/Nb SIS junctions with a tuning microstrip line using NbTiN ground plane and Al wiring layers. High quality NbTiN films with Tc reaching 14.5 K and Al films with residual resistivity ratio as large as 15 have been achieved. To minimize the waveguide transmission loss and facilitate the fabrication of mixer block, a full height waveguide was adopted. The waveguide probe was optimized to achieve low input impedance in the frequency range of 780-950 GHz while adopting a backshort cavity of zero depth. Preliminary RF testing with a Nb/Al microstrip tuning circuit demonstrated a DSB receiver noise temperature about 400 K at 832.5 GHz, which promises the accommodation of receiver performance in ALMA specification with low loss NbTiN/Al microstrip lines.

Abstract:In this paper we present the development of low-noisewaveguide mixers with NbN/AlN/NbN tunnel junctions atfrequency approaching 1THz. The mixer was designed to becompatible with MgO substrate. Mixers of such a designdemonstrated much improved receiver sensitivity. Theimprovement is a result of reduction of signal dissipation inwaveguide and leakage into IF port by adopting a full-heightwaveguide and an effective RF choke filter respectively. Twotypes of tuning circuit, namely parallel-connected twin-junction(PCTJ) and half-wavelength self-resonance distributed junction(DJ), are designed and evaluated. Both theoretical andmeasurement results show that the PCTJ design is superior interms of gain and sensitivity due to smaller loss in the tuningcircuit.

Abstract:At present, microwave transmission lines are characterized by a strong frequency dependence of loss in the subterahertz range. This work is aimed at development, research, and optimization of superconducting integrated circuits designed for matching the impedances of a long Josephson junction oscillator (a so-called "flux-flow oscillator") and a superconductor–insulator–superconductor (SIS) detector in the subterahertz frequency range. The goal of this study is to improve and approve the numerical calculation methods, which make it possible to describe correctly experimental superconducting structures in a wide frequency range. Numerical calculations of integrated circuits have been performed in order to optimize the topology and parameters of transmission lines. The main parameters of the transmission lines and their influence on the signal propagation are determined. The results of optimization of integrated matching circuits in the range of 450–700 GHz have been experimentally confirmed. Optimization and improvement of transmission lines allow one to design new-generation integrated superconducting detectors and investigate tunnel SIS junctions more thoroughly (including shunted ones) and the properties of heterodyne oscillators based on long Josephson junctions.

Abstract:We have fabricated prototype superconductor integrated circuits (ICs), which accommodate planar orthomode transducer (OMT) and balanced superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers operating at D-band (125-163 GHz). The fabrication of the ICs is different from the conventional SIS mixer fabrication process in several aspects because of new features and components being introduced and incorporated. In particular, very flat silicon membranes that mechanically support the planar OMT and the waveguide probes for local oscillator coupling were formed with a combination of dry and wet etching methods to completely remove the handle layer and the buried oxide layer of the silicon on insulator substrates. We also applied an anodization passivation of the surface of the ground plane and a via-hole etching process with an i-line stepper in the formation of low-leakage SIS junctions. The SIS junctions of moderately good quality have been fabricated with an average quality factor as high as 18, which indicate the integrity of the junction definition with the complex fabrication of ICs.

Abstract:We have designed, fabricated, and tested terahertz waveguide superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers with Nb/AlOx/Nb junctions and NbN/SiO2/Al microstriplines. The NbN ground plane used was an epitaxial film grown on a single-crystal MgO substrate. A two-junction tuning circuit, which was directly placed at the feed point of a bow-tie waveguide probe without impedance transformers, was used. A full-height waveguide, hammer-type choke filter, and zero-depth backshort were adopted for the design of the microstrip-waveguide transition structure. The Nb junctions in which the current density was 6.5 kA/cm2 showed good I-V characteristics, yielding a subgap-to-normal-state resistance ratio greater than 20. The results obtained for the mixer performance showed a receiver noise temperature of 440 K (DSB) at 1 THz; the results were corrected for losses in the beam splitter and the vacuum window. A detailed analysis of the mixers suggested that the waveguide mixers composed of epitaxial NbN films and Nb junctions were effective in the terahertz band.
A Novel Mm-Wave SIS Mixer Comprising Series-Connected Junction Array and On-Chip Bias-T

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce a novel Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixer circuitry based on a series-connected junction (SJ) array. Unlike existing SJ designs, in which each junction is biased at the same DC current. This new design enables each junction to be DC-biased at the same voltage via a set of on-chip bias-T's. Thanks to this parallel DC biasing solution, this circuit design supports a so-called series-connected distributed junction (SDJ) array design, in which LO power non-uniformly spreads along the junction array both in amplitude and in phase. Using this SDJ array, we can realize mm-wave SIS mixers with octave RF band, 15 GHz-wide IF band and high dynamic range required for radio astronomical observation. Simulations of an 80-160GHz SIS mixer design have been made based on this design to support our arguments.

Abstract:We report on the design and experimental results of a fix-tuned Superconductor-Insulator-Superconductor (SIS) mixer for Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) band 8 (385-500 GHz) receivers. Nb-based SIS junctions of a current density of 10 kA/cm(2) and one micrometer size (fabricated with a two-step lift-off process) are employed to accomplish the ALMA receiver specification, which requires wide frequency coverage as well as low noise temperature. A parallel-connected twin-junction (PCTJ) is designed to resonate at the band center to tune out the junction geometric capacitance. A waveguide-microstrip probe is optimized to have nearly frequency-independent impedance at the probe's feed point, thereby making it easy to match the low-impedance PCTJ over a wide frequency band. The RF embedding impedance is retrieved by fitting the measured pumped I-V curves to confirm good matching between PCTJ and signal source. We demonstrate here a minimum double-sideband receiver noise temperature of 3 times of quantum limits for an intermediate-frequency range of 4-8 GHz. The mixers were measured in band 8 cartridge with a sideband separation scheme. Single-sideband receiver noise below ALMA specification was achieved over the whole band.

Abstract:We have recently developed a high-temperature superconducting (HTS) Josephson self-pumped mixer with an on-chip heterodyne local oscillator. The device is based on HTS step-edge junction technology and a “resistive-superconducting quantum interference device” (RSQUID) configuration. The heterodyne local oscillator and mixer output are frequency-tunable from below 10 MHz to 5 GHz by a control current. The performance of the autonomous Josephson mixer–local oscillator has been experimentally evaluated in terms of the current-voltage characteristics, intermediate frequency (IF)-tunable bandwidth, operation range, linearity, bias current, and temperature dependence of the IF output (or mixer conversion efficiency). We find the results are in good overall agreement with numerical simulation.

Abstract:A dual-polarization balanced superconductor-insulator-superconductor mixer operating at 2 mm wavelength is realized in form of a monolithic planar integrated circuit. Planar orthomode transducers and LO couplers are enabled by using silicon membranes that are locally formed on the silicon-on-insulator substrate. The performance of the balanced mixer is experimentally investigated. Over the entire RF band (125-163 GHz), the balanced mixer shows an LO noise rejection ratio about 15 dB, an overall receiver noise about 40 K, and a cross-polarization <-20 dB. The demonstrated compactness and the performance of the integrated circuit indicate that this approach is feasible in developing heterodyne focal plane arrays.

Abstract:We designed and fabricated superconducting monolithic microwave integrated circuits (MMICs) at 2 mm wavelengths. Balanced superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers and silicon membrane-based planar orthomode transducers are incorporated into the MMICs, which is used to develop compact heterodyne array receivers for radio astronomical observations. Because of substrate cavity modes, crosstalk between the outputs of balanced mixers was observed at intermediate frequencies, which deteriorated the noise rejection ratio. Three-dimensional electromagnetic simulation proved that the cavity modes can be effectively suppressed by introducing conducting through-substrate vias (TSVs). We have been developing a TSV fabrication process compatible with that for the superconducting MMICs containing silicon membranes by using non-Bosch deep silicon etching and using sputtered Nb films. The fabricated TSVs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and R – T measurement.

Abstract:Based on YBa2Cu3O7 Josephson junction mounted on a pulse tube cryocooler, a compact superconducting harmonic mixer is used to phase-lock a microwave source at 3 mm waveband to a reference of high precision at much lower frequency, thus greatly improving the performances of the former. Currently the highest harmonic number at which phase locking can be realized is 60. The experimental system, main results, and the problem of how to increase the harmonic number are discussed in details.

Abstract:A 600-700GHz SIS mixer with the twin-junction tuning circuit has been designed and fabricated [1] The surface impedance of thin-film superconducting microstrip lines, based on Mattis-Bardeen theory [2], is included in the optimization of RF impedance matching. The receiver noise temperature measured in the frequency range of 630-660GHz is below 200K and the lowest receiver noise temperature of 181K is achieved at 656GHz. The FTS response of the SIS mixer shows a good RF coupling from 600GHz to 700GHz. Both the noise performance and the FTS response can be quantitatively described by numerical results using the quantum theory of mixing. Some detail considerations on the mixer model calculation, such as spreading inductance around the junction tuning structure and mixer's embedding impedance, are discussed. Introduction Nb-based superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers have been used very successfully in sub-mm wavelength detection. Their receiver noise temperature has reached to three times the quantum limit, —3 hfrkB, below the junction's gap frequency. However, at high frequency bands, Nb SIS mixers need to be designed carefully because the photon energy is close to or higher than the gap energy of Nb, A-1.4meV. When the frequency band covers the gap frequency of Nb, —670GHz, the RF loss of Nb superconducting transmission lines increases dramatically and the surface impedance has strong frequency dependence. Usually, the RF properties of a superconducting transmission line can be described by the Mattis-Bardeen theory [2] in good accuracy. From results reported so far [4-9], the best receiver noise temperature is close to 5 hi7kB in the band of 600-700GHz. Despite of the input loss contributed by the experimental setup, some other properties of SIS mixers should be taken into account. In this paper, we characterize the performance of a 600-700GHz mixer by comparing the experimental and simulated results.
Development of a Low-power Consumption Cryogenic MMIC LNA for Immediate Connection with an SIS Mixer

Abstract:We have been developing a 3-5 GHz, low-power consumption, and cryogenic low noise amplifier based on GaAs monolithic integrated circuit for multibeam radiometry applications. The low thermal dissipation also allows the MMIC LNAs being directly connected to superconductor-insulator-superconductor (SIS) mixers, which results in much improved compactness of the receiver frontend. The power consumption of the MMIC LNA, which is as low as 1.25 mW at ambient temperature of 4 K, is achieved by means of compromising the power consumption and the noise performance based on a cryogenic transistor model. A mixer enclosure is designed for direct connection between the SIS mixer and the LNA and the performance of the SIS/LNA combination is measured at 3 mm wavelength. Stable operation has been verified with reasonable receiver noise temperature.

Abstract:Heterodyne mixing performance of a waveguide SIS mixer with inhomogeneous distributed junction (DJ) array composed of 3 SIS junctions is experimentally investigated at 375-500 GHz. Quantum-limited noise temperature of 3-DJ mixer is demonstrated. Besides its low noise temperature, the mixer conversion gain of 3-DJ mixer is found to be more uniform over RF band than that of a PCTJ (parallel-connected twin junctions) mixer. The FTS (Fourier transform spectrum) response indicates a broad RF bandwidth of the 3-DJ mixer that is limited by the bandwidth of waveguide probe instead of mixer's tuning circuit.
