Abstract: We prove the finite step termination of bubble trees for singularity formation of polarized K\"ahler-Einstein metrics in the non-collapsing situation. We also raise several questions and conjectures in connection with algebraic geometry and Riemannian geometry.

Abstract:We give an algebro-geometric or non-archimedean framework to study bubbling phenomena of Kahler metrics with Euclidean volume growth, after [DS17, Sun23, dBS23]. In particular, for any degenerating family to log terminal singularity, we algebraically construct a finite sequence of birational modifications of the family with milder degenerations, and compare with analytic bubbling constructions in loc.cit. We also provide approaches in terms of coordinates and valuations. Our discussion partially depends on the general framework of stability theory in our [Od24b] (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.02489" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.02489">arXiv:2406.02489</a>) after [HL14, AHLH23].

Abstract:We discover a “no semistability at infinity” phenomenon for complete Calabi-Yau metrics asymptotic to cones, which is proved by eliminating the possible appearance of an intermediate K-semistable cone in the 2-step degeneration theory developed by Donaldson and the first author. It is in sharp contrast to the setting of local singularities of Kähler-Einstein metrics. A byproduct of the proof is a polynomial convergence rate to the asymptotic cone for such manifolds, which bridges the gap between the general theory of Colding-Minicozzi and the classification results of Conlon-Hein.

Abstract:We exhibit families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on K3 surfaces which collapse to an interval, with Tian-Yau and Taub-NUT metrics occurring as bubbles. There is a corresponding continuous surjective map from the K3 surface to the interval, with regular fibers diffeomorphic to either 3-tori or Heisenberg nilmanifolds.

Abstract: We investigate the collapsing geometry of hyperk\"ahler 4-manifolds. As applications we prove two well-known conjectures in the field. (1) Any collapsed limit of unit-diameter hyperk\"ahler metrics on the K3 manifold is isometric to one of the following: the quotient of a flat 3-torus by an involution, a singular special K\"ahler metric on the 2-sphere, or the unit interval. (2) Any complete hyperk\"ahler 4-manifold with finite energy (i.e., gravitational instanton) is asymptotic to a model end at infinity.

Abstract:We prove the existence of Kahler-Einstein metric on a K-stable Fano manifold using the recent compactness result on Kahler-Ricci flows. The key ingredient is an algebro-geometric description of the asymptotic behavior of Kahler-Ricci flow on Fano manifolds. This is in turn based on a general finite dimensional discussion, which is interesting in its own and could potentially apply to other problems. As one application, we relate the asymptotics of the Calabi flow on a polarized Kahler manifold to K-stability assuming bounds on geometry.

Abstract:We give an example of a family of smooth complex algebraic surfaces of degree $6$ in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ developing an isolated elliptic singularity. We show via a gluing construction that the unique Kähler-Einstein metrics of Ricci curvature $-1$ on these sextics develop a complex hyperbolic cusp in the limit, and that near the tip of the forming cusp a Tian-Yau gravitational instanton bubbles off.

Abstract:We prove that constant scalar curvature K\"ahler metric "adjacent" to a fixed K\"ahler class is unique up to isomorphism. This extends the uniqueness theorem of Donaldson and Chen-Tian, and formally fits into the infinite dimensional G.I.T picture described by Donaldson. We prove that the Calabi flow near a cscK metric exists globally and converges uniformly to a cscK metric in a polynomial rate. Viewed in a K\"ahler class, the Calabi flow is also shown to be asymptotic to a smooth geodesic ray at infinity. This latter fact is also interesting in the finite dimensional analogue, where we show that the downward gradient flow of the Kempf-Ness function in a semi-stable orbit is asymptotic to the direction of optimal degeneration.

Abstract:We analyze the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics of positive curvature in the neighborhood of a germ of a log terminal singularity $(X,p)$. This boils down to solve a Dirichlet problem for certain complex Monge-Ampère equations. We show that the solvability of the latter is independent of the shape of the domain and of the boundary data. We establish a Moser-Trudinger $(MT)_{\gamma}$ inequality in subcritical regimes $\gamma<\gamma_p$ and establish the existence of smooth solutions in that cases. We show that the expected critical exponent $\hat{\gamma}_p=\frac{n+1}{n} \widehat{\mathrm{vol}}(X,p)^{1/n}$ can be expressed in terms of the normalized volume, an important algebraic invariant of the singularity.

Abstract:Let $(Z,p)$ be a pointed Gromov-Hausdorff limit of non-collapsing Kähler-Einstein metrics with uniformly bounded Ricci curvature. We show that the singular Kähler-Einstein metric on $Z$ is conical at $p$ if and only if $\mathcal C=W$ in Donaldson-Sun's two-step degeneration theory, assuming curvature grows at most quadratically near $p$. Let $(X,p)$ be a germ of an isolated log terminal algebraic singularity. Following Hein-Sun's approach, we show that if $\mathcal C=W$ in the two-step stable degeneration of $(X,p)$ and $\mathcal C$ has a smooth link, then every singular Kähler-Einstein metric on $X$ with non-positive Ricci curvature and bounded potential is conical at $p$.

Complex structure degenerations and collapsing of Calabi-Yau metrics

Abstract:In this paper, we make progress on understanding the collapsing behavior of Calabi-Yau metrics on a degenerating family of polarized Calabi-Yau manifolds. In the case of a family of smooth Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces in projective space degenerating into the transversal union of two smooth Fano hypersurfaces in a generic way, we obtain a complete result in all dimensions establishing explicit and precise relationships between the metric collapsing and complex structure degenerations. This result is new even in complex dimension two. This is achieved via gluing and singular perturbation techniques, and a key geometric ingredient involving the construction of certain (not necessarily smooth) Kähler metrics with torus symmetry. We also discuss possible extensions of this result to more general settings.

Abstract:These are the notes for lectures given at the Sanya winter school in complex analysis and geometry in January 2016. In Sec. 1, we review the meaning of Ricci curvature of Kähler metrics and introduce the problem of finding Kähler–Einstein metrics. In Sec. 2, we describe the formal picture that leads to the notion of K-stability of Fano manifolds, which is an algebro-geometric criterion for the existence of a Kähler–Einstein metric, by the recent result of Chen–Donaldson–Sun. In Sec. 3, we discuss algebraic structure on Gromov–Hausdorff limits, which is a key ingredient in the proof of the Kähler–Einstein result. In Sec. 4, we give a brief survey of the more recent work on tangent cones of singular Kähler–Einstein metrics arising from Gromov–Hausdorff limits, and the connections with algebraic geometry.

Abstract:We consider the formation of singularities along the Calabi flow by assuming the uniformly bounded Sobolev constants. On Kähler surfaces we prove that if curvature tensor is not uniformly bounded, then one can form a singular model called deepest bubble ; such deepest bubble has to be a scalar flat ALE Kähler metric. In certain Kähler classes on toric Fano surfaces, the Sobolev constants are a priori bounded along the Calabi flow with small Calabi energy. We can also show in certain cases no deepest bubble can form along the flow. It follows that the curvature tensor is uniformly bounded and the flow exists for all time and converges to an extremal metric subsequently. To illustrate our results more clearly, we focus on an example on ℂℙ^2 blown up three points at generic position. Our result also implies existence of constant scalar curvature metrics on ℂℙ^2 blown up three points at generic position in the Kähler classes where the exceptional divisors have the same area.
