Abstract:We give an algebro-geometric or non-archimedean framework to study bubbling phenomena of Kahler metrics with Euclidean volume growth, after [DS17, Sun23, dBS23]. In particular, for any degenerating family to log terminal singularity, we algebraically construct a finite sequence of birational modifications of the family with milder degenerations, and compare with analytic bubbling constructions in loc.cit. We also provide approaches in terms of coordinates and valuations. Our discussion partially depends on the general framework of stability theory in our [Od24b] (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="2406.02489" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2406.02489">arXiv:2406.02489</a>) after [HL14, AHLH23].

Recent Results on the Moduli Spaces of Riemann Surfaces

Abstract:In this paper we briefly discuss some of our recent results in the study of moduli space of Riemann surfaces. It is naturally divided into two parts, one about the differential geometric aspect, another on the topological aspect of the moduli spaces. To understand the geometry of the moduli spaces we introduced new metrics, studied in detail all of the known classical complete metrics, especially the Kähler-Einstein metric. As a corollary we proved that the logarithmic cotangent bundle of the moduli space is strictly stable in the sense of Mumford. The topological results we obtained were motivated by conjectures from string theory. We will describe in this part our proofs by localization method of the Mariño-Vafa formula, its two partition analogue as well as the theory of topological vertex and the simple localization proofs of the ELSV formula and the Witten conjecture. The applications of these formulas in Gromov-Witten theory and string duality will also be mentioned.

Abstract:We exhibit families of Ricci-flat Kahler metrics on K3 surfaces which collapse to an interval, with Tian-Yau and Taub-NUT metrics occurring as bubbles. There is a corresponding continuous surjective map from the K3 surface to the interval, with regular fibers diffeomorphic to either 3-tori or Heisenberg nilmanifolds.

Abstract:We analyze the existence of Kähler-Einstein metrics of positive curvature in the neighborhood of a germ of a log terminal singularity $(X,p)$. This boils down to solve a Dirichlet problem for certain complex Monge-Ampère equations. We show that the solvability of the latter is independent of the shape of the domain and of the boundary data. We establish a Moser-Trudinger $(MT)_{\gamma}$ inequality in subcritical regimes $\gamma<\gamma_p$ and establish the existence of smooth solutions in that cases. We show that the expected critical exponent $\hat{\gamma}_p=\frac{n+1}{n} \widehat{\mathrm{vol}}(X,p)^{1/n}$ can be expressed in terms of the normalized volume, an important algebraic invariant of the singularity.

Extremal Kähler metrics on blowups

Abstract:Consider a compact Kähler manifold which either admits an extremal Kähler metric, or is a small deformation of such a manifold. We show that the blowup of the manifold at a point admits an extremal Kähler metric in Kähler classes making the exceptional divisor sufficiently small if and only if it is relatively K-stable, as predicted by the Yau-Tian-Donaldson conjecture. We also give a geometric interpretation of what relative K-stability means in this case in terms of finite dimensional geometric invariant theory. This gives a complete solution to a problem introduced and solved by Arezzo, Pacard, Singer and Székelyhidi for constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics in dimension at least three.

Abstract:We prove that the Gromov-Hausdorff compactification of the moduli space of Kahler-Einstein Del Pezzo surfaces in each degree agrees with certain algebro-geometric compactification. In particular, this recovers Tian's theorem on the existence of Kahler-Einstein metrics on smooth Del Pezzo surfaces and classifies the degenerations of such metrics. The proof is based on a combination of both algebraic and differential geometric techniques.

Abstract: We investigate the collapsing geometry of hyperk\"ahler 4-manifolds. As applications we prove two well-known conjectures in the field. (1) Any collapsed limit of unit-diameter hyperk\"ahler metrics on the K3 manifold is isometric to one of the following: the quotient of a flat 3-torus by an involution, a singular special K\"ahler metric on the 2-sphere, or the unit interval. (2) Any complete hyperk\"ahler 4-manifold with finite energy (i.e., gravitational instanton) is asymptotic to a model end at infinity.
Cobordism and Bubbles of Anything in the String Landscape

Abstract:We study bubble of nothing decays and their reverse processes, the creation of vacua through `bubbles of something', in models of the Universe based on string theory. From the four-dimensional perspective, the corresponding gravitational instantons contain an end-of-the-world (ETW) boundary or brane, realized by the internal manifold shrinking to zero size. The existence of such ETW branes is predicted by the Cobordism Conjecture. We develop the 4d EFT description of such boundaries at three levels: First, by generalizing the Witten bubble through an additional defect. Second, by replacing the compact $S^1$ with a Calabi-Yau orientifold and allowing it to shrink and disappear through a postulated defect. Third, we describe an ETW brane construction for type IIB Calabi-Yau orientifold compactifications with O3/O7 planes through an appropriate additional O5 orientifolding. Our 4d EFT formalism allows us to compute the decay/creation rates for bubbles of anything depending on two parameters: The size of the relevant defect and its tension a.k.a. the induced (generalized) deficit angle.

Abstract:We consider two classes of non-toric log del Pezzo $\mathbb{C}^*$-surfaces: on the one side the 1/3-log canonical ones and on the other side those of Picard number one and Gorenstein index at most 65. In each of the two classes we figure out the surfaces admitting a Kähler-Einstein metric, a Kähler-Ricci soliton and those allowing a Sasaki-Einstein metric on the link of their anticanonical cone. We encounter examples that admit a Kähler-Ricci soliton but no Sasaki-Einstein cone link metric.

Abstract:We give an example of a family of smooth complex algebraic surfaces of degree $6$ in $\mathbb{CP}^3$ developing an isolated elliptic singularity. We show via a gluing construction that the unique Kähler-Einstein metrics of Ricci curvature $-1$ on these sextics develop a complex hyperbolic cusp in the limit, and that near the tip of the forming cusp a Tian-Yau gravitational instanton bubbles off.

Abstract:We consider the formation of singularities along the Calabi flow by assuming the uniformly bounded Sobolev constants. On Kähler surfaces we prove that if curvature tensor is not uniformly bounded, then one can form a singular model called deepest bubble ; such deepest bubble has to be a scalar flat ALE Kähler metric. In certain Kähler classes on toric Fano surfaces, the Sobolev constants are a priori bounded along the Calabi flow with small Calabi energy. We can also show in certain cases no deepest bubble can form along the flow. It follows that the curvature tensor is uniformly bounded and the flow exists for all time and converges to an extremal metric subsequently. To illustrate our results more clearly, we focus on an example on ℂℙ^2 blown up three points at generic position. Our result also implies existence of constant scalar curvature metrics on ℂℙ^2 blown up three points at generic position in the Kähler classes where the exceptional divisors have the same area.
A Product Model for Generalizing Poincaré-Type Kähler Metrics

Abstract:We begin by defining a type of Kähler metric near the zero section of a trivial holomorphic open disk bundle $N$ over a compact Kähler manifold $X$ by incorporating flows generated by holomorphic vector fields on $X$. These metrics are then shown to deviate exponentially from Poincaré-type metrics on $N\setminus X$ in terms of the log-polar distance from $X$ in $N$. Lastly we see that they arise naturally when perturbing classes containing Poincaré-type Kähler metrics of constant scalar curvature to obtain nearby cscK metrics even when the perturbed class on $X$ does not admit a cscK metric.

Abstract:A Killing bubble is a minimal surface that arises as the fixed surface of a spacelike Killing field. We compute the bubble contributions to the Smarr relations and the mass and tension first laws for spacetimes containing both black holes and Killing bubbles. The resulting relations display an interesting interchange symmetry between the properties of black hole horizons and those of KK bubbles. This interchange symmetry reflects the underlying relation between static bubbles and black holes under double analytic continuation of the time and Kaluza-Klein directions. The thermodynamics of bubbles involve a geometrical quantity that we call the bubble surface gravity, which we show has several properties in common with the black hole surface gravity.

Some applications of canonical metrics to Landau-Ginzburg models

Abstract:It is known that a given smooth del Pezzo surface or Fano threefold $X$ admits a choice of log Calabi-Yau compactified mirror toric Landau-Ginzburg model (with respect to certain fixed Kähler classes and Gorenstein toric degenerations). Here we consider the problem of constructing a corresponding map $\Theta$ from a domain in the complexified Kähler cone of $X$ to a well-defined, separated moduli space $\mathfrak{M}$ of polarised manifolds endowed with a canonical metric. We prove a complete result for del Pezzos and a partial result for some special Fano threefolds. The construction uses some fundamental results in the theory of constant scalar curvature Kähler metrics. As a consequence $\mathfrak{M}$ parametrises $K$-stable manifolds and the domain of $\Theta$ is endowed with the pullback of a Weil-Petersson form.
