Abstract:The randomization effect of the two-way (particle-flow) interaction has been studied and quantified using the notion of distributed chaos and the results of numerical simulations and laboratory measurements. It is shown, in particular, that an increase of such parameters as the particle volume fraction, particle mass loading, and Stokes number results generally in stronger randomization of the particle-laden flows. An important role of spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry in the randomization of the particle-laden flows has been also analyzed using relevant dynamical invariants.

Abstract:According to a recent theory \cite{Li14}, when the Reynolds number is large, fully developed turbulence is caused by short term unpredictability (rough dependence upon initial data); when the Reynolds number is moderate, often transient turbulence is caused by chaos (long term unpredictability). This article aims at studying chaos in plane Couette flow at moderate Reynolds number. Based upon the work of L. van Veen and G. Kawahara \cite{VK11} on a transversal homoclinic orbit asymptotic to a limit cycle in plane Couette flow, we explore symbolic dynamics and chaos near the homoclinic orbit. Mathematical analysis shows that there is a collection of orbits in the neighborhood of the homoclinic orbit, which is in one-to-one correspondence with the collection of binary sequences. The Bernoulli shift on the binary sequences corresponds to a chaotic dynamics of a properly defined return map.

Abstract:It is traditionally believed that the macroscopic randomness has nothing to do with the micro-level uncertainty. Besides, the sensitive dependence on initial condition (SDIC) of Lorenz chaos has never been considered together with the so-called continuum-assumption of fluid (on which Lorenz equations are based), from physical and statistic viewpoints. A very fine numerical technique [6] with negligible truncation and round-off errors, called here the "clean numerical simulation" (CNS), is applied to investigate the propagation of the micro-level unavoidable uncertain fluctuation (caused by the continuum-assumption of fluid) of initial conditions for Lorenz equation with chaotic solutions. Our statistic analysis based on CNS computation of 10,000 samples shows that, due to the SDIC, the uncertainty of the micro-level statistic fluctuation of initial conditions transfers into the macroscopic randomness of chaos. This suggests that chaos might be a bridge from micro-level uncertainty to macroscopic randomness, and thus would be an origin of macroscopic randomness. We reveal in this article that, due to the SDIC of chaos and the inherent uncertainty of initial data, accurate long-term prediction of chaotic solution is not only impossible in mathematics but also has no physical meanings. This might provide us a new, different viewpoint to deepen and enrich our understandings about the SDIC of chaos. (C) 2011 Elsevier BM. All rights reserved.

Abstract:In chaotic deterministic systems, seemingly stochastic behavior is generated by relatively simple, though hidden, organizing rules and structures. Prominent among the tools used to characterize this complexity in 1D and 2D systems are techniques which exploit the topology of dynamically invariant structures. However, the path to extending many such topological techniques to three dimensions is filled with roadblocks that prevent their application to a wider variety of physical systems. Here, we overcome these roadblocks and successfully analyze a realistic model of 3D fluid advection, by extending the homotopic lobe dynamics (HLD) technique, previously developed for 2D area-preserving dynamics, to 3D volume-preserving dynamics. We start with numerically-generated finite-time chaotic-scattering data for particles entrained in a spherical fluid vortex, and use this data to build a symbolic representation of the dynamics. We then use this symbolic representation to explain and predict the self-similar fractal structure of the scattering data, to compute bounds on the topological entropy, a fundamental measure of mixing, and to discover two different mixing mechanisms, which stretch 2D material surfaces and 1D material curves in distinct ways.

Mathematically established chaos in fluid dynamics: recurrent patterns forecast statistics

Abstract:We analyse in the Taylor-Couette system, a canonical flow that has been studied extensively for over a century, a parameter regime exhibiting dynamics that can be approximated by a simple discrete map. The map has exceptionally neat mathematical properties, allowing to prove its chaotic nature as well as the existence of infinitely many unstable periodic orbits. Remarkably, the fluid system and the discrete map share a common catalog of unstable periodic solutions with the tent map, a clear indication of topological conjugacy. A sufficient number of these solutions enables the construction of a conjugacy homeomorphism, which can be used to predict the probability density function of direct numerical simulations. These results rekindle Hopf's aspiration of elucidating turbulence through the study of recurrent patterns.

Superfluidity and Chaos in low dimensional circuits

Abstract:The hallmark of superfluidity is the appearance of "vortex states" carrying a quantized metastable circulating current. Considering a unidirectional flow of particles in a ring, at first it appears that any amount of scattering will randomize the velocity, as in the Drude model, and eventually the ergodic steady state will be characterized by a vanishingly small fluctuating current. However, Landau and followers have shown that this is not always the case. If elementary excitations (e.g. phonons) have higher velocity than that of the flow, simple kinematic considerations imply metastability of the vortex state: the energy of the motion cannot dissipate into phonons. On the other hand if this Landau criterion is violated the circulating current can decay. Below we show that the standard Landau and Bogoliubov superfluidity criteria fail in low-dimensional circuits. Proper determination of the superfluidity regime-diagram must account for the crucial role of chaos, an ingredient missing from the conventional stability analysis. Accordingly, we find novel types of superfluidity, associated with irregular or chaotic or breathing vortex states.

Abstract:Randomization of the Lagrangian chaos in fluid dynamics has been analyzed using results of direct numerical simulations, laboratory measurements, and oceanic observations. The notion of distributed chaos has been used in order to quantify this phenomenon (the main dimensionless parameter of distributed chaos has been used as a measure of randomization). The analysis includes isotropic homogeneous fluid motion, buoyancy-driven flows, particle-laden flows, magnetohydrodynamic flows, and subsurface oceanic mixing. The role of the dissipative Birkhoff-Saffman and Loitsyanskii invariants as well as the invariants related to the spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry (in particular, the Levich-Tsinober invariant) in the randomization phenomenon has been also investigated.

Conserved Quantities in Models of Classical Chaos

Abstract:Quantum chaos is a major subject of interest in condensed matter theory, and has recently motivated new questions in the study of classical chaos. In particular, recent studies have uncovered interesting physics in the relationship between chaos and conserved quantities in models of quantum chaos. In this paper, we investigate this relationship in two simple models of classical chaos: the infinite-temperature Heisenberg spin chain, and the directed polymer in a random medium. We relate these models by drawing analogies between the energy landscape over which the directed polymer moves and the magnetization of the spin chain. We find that the coupling of the chaos to these conserved quantities results in, among other things, a marked transition from the rough perturbation profiles predicted by analogy to the KPZ equation to smooth, triangular profiles with reduced wandering exponents. These results suggest that diffusive conserved quantities can, in some cases, be the dominant forces shaping the development of chaos in classical systems.

Abstract:The validity of phenomenological equations describing dissipative processes in chaotic regime was tested in this paper. We carried out a direct stochatic simulation of the chemical Lorenz model and found that in this chemical chaos model the deterministic attractor and Poincaré maps constructed from it differ drastically from their mesoscopic counterparts of stochastic simulation. These results indicated that, in contrast with previous studies of Williamowski–Rössler model, intrinsic fluctuations do have pronounced effect in the chaotic regime in the case of chemical Lorenz. The fact that the effect of intrinsic fluctuations on macroscopic dynamics differ from case to case proposes that the issue whether phenomenological equations are valid or not in the chaotic regime deserves further studies in the future.

Abstract:Polymer solutions can develop chaotic flows, even at low inertia. This purely elastic turbulence is well studied, but little is known about the transition to chaos. In 2D channel flow and parallel shear flow, traveling wave solutions involving coherent structures are present for sufficiently large fluid elasticity. We numerically study 2D periodic parallel shear flow in viscoelastic fluids and show that these traveling waves become oscillatory and undergo a series of period-doubling bifurcations en-route to chaos.

Abstract:We present a review of the chaotic hypothesis and discuss its applications to intermittency in statistical mechanics and fluid mechanics proposing a quantitative definition. Entropy creation rate is interpreted in terms of certain intermittency phenomena. An attempt to a theory of the experiment of Ciliberto-Laroche on the fluctuation law is presented.

Abstract:As the Reynolds number is increased, a laminar fluid flow becomes turbulent, and the range of time and length scales associated with the flow increases. Yet, in a turbulent reactive flow system, as we increase the Reynolds number, we observe the emergence of a single dominant timescale in the acoustic pressure fluctuations, as indicated by its loss of multifractality. Such emergence of order from chaos is intriguing. We perform experiments in a turbulent reactive flow system consisting of flame, acoustic, and hydrodynamic subsystems interacting nonlinearly. We study the evolution of short-time correlated dynamics between the acoustic field and the flame in the spatiotemporal domain of the system. The order parameter, defined as the fraction of the correlated dynamics, increases gradually from zero to one. We find that the susceptibility of the order parameter, correlation length, and correlation time diverge at a critical point between chaos and order. Our results show that the observed emergence of order from chaos is a continuous phase transition. Moreover, we provide experimental evidence that the critical exponents characterizing this transition fall in the universality class of directed percolation. Our paper demonstrates how a real-world complex, nonequilibrium turbulent reactive flow system exhibits universal behavior near a critical point. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevE.109.064214 ©2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:A hydrodynamic model of active, low Reynolds number suspensions, shows the emergence of an asymptotic state with a universal spectral scaling and non-Gaussian (intermittent) fluctuations in the velocity field. Such states arise when these systems are pushed beyond a critical level of activity and show features akin to high Reynolds number, inertial turbulence. We provide compelling numerical and analytical evidence for the existence of such a transition at a critical value of activity and further show that the maximally chaotic states are tied to this transition.

Abstract:We describe some highlights in the theory of chaos, that started with Poincare (1899). Generic systems have both ordered and chaotic domains. Chaos appears mainly near un- stable periodic orbits. Large chaotic domains are due to resonance overlap. Two recent developments of the theory of chaos, refer (a) to the analytical formulae (Moser series) in the chaotic domains near unstable periodic orbits, and (b) quantum chaos, described by the Bohmian theory of orbits.

Abstract:Morphogenesis, as it is understood in a wide sense by René Thom, is considered for various types of chaos. That is, those, obtained by period-doubling cascade, Devaney's and Li-Yorke chaos. Moreover, in discussion form we consider inheritance of intermittency, the double-scroll Chua's attractor and quasiperiodical motions as a possible skeleton of a chaotic attractor. To make our introduction of the paper more clear, we have to say that one may consider other various accompanying concepts of chaos such that a structure of the chaotic attractor, its fractal dimension, form of the bifurcation diagram, the spectra of Lyapunov exponents, etc. We make comparison of the main concept of our paper with Turing's morphogenesis and John von Neumann automata, considering that this may be not only formal one, but will give ideas for the chaos development in the morphogenesis of Turing and for self-replicating machines. To provide rigorous study of the subject, we introduce new definitions such as chaotic sets of functions, the generator and replicator of chaos, and precise description of ingredients for Devaney and Li-Yorke chaos in continuous dynamics. Appropriate simulations which illustrate the morphogenesis phenomenon are provided.

Phase Transitions in Anisotropic Turbulence

Abstract:Turbulence is a widely observed state of fluid flows, characterized by complex, nonlinear interactions between motions across a broad spectrum of length and time scales. While turbulence is ubiquitous, from teacups to planetary atmospheres, oceans and stars, its manifestations can vary considerably between different physical systems. For instance, three-dimensional (3D) turbulent flows display a forward energy cascade from large to small scales, while in two-dimensional (2D) turbulence, energy cascades from small to large scales. In a given physical system, a transition between such disparate regimes of turbulence can occur when a control parameter reaches a critical value. The behavior of flows close to such transition points, which separate qualitatively distinct \textit{phases} of turbulence, has been found to be unexpectedly rich. Here, we survey recent findings on such transitions in highly anisotropic turbulent fluid flows, including turbulence in thin layers and under the influence of rapid rotation. We also review recent work on transitions induced by turbulent fluctuations, such as random reversals and transitions between large-scale vortices and jets, among others. The relevance of these results and their ramifications for future investigations are discussed.

Defining classical and quantum chaos through adiabatic transformations

Abstract:We propose a formalism which defines chaos in both quantum and classical systems in an equivalent manner by means of adiabatic transformations. The complexity of adiabatic transformations which preserve classical time-averaged trajectories (quantum eigenstates) in response to Hamiltonian deformations serves as a measure of chaos. This complexity is quantified by the (properly regularized) fidelity susceptibility. Our exposition clearly showcases the common structures underlying quantum and classical chaos and allows us to distinguish integrable, chaotic but non-thermalizing, and ergodic regimes. We apply the fidelity susceptibility to a model of two coupled spins and demonstrate that it successfully predicts the universal onset of chaos, both for finite spin $S$ and in the classical limit $S\to\infty$. Interestingly, we find that finite $S$ effects are anomalously large close to integrability.
