Abstract:The randomization effect of the two-way (particle-flow) interaction has been studied and quantified using the notion of distributed chaos and the results of numerical simulations and laboratory measurements. It is shown, in particular, that an increase of such parameters as the particle volume fraction, particle mass loading, and Stokes number results generally in stronger randomization of the particle-laden flows. An important role of spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry in the randomization of the particle-laden flows has been also analyzed using relevant dynamical invariants.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is to study the influence of the two - phase interaction (i.e., the interaction between particles and fluid) in particle - laden flows on the hydrodynamic randomization and to quantify this influence. Specifically, by analyzing the concept of distributed chaos and the results of numerical simulations and laboratory measurements, the paper explores how increasing the particle volume fraction, particle mass loading, and Stokes number generally leads to stronger randomization of particle - laden flows. In addition, the paper also analyzes the important role of the spontaneous breakdown of local reflection symmetry in the randomization of particle - laden flows. In the paper, the kinetic energy spectrum \(E(k)\) is used to characterize the chaotic state of the fluid under different conditions, where \(k\) is the wavenumber. For different particle types and parameter settings, the form of the kinetic energy spectrum can be expressed as: \[ E(k) \propto \exp\left(-\left(\frac{k}{k_\beta}\right)^\beta\right) \] The smaller the value of \(\beta\) here, the higher the degree of randomization of the fluid. Through direct numerical simulation (DNS) and experimental data, the paper shows the changes in the kinetic energy spectrum under different conditions, thus verifying the above - mentioned theoretical analysis. These results are not only helpful for understanding the dynamic characteristics of particle - laden flows but also provide an important reference for further research on complex fluid systems.
