Abstract:In this paper, we continue the discussion as done in <cit.> on turbulent channel flow described by the Navier-Stokes model and the Navier-Stokes-alpha model. We study the non-stationary solutions for the Navier-Stokes equations and Navier-Stokes-α model having particular function forms. In particular, the term of sum of pressure and potential can be shown to be harmonic in the space variable.

The Navier-Stokes equation and a fully developed turbulence

Abstract:In fairly general conditions we give explicit (smooth) solutions for the potential flow. We show that, rigorously speaking, the equations of the fluid mechanics have not rotational solutions. However, within the usual approximations of an incompressible fluid and an isentropic flow, the remaining Navier-Stokes equation has approximate vorticial (rotational) solutions, generated by viscosity. In general, the vortices are unstable, and a discrete distribution of vorticial solutions is not in mechanical equilibrium; it forms an unstable vorticial liquid. On the other hand, these solutions may exhibit turbulent, fluctuating instabilities for large variations of the velocity over short distances. We represent a fully developed turbulence as a homogeneous, isotropic and highly-fluctuating distribution of singular centres of turbulence. A regular mean flow can be included. In these circumstances the Navier-Stokes equation exhibits three time scales. The equations of the mean flow can be disentangled from the equations of the fluctuating part, which is reduced to a vanishing inertial term. This latter equation is not satisfied after averaging out the temporal fluctuations. However, for a homogeneous and isotropic distribution of non-singular turbulence centres the equation for the inertial term is satisfied trivially, i.e. both the average fluctuating velocity and the average fluctuating inertial term are zero. If the velocity is singular at the turbulence centres, we are left with a quasi-ideal classical gas of singularities, or a solution of singularities in quasi thermal equilibrium in the background fluid. This is an example of an emergent dynamics. We give three examples of vorticial liquids.

Abstract:A solution to this problem has been unknown for years and the fact that it hasn’t been solved yet leaves a lot of unanswered questions regarding Engineering and Pure Mathematics. Turbulence is a specific topic in fluid mechanics which is a vital part of the course when it comes to real life situations. In two and three dimensional systems of equations and some initial conditions, if the smooth solutions exist, they have bounded kinetic energy. In three space dimensions and time, given an initial velocity vector, there exists a velocity field and scalar pressure field which are both smooth and globally defined that solve the Navier-Stokes equations. There are difficulties in two-dimensions and three dimensions in a possible solution and which have been unsolved for a long time and our goal is to propose a solution in three-dimensions. Lets see if we can relate a couple of courses of pure mathematics to come up with an implication.

Abstract:The paper briefly reviews the progress in turbulence research in the 20th century and a number of issues are addressed based on achievements. The modern theroy of Navier-Stokes equation provides the theoretical basis for the development of turbulence research. The significance and bottle neck of DNS and the physical experiment in exploring turbulent flows are analyzed. The active manipulation of turbulence is directly guided by the knowledge of large-scale coherent structures. The existing problems in the large-eddy simulation are also pointed out. Scalar turbulence, which behaves quite different from fluid turbulence in many aspects, has drawn much attention in recent years. Besides the analysis of the difficulties in turbulence research, a number of examples are also presented to show how to use modern theory, computer and high technology to explore the nature of turbulence.

Abstract:For spatiotemporal chaos described by partial differential equations, there are generally locations where the dynamical variable achieves its local extremum or where the time partial derivative of the variable vanishes instantaneously. To a large extent, the location and movement of these topologically special points determine the qualitative structure of the disordered states. We analyze numerically statistical properties of the topologically special points in one-dimensional spatiotemporal chaos. The probability distribution functions for the number of point, the lifespan, and the distance covered during their lifetime are obtained from numerical simulations. Mathematically, we establish a probabilistic model to describe the dynamics of these topologically special points. In spite of the different definitions in different spatiotemporal chaos, the dynamics of these special points can be described in a uniform approach.

Abstract:In this visualisation the instantaneous local velocity is expressed in terms of four components to capture the development of and interactions between coherent structures in turbulent flows. It is then possible to isolate the terms linked with each major type of structure and identify the corresponding subsets of the Navier-Stokes equations that are easier to solve than the full version. Each of these subsets applies to a domain in the flow field not a flow regime. The traditional statistics of turbulence are shown to be not specific to turbulent flow. In particular the Reynolds stresses, the probability density function, the dissipation, the production and the energy spectrum are obtained from one subset associated with unsteady "laminar" flow. The evidence also indicates that the Kolmogorov scale does not represent an eddy size and more importantly that it does not require the assumption of local isotropy. Applications of this visualisation include a proposal for a theoretical closure of the Reynolds equations, the collapse of velocity and skin friction profiles for Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluid flows in all geometries into unique master curves. A new partial derivative is introduced that decouples the effect of diffusion and convection simplifying the mathematical solution of subsets of the NS equations with implications for a more efficient generation of computational fluid dynamics packages. Finally the consequences to turbulent heat and mass transfer are examined.

Abstract:Poincare's invariance principle for Hamiltonian flows implies Kelvin's principle for solution to Incompressible Euler Equation. Iyer-Constantin Circulation Theorem offers a stochastic analog of Kelvin's principle for Navier-Stokes Equation. Weakly symplectic diffusions are defined to produce stochastically symplectic flows in a systematic way. With the aid of symplectic diffusions, we produce a family of martigales associated with solutions to Navier-Stokes Equation that in turn can be used to prove Iyer-Constantin Circulation Theorem. We also review some basic facts in symplectic and contact geometry and their applications to Euler Equation.

Abstract:Atmospheric flows, an example of turbulent fluid flows, exhibit fractal fluctuations of all space-time scales ranging from turbulence scale of mm-sec to climate scales of thousands of kilometers–years and may be visualized as a nested continuum of weather cycles or periodicities, the smaller cycles existing as intrinsic fine structure of the larger cycles. The power spectra of fractal fluctuations exhibit inverse power law form signifying long-range correlations identified as self-organized criticality and are ubiquitous to dynamical systems in nature and is manifested as sensitive dependence on initial condition or 'deterministic chaos' in finite precision computer realizations of nonlinear mathematical models of real world dynamical systems such as atmospheric flows. Though the self-similar nature of atmospheric flows have been widely documented and discussed during the last three to four decades, the exact physical mechanism is not yet identified. There now exists an urgent need to develop and incorporate basic physical concepts of nonlinear dynamics and chaos into classical meteorological theory for more realistic simulation and prediction of weather and climate. A review of nonlinear dynamics and chaos in meteorology and atmospheric physics is summarized in this paper.

Abstract:According to a recent theory \cite{Li14}, when the Reynolds number is large, fully developed turbulence is caused by short term unpredictability (rough dependence upon initial data); when the Reynolds number is moderate, often transient turbulence is caused by chaos (long term unpredictability). This article aims at studying chaos in plane Couette flow at moderate Reynolds number. Based upon the work of L. van Veen and G. Kawahara \cite{VK11} on a transversal homoclinic orbit asymptotic to a limit cycle in plane Couette flow, we explore symbolic dynamics and chaos near the homoclinic orbit. Mathematical analysis shows that there is a collection of orbits in the neighborhood of the homoclinic orbit, which is in one-to-one correspondence with the collection of binary sequences. The Bernoulli shift on the binary sequences corresponds to a chaotic dynamics of a properly defined return map.

Wave turbulence: A solvable problem applied to Navier-Stokes

Abstract:Wave turbulence and eddy turbulence are the two regimes that we may encounter in nature. The attention of fluid mechanics being mainly focused on incompressible hydrodynamics, it is usually the second regime that is treated in books, whereas waves are often present in geophysics and astrophysics. In these lecture notes, I present the theory of wave turbulence which is free from the closure problem encountered in eddy turbulence. Basically, the wave amplitude is introduced in a multiple time scale method as a small parameter to derive the so-called kinetic equations from which exact results can be obtained (power-law spectra, direction of the cascade, Kolmogorov's constant) and compared with the data. Two hydrodynamic applications are considered with capillary waves and inertial waves, the first leading to isotropic turbulence and the second to anisotropic turbulence.

Abstract:We prove a logarithmic improvement of the Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg partial regularity theorem for the Navier-Stokes equations. The key idea is to find a quantitative counterpart for the absolute continuity of the dissipation energy using a pigeonholing argument. Based on the same method, for any suitable weak solution, we show the existence of intervals of regularity in one spatial direction with length depending exponentially on the natural local energies. Then, we give two applications of the latter result in the axially symmetric case. The first one is a local regularity criterion for suitable weak solutions with small swirl. The second one is a slightly improved one-point CKN criterion which implies all known (slightly supercritical) Type I regularity results in the literature.

Abstract:We describe some highlights in the theory of chaos, that started with Poincare (1899). Generic systems have both ordered and chaotic domains. Chaos appears mainly near un- stable periodic orbits. Large chaotic domains are due to resonance overlap. Two recent developments of the theory of chaos, refer (a) to the analytical formulae (Moser series) in the chaotic domains near unstable periodic orbits, and (b) quantum chaos, described by the Bohmian theory of orbits.

Abstract:Time-uniform log-Sobolev inequalities (LSI) satisfied by solutions of semi-linear mean-field equations have recently appeared to be a key tool to obtain time-uniform propagation of chaos estimates. This work addresses the more general settings of time-inhomogeneous Fokker-Planck equations. Time-uniform LSI are obtained in two cases, either with the bounded-Lipschitz perturbation argument with respect to a reference measure, or with a coupling approach at high temperature. These arguments are then applied to mean-field equations, where, on the one hand, sharp marginal propagation of chaos estimates are obtained in smooth cases and, on the other hand, time-uniform global propagation of chaos is shown in the case of vortex interactions with quadratic confinement potential on the whole space. In this second case, an important point is to establish global gradient and Hessian estimates, which is of independent interest. We prove these bounds in the more general situation of non-attractive logarithmic and Riesz singular interactions.

Abstract:Various issues with regard to chaos and recurrence in infinite dimensions are discussed. The doctrine we are trying to derive is that Sobolev spaces over bounded spatial domains do host chaos and recurrence, while Sobolev spaces over unbounded spatial domains are lack of chaos and recurrence. Local Sobolev spaces over unbounded spatial domains can host chaos and are natural phase spaces e.g. for fluid problems, but are very challenging to study.

Abstract:In this article we have studied the nonlinear interaction between ellipticity and dissipation in a set of model equations (1.1) and established the relation between this interaction and chaos. In addition to theoretical investigations, extensive numerical simulations with these equations have been made, and different routes to chaos have been found. The numerical studies have revealed the chaotic nature of the solutions.

Abstract:The randomization effect of the two-way (particle-flow) interaction has been studied and quantified using the notion of distributed chaos and the results of numerical simulations and laboratory measurements. It is shown, in particular, that an increase of such parameters as the particle volume fraction, particle mass loading, and Stokes number results generally in stronger randomization of the particle-laden flows. An important role of spontaneous breaking of the local reflectional symmetry in the randomization of the particle-laden flows has been also analyzed using relevant dynamical invariants.
