Abstract:In this paper we investigate the word problem of the free Burnside semigroup satisfying x^2=x^3 and having two generators. Elements of this semigroup are classes of equivalent words. A natural way to solve the word problem is to select a unique "canonical" representative for each equivalence class. We prove that overlap-free words and so-called almost overlap-free words (this notion is some generalization of the notion of overlap-free words) can serve as canonical representatives for corresponding equivalence classes. We show that such a word in a given class, if any, can be efficiently found. As a result, we construct a linear-time algorithm that partially solves the word problem for the semigroup under consideration.

Abstract:We study the language-theoretic aspects of the word problem, in the sense of Duncan & Gilman, of free products of semigroups and monoids. First, we provide algebraic tools for studying classes of languages known as super-AFLs, which generalise e.g. the context-free or the indexed languages. When C is a super-AFL closed under reversal, we prove that the semigroup (monoid) free product of two semigroups (resp. monoids) with word problem in C also has word problem in C . This recovers and generalises a recent result by Brough, Cain & Pfeiffer that the class of context-free semigroups (monoids) is closed under taking free products. As a group-theoretic corollary, we deduce that the word problem of the (group) free product of two groups with word problem in C is also in C . As a particular case, we find that the free product of two groups with indexed word problem has indexed word problem.

Abstract:We consider semigroup algorithmic problems in finitely generated metabelian groups. Our paper focuses on three decision problems introduced by Choffrut and Karhum\"{a}ki (2005): the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain a neutral element?), the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) and the Inverse Problem (does a semigroup contain the inverse of a generator?). We show that all three problems are decidable for finitely generated sub-semigroups of finitely generated metabelian groups. In particular, we establish a correspondence between polynomial semirings and sub-semigroups of metabelian groups using an interaction of graph theory, convex polytopes, algebraic geometry and number theory. Since the Semigroup Membership problem (does a semigroup contain a given element?) is known to be undecidable in finitely generated metabelian groups, our result completes the decidability characterization of semigroup algorithmic problems in metabelian groups.

Abstract:The class of all finitely generated semigroups with a deterministic context-free word problem is shown to be closed under free products, answering a question of T. Brough, A. J. Cain, and M. Pfeiffer. On the other hand, it is proved that the class of all finitely generated monoids with a deterministic context-free word problem is not closed under monoid free products.

Abstract:We consider semigroup algorithmic problems in the wreath product $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$. Our paper focuses on two decision problems introduced by Choffrut and Karhumäki (2005): the Identity Problem (does a semigroup contain the neutral element?) and the Group Problem (is a semigroup a group?) for finitely generated sub-semigroups of $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$. We show that both problems are decidable. Our result complements the undecidability of the Semigroup Membership Problem (does a semigroup contain a given element?) in $\mathbb{Z} \wr \mathbb{Z}$ shown by Lohrey, Steinberg and Zetzsche (ICALP 2013), and contributes an important step towards solving semigroup algorithmic problems in general metabelian groups.

Abstract:The cyclic graph $\Gamma(S)$ of a semigroup $S$ is the simple graph whose vertex set is $S$ and two vertices $x, y$ are adjacent if the subsemigroup generated by $x$ and $y$ is monogenic. In this paper, we classify the semigroup $S$ such that whose cyclic graph $\Gamma(S)$ is complete, bipartite, tree, regular and a null graph, respectively. Further, we determine the clique number of $\Gamma(S)$ for an arbitrary semigroup $S$. We obtain the independence number of $\Gamma(S)$ if $S$ is a finite monogenic semigroup. At the final part of this paper, we give bounds for independence number of $\Gamma(S)$ if $S$ is a semigroup of bounded exponent and we also characterize the semigroups attaining the bounds.

Abstract:Algorithmic issues concerning Elliott local semigroups are seldom considered in the literature, although these combinatorial structures completely classify AF algebras. In general, the addition operation of an Elliott local semigroup is {\it partial}, but for every AF algebra $\mathfrak B$ whose Murray-von Neumann order of projections is a lattice, this operation is uniquely extendible to the addition of an involutive monoid $E(\mathfrak B)$. Let $\mathfrak M_1$ be the Farey AF algebra introduced by the present author in 1988 and rediscovered by F. Boca in 2008. The freeness properties of the involutive monoid $E(\mathfrak M_1)$ yield a natural word problem for every AF algebra $\mathfrak B$ with singly generated $E(\mathfrak B)$, because $\mathfrak B$ is automatically a quotient of $\mathfrak M_1$. Given two formulas $\phi$ and $\psi$ in the language of involutive monoids, the problem asks to decide whether $\phi$ and $\psi$ code the same equivalence of projections of $\mathfrak B$. This mimics the classical definition of the word problem of a group presented by generators and relations. We show that the word problem of $\mathfrak M_1$ is solvable in polynomial time, and so is the word problem of the Behnke-Leptin algebras $\mathcal A_{n,k}$, and of the Effros-Shen algebras $\mathfrak F_{\theta}$, for $\theta\in [0,1]\setminus \mathbb Q$ a real algebraic number, or $\theta = 1/e$. We construct a quotient of $\mathfrak M_1$ having a Gödel incomplete word problem, and show that no primitive quotient of $\mathfrak M_1$ is Gödel incomplete.

Abstract:We give an introduction to the ideas behind G. S. Tseytin's 1958 construction of a seven-relation semigroup with undecidable word problem. We give a history of the ideas leading up to its construction, some intuition for the proof, and provide an overview of some subsequent results and developments which stem from this remarkable semigroup. An English translation of Tseytin's article by the author of the present article is supplemented at the end of the article (the Russian original was published in Trudy Mat. Inst. Steklov 52 (1958), pp. 172--189).

Abstract:Sufficient conditions are obtained under which the semigroup ring of a semigroup, in particular, of an inverse semigroup, is weakly regular. For some inverse semigroups and some orthodox semigroups, the necessary and sufficient conditions for the weak regularity of the semigroup rings are found. A problem is mentioned especially which is much more difficult for weak regularity than for regularity. Only a partial solution of this problem is given for weak regularity.

Abstract:The Diophantine problem for a monoid M is the decision problem to decide whether any given system of equations has a solution in M . In this short note, we give a simple example of a context-free, word-hyperbolic, finitely presented, special monoid M with trivial group of units, and such that the Diophantine problem is undecidable in M . This answers two questions asked by Garreta and Gray in 2019, and shows that the decidability of the Diophantine problem in hyperbolic groups, as proved by Dahmani and Guirardel, does not generalise to word-hyperbolic monoids.

Abstract:How to give the set-solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation is an important subject[1]. The aim of this paper is to study this subject under inverse semigroups. For an inverse semigroup S and a map R:S × S→S×S, we give a sufficient and necessary condition for R to be a solution of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation, and then for the case of Clifford semigroups, four set-solutions of the quantum Yang-Baxter equation are obtained. The solutions of the equation under the meaning of groups are generalized. This is an improvement of the study on Drinfeld problem.
On the isomorphism problem for power semigroups

Abstract:Let $\mathcal P(S)$ be the semigroup obtained by equipping the family of all non-empty subsets of a (multiplicatively written) semigroup $S$ with the operation of setwise multiplication induced by $S$ itself. We call a subsemigroup $P$ of $\mathcal P(S)$ downward complete if any element of $S$ lies in at least one set $X \in P$ and any non-empty subset of a set in $P$ is still in $P$. We obtain, for a commutative semigroup $S$, a characterization of the cancellative elements of a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(S)$ in terms of the cancellative elements of $S$. Consequently, we show that, if $H$ and $K$ are cancellative semigroups and either of them is commutative, then every isomorphism from a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(H)$ to a downward complete subsemigroup of $\mathcal P(K)$ restricts to an isomorphism from $H$ to $K$. This solves a special case of a problem of Tamura and Shafer from the late 1960s and generalizes a recent result by Bienvenu and Geroldinger, where it is assumed, among other conditions, that $H$ and $K$ are numerical monoids.

Abstract:This article studies the properties of word-hyperbolic semigroups and monoids, i.e. those having context-free multiplication tables with respect to a regular combing, as defined by Duncan & Gilman. In particular, the preservation of word-hyperbolicity under taking free products is considered. Under mild conditions on the semigroups involved, satisfied e.g. by monoids or regular semigroups, we prove that the semigroup free product of two word-hyperbolic semigroups is again word-hyperbolic. Analogously, with a mild condition on the uniqueness of representation for the identity element, satisfied e.g. by groups, we prove that the monoid free product of two word-hyperbolic monoids is word-hyperbolic. The methods are language-theoretically general, and apply equally well to semigroups, monoids, or groups with a $\mathbf{C}$-multiplication table, where $\mathbf{C}$ is any reversal-closed super-$\operatorname{AFL}$, in the sense of Greibach. In particular, we deduce that the free product of two groups with $\operatorname{ET0L}$ resp. indexed multiplication tables again has an $\operatorname{ET0L}$ resp. indexed multiplication table.

Answering Five Open Problems Involving Semigroup Conjugacy

Abstract:A semigroup conjugacy is an equivalence relation that equals group conjugacy when the semigroup is a group. In this note, we answer five open problems related to semigroup conjugacy. (Problem One) We say a conjugacy ~ is partition-covering if for every set X and every partition of the set, there exists a semigroup with universe X such that the partition gives the ~-conjugacy classes of the semigroup. We prove that six well-studied conjugacy relations -- ~o, ~c, ~n, ~p, ~p*, and ~tr -- are all partition-covering. (Problem Two) For two semigroup elements a and b in S, we say a ~p b if there exists u and v in S such that a=uv and b=vu. We give an example of a semigroup that is embeddable in a group for which ~p is not transitive. (Problem Three) We construct an infinite chain of first-order definable semigroup conjugacies. (Problem Four) We construct a semigroup for which ~o is a congruence and Sõ is not cancellative. (Problem Five) We construct a semigroup for which ~p is not transitive while, for each of the semigroup's variants, ~p is transitive.

Abstract:Endowing the set of functional graphs (FGs) with the sum (disjoint union of graphs) and product (standard direct product on graphs) operations induces on FGs a structure of a commutative semiring R. The operations on R can be naturally extended to the set of univariate polynomials R[X] over R. This paper provides a polynomial time algorithm for deciding if equations of the type AX=B have solutions when A is just a single cycle and B a set of cycles of identical size. We also prove a similar complexity result for some variants of the previous equation.
