Abstract:With the depletion of conventional energy resources and increasing environmental burden in the 21st century, countries across the globe have shifted their focus to the deployment of renewable energy and energy storage systems. There has been tremendous progress made in the design, development, and commercialization of these systems. New fundamental principles, operating mechanisms, designs, new materials, and hybrid technologies have been proposed. The hybrid systems have been deployed across rural areas where grids for electricity transmission are not feasible. As per the current scenario, there exist certain challenges that are inevitable and raises serious concerns. Major problems include predicting its real‐time degradation, detecting and preventing failures, achieving higher performance, and recycling and recovery of vital materials from these spent systems. The problems are addressed by the application of an intelligent optimization approach, artificial intelligence, new development of materials, new experiments and devices, and so on. In the context of energy storage systems, specifically batteries, the solutions include multidisciplinary aspects from cell level to pack level. From the cell level point of view, new cathode materials are developed for improving the cyclic, structural, and electrochemical performance of batteries. These materials have been tested and validated against the benchmarks. Furthermore, estimation of health status of the cell is carried out using an optimization approach. An experimental device measuring stack stress of the battery is developed. From the pack level, new designs are generated by multiobjective optimization of its geometry parameters. In addition, materials prepared by additive manufacturing processes are used to fabricate battery packs used in EVs. This is to maintain its higher mechanical performance and structure integrity while ensuring its lower weight. To maximize heat dissipation from the system, the thermal management design of battery packs is proposed, which includes reuse of heat accumulated in batteries for cabin heating/cooling and other purposes. A study on modelling and control of battery packs used as energy storage in hybrid grid systems is conducted for its efficacy and practical application. For recycling, an approach based on a combined neural network and iterative optimization is proposed for improving the efficiency of recovery of materials. There still exists good scope for further extension on these conducted studies, such as proposition of deep learning algorithms, development of a big database for energy storage, application of automated robotic systems for recycling, use of nondestructive tests for health estimation of cells, and so on. In brief, our special issue has received research articles from across the world.
