Abstract:Energy saving is now an important issue for many industrial sectors and examples are power generation, steel making, paper making and general material processing, etc. These industrial processes were originally designed when the energy was cheap and plentiful years ago. However, nowadays the continuous increase of energy costs world-wide has made the operation of these industrial sectors difficult in terms of ensuring their profitability. For example, in papermaking, a number of paper mills were closed down in the UK partly due to the increased energy expenses to run their production. On the other hand, the production systems used in these industrial sectors have been largely managed and controlled by distributed control systems (DCSs). DCSs are basically a computer networked control system that performs a number of tasks such as production planning, scheduling, production control and monitoring. Such a distributed control structure allows a large volume of process and quality data to be collected. These data reflect the performance of production systems in terms of hybrid production indexes that consist of product quality, production efficiency and energy costs. As a result, it is necessary to explore how the existing operating systems can be improved in terms of energy efficiency. This requires a considerable research effort to be made for energy generation, energy usage, energy recovery and monitoring and health management for complex industrial processes. In this feature issue, we have arranged three papers along the above line. The first paper deals with the optimization of combustion system in coal-based power generation so that the efficiency of the power generation can be improved. The second paper addresses energy saving issues in paper making processes, where threephase energy modelling technique has been proposed. The third paper looks into data driven prognosis and health management for complex industrial systems, where energy flow models are used together with passivity concepts and stochastic distribution control so as to monitor the health status of the concerned industrial processes. We hope that the readers can benefit from these three papers on how energy saving issues can be addressed from different angles. Abstract:It's systematically analyzed that energy efficiency optimization technology has been applied in the field of steel industry. The fundamental principal of energy optimization technology is reasonably matching the quality and price of energy as well as energy-dominated systematic energy efficiency management system. Specific measures of energy optimization have been put forward, which include taking high efficiency utilized technology such as energy saving from the original, the production process and recycling of waste heat and waste energy etc., integrating and configuring energy in an optimized way of high efficiency and excellent quality, fully realizing the function of different energy in order to optimize the utilization sequence of energy, and improving the energy medium system by themselves. Finally it is clearly pointed out that the steel industry should pay more consideration about the great deal of energy system which they have used now and an ideal energy evaluation methodology and standard should be built as soon as possible if they want to take full usage of the real role and function of energy in all aspects.

Abstract:High-energy consuming industries are typically energy-intensive, and it is worthy of noting that coal and electricity play dominant role in energy consumption structure for these industries. Under the circumstances of energy resources shortage as well as the urgent needs for energy-consuming reduction and low-carbon sustainable development, energy conservation, along with significant emphasis on energy saving strategy in coal utilization should be prior to other solutions. This paper studys the energy saving issues in seven industries including petrochemistry, iron & steel, building materials, chemistry, non-ferrous metals, papermaking and textile, and highlights the concept of energy-convservation-oriented development. With comprehensive recognition of current coal utilization in energy-intensive industries, the technical gaps between home and abroad are further analyzed. Subsequently, the SWOT analysis and research on industrial technology roadmaps are applied for elaborating various challenges and chances for these industries, thereby leading to the effective energy-saving paths and major technical development directions. Finally, the role of energy conservation in coal utilization was emphasized regarding to its great significance for sustainable development of the high-energy consuming industries.

Abstract:Process industries such as steel and petrochemical engineering are the pillar industry of national economy, which are the foundation to achieve “manufacturing prower” and the top 10 development areas of “Made in China 2025.” So far, the disharmony of equipment and process engineering in process industries results in the outstanding problems in safety and economic operation, such as high energy consumption and high failure rates of equipments. In this paper, the reasons are analyzed in design and construction, busi-ness management, government orientation and talent cultivation. Development strategies are put forward for greenization, intelligenti-zation and remanufacture in service of equipments in process industries. Some strategies and policy proposals are also put forward for greening design and manufacture, intelligentized supervisory control of health and energy efifciency for equipment, and remanufacture in service.

Abstract:Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from industrial sectors are increasing, particularly in the developing world where pursuing industrialization has been highly addressed. This calls for further studies to learn and share experiences for developing countries. In order to fill in such a research gap, this special issue focuses on examining the recent trend of industrial emissions in developing countries. Among the manuscripts submitted to the Special Issue, twelve papers have been accepted after review, covering assessment indicators, tools and methods, and policies. Key industrial sectors, including cement, lime, aluminum, coal, mining, glass, soda ash, etc, have been investigated. Valuable policy insights have been raised, including wide scale upgrading, replacement and deployment of best available technologies, integrated information platforms, cross-cutting technologies and measures, a shift to low carbon electricity, radical product innovations, carbon dioxide capture and storage (CCS), demand on new and replacement products, systematic approaches and collaboration among different industries. These useful suggestions could be shared or learned by industrial policy makers or managers in the developing world so that the overall GHG emissions from their industrial sectors can be mitigated by considering the local realities.

Abstract:Energy saving and emission reduction in China’ refining and chemical industry has experienced planned economy and market economy,and made great progress.For instance,refining energy consumption has fallen from>100 KgEO/t through 70-80kgEO/t to 50-60kgEO/t.There are three principles directing energy saving in refining and chemical industry.First,energy nature lies in temperature-level quality instead of quantity.Second,overall situation should be emphasized with system engineering approach.Third,optimal matching should be achieved by using technical economy accounting.This is the only way to high energy efficiency.China’s refining and chemical industry has now entered the third phase of energy saving,which has following features:optimal coordination of resources and energy,and integrated optimization of energy circular economy among local refining and chemical plants,surrounding economy zones and industry groups.

Materials play a pivotal role in advancing technologies that can offer efficient renewable energy solutions for the future. This special issue has been established as an international foremost interdisciplinary forum that aims to publish high quality and original full research articles on all aspects of the study of materials for the deployment of renewable and sustainable energy technologies. Abstract:Abstract Adhering to the strategy of energy conservation and emission reduction is one of the important principles of China’s industrial development. As one of the indispensable pillar industries of the national economy with high energy consumption and emissions. at the same time because of the restriction of the natural environment conditions, the high-speed development of behind to face the problem of the shortage of resources, ecological destruction, in order to improve people’s quality of life and life experience, improve the level of energy conservation and emissions reduction iron and steel industry is imperative. Steel smelting industry, comprehensive considering the steel utilization, energy conservation and emissions reduction targets, etc., have noticed that the costs in smelting system energy-saving, the importance of the question is, society for steel utilization, can’t bring enough money for the iron and steel smelting industry benefit, and hindered the development of new energy saving technology, increased the energy saving of iron and steel smelting system pressure. Thus it can be seen that cost capital is the main problem of energy saving in modern iron and steel smelting system. Only with financial support can the level of energy saving be improved.

Abstract:Process systems engineering research focuses on the planning, design, operation, and safety of process systems rather than unit operations. In response to the rapid growth of the chemical process industry in the last 20 years in China, advanced system integration and process safety technologies are investigated and applied for better resource utilization, less environmental impact, and safer working places. In this regard, the review in this article consists of four main achievements: (1) process synthesis, (2) energy system integration, (3) water system integration, and (4) process safety management. The purpose of process synthesis and integration is to improve resource and energy utilization, at the same time lowering by-products and emissions. Optimization is conducted on process structure and operation, following the principles of resource coupling and energy cascade utilization. Typical examples are coupling of coal and hydrogen-rich resources and integration of coal-based polygeneration process of chemicals, electricity, and heat. Energy integration implements the coordinated optimization of total site energy systems. Reviews are made on specific methodologies based on the thermodynamics and applications of design and retrofit in ethylene, oil refining, and synthetic ammonia industries. There are energy savings by 10%-20% and yields increasing by 20%-30%. In addition, waste heat recovery and cold energy utilization are also important research areas. Reviews on the progress of water system integration and its industrial applications are also conducted. It includes the direct reuse, regeneration, and reuse/recycle in water systems and systems with internal water mains. Finally, safety management and technologies are also indispensable technological advancements of the process. The legislation system and the work safety-related standard system have been gradually established and enforced. Process safety research progress is reviewed, and questions are proposed for improving the accident prevention and safety management agenda.

Abstract:<p>The mission of Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (RSER) is to communicate the most significant and relevant critical thinking in renewable and sustainable energy research and development, bringing together the research community, the private sector and policy and decision-makers. The aim of the journal is to share problems, solutions, novel ideas and technologies that support the transition to a low-carbon future and achieve the global emissions targets as established by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC).
