Abstract:A review of p-terephthalic acid (PTA) process development carried out in Zhejiang University during recent years was made. The R & D works cover oxidation and crystallization kinetics, gas-liquid mass transfer, reactor modeling, database development, novel reactor design, process modeling, simulation and optimization. A viewpoint was emphasized through this case study, which chemical reaction engineering should be developed to process system engineering to extend its scope, and particular attention should be paid on reactor and process unit modeling.

Abstract:At the beginning of new millennium, process systems engineering (PSE) is facing some major challenges from process industries. To meet these challenges, some new concepts were coined in the last two decades, such as green chemistry, ecological engineering, industrial ecology, etc. A cross-discipline branch of engineering, namely Green PSE, is defined. Green PSE aims to establish harmonious social-economical-technological combined systems by incorporating man-made systems into nature ecosystems. Five parts are included: the first part, introduction, the definition of Green PSE is presented in the second part. Then, process simulation and analysis, process optimization, and process integration are described respectively in the following three parts.

Abstract:Changes have always been taking place on earth. However, the latest changes related to the climate, the COVID-19 pandemic, natural resources, pollution, to name a few, have changed our world and a new normal is emerging. The energy-water-environment-food-health nexus is becoming more complex. These challenges, however, also provide opportunities to tackle them and make scientific and engineering advances. PSE is well-placed through its core and expanding domain as well as its ability to apply a systems approach to meet current and future challenges. Many opportunities exist for the PSE community to take the lead in managing this complexity. This paper will provide an overview on some of the key challenges and opportunities where PSE could make immediate as well as long lasting impacts by developing sustainable and innovative solutions. Focus will be placed on the choice of problems to solve and the solution approaches that could make an impact and help to define the new normal for future generations.

Abstract:Process systems engineering(PSE)is playing an increasingly important role in the development of biorefinery.This paper introduces the existing application of PSE in process development ,enterprise production and regional system design of biorefinery.To meet the requirements of biorefinery development,the possibility and necessity of PSE application in bio-reaction process simulation ,enterprise production process optimization and production management optimization are discussed.Two important future directions of PSE’s application in biorefinery are proposed,one of which is the effort in large-scale system analysis for a complete biorefinery system including agriculture and forestry,and the other is the interdisciplinary cooperation with economics,management science and other sciences.

Abstract:This position paper is an outcome of discussions that took place at the third FIPSE Symposium in Rhodes, Greece, between June 20-22, 2016 (http://fi-in-pse.org). The FIPSE objective is to discuss open research challenges in topics of Process Systems Engineering (PSE). Here, we discuss the societal and industrial context in which systems thinking and Process Systems Engineering provide indispensable skills and tools for generating innovative solutions to complex problems. We further highlight the present and future challenges that require systems approaches and tools to address not only 'grand' challenges but any complex socio-technical challenge. The current state of Process Systems Engineering (PSE) education in the area of chemical and biochemical engineering is considered. We discuss approaches and content at both the unit learning level and at the curriculum level that will enhance the graduates' capabilities to meet the future challenges they will be facing. PSE principles are important in their own right, but importantly they provide significant opportunities to aid the integration of learning in the basic and engineering sciences across the whole curriculum. Abstract:Process simulation, optimization, and flexibility analysis have received considerable attention in the field of Process Systems Engineering (PSE). In this work, a unified solution strategy is proposed to describe the solution space of problems through symbolic computation. On the basis of the projection and lifting modules in the algorithm layer, three tailored modules for process simulation, optimization, and flexibility analysis problems are developed in the application layer of SyPSE with designed algorithm and visualization tools. Parametric simulation and optimization are also presented. For each submodule, a case study is presented to illustrate the procedure of the solution, which can be invoked conveniently by users and visualized with interface tools.

Abstract:Production Systems Engineering (PSE) is an emerging branch of Engineering intended to uncover fundamental principles of production systems and utilize them for analysis, continuous improvement, and design. In PSE, manufacturing systems are addressed based on first principles and at the same level of rigor as that in other engineering disciplines. This paper is intended to give a general characterization of PSE and consider, in some details, several PSE problems. Specifically, the problems of performance analysis, bottlenecks, leanness, system-theoretic properties, and transient behavior are addressed. In addition, several case studies are described and the PSE Toolbox, which implements the techniques and algorithms developed, is presented.

Abstract:The field of Process system engineering (PSE) is constantly developing with the availability of advanced computational resources. Since 1960s, process simulation has been one of the most successful story in using computer aided methods and tools in the field of chemical engineering. Nowadays, several software tools are available for process simulation, process optimization, process synthesis and design. However, the current software in PSE is mainly focussed on processes without consideration of controller design or validation. The gap between process design and controller design seems to be increasing, which may lead to suboptimal solutions especially for closed-loop systems. Therefore, there is always a demand for integrating the process design with consideration of the controller design; even though the development of such software tool has not been well addressed so far, or are industry specific. In this paper, a model-based integrated process and controller design software tool called ProCACD (computer aided controller design) is presented along with a case study to design controllers and optimize controller parameters for a system of three-tanks-in-series with recycle.

Abstract:Process systems engineering (PSE), after being proposed by Sargent and contemporary researchers, has been fast developing in various domains and research communities around the world in the last couple of decades, with energy systems engineering featuring a typical yet still fast propagating domain, and the Chinese PSE community featuring a typical community with its own unique challenges for applying PSE theory and methods. In this paper, development of energy systems engineering and process systems engineering in China is discussed, and Sargent's impacts on these two fields are the main focus. Pioneering work conducted by Sargent is firstly discussed. Then, a venation on how his work and thoughts have motivated later researchers and led to progressive advances is reviewed and analyzed. It shows that Sargent's idea of optimum design and his work on nonlinear programming and superstructure modelling have resulted in well-known methods that are widely adopted in energy systems engineering and PSE applications in tackling problems in China. Following Sargent's pioneering ideas and conceptual design of the PSE mansion, future development directions of energy systems engineering are also discussed.

Abstract:Since the 1950s, the field of process systems engineering (PSE) research experienced growth. PSE research has contributed several ways in which a process or energy system could be designed. To describe the aforementioned "ways" to design process or energy systems, several papers have used varied terminologies such as approach, methodology, method, procedure and technique (AMMPT). These five terms have been used frequently and interchangeably. However, these five terms do possess distinct meanings and must be used appropriately. In this respect, we argue for the need for a systematic framework to clearly distinguish AMMPT terminologies from the PSE perspective. In this paper, we offer a perspective on AMMPT terminologies and provide a conceptual framework to understand the distinctions between them as well as how they could be used appropriately in PSE.

Abstract:Process systems engineering research focuses on the planning, design, operation, and safety of process systems rather than unit operations. In response to the rapid growth of the chemical process industry in the last 20 years in China, advanced system integration and process safety technologies are investigated and applied for better resource utilization, less environmental impact, and safer working places. In this regard, the review in this article consists of four main achievements: (1) process synthesis, (2) energy system integration, (3) water system integration, and (4) process safety management. The purpose of process synthesis and integration is to improve resource and energy utilization, at the same time lowering by-products and emissions. Optimization is conducted on process structure and operation, following the principles of resource coupling and energy cascade utilization. Typical examples are coupling of coal and hydrogen-rich resources and integration of coal-based polygeneration process of chemicals, electricity, and heat. Energy integration implements the coordinated optimization of total site energy systems. Reviews are made on specific methodologies based on the thermodynamics and applications of design and retrofit in ethylene, oil refining, and synthetic ammonia industries. There are energy savings by 10%-20% and yields increasing by 20%-30%. In addition, waste heat recovery and cold energy utilization are also important research areas. Reviews on the progress of water system integration and its industrial applications are also conducted. It includes the direct reuse, regeneration, and reuse/recycle in water systems and systems with internal water mains. Finally, safety management and technologies are also indispensable technological advancements of the process. The legislation system and the work safety-related standard system have been gradually established and enforced. Process safety research progress is reviewed, and questions are proposed for improving the accident prevention and safety management agenda.
